Abit AX78 + Phenom II beta Bios on Route

hi guys,

thought i would post this for the Abit AX78 users among us, i have been in talks with Abit bios team, and i have been assured there is a Beta Bios that will support the new Phenom II.

the bios itself is in final testing for beta release, and will be given to me for testing very soon (next couple of days i hope)

you cant believe how happy i am about this, i was gagging to try the Phenom II in that board, now i can, hell i might keep it in there if the clocks are good :up:

of course i will keep you updated with any bios file or news

once you have flashed the bios, please clear cmos, and then boot computer and enter bios, at this point please LOAD OPTIMIZED DEFAULTS and reboot, into bios again, where you can set mem voltages and whatever else you want to set.

yes abit, Abit AX78 to be precise, £40 it cost me, and is still going strong after a year of abuse, wish i could say the same for all the Foxconn and ASUS boards out there.

yes i have, but i dont have the Phenom II yet to test it out on, apart from that all is well, i have got my same clocks as before (2.8 gig) and it seems stable, i also dont notice any major changes in the bios itself.

Hello everyone, just updated to bios 14, jut for the fun, as I do not have a Phenom cpu. Followed the instructions, meaning after flash I reset BIOS from jumper entered BIOS saved and exited, reentered and set optimised default saved and then reentered. Cheked the configuration and first thing I saw in soft menu was that my cpu frequency was incorectly displayed as being 2000Mhz and the multiplier as 11,5. My CPU is X2 4200+ F2 Windsor that has a defaul multi of 11. Load windows and check with CPU-Z my frquency is shown corectly, so it was only displayed incorectly. Other than that it works OK. I do caution anyone who wants to test this BIOS to do it at their own risk, I am only doing this "testing" because I feel covered (I have a spare bios chip already flashed with ver 13).

I do hope that I will get around to buy a 7750+ (money isue) so I can play some more.

italic are what i see with a x2 6400. bold is interesting i think given the complaints people had with setting ganged/unganged modes in one of the ooold threads - this was posibly fixed in bios .13 but seems likely the setting exists in some form or another since we can display all varieties of it!
also, the date inside appears to be 26/12/2008! busy at abit over the holidays it seems O.o
anyone able to confirm the presence of ganged/unganged options on a phenom / phenom 2 using .13 or .14?

Actually he was bashing the contiuned following of a now defunct manufacturer, not so much the board itself. Also, calling someone an "idiot" while using "u"s and "ur"s in a giant run on sentence doesn't reflect well on you, FYI.

New bios won't work for me. Won't flash due to "file size does not match". This is for both sources in this thread (thanks guys, even though it doesn't work for me).
At least it didn't FUBAR my bios. Anyone have any ideas ? I used awdflash.exe/py/sn/cd/cp/cc/cks/R as per the abit flash guide and then tried to save m706a_14.bin , fails on checksum -filesize does not match. Also tried without the strings after "awdflash", same result.
Hope someone can help. I really really want my missing NB-FID setting(it's not anywhere, I've looked -multiple re-flashes to v13, nothing) for my 7750. I have a feeling the 7750 is not fully supported, even though the chip is correctly identified on the post screen.

that sounds really bizzare darth, have you replaced the bios chip itself before this?

and when you used the switches did you enter spaces between them? like this

i just flashed mine again, to try and sort the CPU Multi issue im having (it didnt fix it)

its no big deal, i set it too 14 in bios and it shows as 14.5 in windows, just set it too 13.5 for 2800 mhz.

all going well my Phenom II should arrive today, then we will see how effective the bios is, and i can do a full report for the Abit bios team.

are you using the awdflash that came with the file?

and how are you flashing it? if its a floppy, it might be corupted

Nope, no spaces between switches. I'll try that. I'm flashing with usb and the files match according to WinMerge. It's probably the spaces thing, sounds like something I'd forget.
Also, do you or your connections at abit bios team know if the board detects the 7750 as a phenom based chip, or a plain-jane x2 ? It seem like I'm missing a "phenom only" setting or two. Kuma is a phenom with 2 disabled cores. Should be detected as a phenom.

woot, we have lift off !!!!!!!!

wipped out the old Phenom 9850, popped in the Phenom 940, stuck some arctic silver on there, cleared cmos, booted and low and behold,

now everything seems to be running fine, and the only voltages i have touched is the ram voltage, everything is at stock, and there it will remain till the AS5 has cured, and the chip has had some 'burn in' time.

there is only one slight niggle, the bios detected the correct speed at 3 gig, but if you go look at the CPU multi it shows 14.5, so it is .5 out, hell thats fine, as long as i can adjust to it, then who cares. it is a beta bios after all.

as i said i will give it a couple of days to settle in to its new home, then start the OC, she's under water, so i might get a half decent result.

i will update when i get some results, but this will let anyone who was thinking of pulling the trigger on one of these for thier AX78, have no dought that it works

I'm running one, running 16x201 for 3.21Ghz(bios 13)1.44v. The 7750 is detected as 7750 x2 on the post screen and cpu-z sees it as a Kuma core. Only 'major' problem is I'm missing my NB-FID setting thats supposed to show up with Phenom based chips.

I can only put my reference clock up to 220 at any ram speed, or I get that damn " CPU overrunning " message and it wont let me into windows. My 5000BE was good for at least 247x13.

To soundood : my htt is running at 1808, I can lower that by multiplier but not over. Looks like the board won't let me go over my NB clock (also at 1808 as per everest), which is a good "feature" as your not supposed to have htt greater than NB clock. The NB clock does not follow my HTT clock when I lower the htt multiplier. Looks like my NB-FID is locked at 9, as the clock increases or decreases in multiples of 9 when I play with the reference clock, possibly explaining why I can't go over 220.

yeah the board does not have a ND FID, never has, only a HT Multi, that again you cant up, because it will not post because its higher than NB

This is what I'm looking for, doesnt seem to be anywhere. I guess I've added to confusion by calling it the NB-FID. Of course the manual could be wrong. It is for a few bios versions ago.

well things are cool, but there are a couple of bugs, the multi doesnt register properly, it shows 14 for 14.5, 14.5 for 15 and so on, also i am seeing odd ram speeds with the beta, i have it set to 5-5-5-15 in bios, but in windows it shows as 5-5-11-29.

so all is not perfect, but the biggest problem o i am having is shut downs with overclocks, this has nothing to do with the bios, as it was happening with bios 13,

but more of a OCP/OVP problem on the board, at 3 gig stock, all is fine, prime stable,

but with a 400 mhz OC, it will start prime then wham, shut down.

i thought it was the PSU at first, but after testing with a single rail PSU i concluded it was the board.

a sad day, but hey we all move on, i got a crosshair II on order :up: so that should solve the shut down problem.

i am so impatiant, because i know in my gut this is a cracking chip, i managed to get 3.6 without upping voltage in this AX78, cant wait to get some power behind it :shocked:

Sorry to hear about your problems soundood. The AX-78 is a solid little mainstream board, but even my little 7750 had its quirks on it, in fact if I upped the voltage too much it would shutdown just like your describing.
I've found the AX-78 has a few little failsafe things, like the dreaded " cpu overrunning " thing. It wouldn't surprise me if ABIT chose to build in a failsafe for "too much" voltage or current.
It's funny you went for a high end ASUS, as I did the same thing with an M3A79-T board, no shut downs, smooth as silk. I even picked up a few points in some benchies while running at the very same settings as on my AX-78. I upped my northbridge to 2000 from 1800 and it's like a new machine(almost), seems much more 'snappy'. Having said that, I find the hardware monitoring on the ABIT board to be superior, also I find myself wishing I could set the shut down and warning temperatures -kind of a piece of mind thing. Of course the Crosshair is a different board , ymmv.
Oh well, my Girlfriend inherits a very good board and cpu (x2 5000BE guaranteed for 3.2Ghz). Should surprise her when she boots up. Gonna do a ninja upgrade when she's not looking, quite an upgrade from an NForce 2 board (god I miss soundstorm:()with an xp2500m (@2.5Ghz - running that way since new, still going strong).

yeah i have allways been a fan of 'budget boards' on a new build, surrounding it with qulity parts to see how far ir will go, i have my personal satisfaction button pressed when it clocks higher than much more expencive boards.

the AX78 gave me that, but sadly now it is failing that test, due to age and OC, so much the same as you, the kids media centre will get a ninja upgrade :up:

as for the ASUS crosshair, i have been eyeing it for ages, (since last year) and was waiting to see if there was a ACC nvidia board released (Vapourware), but hey nothing, then the AM3 support was added to a lot of ASUS boards, but not the CrosshairII, so that held me back.

only recently did they add the Crosshair II to the list of AM3 boards (i knew they would)

and then my ax78 went funny, so time for a high end nvidia board, i thin k i have timed it perfect, i will get full use of this board now, with a cpu and board combo i will be happy with till next year now.

at that point i will go for the crosshair III, and AMD3 DDR3 (yes crosshair III, Q3 2009)

but for someone who wants to run stock with a 940, there is no problem, this board can still take it :up:

just flashed to .14 here, from .12 - went smoothly, and have the same bugs as you soundood (using an x2 6400)

the cpu defaults run the correct speed but it report the default cpu multi as .5 higher. however when altering multi down, it then applys correctly as set, eg 12x = 12x 13x = 13x.
i also have ram funnies - set to 4-5-4-18, bios current state shows 4-5-5-0 and windows shows 4-5-5-(blank) in most aps, and 4-5-5-4 in the rest. performance dont seem to be hurt tho.
spd did not load correctly at default : spd = 5-5-5-15 @533 or 4-4-4-10 for 400 but ran 5-4-4-18 @ 533 O.o? (ram can run that fine at 1.8v tho so np)

bios now has coloured voltage settings rather than always white. they are white, blue, red as you raise up. (why does the board have 1.775v core available when its almost unusable anyway??)

amd overdrive now reports some more details than .12, tho the cpu core voltage isnt reading correctly

phenom arrives tomorrow for further tests. im hoping for a good core, i plan on dropping cpu core 0.025 from stock then overclocking - this should give just enough headroom on current to reach about 3.6-3.7ghz if the core can do those speeds with that voltage.

Yes I to have ram timing issues , the default for my ram it 5,5,5,15 at 533 , but i can't get it running any better than 5,5,10,18 at 533 ..

i can help you get closer to the desired timings:

if you pick the 800mhz, rather than 1066 you can then get more sensible timings out of the board. to get back to 1066 speed drop the multi and up the bus speed.
267mhz fsb gives you 1066mhz ram with it set to 800. this also gives 2400mhz nb frequency.

if your running a P2 940 i think you will find the following to be "optimal" on our boards, if your cpu is atall like mine:

Dram at 800mhz setting, htlink at 7x multi
cpu at 12x (11.5x in bios) stock volts for cpu + nb
fsb at 278

this gives you final speeds of cpu: 3333, nb: 2500 and ram 1111
my board posts fine at fsb 300 using 11x multi and 6x ht multi
however: at 2700mhz nb you will a) need a very good chip and b) a lot of luck, i was getting nb-ocp cutout and memtest errors due, i think, to nb
the good news for owners of 920's is that the board can almost certainly clock them to the same point as 940's as fsb clocking is very definately an option. the bad news is that the max clock is a way behind boards with better voltage options.

there has been no update as yet to the 14 beta (1) but i had an email stating that it might go to a beta 2, just to take in all the other Phenoms that are turning up.

i would expect this in the next month, they are slow the abit team, but they get it done eventualy, i dunno, maybe a full version for mid april?

Does anyone know if the Athlon II 250 will run in the AX78? I have a 940 with beta bios and it runs stable, but what about the new 45nm Athlon with no L3?

i am pretty sure that it will run ok, but will not be recognised by bios, so will appear as 'unknown cpu' on boot,

what i would watch is the stock volts to CPU, and make sure the board is setting it correctly, if not then set it manualy.

but after putting the chip and loading for the first time, please use the 'load optimised defaults' in bios and reboot, then set all other settings and head into windows.

once there check the voltage again to see its ok.

I'd love to see this works practically! Isn't a great thing having platform that can support first ever 90nm DDR2 Athlon X2 4000+, and the latest and greatest 45nm Athlon II/Phenom II?!

the board and the 250 should be a sweet combo, asuming the cpu works. the board is proven to run high htt without issue on phenom2's and is only held back by the pwm on the 125/140w cpu's - the bios options are there for extreme voltages. there just isnt the capacity for it on higher wattage cpu's.

if you find it tricky to get your ram timings set right using the 1066 ram setting, use the 800 setting then ramp up the htt. you should be able to drop the cpu multi if needed. (267htt = 1066mhz ram on 800 setting)

Hi , I would like to add something to this thread .

just put a PII x4 955 BE onto my AX78 it its running , sees the cpu ok on boot ( reads correct ) but doesnt set the volts correct , sets 0.97 ish and doesnt allow me to alter the multi at all in the bios and its set at x4 so thats 800 mhz cpu speed , after altering the volts and using AOD to set the multi its running at stock 3200 now and seems ok with 35-40c temps on stock retail hsf . again the ram timings are wrong , will get to that soon .

would be nice to get a bios to suit though hey :)

have you tried a full cmos reset, load optimised, reboot, check, cmos reset type cycle?

yes ive tried a few ways , one thing i noticed that if you increase the voltage in the bios ( cpu ) it increases the cpu vddc according to AOD , + 0.37v should take the cpu vid to 1.35 but it puts the cpu vddc to 1.92 and the cpu vid is still 0.97 ( cpu vddc is at 1.55 to start with which is too high ? ) also i have gone back to bios 13 and the NB vid is lower with that bios 1.1 apposed to about 1.4 with 14 .

from what i can tell the cpu is in its lowest p state with no way of increasing it in the bios , i have had it running at 3.6ghz with AOD but i really need a better HSF to get the best out of it . i have now put my 6000+ back in untill i get a better HSF or some more info before i start playing again .

also i can get the bios to see 3100mhz at post by increasing the cpu FID by setting x31 , the cpu DID must be wrong also in bios 14 for this chip . bios 13 is correct at x16 for 3200 but in both cases it doesnt actually alter the clock speed of the chip as there is no actual mutiplier option in softmenu . looking back at the screenshot of soundood 940 bootup it looks the same as that but with 800mhz speed .

should there be more than one P state in the cpu features section , i only have PO

yes you should have P0 ans P1 in the bios cpu features, i am actualy surprised by this as i expected the board to be ok with this chip,

i am also surprised that you dont have the multi set up in the bios, could it be because you are moving from the 6000 over to the 955?

try this if you havent already,

disable AOD at start up, even uninstal it (piece of crap it is) (Yoda voice)

boot up with 6000 in there, and then shut down,

remove the 6000, and unplug the rig, clear cmos using the jumper (not the switch at the back panel) leave for a minute or so.

reset the jumper back, and then put the 955 in there, and boot going straight into bios, and load 'optimised defaults' save and reboot.

then go back into bios, and have a look around, setting your ram voltage and multi to stock (if you can) and disable 'cool'n quiet'

then boot into windows, and get a screen of CPU-Z for me,

PLEASE FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS TO THE LETTER as the board bios was sort of funny on V13 and V14 beta, and would give you odd Vcore as such

AND PLEASE AGAIN DISABLE AOD, AND DONT USE IT TO SEE VCORE OR TEMPS WITH THIS BOARD, IT DOESNT WORK

mean while, i will try an email to jos (abit support) and see if there is anything he can do, given the current situation.

on a side note, i gave up this board due to the OCP/OVP kicking in when i overclocked it, it now sits in a media centre with a 5000BE in there, what i am saying is that even if you get stock speed on it, you probaly wont get any overclock on it. that sort of defeats the purpose of this chip.

might be time to upgrade mobo, next time you have the cash, i use the ASUS M4A79 deluxe myself, although not a fan, the gigabyte boards are also getting good reports from various users on here.

side note , cpu-z gave me the same vcore as AOD as did anything i used tbh , always 0.97 . only thing i didnt check was the vcore in cpu-z after i had used the bios to increase it , AOD ( POS ;) ) said the cpu vid was still 0.97 while the cpu vddc had increased to 1.92 from 1.55 ( + 0.37 increase .. ) if cpu-z still see's vcore at 0.97 then AOD must be correct ? if it see's 1.35 then i'll believe that instead .

ok put the 955be back in using V14 bios ( have 2 chips :) ) booted the same as before 0.968v core and x4 multi = 800mhz .. increases the core volts in bios to +0.37 ( max ) and now its showing 1.344 in cpu-z and abit eq so thats ok , just need the option for multiplier now , couple of programs that can do that for the time being though .. still only have PO state in bios too .

ok things are a little better at least, you can use k10stat or my favourite for these things is Phenom msr tweaker,

you can pin that to start menu and set the multi and voltage on it, so in theory all you would have is slow boot.

and you followed what i said to the letter ehh? and cleared cmos inbetween CPU changes? and also loaded 'optimised defaults'?

i hate to sound anul, but this is soooo crucial to do at this point, as missing one of them will result in this kind of behaviour

yes did the cmos a few times now just to be sure lol even loaded failsafe defaults once to see if that would do it , still no multi in softmenu

K10Stat wont work with the issue he is having all of the boards had this issue with the 955BE the mobo is not setting the CPUFID correctly and the chips will not respond to adjustments using K10stat unluckily the only thing that worked on my M4A78T-e was AOD to get it to clock. this means he will have to wait for a microcode update.

i dont use K10stat myself, so wouldnt know anything about it, and i have sent an email to abit support (yeah i know) to see if there will be a microcode update to bios to support this CPU, but i highly dought it.

K10stat is great as for the 955 issue it sounds to me like its time for you to see how high you can get the HTT up to :D i got 4*400 on my crosshair II before i swapped boards out

yeah can confirm that only AOD can adjust the multi to get x16 :( but as im not altering the volts i guess i can live with that for a bit , thx for the help guys

just a little info , the V14 bios isnt stable with this chip anyway ,this is my guess as to why , it overvolts the NBvid to 1.525 with V13 its 1.1v . both run the cpu at stock speeds ok but at 3400mhz the V14 shuts down the pc within 1 min of prime95 but V13 is rock solid ,ran prime for 2 hours no problem with exact same settings ( just 200x17 with everything else stock ) temps are fine with the stock cooler at this and i cant go higher in the bios on the cpu volts( maxed out for 1.35 ) and dont want to use AOD to adjust them , so i guess 3.4 on stock volts is good enough for now , much better than the 6000+ anyhow :) got 22k in 3dmark 2005 with a very much stock 4850 ..

so if you are using the betav14 might be worth checking your NBvid .. the NBcore reports ok at 1.1 on both btw

AOD .. K10stat and i think phenom MSR tweaker reported the higher NB volts

what about the Kn9-SLi?

no this thread is just about the abit ax78 board ,trying to get phenom II support etc. V14 beta is a beta bios for the ax78

ok these are my conclusions so far with a 955 be and the AX78 , after changing my cpu cooler for a thermalright true extreme , temps are now great btw 42c max at 3.4 ghz .

the cpu-nb vid adjustment in the bios does nothing ,the HT fid adjustment also does nothing , was getting a lot of bsod untill i set the NB vid with Kstat , that sorted that but still cant get a good stable 3.8ghz , can get through 3dmark 05 / 06 ok but not prime , it will just shut down after a while , pwm ?? , the highest i can get 100% stable is 3.6 but i do need 1.37v on the cpu for that ,3.7ghz @1.425v is ok for about an hour on prime then it shuts down . to raise the fsb yo have to use AOD again to lower the HT , i have had 250 fsb ok but not really done much on that . aswell as the board not allowing cpu mulitplier adjustment and setting the cpu-vid to 0.97 ( 200x4 cpu speed )

this is with V13 bios not the beta btw i havnt checked the cpu-nb vid adjustment ( i know it sets it to 1.525 v though )or HT fid on that one tbh

it was worth a shot to see if it would work and it probably would with a bios update , wouldnt clock that great though but i would get a little bit stable.

so now im trying to decide between a crosshair III or a GD70


edit just tried the beta bios again , it will adjust the HT multiplier but it doesnt adjust the cpu-nb volts which are at 1.5375v ( volts read by Kstat and p msr t and aod , cpu-nb volts are not in the bios monitoring section )

as i said in an earlier post, this board will not overclock well, you experiance shut downs as the OCP/OVP kicks in, requiring you to unplug PSU, or leave it a minute or two till it resets,

on my 9850BE i could get 2800 mhz, on this chip, my 940BE i could get 3 gig stable, 3.2 would make the OCP/OVP kick in, now i have the M4A79, i can get 3.8 gig stable @ 1.45 volts.

and one last thing, the more it 'trips' the more frequent it will become, till you cant get anything other than stock, if your lucky :confused:

crosshair III would be my chioce, imature bios, but that will be sorted out soon enough

as much as it killed me, sometimes you just dont have a choice, i think if you have some cash handy, start having a look at some boards for this chip.

your in the same position i was in, ive got a not bad chip here, and it was being strangled in the AX78, retire it to a media centre or bench board.

as for bios update, i really dont think that is going to happen, i have heard nothing back from an email, not that surprised by that really

i think the move from ASUS from Abit is a logical one to be honest, and with OCZ, i just have never had a problem with any of their kit, i have 8 gig of OCZ golds DDR2 800 mhz in my other rigs, and the 1066 set of platinums here,

and for me this PSU is a cracker, rated well over spec, and contains all the componants that are found in the 800 w version, just rated at 700w for some reason, and of course some cash cheaper :up:

yeah still got a A7N8X delux running a 2800 @ 3200+ been that way for years lol had a asus 939 board but gave that away to my lad , he may if he's luck get a ax78 with a 6000+ next lol

was just going to order from overclockers.co .uk but actually im passing the place tomorrow in the lorry :) might get a 4890 too :D

just got my Lian Li case from them, i had heard a lot of bad storys about RMA problems and such, but to be honest they where great with me, answered my emails in 2 hours, shipping perfect (it arrives 7.30 am next day)

im in GPU limbo as well, i was thinking of grabbing an ATI card but i cant stand the driver issues, my GTX 260 might become a PhysX card and get a single PCB 295 for Gaming, if you know what i mean.

we will see, let us know how the upgrade goes :up: be interesting to see what you really can get out of that chip

on a side note: i had the Asus A8N32-SLI-Deluxe skt 939 board, loved it, but i pushed it tooo hard and it failed to boot one day, very sad day for me

Hello everyone, I don't know if any of you here are using an Abit A-S78H mobo, which is quite a decent one, or not. I just want to share with you what I'm having.

Just like AX78, its only problem is that it lacks a BIOS which support the new Phenom II CPUs (due to the company no longer produces mainboards). Good news is I have just received the beta BIOS from the Abit supporters, I am gonna post it here so you can download if you're interested... :)

the reson i didnt upload it, is that it is useless, it is nasty app that you run from windows that lets you update your bios from within windows.

this should never be done, the bios should allways be updated from a floppy or properly formatted USB stick.

please do not use it, as if it hangs during 'update' your board will be useless, especialy now there is no ABIT.

i can confirm from bad experience that flashing the bios in windows doesnt work . i had to get a new bios chip for my AX78 after trying it that way . hot flashed the old one so now i have 2 :) but as its been demoted to a box under the cabinate it doesnt really matter now .

still life in the AX78 yet so my son will have it when i can stop playing with the crosshair III lol

Hi just like to say that i tried out the beta bios for the Abit A-S78H and it did work and seem stable, but of the changes that i noticed in the bios non seemed to benefit me. Of course i don't know what the changes where but one i did see was the version of the south bridge drivers or whatever their called had increased. But the problem i had is it would not let me set my RAM to 1066, so in the end i went back to the older version.

no there isnt a new bios, the latest and last is the v14 beta, and i dont think that abit support even excists now, i have tried to mail them at private and public email adress's and they havent replied.

so thats that im afraid :shrug:

It seems that Abit is officially dead now, but somehow their European Abit Supporters are still..... alive? Thanks to them I've got this beta BIOS for my A-S78H mobo.

E-mail them and let them know what you need, I suggest you do it a.s.a.p 'coz I don't think they will ever last long :)

P.S I personally think that Soundood's beta BIOS for AX78 is good enough for the current time, I mean Abit is dead now, isn't it?

about the AX78 v14 beta bios, is there any problem with phanom II chip installed on it running with default setting?

The 940 and 720 (? - the AM2+ Tri) work, pretty much perfectly on stock settings (ALL STOCK!) tho ram can set itself a little strangely.

i dont know about any of the AM3cpu's however
