OCZ Vertex 2 SSD boast 550MB/s read speed, 480MB/s write speed

In order to achieve thee speeds you will have to get to SATA 3.0, as SATA 2.0 is maxed out at 300MB/s per device. SATA 3.0 on the other hand gets you all the way to 750GB/s which will be enough even for Vertex 2.

This drive will come the market in late Q1 2009 and we reckon it will be ready for Cebit. Here is how it looks in action.

I like the fact that as these get faster, even the small file speeds become acceptable. Small files always bring these drives to their knees but even these are in the 120 read/345 write range for 16kb which is very, very good.

We didnt even saw results of Vertex 1 yet........ and we saw for Vertex 2. Strange

They improve really fast :)

I'm pretty sure this is 4 OCZ vertex. They're supposed to come in 1\2 weeks, and i'm gonna get as quickly as possible two of the 30Gb ones. 60GB with 350mb\s read 300mb\s write,with 32\64mb cache for about €250.

if SATA2 is the limit how did they demo this drive
do they have a working SATA3 board or something?

I thought FusionIO was coming out with a SSD PCIE card for gamers? What ever happened with that?

SATA 6.0 development and transition is going to happen fast. Finally hard drives are evolving the same way GPUs are.

wow i read the title and thought it was a typo. thats crazy fast. they will cost a fortune most likely but at this rate i might wait until the end of the year to get a ssd as fast as they are advancing.

Its kind of impressive, but did no one notice this is a quad raid.

They didn't magically manage to triple speed of the fastest ssd out.

Fast but I would rather have a single ssd with half this speed so I could raid it myself.

You should be able to RAID these just fine with your controller of choice :shrug:

there are no sata3 motherboards yet. Most likely these are 2 or 3 vertex in raid, but fudzilla is confusing things again :rolleyes:

However one thing that really scares me of these internal raid drives is the delayed write cache. Screams for dataloss....new motto could be: Faster, but not yet there.... :ROTF:

There is a reason why raid controllers with write cache got battery backup.

This "hotfix" of the jmicron controllers that is still in these drives is scary. Because they fixed the write issue with cache. But they didnt protect the cache.

Isn't AMD's SB800 SATA 3.0 and due late Q2/Q3?
Hard to imagine Intel would cede that as a competative edge.

Why shouldn't we raid 4 vertex drives together, run atto, call it Vertex2 and yet again be the first ones to know something new and hot!
That way everybody will talk about us for another day positively and the next 2 days negatively. But all is good... bad publicity is good publicity, especially when you are famous for it since God knows when...

Even if the drive would be real, I'm sure they woudn't demo it since if they would, all it would achieve is massively reduced sales for current SSD's.

The hardware companies always exchange hardware to do demos/develop with. If you were to adhere to the strict standards release/develop timeframe you'd be getting SATA 3.0 drives in 2011.

isn't 6 Gbit interface speed? they use 8b/10b encoding for actual data transfer, so that would still equate to 600 MB/s...

So its still 600MB/sec on SATA6.

I think 6 Gbit/s is the theoretical maximum throughput. it will always be less depending on the controller.

Even if it's just a simulation I have high hopes for where this is going. The only thing that actually remains is practical concerns (heat/power/density in a certain size)

Vertex doesn't have any hotfix, because vertex don't have jmicron controller, and i'm pretty sure you know that, just like everyone knows your agenda.

Guys i posted on out forum it was a simulation. It used 4 vertex raid 0 with no cache enabled on the raid, we plan on raiding 4 vertex controllers in a single drive to attain this speed.

there will also be a dual controller raid 0 version for Sata2 which will launch sooner.

tony when pcie ssd ?

no matter how fast sata gets.. pcie is where performance is @

all i use sata for is dvd/bluray drives.. ill never use storage @ sata

dont get me wrong.. quad raid is great.. instead of getting 4x or more ssds for an array.. half the # of ssd is better

Sounds very exciting Tony. OCZ are definitely moving in leaps and bounds. With these ssd’s they have got my full attention.

And as mentioned before, it would be nice to see a pci-e device, I think OCZ have the ability and experience to produce an awesome one.

They are just as fixed as standard rotational drives with large caches, enable write cache at your own risk. leave it disabled and rotational drives aren't exactly awesome at random writes either.

The Apex and Vertex/Vertex2 are the performance oriented drives akin to intel's extreme processors

It's exactly tricks like this that are ruining my beliefs of how soon crazy fast somewhat affordable SSD's would be coming out. I really did not expect to see a drive announced this early that would actually require SATA-3 (and as Samsung is the OEM iirc I don't imagine this is a vaporware claim).

I've just finally decided to spend some money on a hardware RAID card and now this happens. Harrumph. The idea of some punk kid with a SATA 3 board (when they come out) and only 2 hard drives beating the pants off me is simply unacceptable. I hope you're going to have some sample units or a price break available for us XS'ers Tony because we're going to have to buy a lot of these to stay on top of the food chain.
