This is an old story, the date of the article is Nov 2007....!!
There's no news in it and it's referring to reference designs, which at this point hopefully mobo manufacturers have already started producing mobos ready for AM3 in the New Year.
Was hoping to see some early mobo designs from the top manufacturers...!!
Now if any tier 1 companies want to make a winner here's what they need to do.
4 usb back I/O, ditch the onboard graphics, 1 1394 fire wire will suffice I/O not necessary.
Additonal USB with todays USB devices a total of 10 total is not absurd
Ditch 1 IDE and Floppy connections *EDIT* 1 IDE Would be necessary to keep customers with existing quality peripherals.
Make the cpu socket clear of obstructions. *edit* optional mounting holes for optional orientation of aftermarket cooling.
Beef up the power scheme.*Edit* quality passive cooling all around
*edit* clean power, if you need an example - reference ati manta or grouper which i'm sure can even be improved upon.
6 or more sata mounted sideways off the edge of the board.
Make sure that installing ram is not impeded by having a card installed in PCI X 1.
*EDIT* Make sure ram is spaced taking oversized coolers in mind so that taller ram modules can be used without interference
*EDIT* Gigabyte lan
Plenty of PCI E slots, 1 additional x16 PCI X slot with as much space as possible between the 2 x16PCI X slots, and if they feel the need to use a regular PCI slot stick it at the bottom. *Edit* Ensuring that at least one PCI and PCIe slot will not be blocked when using 2 Dual slot vid cards.
Well placed auxillary power connectors
Stay away from the bold colors, a black board with white slots would work wonders or even all black or white with black slots.
I would personally ditch ps/2 connections. who uses a ps2 mouse or keyboard anymore.......*edit* 1 Ps/2 for keyboard may be necessary as USB still has some issues especially for new installs, acess to bios and wake from KB.
Power and reset buttons built onto the motherboard!!!!!!!!!!! very little space and cost.......
If asus is reading this an OC palm!!!!!!!!!!!
Azalia audio is ok, most will have they're own soundcard.
!!!*EDIT*!!! Tweaking/OC options, These are a must for a enthusiast board, manta reference and DFI NF4 Ultra D ( although I hated it ) would be a good guide of what offered great tweaking/OC options............IMHO a good board will survive the utmost abuse and is more than capable of killing a cpu if used wrong.............IF you can't kill a cpu then you aren't pushing the max limits of a CPU....
Have i missed anything.
Last time i checked this is november 2007, And i'm still searching for possible sneak peaks of an AM3 reference design. If the web doesn't yield anything I will try resort to a few of "my people" It does give us an overview of what the motherboard makers can choose to do with the platform, If enough noise is made we may get what we want. It's worked before.
one thing i like about AMD is their upgradeability feature
i remember my good old Asus (A7V133) that ran a 800MHz Athlon and then later upgraded to 1.7GHz Palomino with some beta bioses
that setup is STILL working. My father in law got the upgrade from my downgrade :D.
ever since AMD died off you kinda dissapeared
i am not surprised at all to see you think it's 2007 :D
this year or two definitely are forgettable for true AMD enthusiast (NO i'm not talking about you freak lynch mob fanbois but normal ppl like chew* :p: )
just surprised that s7 has not surfaced yet lol
yah s7's been pmed' as well as a couple of "my people"
Look what i found
http://xtreview.com/images/ASUS%20L1a64%20WS.jpg
Not to be confused with this.......Look close at the model #
http://usa.asus.com/prog_content/mid...spx?model=1984
Still searching however I did get a pic of a reference AMD board not sure if DDR 3. Hopefull someone can identify notch placement, I'll get pic up in a few.
After closer inspection this looks like a 790 ddr2 reference motherboard.
http://members.cox.net/bostonreefer1/Reference.jpg
I think that is the fiorano refernce board. The new server platform with ht 3 and better io virtualisation.
EDIT: Hmm no was that one

Would be sweet if AMD's answer to I7 was dual FX desktop cpu's......It worked in the graphic department....
Those unlocked shanghais would be quite expensive, at least as expensive as their top modell. If then hexacores labled HX. :)
Really not because amd died, I could have lived with mediocre clocks IF when frozen they scaled and didn't bug :( More important to me than the "6gig+" news is the more oftenly overlooked fact that they have apparently fixed the coldbug, that means my 3 phase units can get some loving again and I will need to buy/make a new DI tube or 2 if the board above is where amd plans to go.:D
I'd like to see an option to mount bolt through coolers like the Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme in both orientations so that you could clear tall memory modules and not be restricted in which dimm slots you can use or which memory you can use.
With a TRUE on the 790FXB-M2RSH I can't run dual channel with tall RAM like my G.Skill PI kit and on my Fatal1ty AN9 32X with its DIMM channels paired up I an just able to run the tall G.Skill PI ram in dual channel - but the TRUE causes the first module to lean into the second. It's a tight fit but it works - just.
Cheers
Thats actually a very good and valid point. I had originally planned on using dominators in my build but my OCZ cooler interferes with tall ram.......
Well I guess I'm weird, I want 1 IDE channel :p: I have a good solid dual format dual layer IDE DVD burner and no reason to replace it
If they were to ditch IDE though, then give at least 6 SATA. 4 won't cut it with no IDE!
I want at least 1 PCI slot that won't get blocked by double height graphics cards for my Audigy 2 ZS. Again, it works great (with Daniel_K's drivers) so no desire to find a replacement.
6 USB ports on the rear IO panel is nice, but 4 will do.
Must have gigabit ethernet!
Black boards are
Edited also valid points.
I kind of like the placement of the NB on that reference 790, sort of out of the way.
Does anyone agree disagree that 4 PCI X is overkill?
Personally I think Xfire & SLI are both overkill (but I'm not a hardcore gamer). At the rate VC's advance, there will probably be a better single slot solution within the next 6 months, that costs less than 2 cards... ;)
I agree with ya though chew*... I would be more tempted to buy a board with 2/16x slots, 2/4x slots and 2/PCI slots.
Maybe I'm the exception... :D
Yes, 1 IDE channel is a must have, I have a Plextor 716A DVD burner and another Plextor Premium Cd Burner. Those are the best you can have not going to change because they don't put 1 ide.
Also I prefer to use ps2 keyboard and mouse connectivity, feels more stable to me. And I then I can have plenty of spare usb ports so I can connect my 5 usb pens all at one time .
has for the floppy that one could go, but I'm certain some people would need it also (I have an usb floppy drive to use in case I need it)
Planet3dNow have an short article online today about an new AM3 board from ECS. Not much info just an rough estimated release date mentioned (01/09)
Link: Original Auto Translatet
I can agree that maybe one ps2 for keyboard can come in handy especially if you want to wake from keyboard, usb still has issues with this. I personally don't think its needed for a mouse and with high DPI mice it actually impedes them.
Floppies are useless, USB sticks and 5 in 1 card readers can do whatever floppy was intended for and better/faster/more reliably.
I think that If a teir 1 manufacturer did read this they may want to offer 2 variants. 1 capable of X fire and a Single PCI X variant would be plausable with onboard video to cover a wider range of consumers.
I think keeping one PS/2 is a must at the moment, I primarily use a Logitech USB keyboard, however frequently when trying to enter the BIOS the keyboard is not detected early enough to press the Del key to enter BIOS.... needing to restart a number of tiems before it finally works.... occassionally when making a lot of BIOS adjustments I just plug in a PS/2 keyboard solely for BIOS adjustments...!!!
Agreed i have experienced the same especially when setting up a new pc.
I see an increased use of "bling" is the trend. If a board runs rock solid, has good bios support and runs at acceptable temps passively cooled and clocks like a champ I think you will find that "how much bling" the board has will not matter.
I think PCI should be ditched altogether, except for perhaps one slot. I love the slot layout of that Asus X58 workstation mobo, all slots are PCI-E 16x (maybe they aren't all 16x electrically though). I've had two PCI cards ever, and they both were sound cards.
I think that DFI has go their design for the M2RS series spot on with regards to the PCI-E x16 slots. Three is enough for GPU's as a fourth in crossfire makes a negligible difference and I'm not a big fan of having two GPU's on one graphics cards.
Yeah you need the PS/2 port for the keyboard.
My dream AM3 board would probably be a Destroyer 2 tbh. That or an AMD skulltrail equivalent that somehow utilised standard Deneb AMD CPU's as opposed to their more expensive Shanghai brethren.
Believe it or not we are right now in this thread, there are those that are watching  or so i've been told.
Instead of whining as whining gets no where you start a constructive thread on what youd like to see, with good logical reasons behind it.
It's been done before, whether or not they take all of the advice is up to them.
Just keep in mind the orginal AM3 design as it will still have to adhere to that.
that said whats people's take on esata, is 2 necessary via the I/O?
The DFI layout is spot on. as i need 2 free PCI lots for Soundcard & TV card when i have 2 double slot PCIE gfx cards in place 1 IDE int for my 2 Plextor DVDRW drives...the rest is in the sig.
Also more Phases on the PWM as i keep hearing to much of Mosfets blowing on AMD boards but hear little of that from Intel users.
A Manta/grouper quality PWM will be more than sufficient thats why I referenced it.
I had one blow up on grouper, this was of course after my wife shut the pc off and left the phase unit on which froze the entire board unbeknown to me, when i turned it on It went pop. Plenty strong enough, only thing that can kill it is user error/abuse as in my situation.
This is close not quite perfect but close.....sapphire has always held very close to AMD/ATI reference design

Sapphire , Looks like it may house a beefier PWM than manta had. Edit maybe not 580 was 6phase. clip from board specs. 6 Phase Vcore + 1 phase NB digital PWM design
Review http://www.cluboc.net/reviews/mother...90FX/index.asp
http://members.cox.net/bostonreefer1/reference2.jpg
The Sapphire board is the DFI board. Just some swapped colors.
How would we get our hands on the top board? Me likes a lot...
Chances are that board is long history, It's the same as my manta reference. It's made for testing etc. It was probably floating around a good 6 months before 790 boards came out.
Would probably have a better chance on getting a DDR3 variant at this point in time. I'd bet money they are floating around right now or very close to done.
I can't complain at my Gigabyte DQ6 PWM section. It was first among AMD boards to use 8+2 PWM and I've put through it more than 200W for a considerably length of time with no problem at all and no voltage fluctuation.
2 eSATA is desired
Better BIOS support is a must, especially undervolting is a feature I miss most in my 790FX board.
Cheers!
I don't know, I think the MSI K9a2 Plat still has the best slot layout, especially when it comes to the fact that it has for x16 slots. Even if you're not using all 4 for graphics you can still install a slower x1-x8 card into the ones your not using. That and it's been one of the best for Tinkering in the bios depending on which bios you use.
As far as getting rid of PS/2 ports I don't know about that, there are still a great many new boards that won't boot up the first time unless you have a ps/2 keyboard or mouse to get into the bios and set it up properly. That, and when you're trying to troubleshoot stability issues, those are the best ports to use. I'm kinda sad they got rid of serial ports for the most part. Nothing can beat one of the old serial port USR sportster modems when you're stuck with dial up, since most PCI or USB modems are far too sensitve to line quality, and distance when it comes to getting a consistantly max speed connection. I resisted switching to a board with no ISA slots for a long time for the same reason, add to that the fact that at the time most of the best soundcards were ISA cards, Soundblaster AWE64 gold for example. Now as far as regular PCI slots go, I could live without them, or as long as I have one for my soundcard till I can get a newer PCIe version. PCI has far outlived it's usefulness, did that after AGP came out.
IDE ports are still useful to have around, many people still use older IDE drives, especially when it comes to DVD/CD burners, and backup HDD's. Floppy ports I'm kinda 50/50 on. Bout the only time I use floppy is for good old fashioned bios flashing. USB flashing still isn't stable enough, and it's easier to boot from a floppy than it is a flashing drive or card reader.
I will be happy to see ps2 go honestly, but why is it so difficult for some mobos to see usb? It's odd for instance my Abit IP35 pro the only gripe I have with it is I can use my usb keyboard all day long in the bios but if I'm screwin around and I restart my comp and it does that 30 seconds or press key to start windows normally it doesn't recognize the keyboard. So odd, so I guess I'm curious when mobos are going to get up to snuff without error
Me too. My last three boards have worked flawlessly with USB keybaords and mice. The same goes for IDE too IMHO. We don't need that 22 year old legacy interface anymore. For the folks that insist on keeping and using devices on that antiquated bus, please just get an IDE to SATA adapter or an IDE card. New PCs don't need IDE controllers.
--Matt
I would agree that you might have problems getting into bios with a USB keyboard, As far as I can remember and its been a long road ive never needed the mouse in bios or was able to use it ;)
As far as flash drives not being stable, I have xp installed on one ;) and have had alot more floppy disks corrupt mid flash.
With the prices @ $100 on sale for a BD/DL DVD burner/lightscribe and every other format known to man components using IDE are soon to follow the path of the parralel printer port. I do agree 1 Ide is not unreasonable.
4 x16 sized slots will only cost us more, performance with 4x 4870 versus 2 4870x2 is negligible and the 4870x2 wins most of the time. Secondly the AM3 design only supports 2 x16 slots anyway. I could see where 3 might have potential for a wider variety but then again you could always run and 4870x2 and single 4870 which would make more sense than having 2 cards x16 and one x8.
IDE if your going to use a raid card because they don't support CD/DVD/Blu-ray drives.....
4 pci-express slots at 2.0 are going to need a lot of power to support them for 16x, I wonder if x58 boards have all 6 slots at 8x.
on side note adding suff like this
32mb-256mb sound card cache
64mb-2gb Raid cache DVD supported
512mb-2gb video gddr3 to gddr5
fully integrated 7.1 sound DVI HDMI display port, coaxial and optical support.
4 pci express x16 slots all fully 2.0 1-3 pci express slots 1-3PCI slots. up to 10 slots. belike adding it to the bottom of the board like and expansion for the motherboard and . with a dust cover when not in use
TV tuner integrated with High end video card and cooling soultion. low end card for 2Dand vista areo clock low power mode.
all would = $1,000 for the board.
I agree 2 x16 slots are enough, but as things stand At the moment only the DFI allows 2 double slot cards with 2 free PCI slots & the only reason im use 4 single slot cards is because my DFI failed & was the only way to get Quad GPU & get 2 PCI lots on other mobos.
DFI should get rid of the 3 PCIe slot on the end.

"Now onto the AM3 platform definition. Socket AM3 is designed to exclude AM2 and AM2+ parts – has DDR3-1333 memory support. Thermal monitoring is moving over entirely to Thermal Sense Interface (TSI) monitoring – no more Diode based monitoring. Phasing out of Diode based monitoring has already begun with current products being pressed and net yet shipped. PCI VR control is also scheduled to be phased out for all future AM3 processors."
What is the PCI VR control? What is it for?
Voltage regulator?
Alot more than a voltage regulation, explained here If it doesn't have multiple meanings > http://www.tarek.com/pcie_overview.htm
chew* that board looks like ddr2
ddr2 notches are more centric whereas ddr3 notches are more to one side.
Erm... sorry for the noobish question, but the above motherboard which AMD CPU's will that support.
I don't suppose its too much to hope for an AMD Skulltrail equivalent?
Have you ever heared something about the ASUS M4A78 PRO?
ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/asus/mb/socketAM2/M4A78_PRO/
You can inspect it with that tool (found on rebelhaven).
http://www.lejabeach.com/sisubb/AMIBCP313.zip.
I skimmed over the bios strings seems it's an DDR2 board (see bios strings at 0x069F).
Personal needs:
- One PS/2 (I'm still using a 1st gen Microsoft Internet Keyboard and quite enjoy it, thank you)
- 4+ DIMM slots
- 3 PCIe x8 or better slots
- 1 PCIe x1 or better slot
Other than that I'm pretty flexible.
My Asus M3A79-t deluxe has one PS2 that does either Mouse or keybaord..kinda nice if you need it.
The dang 790FX can do dual CPUs I want a board with dual NORMAL not server CPUs.
8x8
8 Cores 8 GPUs
8x8
Screw the old 4x4 idea.
If you did that it might be a trap:)
Gonna see If I can do a cheesy board layout as I don't have a nice program to do it, see what it looks like with all thats been mentioned. I realized one thing, that if we have widely spaced crossfire that a single PCI will have to be above the x16 slot and not below it.
Drop firewire.
Drop onboard sound.
Ensure there's 2 onboard NICs.
FarTooMany Stage VRM, with standard mounting fittings so we can all get aftermarket VRM blocks in the same way as CPU blocks. Charge an extra £20 to pay for it by all means, but overkill on the VRM for nice smooth power.
No heatsinks or fans, on NB/SB/VRM I don't want to pay for something I immediately throw it away. Have it as an optional extra.
Make a backplate that actually fits, or just don't bother. Edit : I mean an I/O plate thingy.
Stop giving me IDE/SATA cables, I threw a box of them out. A HUGE box.
Nobody wants external SATA, stop it.
NO I ran out of cables the other day!!!!
Installing OEM drives in other peoples machines eats them up.
I would opt for just more usuable cables, etc 90 degree sata's but now this stuff is trivial. motherboard design and layout is of utmost importance, bundled stuff is trivial.
Please stick with two colors max! I want some sexy black and orange or black and red, like you do for the Intel board. Even black and purple :D
And we want 8+2 power sections. Don't be scimping with w 4+1 ot 5+1 :shakes:
waitting for the new generation of AMD
Good I checked this thread first, was about to post it:p:
Well, what can I say... it actually doesnt feel like 'Oh yeah', it's just like current motherboards but with DDR3 slots. But, it does mean Deneb is coming very close now, and that's awesome:D
One major thing Im hoping for is motherboard manufacturers will start producing good quality products now for AM3, from Asus more ROG boards and from DFI more UT boards. Because right now it's just retarded IMO:shakes:
I hope the manufactores soon trash that ugly ass yellow :s havent seen it being pretty on any boards.
Being this I refer to: http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/New...uID=13&LanID=0
The MSI is actually 790FX-GD70 and 790GX-G65 BUT why only
Supports four dual-channel DDR3 1333 memory slots up to 16GB
I thought DDR3 was going triple channel??
So once again AMD is a step behind Intel ........ nice
Not on AMD. The same chipset can be recycled over and over again as the only contact it has with the memory is through the HT link it has with the CPU. That's why all first gen AM3 boards are going to feature the venerable 790FX/GX that we've known and loved for the last year.
Why would you need triple channel on desktop  ?? Except for triple cost of course... Dual channel ddr3 IMC/memory combination will be quite enough even for 6 core parts in AM3 package.
AMD will skip triple and will go for 4 channels in server segment ,with combo IMCs in the case of the MCM of Deneb/Shanghai in 2010(the reason behind quad channel is the MCM module nature of the chips).
Let's keep it real here: Triple channel memory controllers do offer an advantage, but it's far from universal. Just like in the old days when dual channel DDR controller debuted, not everything benefits and there are some drawbacks. I say do it when it makes sense financially. Until then, I've got no problem with dual channel.
w/ triple channel are you limited to 3/6/9/12gb of ram? seems kind of odd, 3 is kinda low these days, 6 isnt enough to disable page file, 9 would have to be 3x2gb and 3x1gb which would be 2 different kits aka not ideal and 12gb would be too much memory and $$$ at the time.
Well for 1, not everyone runs vista, for 2 not everyone runs 64 bit so....since xp only recognizes 3.5 max ( in most boards w/XPsp3 32bit ) 3g is just fine. Vista 32bit only recognizes 4g I think in 32bit......
