Koolance CPU-350 Pictures!

Previously I posted some pictures of our upcoming CPU-345 blocks. The CPU-350 will be released alongside the CPU-345, but will offer better performance in higher pressure systems. Like the CPU-345, the CPU-350 will be available with either an acrylic or black acetal top.

Looks a lot like the EK Supreme's design, but I see influences of GTZ as well.

Looks like it could be solid. I'm interested in seeing the numbers...

Interesting looking block. I'm curious, what type of glue/epoxy do you guys use to secure the thread inserts?

It surely looks nice. A little restrictive maybe, but it's designed for higher pressure loops so that could work out. The base is nickel-plated copper I pressume...?

Looks promising. Definitely hints of the GTZ going on there, but the inlet pathway looks like it might be a little smoother. Also good that the top plate doesn't shroud the chipset/socket area like the 330/340 designs did.

i'll post up a review as soon as i get mine.

Actually it is bowed. We did a lot of testing in regards to stepped vs bowed and got our best temps with the bowed design.

Also it will include two brackets, one for Intel and one for AMD. It should support all sockets except 462 and F. :)

I think the nickle is so you can use it with the aluminum rads they make witha little less risk of corrosion. Same reason their old blocks were gold plated.

Not really, if anything copper oxides that would usually form have a bigger effect on performance (still very very small). Nickel is better for estetics and it will keep the loop cleaner and somewhat more safe if there's any aluminum in it, though I wouldn't count on it.

*edit* Copper does help against microbes though, but usually in a loop the water will contact copper directly somewhere else so that shouldn't be a problem.

Can I get a job as a psychic? ( I called this over 2 weeks ago) good move on koolance's part, sucks for swiftech to have spent R&D designing the GTZ just to have it ripped off.

There are only so many ways you can make a block. I really don't think it is a rip off of the GTZ, but as I stated, you can only make a block so many ways.

Theres a reason why I asked for internals...

Threw the top the grid array on the bottom looks awfully familiar...

Pin Matrices look a lot alike to...a bunch of pins. So a micro-channel and pin matrix design is going to look similar.

Why all the speculation of copying, Dean knows the community here...do you think he would come to post and unveil the new Koolance block if it was a duplicate design from another well known company? Sure, there are going to be similarities between blocks, lots of LC companies collaborate...just quit with all of the negative insinuation when a company comes here to give us news and details on an upcoming product.

As for it being a copy... I'm not really sure how to respond. Water blocks are fairly simple, not many ways you can make them different. In terms of design/ascetics it looks very different from the GTZ, I think what people are seeing is that the bracket looks similar. As for internally, we do use a micro-grid that is similar to the GTZ, but I hardly think that because they both have pins that one must be a rip off of the other :p:. I don't think you need to defend yourself to most of us here. Most of us are just looking for good products that perform well. Thanks for posting pics of your new block here, I'm looking forward to seeing pricing and internal pics as well.

TBH I wasn't bashing for a copy, I think you guys are very smart for doing this, its a win-win for the customer :yepp:

Stolen? Nah. You, generally, only have 3 basic current designs for bottoms that work well: micro-pins, micro-channels and the old school pyramid style pins. You can only do so much with those 3 patterns. Outside of that, you have free reign with the actual design work of the top, which is what Koolance has done.

I like the idea of the inlet being off center and carved into the piece, it might work very well - and if restriction is low, I wonder how will it would do with a nozzle there. Only time and tests will tell.

Sorry, but the Big 3 cpu blocks of today, The D-tek Fuzion v2, EK Supreme, and Swiftech GTZ are all completely different designs. And look nothing like each other.

If they can all come up with their own designs any company can.

I'll with-hold final judgment until I see pictures of the internals, but I definitely see A LOT of GTZ in this block.

But if you just look at all those blocks strictly from its structure they are all the pretty much the same. The only difference that sets them apart are its design aspects. They all obviously look different but no matter how you slice it the structure of everyone of those blocks come from the same idea.

Structure is one thing.

Each of the big three uses a completely different method of transferring heat.

D-tek, water forced through a nozzle onto an array of tall cylindrical pins.

EK, water forced through a spread nozzle to be passed though ultra fine fins.

Swiftech, water is forced across and grid of extremely short and small pins/ square bumps.

As far as I can tell the Koolance one uses this exact same style.^^^

aspire, so, under that idea, DD copied D-tek for using tall cylindrical pins? How about OCZ, that uses pins, but triangle shaped? There is a design limit around bottoms - looks/tops are totally a different discussion. All companies out there are trying to cool the exact same component, whose thermal profile doesn't change all that much. evil said it best: it's all based on the same idea - you can only design a bottom differently so many times before you start seeing reiterations of the same design pattern.

Well, I seem to remember when the GTZ came out many said it was very close to the design of the D-Tek V2. I will give you that the Supreme is unique with the razor blade like design to force water onto the block, but it has been around for over a year. Again, you can only design a block so many ways and to say that Koolance isn't innovative is bashing and wrong on so many levels. I have owned the D-Tek v1, the Supreme, the Apogee GT and the Enzotech Sapphire and other than the Supreme they all had similarities but I never came to the conclusion one ripped off the other or that they were not innovative. It is very rude to comment in this way when a manufacture comes and posts their product here and you haven't even had one in hand. Buy one, along with the D-Tek v2 or GTZ and post a thread showing where they are similar in design and make your accusations then. Until then, bite your tongue and be glad that manufactures actually post here letting us know about new products before most sites can even post the release notes.

Bro, until you've attempted block design, please don't say it's just that easy.

I expect to see a lot of the same. There might be some interesting ones (Ybris ACS, G4/G5/G7) but mostly you can only manipulate water in so many ways. Even the interesting ones bring their own limitations.

In this circumstance, it looks like they EPDMed the base, and then added a nozzle rather than letting it flow corner to corner. That's an innovation. It angles flow right where the heat is, and then channels it out-much like a Fuzion. Very efficient design from here, though I wanna see how it tips up. I think I might want a block like that if it performs like it looks like it will.

Unless we move to casting or more exotic materials, this is how waterblocks will tend to look, I'm afraid. Not that I have an issue with it. Once I learned my math, I realized just how little we could do to some of these designs...

Not to say I've given up, I'm just trying to learn to machine well enough to do it all myself...

you dont seem to understand that its not just cuz its koolance, its the EXACT SAME design. mind you I am in no way mad or offended that koolance did this but you cannot deny that this is a simplified carbon copy of the Swiftech GTZ.

the GTZ does not have corner to corner flow, it uses a center inlet just like this block, it uses the same pin grin as this block and it has a bowed base just like this block, the only difference is in the top design and outer design.....

If the middle square matrix is even 1mm longer or shorter, then you carbon copy explaination is toss'd right out the door.

If you take a look at Martin's site you'll see that the flow is corner to corner.

I have to say the the machining quality looks superb! much better than the GTZ's uneven pins

Also, on the GTZ, the outside channels on the block go side to side, where as these go from out to in. Little differences, yes, but still different. I am going say it again, you can only design a water block so many ways.

Can you comment if that's EPDM or slotting saw?

what is the side length of those square pins? looks interesting =) I wouldn't say it's a copy of the gtz. what does epdm stand for?

Meant EDM, it's a method of cutting that can make the supreme seem like it's 1" fins.

You need to take a digital photography class as soon as possible too. :D

is the top 100% cast? (meaning all the threads where formed in the casting process and nothing was cut in the finished product)
this would be a big plus in reducing the posibility of stress cracks.

dean can you talk to the boys in RnD for nozzles like the d-tek fusion we can insert at the core impact plate to tweek pressure and get more performance?

guys like tweekability, and people who run cpu only loops would love the chance to tweek a bit more performance out of the block.

WOOOOOWW, it's openable! Most if not all Koolance blocks have been typically sealed. They've listened again :up:

At this point the only thing I may not like is the pressure drop, but everything else looks great :clap:

Well, we did try a large variety of different hole patterns and sizes and the one on the block ends up having the best temperature, anything smaller will just add pressure without any drop in temp. But I did mention it and they aren't against looking at it.

hI Z You getting one to try...?

I've been looking to retire my Danger Den TDX 'cuz it was getting long in the tooth so I bought the CPU-350AC. I usually run BOINC 24/7 and that loads my cpu 100%. I'm sure there are other apps that put a heavier load but that's what I used. Temps were taken using Everest.

See sig for system specs.

Ambient 73F

Load temps

DD-TDX: 59C
CPU-350: 49C

I was only expecting a improvement of maybe 5 degrees but the 10 degree improvement blew my socks off! :YIPPIE:

For anyone that wants to do some testing we have a small document here. The first page or so is pretty basic, the last part is a bit more specific to the block's internals.

Thanks for the doc! I've got all my blocks on 1 loop and a few high flow quick disconnects in there. Maybe when I get some more money I'll put the CPU-350 on it's own dedicated loop with just compression fittings. For now I'm very happy with my results. :D

Your running all those blocks in a single loop with an Exos and quick disconnects...

Your flow has got to be pretty horrendous... Temps?

I'm using 3/8" ID tubing and I only have a few quick disconnects. Dean said they have 3/8" flow through so resistance is minimal. (link)

The Exos 2.5 is equipped with the PMP-400 (link) I'm not sure how to measure flow rate but just eyeballing it, it looks pretty good. I'm sure if my flow rate was "horrendous" I wouldn't be able to have the temps that I have.

I know this is XtremeSystems forums but I think you can tell from my choice in equipment I'm not as extreme as many of the guys around here are. I'm sure if you follow the doc and use your custom equipment you can achieve better results than I have.
