Official Phenom II 4.0+ Chart

First, a BIG THANKS to Macadamia for posting this today in the News section. I felt it needed posting here for comments. But the credit goes to Macadamia for the source.

Regarding the 940 oveclocks, my interpretation of the 4.0+ chart is that the grey area by 3.8 is the reasonable clock for air. 4.0+ is the reasonable clock for liquid. I think the slightly less than 3.2 clock for 9950 on the chart is reasonable and adds to credibility of 940 chart.

The other good news that I forgot to point out is that the 940 is an unlocked multiplier version. I personally thought this would only come in June with the FX version.

Core i7 920 vs. Phenom 2 X4 920?

This is good as long as the price is right though.

Will the AM3's really only be 95 watt? If so, a 925 coupled with one of these http://www.jwele.com/motherboard_detail.php?419 will make the ultimate HTPC.

I'm not sure I trust the veracity of the slide.

It doesn't seem logical to use the same numbers as Intel. (In fact when I first saw it... and saw the same numbers... I immediately wondered why someone would create such an obviously fake slide.)

But I guess we'll find out.

That is the only possible reason this might be real.

anyone noticed AM3 takes drr2 1066mhz or ddr3 1333mhz.

as for the phenom II 920 vs i7 all we're seeing for i7 is synthetic benchmarks, not many games.

The only phenom II we got is a few deneb screen shots of 4.0ghz-4.3ghz and a superPI.

Yeah i can feel the FX is coming back in Q1/Q2 also :up: .By the look of things clockwise,i expect a BE 3Ghz AM3(DDR3) part in March and 3.2/3.3GHz FX part in April or May time frame.:)

last time I seen any new 700Awtih ACC board it mentioned January, might be a later thought amd said there AM3 chips would be out before any AM3 motherboards

Looking at the pics, there is no AM3 (940) only AM2+ 940, the 945 will most likley be the AM3 equivalent of the 940, and my guess is that it will have same clock speed as well..

The planned release of the X3 720 Phenom II @ 2.8Ghz with unlocked Multi might be interesting as well, especially if (as I believe will be the case) that the prices of the new Phenom II range will be a lot higher than previously anticipated.

I hope not, as if they are priced to highly I'll probably just make do with my 9950 for a while...!!!

I am actually a tad worried about the pricing. If they are as expensive as, or only 'just,' cheaper than Nehalem I will be sorely tempted to switch back over to Intel. Though the X58 motherboard prices are ridiculous.

On a second look, you must be right, when comparing the 920 and the 925, same clock, but am2+ vs am3.

This slide smells fishy. BTW, what happen to the November release that was rumored to happen? AMD need to release some official new or my money will be going toward another Intel system. All this waiting with no "official" news is getting a tad lame. With the launch being so close there should be something coming from the horses mouth.

Slide is not fishy and is (yet) unofficial since Phenom II hasn't launched yet.As for OCing headroom we have already seen 3.6-4.2Ghz OCs from non retail C1 steppings from MSI engineer over at coolaler's forum who is also a member here(toppc).

As for the launch date,i guess AMD wants a real launch and not slideware on the day they announce it.

Because they run at different speeds.

3 Ghz, 125 W, and later 2.8 GHz, 95 W. That's not really a big drop in TDP. They just haven't included the upcoming AM3 BE in that pic yet.
Besides, BE's usually have a higher TDP than locked counterparts.

Are you sure the new Phenoms were suppose to be released and you are not confusing the Shanghai release date with this one? Just curious as I know the server counterparts were just released. I have not seen anything official stating the desktop versions being released this early. Could be wrong though.

I'll go one further on the theory of the 965FX as well, to cover AM2+ and AM3 variants of the Phenom II Black Edition, as it were:

Possibly siilar to the 7-series chipsets they may follow suit so:

Phneom II 965X = AM2+ Phenom II @ 3.2Ghz with Unlocked Multiplier
Phenom II 965FX = AM3 Phenom II @ 3.0Ghz with Unlocked Multiplier

So any Phenom II model #, with an X - would be an unlocked AM2+ Phenom II.
Any Phenom II model # with an FX on the end would be an unlocked AM3 Phenom II.
Any Phenom II with just a Model # ending with 0 would be a standard locked AM2+ Phenom II
Any Phenom II with a Model # ending with "5" would be a AM3 locked multi Phenom II.

That would work don;t you think...

There is a thread right here at XS claiming a Nov. release. Though :google: is your friend. Either way it goes, I am not waiting until Feb 09 to upgrade. I'll just go Core i7 and call it a day. AMD :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:foots around too much for me and my fanboism toward their company has depleted.

I think those mid-low numbers like 940 for a 3.0Ghz part are a really good sign of the potential of this new processors. AMD is leaving plenty of room for better and faster models.

What do you think about those 8xx models with just 6MB cache? How they make it? No L2? 1/3 of L3 disabled?

just so i am not missing anything, the Phenom 940 will be for socket AM2+ right? And from the looks of it is that the highest we will see for AM2+ with everything else listed being for AM3 that is for 2Q09? Also, i thought i say a post today showing am3 transition starting in 4Q08 and while i dont think that will happen when they release the new 45nm X4's is that also suppose to be the release of the new socket?

Starting to get confused with all the new naming schemes coming out so close together ;)

EDIT: looked it up and see that the 940 is for the AM2+ so no need to answer that one. AM3 is still simply slated for 1Q09 but is there any indication of it being on the Jan8 release date as well?

I have to admit this Phenom2 info has me more excited than the i7 stuff, i have a feeling AMD have been working hard to bring performance up a little..and remember its platform performance they are working on,you have to couple this CPU with the new boards featuring sb750 and 4XXXGPU to get the full effect.

I can't wait to see initial benches around 4GHZ, where is Macci when you need him?? LOL

Overall this is exciting and something the industry does need IMO

The PFET performance improvement is more dramatic with drive current now up to 660 µA/µm compared with 510 µA/µm on 65-nm transistors. Again, this increased output current is the result of optimized compressive strain for the p-channel device. The new design of the PFET moves the embedded silicon-germanium source/drain regions closer to the channel to maximize the transfer of stress, thereby increasing hole mobility. Imho the overclockability steams for somewhere else. :yepp:

Intel Pmos driver current is 1070µA/µm, 62% better then AMDs, and if this slides are correct they can reach the same oc on air as york/nehm.

Channle leakage was expected to be low due to SOI. :yepp:

I thought the same. But with further study on the tables that is not the case. Look the 910 should be 905 because is an AM3 model and 915 should be a 2.7Ghz AM3 proccesor. There is no consistency across the naming scheme.

the coldbug with phenom doesn't seem to be related to HTT reference clock speeds anymore. and chips that boot under cold at stock settings will overclock under that cold. this means some major changes happened along the road, but we haven't kept track, as all the cold "fun" is at intel's feet.

I wish they would release the freaking X2 7000 line of chips already as AMD has been hurting real bad by not having a dual core solution that can match the core2 crap intel offers for an arm and a leg. Hopefully the prices on these new AM2+ chips will not be over $250.

Yeah I agree they need some nice dual cores out too. Phenom/Agena wasn't enough of a boost to warrant a new X2 I don't think, but this looks to be much more promising so a 45nm X2 would be nice.

PURE SPECULATION WARNING: If I read the above right, then high-k metal gates in the FX models will provide even more overclocking potential. Since i7 has metal gates, wouldn't the above chip design plus metal gates allow FX to leapfrog i7 overclocking performance. I mean if you can get 4.0+ without metal gates on a Phenom II then the chip should turbocharge forward with the FX design that has metal gates..... :up:

You sure? I have been seeing a lot of screenshots of SuperPi and Prime95 stable 3.4GHz 9950s since the SB750 came out.

Where the hell did you get this High-K/metal-gates on the FX story from? All I've seen is that AMD had/has plans to at High-K/metal-gates to their 45 nm. process in the second half of 2009, but the recent road-maps did not have this 'revision' on them anymore and that they would introduce it at their 32 nm. process node. That's why I would like to have more concrete information on this, as it all seems to be (or is) rumors.

Hmmm, now we've read that though... high/k and metal gates do not guarantee improvement. I dont know really, but what if their 'trick' isnt able to use with high/k and metal gates, then they're actually worse. That's for power consumption and leakage though, I dont know if high/k and metal gates would improve clocks.

I will upgrade CPU when the dust and price settle in Feb, March:)

Not really. The spider platform already is comprised of the 790FX, Radeon 3k/4k graphics, and a Phenom. For someone to go from Spider to Dragon just means a CPU swap.

No. Spider is 790FX/600, Phenom and Radeon 3xxx.
Dragon is 790FX(GX)/750, Phenom II and Radeon 4xxx.

There is some slide about this.

So then my system is post-Spider and has no fancy label. I'm still one upgrade away from being a Dragon.

Give me one reason why they would only use the process for their FX chip, if there even will be one? It should give them higher yields if everything goes as it should be.

AMD said that theirs current 45nm SOI based transistors have less electrical leakage than Intel's HKMG ones. I'm not sure at all that the AMD is going to use the HKMG on 45nm. The reason is simple: it's not necessary. :)

AMD said that theirs current 45nm SOI based transistors have less electrical leakage than Intel's HKMG ones. I'm not sure at all that the AMD is going to use the HKMG on 45nm. The reason is simple: it's not necessary. :)

Agreed......What I find interesting is their upcoming 32nm with HKMG. Defo a step up in the right direction looking at how well the 45nm is doing without the technology.

I look at this, then look at all the guys who said that SOI totally sucks and is crap and bulk/HKMG is the only way to go and AMD is stupid for using it blah blah blah..... And I say, "owned." :p:

SOI apparently just needed some more work :)

link in thread here they did a little tweaking of transistor design on SOI at 45nm and they strained at 45nm.

kinda similar as to what a redesign of shaders where for the 4000 series. expect this was transistors and not shaders.

Oh, that reminds me of my maths teacher. First I thought he was cool, listened to metal, played games etc. Untill once he caught a discussion between me and a friend what PC I was going to buy. He was seriously anti-AMD, while that was in the Prescott days and he denied every part of Prescott being a retarded error and he was pro-Ati. He couldnt give one single reason not to get an nVidia card, nor could he back up his denial for the certain failure Prescott was...

Most funny part now, AMD owns ATI pretty much. Already left school when that happened, Im wondering what he thought about that lol.

Anyhow, point being that a lot of teachers are quite arrogant and think they know it all. I think I know a lot, but Im open for other suggestions and such. If some suggestion proofs me wrong or whatever, I'd say so. Although this teacher never got me turn my mind. And oh yes, he was also 34, living with his parents and complaining about how bad it is to be a teacher:ROTF:

Nothing wrong with being pro-ati, I am :p: Although I do know the strengths of nvidia cards too and have no problem saying they are faster when they are. I forget what the top cards from both sides were during the prescott days.
