Good news for everyone. I'm left to wonder though. If nVidia drops their prices by much, aren't they going to start burning cash like Microsoft did back in the day with the Xbox?

I thought they pretty much already were since ATI undercut them so much.

I hope this doesn`t mean that the GTX290 will be priced the same as GTX280 was on release date.

$300-350 GTX280? Count me in for a second one. I was waiting for this to happen :)

Hopefully this will be just in time for my new build. If not I'll step up and take advanatghe of it on the 290's. :)

Hmm if these drop enough perhaps ill get 2 280GTX's for my build in Q2 09...

ATI has much more margin to cut price then Nvidia because it´s working on 55nm and have worked on those 55nm since HD 3xxx giving them high experience with the 55nm.
Also HD 4000 series have very high performance/mm^2.

thats good so I can buy a second GTX280.

I think these sound fair:

GTX 280 - 340$
GTX 260 Core 216 - 240$
GTX 260 - 200$
9800GTX+ - 145$
9800GT - 99$

All still overpriced, except for the GTX260. And they won't make a profit on those low-end parts... not that I'd be complaining. The 9800GTX+ would die though--it can't stand up to the HD4830.

As far as I know the 9800GTX+ is just a bit faster than the 4830 on average. The difference is not like night and day, but still. The 4850 is clearly faster on average though.

Agreed, I'm pretty sure this will happen, the 55nm cards will end up costing roughly the same as the GTX260 and 280 currently while the older cards getting a (slight) pricecut. Now if NVIDIA can release the 55nm cards in early-mid December it would be nice but I don't urgently need a new card yet due to my low res but I'm open for great performance/price offerings like this 8800GT I bought late last year. Want something newer than current GT200 or ATI 48xx series tho.

Market share is not everything.
ATI lost market share and now is wining it back again. By the end of Q4 2008 AMD and Nvidia should divide the discrete market share by 50-50.

In the end the good news are the release of new arquitecture and new tech. Lose or not to lose market share is not so important. The GPU market has drastic changes from quarter to quarter.

RV770 is destroying Nvidia market because:
- ATI launched entire lineup with new arquitecture from 50$ to 550$ in 3 months.
- Nvidia GT200 arquitecture sucks a lot. They can´t scale it down to the 50$-100$-200$ and have to rely on old tech to those markets. On the other side ATI arquitecture scale from 50$ to 550$. That with strong performance is the cause of Nvidia giant drop in market share (almost 10% in 1 year).

For now the only air ballon that Nvidia have is IGP in Intel and the fact that HD 4000 mobile didn´t launched yet, but even that is going to finish this quarter. Once ATI bring HD 4000 mobile it will destroy Nvidia 9xxx mobile and new drop in market share will hit Nvidia again.

So the next big Nvidia problem will be HD 4000 mobile. MSI has anouced already one notebook with HD 4850 mobile and it already tops the single chip top end Nvidia 9800GTX mobile in performance.

HWC with the latest drivers from both parties said they are equal(the 4850).

In the end HWC gave the nod to the gtx9800+ for the sake of support and warranty, since prices were pretty equal in price. Add in a clearly better fan and you have a decision which is not as clear cut as some people want it to be.

Thias quarter things will be very different. ATi won't be able to ride the Crossfire on Intel train any longer, and SLI and Tri SLI setups are making a big showing here already from what I've seen. It looks there might be another GPU coming but we don't know when yet. Rumors are before the end of the year, but I know I'm not gonna base anything on rumors.

We had a huge thread on here about a new GPU that was gonna be released Oct 22nd . :shakes: What a huge blunder. I knew it wasn;t coming, but only hinted at it becasue like the rumor had no proof, I had none to the contrary.

It's the same thing again. It will be nice if they release, but until they do and I actually see it, it didn't happen.

GT200 was never intended to be a cheap GPU. It's a powerhouse beast for the big screen gamer who wanted massive power, but like everything it's a tradeoff. You don;t get something for nothing, and we got one that ran on the warm side. I won;t say hot, becasue I've seen hot, and while that was on the thin line it still wasn't what I'd call a hottie. Water also keeps them under control nicely.

I'm anxious to see how the shaders clock on these new ones if and when they come out. If they bump the clocks up, shrink and have good IGP look out!

I get this impression that the GTX280's we rolled out to satify the hi-po crown for a bit while they worked on shrinks, but I may be very wrong on that. Just a theory I have had which is meaningless until we hear actual first hand info from nVidia. I really don't like spreading speculation.

I was only responding to Bobsama's remark in which he said that a 4830 was faster than a 9800GTX+, which is pretty ridicules. All I did afterwards was check this review:

Where it's pretty obvious that the 4850 is faster than the 9800GTX+.

Cheaper for the masses!!!
Though NVIDIA needs better performance too :up:

I just want to see power consumption and pricing for GTX270/290. :D

Price drops around Christmas time?

Now I just need the AUD to strengthen and make the prices drop below what they were before, rather than just offsetting the increases.

if nvidia wanna make $$$ they should let us sli on intel chipsets
i went back to ati just cause of that
i woulda bought another 8800gt but odds are i'll get another 4870 if need be
