M3A79-T Seriuosly HIGH VOLTS,,not for the weak

Well after 6hours of trying ACC and other settings i could not get the VID above 1.55v for the CPU..I was setting ACC which would lower the VID and set vcore higher...I also did not raise the Vcore above 1.587 while i was using ACC ,,It would always crash...

This only gave me 3.5ghz @1.60vcore Stock NB and 800mhz ram.
To no availe after numerouse reboots and that stup "CPU overvoltage crap at post "i decided to raise Both Vcores until they reached 1.55vid = 1.70v:D

This Mobo is great but ASUS Fubared the 302 and 401bios...I noticed that the CPU is exactly 10c HOTTER vs my TA770 @ the Same Volts and that the CPU vcore temp would read generally what my SB600Chip set temp did on the TA770.

After looking in BIOS and putting two and two together i noticed that the Bios reports 38c for my CPU but its actually 28c..This is ah messed up and 38c is what my Chip set is suppose to read.. So confusing ...So i Cranked up the Volts and @1.70vcore and added 600mhz to the NB and my temp only went up 2c.

So with that in mind i knew i wasnt over my temp limit to boot..When i had less vcore i could not run 2400nb..That was the first sign i knew something wasnt reporting correct either temps or volts..It was Both.

So to me this means The ASUS is way off temp wise. ALSO That ACC function i disabled it ,,pretty much useless with this Bios its so buggy. It was lowering the VID when i needed it higher for CPU and NB...and seems only -2 -4 and +2 +4 worked if anything...

They need to put a Hex in for CPUVID and NBVID along with the regular volt settings..To Reach all the Same speeds that i had with the TA770 i had to turn off ACC period.. It will work good for some and worse for others...All i know is that when i had ACC on i created more problems ,,Not booting after shutdown and some time locking up in windows. Once i turned it of No More Headache.

The Mobo is definatly fast and More Stable with the SB750 ,,but has Bios Issues..1066 was very buggy to boot and i had to use my patriot 800's before i could install the Dominators...

Besides that Everest and Supi looks good using just 1100mhz ram..This chip will boot windows @ 3.6 but is not stable yet..I need a better Bios ..This one lacks the Vids and memory optimizations ..

Im gonna tweak it more ,,but at end of week if 3.55 is all i can get i may exchange it for the 790FXB wich has the VID's in hexadecimal which id really like to use with ACC :D . The Mobo its self dosnt run hot at all...It seems to report everything higher than what it is..This 9950 is now 10c hotter in the 79-T even under load..

1.65vcore = 1.55vid this is for both CPU and NBvolts

Also see how the Bios Downclocked the Volts in the first screen ,,@ those volts my chip will only be 20c on the TA770..Tha twas the first thing that led me to cranking the volts,,

Now look in CORTEMP see the VIDs
@3450mhz//2400+nb is with out ACC @1.55vid,,

@3502 and only 2000mhz nb with +2 and it lowered my VID alot ,,
Using ACC i could not keep the VID's high enuff to run More than 3.5/2000 with out ACC messing up. No matter wher i set Vcore values.

No ACC and my trick of 1.55vid

As you can see @3.5ghz/2600+nb my temps are 10c above what it should be..This same Overclock on my TA770 took 1.55vid and +.038v =1.61volts for both the CPU/NBvid's..

This 79-T is showing 1.7vcore @ 1.55vid's..If i lower the Vcore and or Vids i can NOT run this high..Also when i subtract 10c off my temp values its right in line with what the 9950 does on the TA770.

To top things off the 9950 and SB600 vs 9950 SB750

The Asus 79-T is only a little faster,,
Insanly handles the Power I push and can add three cards down the road if needed..Did i say Looks better too and SB750 is more stable...Coming from the TA770 its a nice improvment even if i cant sqeeze more from this first revision 140watt 9950:up:

Thanks m8, your doing an awesome job.

Concerning ACC, I think it's just as AMD stated. The better the chip the less improvement with ACC. And as you already reached these frequencies on your sb600 you must have some kickass chip ;)

Here is my buglist: (BIOS: 0403 official, board rev.: 1.01G )

1. Under 100% load the CPU temperature which reported by the mainboard is approximately 10-12C degrees more than the cores temperature (which reported by the CPU itself eg. via AOD). I think it's an unreal value and it causes some trouble. (eg. higher CPU FAN speed than necessary)

2. When the CPU temp (which is incorrectly reported by the mainboard) reaches the approx. 64-70C degrees the system automatically switches back the CPU's multiplier to 6.5x (1300MHz). It results that the systems slow down significantly. (The Cool and Quiet is disabled in the BIOS.) I haven't met this kind of thing on DFI or Gigabyte boards.

3. When I do a Save&Exit in the BIOS the hard drives and the fans stop and suddenly start again (like a very quick power off/on). I think it may cause damage to the hard drives.

4. The motherboard overvolts the CPU under load. For instance when I set 1.35V in the BIOS it means 1.39V under 100% load (reported by PC Probe).

5. The "Advanced Clock Calibration" option in the BIOS has no any effect. Nor yet the overclocking is worse when I turn it to auto or +2%. When I set it to +4% or more the system can't start at all and I have to do a CMOS CLEAR.

i already reported that temp bug in bios to the asus support. they want me to take some screenshots and send them. will do this later today.
i too was freaking out when i saw my cpu temp in bios being reported as 41°C when aod or coretemp was reading 31°C.
also mentioned that acc is kinda useless and does not boot if set to anything other than disabled, auto, all cores. per core acc doesn´t work for me.
i´m priming 3.2ghz/2.4nb@1.4+2%acc as i type this and i can hear my pwm scream ;)
i wonder what´s the sound like at 1.6v...

A rig I put together for a buddy of mine does this, as well. Foxconn Mars P35 mobo. So I think it's normal behaviour. Can't think of a reason why it would harm the hard drives?

Whoa hold on, the new bios update lets you take processor nb above 1.45?! Ive had my cpu set to 1.55v, cpu nb to 1.45 and the other nb set to 1.55... hmm looks like Im ditching 0306 and updating this weekend :D

I believe this is fairly normal behavior for most boards...........they need to write the new settings to cmos, then restart.

All four boards (Jetway Abit, Asus, Gigabyte) I've run a Phenom on have done this. .02-.04 volt rise under load.........think that's normal too.

Strange. I've haven't needed to clear cmos in the 1 month+ I've been running the Asus. Just wait about a minute and it should repost to your previous settings.

So far I've had pretty good luck with the board. I run my 9850 daily @ 3.3 Ghz and 1.4 volts, with ACC set to All Cores +2.

I don't know if I have temp misreadings, but the temps are VERY spiky under high voltage. Definitely something amiss with the whole temp sensor thing.

But the system shutting off after BIOS saves I do have, its weird, the M3A32 that I had did that also. No other board I had ever did it. Its annoying, but I got used to it

My 12V reading in BIOS always says 9V, no matter what power supply I have in there. This one bothers me.... I don't know if my board is bad, or its a bad sensor.

I always find that the mobo raises the VCore somewhat under load. I usually run Everest when stress testing, and I see the same thing you do, but on all most mobos I've played with. Set 1.35-1.375 and it will show 1.39-1.40 under load. I put my lame-oh 9950 in a Gigabyte MA790GP-DS4H and it does exactly the same thing, as do the 780G boards I have too.

I can't tell if ACC works or not, but what I do know is that I can get 3.6Ghz on an 9850 with ACC set to All Cores +2. I also have a lame 9950 that is not affected by ACC (cores 3 and 4 croak regularly). I don't have any booting problems when using ACC.

All in all, I've been mostly satisfied with the M3A79-T, more so than many other high end AMD chipset board I've had except the magnificent DFI 790FX-M2R.

But I agree, there are definitely a few BIOS things that could be done to make it even more accurate and precise. Temps, Voltages and some kind of reading of what in the world ACC is doing (or thinks its doing) would be great!

Well the Mobo overall is running nice and cool...Very pleased so far on BUILD quality "Except for BIOS and HEAPPIPE",,lol typo

Getting used to the wierdness of the Bios is driving me crazy and ive only had the thing to days lol...The 8+2 phase runs like a w_-Dream ..When i first recieved the Mobo I made shure the PWM/North/South heatsinks made 100% flat contact...I actually had to tweak the pip alittle for all three to be perfect flat on the pwm's and chips..Well worth it if one is not going to cool them with water...

Ill try for more later,, If i can have CPUvid and NBfid added or unlocked Via a Mod Bios ill let you guys know,,

Id really want to keep this thing VS having to exchange .If the VID's cant be modded to (AMI BIOS dont work out to my likiing)..ILL get the New DFI790fxb(although this is nice 2 have)...(Personally ASUS looks better and has better heatpipe design ..Plus the Ram slots are spaced far apart for some FLEX2's.

Im not AMI saving for doing mods and Polygon now has a DFI790fxb at hand and is tweaking his Bios for that..So if i go that route it will be super bios swaps again.

Just giving the ASUS a chance before i decide what to do.:yepp:

Also i knew i wasnt the Only one who experianced all the buggyness with the first two Bioses...They will get better by far..Reminds me of the M2N32delux/Chrosshair on steriods,this mobo has the right stuff just needs Bios.

i Dont use EXPRESS mumbojumbo and the CPU VOLT Warning is very anoying..WE BUY THESe THINGS to TWEAK...we dont need to be reminded that we are Hotrodding our stuff right guys/gals.

Hmm once the HTT/FSB is raised it seems to comprimize NB .Mobo goes above 250easy and is flawless up to 292 for me...It probally goes higher seeing my chip kinda tops out around 3.5ghz...Its run 3550mhz on the TA but i havnt evven tried it on this yet..ive been se what Max's i could do @3.5ghz first..im very happy so far..

For me there is little to gain from High HTT/FSB..It seems like it is more responsive but thats it. Now If you have a 9750 or 9650 which can use 11.5 and 12xmulti ..11.5x 292htt = 3358mhz ,,which is not be bad at all. As the Bioses mature i expect to break HTT/300 one day :D

First push went for HTT250 ..With 5000mhzHT @ 3.5ghz//2500mhzNB..

Interesting and i think plauseable too ,,In everest i saw this for thr Phenom IMC,,I know its on the CPU Note: DDR-2 800 DDR-3 800 which is used for 1066 ram timing (Highlighted BLUE BOX) Woulnt they of just put DDR-2 1066? Also When the HTT is set to 250 in ASUS BIOS the MEMORY DIVIDER can READ/show freqencies above 1333mhz ..I really like how it shows the Overclocked Ram in actual freqency (MHZ ).. nice..Does this mean the Phenoms we are running Now have IMC with DDR3 built in? But no one has bothered to write Bios code for it ,,Or is it just covered up as 1066 mode..it really has me thinking ...Will we really need AM3 to run DDR3 or can this Mobo phenom really run it if its programed into Bios to run.

Im shure when 45nm arrives ASUS may suprise us,,I would think they could time the Ram Multis to run 7-7-7-24 DDR3.. SB750 can handle DDR3..they time the 1066 5-7-7-24 by default...I think were gonna be in for a trick and a treat at the end of the month:ROTF:.

Note:
I used patriot 2x 512mb sticks 1gig total..If the Bios crashes id have to put them in any how because the mobo defaults Volts to low (1.5 instead of 1.8v for the Corsair they recomend to run:mad:)
Now that i know whats what in the settings ,, maybe i give a run @300 again with the Dominators. I hate swapping ram when the Bios resets if i mess up..Asus needs to fix that problem fast.

Here my NB degraded abit after I ran her at >1.6V. Did 2.5GHz at 1.55V and 2.4 at 1.45V before now no way to get 2.4GHz stable at 1.55V.
On the AsRock 790GX the board seemed to overvolt alot, saw 1.8V with 1.65V in bios. I tested with an DMM and it was ~1.69V. Max I could apply before the board started to power off at save 3.3GHz was 1.6V on the AsRock790GX and 1.65V on the GBT790GX.

In all go by the Heat output ,, Too High volts will always = too Hot or unstability..

@ day One ive always Booted this CPU @ 1.55CPUvid and 1.55NBvid... I would only add extra volts for Higher CPU clocks above 3.4ghz to CPU while keeping NBvid @1.55:yepp:

It very well could of been the PWM's going south on 790GX....Once they get hot they will not supply enuff to keep the IMC/NB above 2500mhz 24/7..

ALL GX's no matter the brand can still give dirty HOT power when running Phenom @ 3.3 or higher with 2500+nb....

Ive been pushing 2600NB+ for the Last 2months on several Mobos and the 79-T supplies the Best stable volts ATM...I sent back a BIOSTAR 790GX3 and ASUS78-T //Pwm's get to hot and would cause the CPU to become unstable @1.55vid for CPU/NB.. This was @ 3.3ghz with this chip...The 79-T is alot cooler on the Chipsets and Pwm's than both of those and i dont see how people say they run hot :D

Thats why im running such high volts on this thing..If it can handle 1.55vid its a keeper in my book..the Bioses will only make it better.

Note:
some chips may only like 1.5nbvid and some like the Max..Not all chips can run 2500+nb even @3.3ghz...I got real lucky with this one..The average 9950/ 9850's seem to top @ 2500MHZ NB @ 3.2/3.3ghz,,High end air or good water if using 1.55vid... well I know my chip will do 2.400mhz @ 1.3nb volts.

I kinda feel like AMD got the shaft in that section, some of those boards have 10+3 and are digital.

SO people dont get confused...About CPUNB and NBchipset volts

1st,,
Prosessor VOLTAGE =CPU @1.65v = 1.55cpuvid,, You could raise this if you need more when going above 3.5ghz,, lowering vcore will lower VID vlues so @1.60v = 1.50vid,, @1.56v = 1.48vid and so on....I have not used more than 1.65 for 3.5ghz,,but soon will:D

2nd ,,
Prosessor NB voltage(the NB/IMC on your CPU) @1.65v = 1.55nbvid( Do NOT EXCEED THIS) ive never raised this above 1.55vid = 1.65volts on this MOBO for the CPUNB..

1.55vid is the IMC max stable volts for up to 2650mhz nb with great cooling.

Setting the CHIPSETS volts you dont need to exceed 1.30v for any of them with stock cooling .(tested to HTT/FSB292)

Freqencies up to 292x12 did not have to use more than 1.30v period for CHIPSETS..

The only one im still testing is CORE/PCIE voltage .. this should control RAM to CPU stability and not need More than 1.32v max for running High freqency ram at 3.5ghz with High NB/HT..

Since i now know what the CPU/RAM dividers/HT like ill try for 3.6ghz...I dont think this CPU is that good but will try...it is only a 820 chip very old batch.

Remeber im running NONCHILLED water ....

Does running "normal" CAS 5-5-5-15 not work with AMDs?

I think it's for stability reasons.It makes no difference wrt performance but it could potentially stabilize the IMC while memory as at uber high DDR2 clocks.

5-7-7-24, is the auto setting from asus`s bios, if the memory is running a little bit higher (i think over 550)

I just ran the DDR2 @ default with T2 to see what it did stock ..I wanted to see how it ran at the same Speed (freqency) as my old TA770 and it does..I havnt had time to play with HTT above 270 with DDR1066...if a wrong setting happend i would have to put in my other ram becuse it would default Volts to low for Vdim...

The ddr2 1066 is corsair DOMINATOR but ASUS is bugged to boot it when the Bios gets reset...I wish they would fix that.

For now ive been tweaking with my 800's then ill swap ram again and test with the 1066 more...My Dominators are only good for about 1130/1150mhz stable....I shouldnt sold my 9600's bummer....they were 1200mhz.
Wish DDR3 worked hahaa.

I believe thats another bug..Ive read where a 1000watt PSU was readig the same..I did a google on Volt readings for the dang thing and others have same problem hahaaa,,Asus has lots Bios work to do.Still not bad for the BIOS it is only the second release. Maybe third will be a Luckycharm.

Im only runing 11x 120fans and some other stuff not to mention 2pumps 1 vidcard and 1 for CPU:rofl:

Ok My best so far @3.52ghz...

Well with under 1.5volts i can do 3450mhz//2500mhz

But this is where im @ ATm

Note:
PCI-E set @ 100,,
when i set 101 for PCi-E it will lock up @ 224/225 and 234/235 FSB with any Dividers used...So it seems the extra 1mhz adds up when the HTT goes above 223..making things go nuts when sertain FSB/HTT numbers are used...

Results with 2gigs Ganged ,,Patriot Viper 9600's 1200mhz sticks 2x1gigs...
Using default timing is faster than running 5-5-5-12...Ive tried with 280+ which only gets me to about 1140mhz...well worth the $78bucks...My Dominators error on this Mobo above 1100mhz..Vipers9600's 100% stable @2.3volts

They dont work good on Intel 680I's but they work great with AMD rigs and 790fx/sb750...i talked to Patriot rep and verified if they work for this Mobo..He said the Green ones work the same as the Black ones do for AMD..They are the same modules with differnt color heasink ,,He said the Green ones are also tweaked for compatability for intel Mobos but will work on AMD fine...

I can comfirm that the Black 9600vipers work . They even boot if you by chance clear the CMOS which my Dominators would not!

So im using the 1066 divider with HTT 219 x 16xcpu (2400NB)for my overall ATM..

@ 3520mhz is my Max with 2600nb or 2000nb..i believe this is my true Limit for CPU.. its only a week 0820:D
