I also tried increasing my 9800gt shader to 1836 which was stable on 1.09, but it's not on 1.15
so that new core must have some utilization improvements in it... I went back to 1783 and it's stable again.

I like the ppd improvement with this one: (core 1.09 vs core 1.15) I wasn't pulling the new core until I switched to console. but I didn't try deleting the core in systray first to make it dl a new one. someone should try that and see if systray will pull a new core.

thanks for testing that wfo.. could have saved myself some work. lol... shoulda just deleted the old core and restarted the client... oh well, I'm on all console clients now...

One thing about the new version of core_11 (v1.15) it will give you more ppd but it also produces more heat and if your card is maxed out on the over clocking you will most likely have to step back at least 1 step to keep it stable.

Most of the time it will, but to be safe it's always prudent to do it between wu's ( eg run -oneunit and delete the core once done so it can auto dl the new core when you get a wu which requieres that core ).

It will resume in the middle of the wu you do not need to delete the work folder if you do that it can not resume it will have to start a new wu and you will loose any credit for the work you had done on that wu.

What Marvin said about using the -oneunit flag to complete the current wu and then delete the core and remove the -oneunit flag is the safest way but for most small core revision you can get by with just stopping and then deleting the existing core and letting it download the new version. If its a new core not just a minor revision I think I would do the -oneunit method to be safe.

It was only around 15% so it's no big loss. I was just curious for next time.

My 8800gs is pumping ~4600ppd on project 5015 with 1700 shaders. That's about the same number. The temps are about the same. Ambient is a little higher right now so it's hard to tell.

Well my 9600GSO got the new core, went from about 4900 PPD on 5016 to 5250 for a 350 PPD increase. Not bad for just downloading a new core :)
Will do this to my 8800GT next later today when I have time and it isn't halfway through a unit, I don't want to risk losing one at this point.

I could look it up if you doubt me but there been reported and confirmed cases on which a new core would not like to continue a wu in progress, 100% sure on that. There mostly isolated cases though but still I would say be prudent and be safe. If you have to choose between doing a mid wu change or having the client run overnight/weekend with an older core I'd say take the risk as the gains are usuaully big enough to warrant loosing a single wu then, but in other cases I would definetly use -oneunit.

I would agree the -oneunit flag method is safest however I had asked this exact question in the Stanford Folding@Home beta testers forum when FahCore_11(v1.13) came out and was told by one of the mods and a Pande group member that I could just stop and delete the existing core and restart the client that it should download the new core and continue where it left off. I then did that for (v1.13) and (v1.15) without any problems.

So in conclusion does it work and is it safe?
Answer yes it works most of the time however the safest method to ensure you do not loose any work would be to use the -oneunit flag let the current wu end then delete the core remove the -oneunit flag and restart the client and let it download a new wu and if a new core is needed it will download that as well.

OK I know this isn't nvidia, but I just tried deleting the core on my ATI client for my 4870, which previously would just EUE constantly. I got core 1.17 downloaded, and now so far it isn't giving out EUEs right away and at 4% it is estimating 3334 PPD and gradually increasing. Also, CPU usage is lower too, no longer using a whole core of my quad but around 2/3 to 3/4 of the core. Hmm, interesting. Might be able to run SMP and this client on my main PC now if they fixed the stability issue, that would be nice. We'll see how it plays out and whether it actually finishes a unit or not.

Confirmed also. Actually WOW. Went from 1min 17sec to 1min 9seconds. Server 2008 x64, 8800GTX, 1693Mhz Shaders.

I kinda stumbled into this new core this morning by accident playing around and converting my clients to console clients, and they dl'ed a new core as a fresh client install. I guess if I would have visited the gpu section of fah forum, and read those threads, I could have saved myself some hassle of swapping client installs and confusion.. I'm not a frequent flyer of the gpu section over there since I never have issues with the gpu client. anyway, I'll edit the op and add those threads.

Went from 5316 PPD to 5841 on my 8800gt...

everything makes A LOT more sense now...for the last 2 days the ppd were huge but my card was up 4*C...i was on my way here to tell of my awesome 5385ppd project lol

I had been using v1.13 now for a couple of weeks as a beta team core the only difference between v1.13 and v1.15 is that v1.15 should handle EUE's better that were causing the client to shutdown vs continuing on a new wu. The ppd increase is nice but like I said keep a close eye on it for a little while to make sure its stable with your overclocks since it seems to work the card a little harder and causes a little temp increase over the older v1.09 core.

I noticed a small boost on my VGA, now it needs 57 ~ 59 seconds to finish one % before it was over 65 ~ 67 seconds. As for the temps indeed it's higher a bit around 4 ~ 5 degrees but that's because the stock GTX cooling is not worth much ..

I edited the OP and title to take all that console client nonsense out. that was my goof this morning.

Min frame time when I was away was giving me ppd of 6189 ppd. Up from 54xx.

I am using an older driver than that 177.52 or some such it was the current beta Linux 64 bit driver when I setup the client about a month ago.

How long ago did you get the replacement core? FAHmon won't show the increase until several steps have gone by, it takes some time.

don't think it makes any difference. but why dont you uninstall the 177 driver and install the 178.. if anything it'll update you and maybe cycle thru a couple reboots to clear out any junk slowing it down.

Well the WU difference could be it too. For example, unit A was at 5000 ppd. new core gets it to 5300 ppd. Cool. Unit B was at 4800 ppd. Now it is at 5000 ppd. Cool again. However, since you moved from unit A to unit B, it appears that you didn't get a boost, because you went from 5000 to 5000, when you really did get a boost.. I'd check it next unit and see how things look after about 5%-10%.

I went from 6912ppd to 7450. Sometimes it says 7680 at points during the same WU. In either event, big increase. :up:

I went from 62 seconds per frame to 54.

Shut down your GPU folding client. Go into fahmon, double click on your GPU client. Delete fahcore_11, an application extension.

EDIT: Now I'm down to 7029ppd with a new WU. Hmm... I need to start paying attention to the projects.
EDIT2: Close fahmon, open it again, close, open, and it keeps going up. Is it just recalculating ppd based on frame times? I'm up to 7252 and I just posted that previous edit not 15 seconds ago.

hallelujah, ATI client core updated fixed the issues I had, now I'm doing 3300PPD from my 4870, PLUS it even gets along with SMP quite nicely, I'm still getting near 2000 PPD from it as well. So according to fahmon I'm about 15,500 PPD total :woot:

Also guys... if you can't wait for Fahmon to stabilise, leave your machine for 2 mins and comback and check latest frame times. The lowest SHOULD be what your machine is potentially capable of. When you flick around with the desktop and IE etc, it'll kill a second or two off your frame times, ergo PPD.

Slowly updating this. I'll do my folding farm in a bit. Updated my 8800gts. If it does NOT do 6000 points, I'm doing something wrong. I usually get 5780. Lets see....

these are typical max ppd I've seen on a machine that has no user interaction. of course it's not always this, but these seem to be the most common.

I clear mine all the time so old readings dont play with the numbers.

just stop fahmon and delete this file. it'll wipe the old info.

Last time I tried to bump up the shaders, the PC was crashing. I don't know why, but maybe RT? I need to use the EVGA tuner and try again.

On the 8800GT with shaders at 1728 I went from about 5100 to 5600, boost of 500. 9600GSO at 1836 shaders went from 4900 to 5300, boost of 400. Just some round numbers.

You can get the shaders higher on that 8800gt Sparks... I had them at 1783 no problem. It would do 5300ppd all day, so raising those will get you another 200ppd.

Perhaps. Heard the new core puts a little more stress on the shaders so some have had to drop clocks down a notch. I'll try upping it when I have time to monitor it and make sure nothing goes unstable.

well i got the new cores on both of my 8800gtx's and they seem to be working fine. now my question is about F@H mon what is it and were do you get it:D Google turned up no DL's maybe in just crazy.

Awesome change for "just" a core update!

Edit: the sound while folding is now several pitches higher than before. Also core temp increased by a healthy 4°C. It's nice to have a more optimised core to utilise the shaders better! :)
Edit 2: Wow, now it's 5316.9... o_0;

Times decreased from 1m14s to 1m7s on Asus 9800gt UL. No clock speed changes.

Maybe your OC will be unstable with the increased load, I just know mine isn't unstable as it seems.. :shrug:

my 8800gt/9800gt used to be stable at 1836 with core 1.09, it's not with core 1.15--- tried just for grins.
I always ran mine at 1783 anyway for stability reasons.. so no change in oc for me, but I tried 1836 just to see if I could like I did on the old core and it went eue unstable before wu finished at a paltry 60c. so it wasn't temps, it was the increased load and stock voltage causing it. they picked up about 4-500 ppd though on the new core.

NEW CORE RESPONSIBLE FOR PPD INCREASE...
1. just stop the client and delete your current fahcore_11 (old core)
2. restart the client to dl a new fahcore_11 (ver 1.15 for nvidia or 1.17 for ati) automatically.

OK, using precision tuner was able to crank up the shader clock on this 8800 GTX. As posted above, at stock shaders (1350) I was getting 4822 PPD (1:26 / frame) on project 5506. I moved shaders to 1620 before bed and it ran clean all night. Now seeing 5604 PPD (1:14 / frame).

So Rip, your comment about scale w/ shaders... I increased shader clock by 20% and saw a 16% increase in PPD. (all of this with the new core code though...)

did you delete benchmarks.dat from fahmon, and calculate by last frame only. then let it sit for about 10 minutes without touching the pc. that's strange you didn't see an increase. something else is messing with it.. loony had an issue yesterday reporting no increase, and then reported back he did have an increase a couple hrs later. so maybe he has some insight as to what he expericenced, maybe you're having the same thing happen.

I noticed one thing , i was folding and watching full HD Movie [ The newest Indy :p ] and the PPD went down so, I know it's hard to leave the PC as it is for 10 minutes but you can do it !

LOL... only 2 people commented on the ATI 1.17s. They don't work in Vista 64. There were reports that running the core in compatibility mode for XP SP2 worked. And yest it ran but my 3870s took a huge point hit. I went back to the 1.1.0 for now. It's reasons like this I always rename the old core rather than delete. ;)

OK, using precision tuner was able to crank up the shader clock on this 8800 GTX. As posted above, at stock shaders (1350) I was getting 4822 PPD (1:26 / frame) on project 5506. I moved shaders to 1620 before bed and it ran clean all night. Now seeing 5604 PPD (1:14 / frame).

So Rip, your comment about scale w/ shaders... I increased shader clock by 20% and saw a 16% increase in PPD. (all of this with the new core code though...)

:up::up: Nice. I use rivatuner myself. Any chance you can mirror my clocks? I'm on stock cooling here, with no vmods. I think we should show these GT/gts people what the X is made of man. IN fact I can go to 1728 Shader and higher ram, but 1728 is on the brink, and a little change in ambients here would screw up a WU. 1693 is where I'm safely at.

New ppd: 7680

Gain: 768
Percent increse: 10%

GTX260 CSM @ 685/1477/1175

Just gave FAH a shot again with the new tray installer (6.20) and finally, it works.
8800 Ultra at 648/1684 on XP x64 with 175.19 driver, FAHmon says 5604 PPD. Sound about right? Still on stock cooling, might install the waterblock later.
Finally those crappy lags are gone, still takes up one whole core of my CPU though :(

my 8800GT OC went from 5250PPD to 5580 right before i forced the update to 5250, and after deleting the benchmarks.dat file... 4700PPD :(

Umm weird. I'm running Vista 64, with ATI 1.17, no compatibility mode, and it seems to run just fine on my 4870 :shrug:

EDIT: Tom. Its a percentage of your OLD ppd not the NEW ppd. So yours is 768/6912*100 = 11.1%

I didn't know... I sat there and thought about it.

I ended up dividing by the new ppd. You're right though Neil... I'll take the higher percentage. :D

my 8800GTS 640 went from 4900ish to 5300ish...but i have my shaders up to 1700 and my core 660 and mems 910...i love the HR-03

Idk your stock clocks but you should leave core and ram stock, especially core it doesn't give you any benefits but it does add heat you don't need ( even if you got that great cooler :up: ) and it might even limit your shaders abit if you push the core up to :)

Also, not sure if it was my own doing or the newer core but I did loose a wu today, came home to a nicely speckeld desktop with allot of funky colors and a client on 24h pauze due to unstable machine. I had been doing some uninstalls and it could have been that I uninstalled the program which did my custom fan profile, but not my oc settings, atm that's the most likely as it's purring ahead nicely now that the fan is running abit faster :rofl:

You do know all you have to do is shutdown and then restart the client to get past the 24hour pause right Marvin? I had that happen to me the first time the other week folding beta gpu2 wu's and I had not seen that before and thought that really bites a beta tester testing beta wu's which have a high failure rate being hit with a 24 hour pause due to too many EUE's.

Yeah it was up and running again after I fixed the fan profile, so definetly not the new core ( user error :am: )

I'm going to change it on my folding farm.

Got confused. It's OK, fahmon gets a little ditzy on me when I've improved stuff and its current set of calculations don't match the actual current activity.

If you change fahmon to use only the latest frame ( and you're not between 97% & 100% as those frame's tend to get a lil speed boost on their own in my experience ) it should work from the get go.

The new client has yet to affect my 9600gso's. I'm getting the exactly same ppd (5057.56) as before.

Is this core targeted towards better GPUs?
