what happens when you leave the pc alone for a year+ (56k warning)

So it was time to take Lee Kwid apart ... RIP dirty one :(

I am not by any means proud of the pics you are about to see, but you guys helped me out from the start, its only fair that you get to see how it ended.

The pc ran 24/7 for a little over one year (non stop). The original mix was distilled water + pentosin + 3 drops of pt nuke. I have to say that on the first months I wanted to leave it alone, was sort of affraid to mess things up and was happy it was working well. In the last few months I could care less about the pc. As long as it was still running I had much bigger things to worry about. I just hoped for it to last until I was ready to build a new machine and go back to air. And so it ran untouched...until today.

btw during this time:
- I only re-filled with distilled water when the level was too low;
- My res used to stay open because of some issues I had with my drain port (stupid but true);
- I never fully drained the system to replace fluid, I never added more Pentosin nor PT nuke to the loop;
- The side panel was open for the last 4 months because of a problem with the dominator fans being hooked behind the mobo;
- Temps were actually fine...not as good as they used to be of course, but it never really bugged me;
- Yes I do have a cat;
- I live in a (very) warm country, can't keep the windows closed and during this year two huge commercial buildings were constructed next to my house;

dont worry about submerging them.

Thats how i clean the fans out.

Also the radiator. i take a garden hose and use pressurized water to blast all the fur away from the fins and allow the fans and rad to bake out in the sun to dry.

if i need to pick between my dog and dust, my dog will always win. :rofl:

So i learned a few tricks to make maintence easier.

Your water / res is in a lot better condition than mine is - I am using just de-ionised water and PT Nuke yet after only a short while I get white powerery stains on everything which has to be physically removed. :(

thanks NaeKuh, appreciate the suggestions. I got rid of the dust and cleaned the rad but still need to soak the fins, hopefully tomorrow will be sunny too..

You are not saying that you wash the fans without even taking them apart are you? sorry.. I am that clueless..

Thanks for posting the great photos. The dusty rads really show the fan "dead spot" very well.

That’s actually the most disgusting thing I’ve seen come computers, I mean, seriously; it made me feel sick. I was doing kind of ok until that extreme close up shot on the rad appeared on my screen…yuck.:sick:

Ive got 3 cats, They are completely banned from my computer room since I have cleaned everything out. Mine after 6 months looked nowhere near as bad as that tho, wow!

that was not as bad as I expected! And the McRes is still in good shape, stained maybe, but no micro cracks.

I clean fans my fans using a wet/damp cloth and then to dry them turn the oven on to the lowest setting and put them in there for 10-20minutes.

Tygons seem to turn Yellow/green in hot ambient conditions, My total of 30feet of Tygons turned Yellow, due to hot weather at my location, So I finally moved to R3400 black tygons :D.

use baby wipes to clean fans easy.

radiator, a nice shower of water thru the fins then let sun dry.

The real reason to upgrade regularly revealed:
it will never look like the pics in the first post.:p:

Its about timing saving dinos. 10 min with a brush vs 15 sec on a shaking. :rofl:

Take a shallow Pyrex glass serving dish. Put all your blocks (minus all rubber gaskets and seals) in the dish and your MCRES reservoir outside the dish. Place everything in the upper compartment of your dishwasher. Remove all kitchen utensils from the dishwasher. Run it on anti-bacterial pot scrubber super cycle. Make sure you have Jet Dry.

Finish your blocks with tomato ketchp, or Brazilian hot sauce, to polish.

Take your tubing. Use a straightened out wire hanger with a small loop at the end. Cut a small piece of cotton towel. Run through your tube. Place tube in dishwasher as well. Tygon won't melt.

Take bare radiator outside. Spray the crap out of it with a pressurized garden hose. Shake it dry very well. Make sure you sun dry it well. Thermochills do rust if left damp for too long.

Like Naekuh said, dunk your fans for half a second in water and shake them them dry. Leave them in the hot sun. Like Septim said, the best way to remove dust from your fans and case and pretty much everything else is baby wipes. Take it from us fathers DO NOT use baby wipes on anything acrylic, naturally, because its an alcohol based product.

Since you are going through the trouble, I would strip the case down and vacuum it as well.

don't own a dishwasher, so will have to scrub the blocks manually...no big deal tho. I trashed the tubbing already, having to replace them once a year is not that bad, besides I don't think I would use 3603 again.

Everything else sounds like a perfect plan, only problem is a bunch of clouds...no sun today.. :soap:

This makes me glad for my black friday $40 2 gallon compressor. It makes it so easy to blow out the dust. I always add a drop of algaecide when I top off with distilled just for good measure. Those pics just give me the creeps.

it's easier for me to use a toothbrush every six months and not have to take the fan off the rad than do what you suggest :D

i place a vacuum cleaner in one hand and also stop the rad from spinning/moving while lightly brushing the fan so that the vacuum cleaner fan pick it up...quick job for me and then just stick the small nozzle in through the fan gaps and get some dust from the rad and it's all good mate :D hehehe

i dont really care anyways about OCing my main rig as i run a celeron in there :rofl: all i had lying around at the time and now i'm too lazy to take the block off and inject something more substantial...like say an E8400 or heheh

will do on the next run...i guess it'll get dustier now that summer is coming :rolleyes:

my intake air filters are like that during once a month cleaning... air filters/aluminum mosquito screen, use simple brush stroke down to waiting paper/tissue then fold and throw away to avoid spreading dirt again...

IanY i hear ya about the baby wipes and acrylic, i mostly use them on fans and keyboards and monitors (i hope monitors are ok)...

Compressed air is great on fans, and it can get expensive with so many fans lol

Septim, I use baby wipes to clean cpu/NB/gpu dies as well

I use a vacuum with a crevice tool to pull the cat fur from my rads, I just go opposite fan flow. Then I give them a good cleaning.

I didn't know there were Furmochill radiators on the market :confused::rofl::ROTF:

Heh, i once had to work on a 5 year old computer that had been running 24/7 in a high school that actually looked worse than that. It looked like someone fed the cat into a woodchipper. Having 2 cats of my own, this is why i use filters. It takes less than a day to completely clog up the filters at the front, luckily i can just scrape the cathair off. Vaccuum out the filters every week or so and things stay nice and clean inside.

This will happen to any pc that is left uncleaned for over a year, no matter how clean your house is and as far as there are pets in the house. Make sure you put some filters on those fans and rad, to save you some stress during your next pc maintance.

Never had a problem with any fan, infact i do that even to my BIG AC fans thats are proped on my window

Well the sun decided to show up so I spent the last few hours cleaning everything up ...and I just wanted to say that CLEANING FANS WITH A BUCKET IS NOT ONLY FUN BUT DAMN IS IT FAST! :ROTF: :ROTF:

I have learnt a new trick on how to clean out my fans.
Nice job on your fans, they look like they have never been used, or did the postman drop the off?

and I am not nearly as brave as your brother, they stayed in the sun all day long.. I was about to put everything back into the case but ran into a small problem with the new vga cooler and the old cooper ramsinks... so the card is currently in the freezer, once I get the sinks out I can hopefully hook everything back up (- water cooling)

its been a looong day... everything is as clean as it gets... I finished hooking it all back up, sorted the cables a bit...pluged it back in...........and.....well......it still works...BUT... the fan on the PSU will not spin :soap:

the PSU is a silverstone strider 600w.. I tried to just vacuum it but the dust was all sticky and it wouldn't even move. So I removed the grill and the top cover from the PSU and vacuumed inside(carefully). Then I used some 99% alcohol and some baby wipes on the fan blades, and closed it back up. and yet somehow the fan died. :confused:


Questions.. is it possible that I have just unplugged the fan? I thought PSU fans were soldered? (I didn't even touch the wire, I just cleaned the blades)

Can I replace the fan with a Yate? and is it possible to do that without having to solder it? I don't know how to solder, but would hate to lose a psu because of a lousy fan :(

Some psu fan aren´t soldered, they come with the regular 3 pin plug. You can easily swap then, but check if you partially pluged it while cleaning.

Can the PSU be jump started?

Make sure its not the mobo that is accidentally shorted.

Make sure you have the right case plug in the right mobo pins. The cables to the ATX connector are secure? 4 pin connector?

yes, change the psu fan to a slow or medium yate or even the LED lighted yate to make it look cool/cooler... also check those connections inside the PSU, follow the fan wires, some PSU even have external wiring to connect to mobo header......

Wow and I thought I had a dust problem :D

IanY, the PSU still works, the PC will boot just fine, everything else is working, only thing that won't work is the PSU fan :(

I just opened it up... no such luck

as you guys can see from all the remaining dust, I didn't even go near it. I have no idea on how to fix this, there is no opening on the PSU case that I could use to route the yate wiring to the mobo. I could:

a) try to drill a small hole on the side of the PSU case

b) try to solder it, even tho I have never done soldering on wires before

Well since your psu warranty is void anyway I would drill a small hole and lead the wires to the mobo then :)

Not a good idea to dip the PSU into water to get the dust off the fan... sorry... just some corny humor... sorry to joke in a time like this.

Whatever you do, make sure you let the PSU discharge a full 24 hours before attempting to solder anything.

I can't tell you what to do. You are you, and I am I. I know I would run down to the computer store and buy myself another PSU. Soldering wires in a PSU.... errr... I like my house very much... I like my life even more :)

Yeah I hear you IanY. Just so disappointing to see the PSU still working and having to replace it because of a 5 bucks fan. I honestly could care less about having to drill the case but I am definitely worried about the dangers of this.

Would the PSU still shut down if overheated, and basically have all the protections it used to? the pc will run 24/7 so if any protections are lost, I will just chuck the psu in the trash..

Don't throw the PSU away !! Good for bleeding the system. Good for testing fans.

void warranty, change PSU cover to clear acrylic, drill some holes for wiring, get a LED yate, add some bling to your pc...

else like Iany said it, still good for testing other stuffs...

hehe sorry, I was frustrated when posting and couldn't pick a better new home for it....but yeah, it could still be handy.

I found a reasonable deal on a Corsair 620, will be ordering one tomorrow morning.

just placed the order on the corsair, should be here friday morning :)

was planning to use the yates on the TRU but forgot about the closed corners and was too lazzy to cut them down.. So went with the only new fan I had left.. temps are actually decent, and this pc doesn't see heavy loads anyway so I kept the fans to a minimum.

Next time I upgrade/change something on this case, I want to finally add some holes to the mobo tray, and try to get better at cable management, but its good enough for now...
