Is this going to be a serious blow to overclocking?
I have 2 kits of ddr3 performance ram. 2x1gb ddr3-1600 OCZ Flex XLC and 2x2gb ddr3-1600 G.Skill HZ. Either kit will post and run fine with 1.5v. I think performance ram damaging anything is a non-issue. Tighter timings at lower mhz is fine with me if those are indeed going to be the circumstances. In fact it'll be nice being able to run less expensive kits and keep the high end stuff for my yorkies. However it remains to be seen if this is going to effect cpu overclocks. Everything I read from DrWho seems to indicate it will not.

No more than 1.65v Vdimm for me .
So now we just need good clocking low voltage DDR3 sticks.
I think it's just part and parcel of having an IMC. I know a few guys who've burnt out Phenom X4's because they used too much vDIMM, so it honestly doesn't surprise me that there are limitations with Nehalem. I'm personally not much of a memory overclocker, so I'll be happy with some 1333 sticks that have nice timings and low voltage.

What I want to know is how much of a safety margin that 1.65v is. I bet you won't be frying your CPU until you reach 1.75-1.8v...
Lets see what the performance is before it overclocks before we get nervous.

It is a team work, body can actually claim being the lead except a guy that you almost never hear about ... the General manager ... :) Intel expose the technolgy leaders, but rarely expose the Master planner behind it. That's officially the end of DDR3-2000. I used a few Diablo 2000 4GB kits in the last few high end builds I did for customers, and these things ain't moving below 1,9V - after all, these are Micron :rolleyes:
More like 2V anyways...
They are the only 2GB sticks I know of that can do DDR3-2000 8-7-6, so it's gonna be "have fun at stock 1600" for Nehalem. Let's hope that the on-die IMC and tri-channel can really eliminate the need for high mem clocks :shakes:

I think any recommended voltages that are set will be quite conservative. Think of kents and yorks, intel chipsets too. Sure there are recommended voltages and top limits but there are not dead chips lying around everywhere from these being passed either.

I'm not comparing it to Phenom, I'm just saying that both have IMC's (different IMCs, but both IMC's none the less), and both have problems where using too much vDIMM can burn out the CPU, so initally, at least, it looks like it's a down-side of having an IMC, which in my opinion is hugely out-weighed by all the advantages of an IMC :p:Quote:
