Asus M3A79-T Deluxe

I played AMD M/B after a few years interval.
It seems to be very stable and good M/B.
It is a pity that this CPU is unsuitable for LN2.
BIOS was simple and easily-handled.:)

I think one was able to use LN2 on a phenom but it was only -20C

For many it seems to. For me (on the non-deluxe version) I didn't see any real difference. There was a thread a while back about it and people were reporting increases of 100-300 MHz.

Just curious Particle, did you try the new "0306" bios on the M3A78-T, and did it help with OC'ing your 9850?

I sold mine... I know it was a knee-jerk reaction but a friend wanted the board and I was a little PO'd that they rushed it to market with a poor Bios (0204) that didn't seem to support ACC... :(

What a poor review, it really doesn't do the mobo justice, its clear that the reviewer has no idea what they are doing IMO, or at least hasn't bothered to spend the time to work out any issues.

Makes no mention of the system components used to review the mobo, like HDD (SATA/IDE/AHCI/RAID etc). Their attempt at OC'ng was nothing more than amateurish, they said they couldn't get AOD to OC using the multiplier, though they were using the provided AOD v.2.1.2 not the latest v.2.1.3 and then they failed to even try to OC via the multi in the BIOS, and the reviewer infers that the BIOS only allows OC'ng via the HTT ref clock, making no mention of being able to OC via the multi, and they didn't even manage to enable ACC, they mnake no mention of what BIOS version they are using or any available BIOS settings.

Honestly how do these people ever get reviews published on a site with a name like Trusted Reviews, there is much more trustworthy information avialable here in the forums. This is the second review of a mobo done on that site by 2 different reviewers and both have been equally as poor, the 1st being the M3A78-T now this one for the M3A79-T

All the info they provided can easily be gotten from reading the product description on the box, the review is a total waste of space IMO....

Yes, I tried the 0304 BIOS with my 9850. I think ACC was actually working in that release as it behaved differently, but I didn't find a good combo of settings before giving up. I was unable to reap any benefits. It's not a bad board other than that though. I put it in my HTPC.

I didn't have any problems with OC from BIOS. Everything works fine. There is opportunity to change multi and ACC from BIOS level.

Mine went down to -35°C and had no issues booting. It's really a cpu/mobo combination :(

I keep seeing screenshots of the M3A79 and its brown like this one or its jet black. Seeing the difference in user reviews, online shops and ASUS's website. Weird.

Yes I'ver noticed the same thing as well....

I'm hoping to get a black one myself when they do finally become available, the PCB color is actually quite improtant to me, its one of the reasons (well other than the stupid price) that I havn't gone for the Foxconn mobo I really don't like the red pcb used by Foxconn....

I was in the same dilema. I really don't like the brown and I'm picky about the color of my components in my system. I canceled my order on newegg cause I'm waiting to see if the PCB is Brown or Black, and for the 125w 9950's. I'd also like to see what DFI has to offer but I really hope that it has a black PCB. My P5Q-Deluxe had a blackish PCB but when light shined on it it did look brownish but
not as brown as my P5E-VM HDMI.

You guys are not alone... brown PCB is hideous and I hate it with a passion. I have no idea why even Asus bothers to make them look like crap when people buy cases with side windows. I ordered mine from the Egg today and should get it tomorrow with overnight shipping... I'm really hoping it's not brown. I'll let you guys know.

I just purchased mine as well, I will let people know. I dont have a side window on my case (CM690) so I am not too worried either way, but something about jet black PCB is great ;)

Well availability dates here in the UK for the M3A79-T have been pushed back yet again, it was 4th September, then 23rd September, now its 29th September.... I'm starting to wonder if we'll ever get them here at all... !!!

I don't know whats going on with the constantly changing dates, and why availability is so poor, I'm getting really fed up of waiting now though, so I;ve decided to spend my money on a 9950BE instead...!!!

I'll have to get a mobo at some later time now, I've gotten fed up of waiting and waiting and waiting, I've been keeping the money for this mobo since beginniong of August, and its just sitting doing nothing, the availability date keeps on moving one week at a time, so I've been sitting on the money expecting them to becoe available, but enough is enough.....!!!!

That sucks... What I do for my friends in the UK is to buy for them and then ship over. It's worth it for small components like CPU and RAM but it'll end up a bit expensive for heavier items. Of course I mean shipping with tracking and insurance otherwise it's pretty reasonable.

Yeah, me too, and I was also coming over to the UK every couple of weeks until the early summer, so I coulda brought it over. Int'l travel drained me, had to hang it up. 5 years, 1.9 million miles. Ugh :down:

I like the BLK PCB and am interseted in this one very much ..It will officially replace my TA770 for the 9950 ,, although i will grab a Biostar GX3 for my 9600BE HTPC build...

Its not brown. Its a jet black PCB with brown traces. Some of us like brown ;)

Also I noticed that too. I was messing with the ram and it would not post. That nice green RESET button on the mobo did nothing but restart the thing but did not seem to clear the BIOS. I had to go the old fashion jumper route.

every time I had a failed POST it would send me to the BIOS upon reboot with the default BIOS, no CMOS jumping needed

I got a brown one.. I don't really care as so far the thing is running pretty tight!!! Temps are good, board is quiet, It likes my 9850 so far. 3.1 on stock volts. Haven't put the 9950 in it yet.

I wish all the motherboard manufacturers would just use black. It is much easier to read white lettering on a black motherboard. I have had boards in which the only way I could read some of the small lettering for the jumpers was by taking it outside in direct sunlight, and holding it at an angle to reflect off the small lettering.

I think all motherboard design engineers should be required to personally install their creations in a case from start to finish. I will bet layouts and location of connectors, etc would improve dramatically. :yepp:

I've just ordered this board and just wanted to know if there are any waterblocks that fit the nb/sb and mosfets.
Also wanted to know if watercooling the chipset is even worth it.
Like if the PWM's and NB temps get really hot like on the DFI's.

I doubt that you need to watercool anything than the cpu.

FYI. I can touch the PWM heat sink. It feels like 50-60 degree C.
Running CPU at 1.52V at the moment.

Taadaam! Here you can see "ASUS's 8+2 Power Design". 10 phases? I don't think so ;). In my opinion looks like 5 phases with two chokes on phase.

Well I see 2 ranks of 10 mosfets = 20

20 / 2 = 10 = 8 + 2

Is that wrong...???

You can also see these 20 vrms in 5 groups. 4 vrms + 2 chokes on each group.

2 per choke = 10 i.e. 8 + 2 thats how I see it anyway...

I can see the grouping that you refer to, but that doesn't mean that they are grouped like that as part of a pattern that demonstrates their application, the circuit path taken on the PCB is what will determine the routing and therefore the applcaiotn of the modules, they could be grouped like that purely for space reasons, or for placing of heatsinks etc...

Maybe somone else can chip in with their thoughts as well...

But for now my thinking is that it is in fact 8 + 2 phase...

I'm gonna do that for sure. Especially the PWM section, its pretty hot, and it gets really hot in my room from all these incremental heaters that I have.

I'm gonna use the Koolance universal with the plates. Looks like their 107mm will fit perfectly. I'll probably do the NB also, but use an enzotech copper heatsink for the SB, as it doesn't get that hot. For the NB, I had some danger den and zalman water blocks sitting around not getting used. The NB and SB are standard 52mm mounting, so just about everything will fit it. The FETs use a "standard" Asus config, but I'm not sure if any of the Asus specific blocks from EK, etc., will fit as the board is too new. The koolance is a much better approach anyway. I hate buying water blocks that only fit one thing. Way too expensive for those of us who upgrade every few months!!! :)

A TON of heat comes from the PWM section, which is just like the DFI. Also the same thing with the 4850s that I have in tri Crossfire. I'm actually thinking of switching to 4870s because they don't seem to produce as much heat in the power section judging by the look of the coolers, which don't have a sink on the FETs like the 4850s do.

Also gonna get a Zalman 850W PS to cool down and *quiet* down my rig. Using a Thermaltake toughpower 750 now and when it spins up to around 400 watts, I feel like I'm sitting on the wing of an ATR-72 turboprop.

The PWM cooler is very cool for me, just barely above body temperature. The NB is pretty hot but not hot enough I would have to pull my hand off of it, I can leave my fingers on it comfortably. SB somewhere in between the two.

WOW thanks a lot you have really done your research.:up:
The problem with most of the newer AMD boards is trying to find a mosfet block and the koolance (not my top choice for WC) one seems to be quiet flexible.
All I need to do now is to find a NB block that accepts BP 1/2"ID 3/4"OD compression fittings.

I just bought this board from the egg and the PCB is black but the traces are brown. It will stay in the box until the 125 watt 9950 hits. Hopefully by the time I make it home, really, really, soon! :)

Can you use any pci-e slot for x16 or for crossfire any 2 slots that are the same color with this board

It so not fair ..... all you guys with the mobos sitting in the box waiting, and I'm still stuck waiting for them to become available here in the UK.....!!!

The blues are dedicated x16, the blacks run at x8 max. The blues throttle to x8 when you have 3 or more cards installed in order of installation (in other words, slot 1 goes to x8 when a card is installed in slot 2, its partner, but slot 3 stays at x16) I run 3 4850s in tri crossfire, and thats how the board sets itself up.

But it doesn't matter as far as we can all tell. x8 @ PCIe 2.0 has GOBs of bandwidth, so no issues. It seems that with the exception of the monster 4870X2, X8 or x16 simply doesn't matter.

For once, I'm gonna be an optimist on this stuff actually working :D:up:

Not sure if there's much of a problem with the actual board. I was a victim of the first M3A32-MVP and it simply sucked big time.... I was traumatized on Asus, so when the M3A79 came out, I was VERY reluctant, but I figured I'd try it anyway. All I can say is...WOW... very solid

I've seen many of the things people are complaining about, and there are some legitimate things there (due to the first BIOS version I'm sure), but many of the complaints are folks who are either impatient or simply not experienced enough with the AMD Phenom way of doing things (not like us diehard lunatics at least)

The firmware definitely feels solid, but there are some improvements that can be made. ACC is definitely working (I can get 3.6Ghz on a 9850 that would only do 2.9 before) and I'm have NO random crashing. Also, RAID issues that people are complaining about has NOTHING to do with Asus implementation, but rather it is an AMD chipset/Promise technology problem with how the firmware is configured (it was the same on the SB700). Any SB700/SB750 board has the same issues, (trust me on that, I have 4 SB700s running in the house, all running RAID/SATA, and its ugly to get it going)

Other than that, I must say I am amazed at how tight the board feels. Its my first "high end" Asus since the original A8V that hasn't pissed me off ;)

That's a pretty awesome overclock a 9850. I wonder how much you could push out of a 9950 or even a 125w 9950 when they come out.

What kind of cooling are you running, and what is the cpu voltage?

I apologize in advance if your cooling setup air or water is in your sig as it's early in the morning, I haven't slept and I'm too lazy to check. :D

Thanks for the links, I've been watching all 3 of those sites (as well as one or 2 others), waiting for availability, they all have it listed, but not one of them has had stock available since they first listed them....

I've been checking on a daily basis since they first listed the mobo, and on the ones that have it, I filled in the "e-mail me when available" option as well..

Some of them have availability dates as well, but since the mobo's were first listed the dates have changed all the time, first of all it was 4th Sep, then 23 Sep, the latest is 29th Sep, though who knows if it'll change again....!!!

Thanks for replying though...LOL, I was just having a jokey moan, about the guys who have the mobos sitting in a box....:D:D

Yeah... It is a pretty good overclock. It runs great until I try to save a screenshot with the snipping tool so I can post it here. I'm working on the problem. Voltage is 1.45-1.5, but AOD ends at 1.45 so I'm trying to work on measurement via BIOS, CPUz or Everest, and still keep AOD functioning.

I have a 9950 in my existing together gamer, but I'm in the process of dismantling it and will move that CPU over to the M3A79.

Cooling is on water for the moment with the 9850, but only a 1/4" (6mm) system. My main system is a 1/2" system with manifolds, so that should reduce temps substantially, when I transplant it.

I have the poopy brown color, but I don't care actually. I want SPEED, aesthetics means nothing to me because I'm shallow and crass :ROTF:

This is the best one where the snipping tool cooperates!

AMD chipset drivers cause my system to hang during shutdown... Event viewer is clean with no error message. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

@ nanohead in the overdrive folder change the maximum vcore setting to 1 in the preferences xml.
This should give u 1.55 max.
It worked for me.

Be careful but because aod seems to add voltage when u up the voltage if u are not in 1.3v from bios (original setting in aod).

Thanks leoy.... I tried, but cannot open the file (or there isn't anything in it :shrug:) I can open pagesettings.xml, but no preference.xml ?


EDIT: I figured it out. Turns out that because AOD kept crashing, it never successfully wrote the files contents. I started it, hit apply on the preference page, the shut it down (all at stock speeds to prevent crashing) and it created the contents, and I then made the change and it now shows 1.5V... thanks!!!

Well, I experimented tonight with RAID 5 on the M3A79-T, and results were somewhat mixed.

Disk performance was actually pretty decent. I did a 2+1 array, with 3 old seagate 80GB SATA 1 drives. I hit 90MB/sec transfer on HD Tune, which is actually pretty good for those old drives. I need to get 3 or 4 SATA II drives to run this. Also, I want to test the behavior of the SB750 with a RAID 5 HD disk array and a standalone SATA CD drive. This could be the wrench in the works for using RAID on this board without it being a pain in the arse

On the downside, Overclocking was MUCH flakier, which is what I was gonna look for. 3.6 was attainable, but MUCH more crash prone, and getting there was not a sure thing. So there is some weirdness with the RAID filter driver and how sensitive Vista is to hairy clock rates.

Also, AOD is a horrible as ever. On the single Raptor installation I did initially, version 2.13 installed with the black skin and worked pretty well, and it showed ACC as being set to auto. When I installed the exact same version on the RAID 5 install, it installed the red skin and worked poorly, as well as not showing ACC even existing. :shrug:

Its truly a strange piece of software. I took leoy's advice about hacking the preference.xml file, and on the single Raptor install, it worked great. On the RAID 5 install, it keeps resetting itself randomly, as well as occasionally deleting itself.

What a train wreck...

Yes I think in the AOD thread, there's mention that RAID stops AOD from detecting the SB750 for some reason with AOD v2.13 and that the next release of AOD should fix this, I'm hoping that it'll come out before I geta M3A79-T mobo..... hopefully in the next couple of weeks though seems availability is still an issue here in the UK.... latest availability date seems to have been pushed back yet again to 6th Oct now, its forever changing, first it was 4th Sep, then 23rd Sep then 39th Sep, then 30th Sep, latest is 6th Oct.... its ridiculous...!!!

I'm looking into ordering from Germany now....!!!

I can confirm this, I have 2.14 and AHCI and ACC works and the skin is black.

Grats Nanohead gald to see you found your self a SB750 chip mother board you like . On my Foxconn board the ACC didnt work right with AOD 2.13 but dose work with 2.14 just like Oldpueblo said .On my old DFI board using raid and not using, i saw that my rig was able to over clock better using a single drive as to the raid set-up . I was thinking that maybe the power draw on the mother board from running the raid set-up makes it harder to keep the cpu stable , Do you think that could be happen to you ? I was thinking that it may be a problem for all the AMD boards with the high power draw from a over clock Phenom cpu . Your ASUS board dose look to have the best power set-up out of all the new board out there right now .

Just received this board today so far I'm happy with the OC results got 2.9GHz so far @1.45v NB and CPU.
That 200mhz more than my DFI so far and I think with a little tweaking i can get it to 3Ghz.

I'm also wonder if your boards overvolts your voltage settings that you set in the BIOS?
For example I put 1.45v in the BIOS and overdrive says that its at 1.45v while HWmonitor and CPU-Z says its at 1.488v.
Anybody know where to check vcore with a DMM on this board?

I don't have this board, but I would suggest that you might get better results by lowering your V's a little bit until you find what's best, especially the IMC volts. Just a suggestion, work your way up... :D

you should have no problems with 3ghz. I run 3.2 at 1.37v cpu and nb. I noticed that cpu-z will move the core voltage on me in windows, when I was testing at 1.45 it would jump between 1.456 to 1.479 and go back and forth

Yeah been busy since school started...

Anyways thanks for the tips but i've already tried that 3ghz its a no go on anything lower than 1.4v even at that is crashes shortly after boot up.
I'll try lowering the IMC if my current overclock is unstable and see where that takes me.

Right now I'm testing 1.5v on the CPU @ 3Ghz and 1.45v on the IMC @ 2.2ghz.
*fingers crossed* hopefully its stable... so far 15mins and counting.

Update: Seems like it was the IMC that was holding my OC back running it at stock speeds now and CPU at 3Ghz with 1.45v

Hey, did you set ACC to auto per chance? I can let you know what my BIOS settings are that got me that great 3.6 clock. I'm gonna start transplanting tomorrow so the 9950 will go in at some point. Still have to work out the whole disk configuration, cuz Asus farged up the RAID/IDE/SATA config in BIOS.....

Yeah ACC is set to auto in the BIOS I think that my chip is just a bad clocker.
I had a 9850 that could do 2.9 on a sb600 before it died.
This is actually my third 9850 lol.

Why you set AUTO? Try to find optimal value. It's different for every CPU.

Take a photo of the violtage regulator chip. Figure out what chip it is ISL or ST google for the chip and normaly you'll get the specs. Then look out for a pin called Vsen and try to follow the circuit path to the next soldered joint. Measure there. :)
If you can not follow the ciruit path simply try a few points around the Vsen pin.

Sitiin on the ASRock AOD790GX since a few days. It's sensor chip reports up to 0.1V higher voltage than the DMM.

I'd be interested how much voltage that board can handle the GBT790GX handled up to 1.725V fine at 3.3GHz, on the ASRock I primed for a few hours at 1.65V. Temps where still close to 60°C on water.

JUst a word of caution to folks in the UK who are looking to buy a 125W Phenom 9950BE....

I've been looking around for one to pair with the M3A79-T, and it seems that a lot of UK retailers are mistakenly lising, the 140W Phenom using the HD995ZXAGHBOX part #, and not the HD995ZFAGHBOX Part #.

The ZX is supposed to be the 125W 9950BE and the ZF the original 140W 9950BE, but so far a few retailers that list the ZX part # are actually selling the 140W 9950BE, I almost placed an order for one when I found a retailer with stock, but at the last second noticed that it was am original 140W 9950.

I have the ASUS M3A79-T mobo and have been waiting for the 125 watt 9950 BE. However, the ASUS cpu listing does not list the 125 watt version. It lists "Phenom X4 995Z (HD995ZXAJ4BGH),2.6GHz,140W,rev.B3,SocketAM2+,Quad-Core". It clearly states 140 watt. :confused:

As a result, I thought we would have to wait for a new bios version to accommodate the 125 watt 9950. BTW, from what I can find this cpu will not be available until tomorrow, Sept. 26. You can backorder from Zoomfly and others, but I don't think it will ship until tomorrow

How did you go about doing this? I found that Auto gave me the most consistent overclocks so far. Did you do it by core? or the whole CPU itself

I found my 3.4ghz OC would not even post with ACC set to auto but setting it manually made it all the way into windows.

To find out what core needs how much ACC I like to set a OC that I know will boot into windows but will fail p95 within a couple minutes. This is usually always a single core. set that core to 2% then start OCing till you can't make it into windows. At that point I add one notch to every core, this resulted in the max OC I could get at a given voltage.

2%/2%/4%/2% is what my ACC is set to

I think every board I have OCed with did that. Then again I have only used ASUS for my performance boards, maybe they do something in some way to cause it. Hard to really know what you are sending out w/o a volt meter anyways :D

This board is just freakin awesome... Nothing else need be said.

This was a casual run, I'm starting the transplant to a proper water cooling system tomorrow. But it made it through 3DMark06 with no problem. This run was with 2 x 4870s. I'm gonna try the same with my 3 x 4850 machine and see what happens.

Just amazing to see a Phenom based system doing this..........

FYI, this looks like the fastest Phenom score in Futuremark!!!! Zowee

Update: Well I found out that my 2nd core was the weak one but it was still unstable at 2%/4%/2%/2% so I upped it to 2%/6%/2%/2% stress testing to see how it goes now.
