DFI SB750 boards, more scuttlebut.. NOW WITH DFI LINKS

OK, just got some more info from Motherboard Pro (these guys are the only ones who seem to be able to tame DFI :) )

They confirmed for me that the LP JR 790GX-M2RS only supports the 125 Watt CPUs. This info came from DFI today. Many of us were wondering what kind of CPU load it would take, and we were looking at those PWM configurations and scratching our heads. Those slides in their preso said 120A (120 Amps, maybe to power a NY city subway car or something), must have meant 125W.

Also, it appears that the next gen of the 790FX board is supposed to be here soon, and as usual, DFI confuses everyone :clap:

The info claims that there will be 2 different models, just like there are now, but the model numbers make no sense, as both end with M2RS. There was a DK 790FX2-M2RS and a 790FX-M2RSB or some such nonsense. I didn't quite understand the nomenclature :shrug: It might have been some mis info from the DFI sales department or something.

So it seems that the JR is good for 9850s and new 9950s, but that we have to wait for the big mother for the 140W CPUs

120A doesn't seem odd.

When I raise my voltage to 1.45V, I pull about 170W off the +12V rail at the mosfets. That's with a 9850 at under 3GHz for some testing. With average efficiency that I'd expect from a PWM solution like that, I'd bet it's delivering ~110A to the CPU at that voltage and frequency.

110 Amps? Thats Arc Welder territory :D 110Watts is more like it!

Not really. When an OC'd CPU is pulling say 150W and at a voltage of 1.40V, it's pulling 107 amps. You don't have any power factor concerns with CPU power usage, as all power applied is DC. This falls into Ohm's Law[ish] territory.

Since Volts * Amps = Watts in such a scenario, you can use simple algebra to see that Watts / Volts = Amps. 150 / 1.4 = ~107. You ever wonder why there are so many power pins on a CPU? If a CPU that dropped 120W ran off of 1000VDC, you could probably get by with a single pair of pins for power. It isn't power that determines the wire size needed. It is the current. Drop resistance or increase voltage for any given load and you can use a wire with a lesser cross-section. In the case of a welder, your cables may need to be 30 feet long. The resistance of 30' of wire with so much current is why it's so large. If your cables only needed to be two inches long, you could get by with a MUCH smaller wire.

There's nothing shocking about the high current numbers.

I was trying to discern between the higher end variant (the UT M2R) and the more practical board (the DK M2RS). But both model numbers I heard were DK and M2RS(B), leaving me to believe at least that they were maybe NOT going to do another M2R style higher end board. Not sure if they need to, not sure if I'd buy one either.

I have the M2R and don't use the Bernstein audio, the firewire or the silly transpiper (I did, but it was always in the way and not that effective) I do use the Silicon Image RAID controller though, although I might not with the SB750.

Now I'm even MORE confused

And they both have 4+1 power, neither have pure digital 6+1 like the M2R does. Huh?

Yeah, WTF is right? That is an absurd design choice, I have NO idea what these guys are thinking :shrug:

Not only that, but they still artificially constrict the 3rd PCIe slot to a x4, so a dopey 3 way Crossfire config from an I/O bandwidth load balancing perspective too. WTF again!!!!

Looks like they've abandoned the high end for AMD :confused:, unless there's another M2R product coming, but I've not heard anything about it. What a bummer if thats the case. I'm gonna call DFI sales tomorrow in Ca and see if anyone knows anything about an M2R with the SB750. :down:

That first pic looks like a really interesting board SocketMan... :)

I'm pretty sure all of us early adopters of Phenom know how important the PWM section of the boards are. Do you have any clue as to why the power section of that board has 2 rather large IC's where the chokes would normally be?

I'm wondering if it may help steady the power/response sent to the CPU. If it does I would have to think that could be a serious help for the stability of the X4's...

I've never owned a DFI, I've read quite a bit, both good and bad, but I have to admit that design looks kind of intriguing... ;)

Thanks Boss, after a little more research, it looks like that is actually the older M2R w/sb600. Unless they used the same basic design and replaced the sb600 with the sb750 adding the lines to take advantage of ACC....

unfortunately it IS the older m2r. the first two boards are the sb600 ones..

and answer is NO, we do not have enough 790FX.. Where is the UT with sb750..

But perhaps pwm-section simply is not as imßportant for 45nm Phenom and thats why DFI does not sport such investment in the power circuitry... This whole PWM thing is expensive i think..


Nice about the new Boards is the diagnostic led even on the m2rs's....

I read the manual, and from what I can tell (which does not mean I am correct) it does indeed look like there is really only 1 board, which is the FXB series, and the heatpipe is the difference between the models. There appears to be only 1 manual for both boards.

If that is the case, then the cheapest 1 is best if you're gonna water cool everything, which I'm going to do anyway. I just hope they keep the BIOS development activity and depth like it has been, especially like it its been for the M2R. Then I'd be convinced.... right now, I'm disappointed for sure. Especially when compared to the breadth of X48 models they've done.

It looks like maybe their investment in AMD is going down, while Intel is going up. From a commercial standpoint, I can certainly understand. But its still a bummer

And BTW, that power section looks identical to the 790GX and original 790FX M2RS board, which DFI claims is only 9850 capable. What am I supposed to do with my 9950 though? I dunno :shrug:

But using crappy 4-phase power instead of digital fets is fail :( Why couldn't they just update the LT/UT with SB750? Afaik SB600/SB750 are both pin compatible so it would just be a case of drop-in replacement and some small BIOS changes?

Even when AMD chips were faster there were still more high end boards for Intel CPUs. The current performance lag for AMD chips only makes this worse. DFI could own the high end Phenom market with a good board, lets hope they decide it is worth it.

Yep, my thinking exactly. All I really care about is the power section, and rational distribution of PCIe bandwidth. I have NO idea why they do this 16/16/4 thing on the M2RS and 16/8/8 on the M2R. Makes zero sense, as the total amount of lanes in the 790FX is still 42 lanes regardless.

I hope we're not over reacting and they are gonna do a proper implementation of a better board, but I don't think so. What a bummer......

Just don't know what they're thinking is, unless the whole first gen 790FX product family taught them things we don't know :confused:

LP DK 790FXB-M2RSH: Should be available in Usa.

LP DK 790FXB-M2RS: Minimal or none yet.

LP DK 790GX-M2RS: Will not "build" until end of Sept.

LP JR 790GX-M2RS: Should be available in Usa.

No word at all on UT 790FXB motherboards.

Maybe if Deneb performance is half-decent they will consider launching UT/LT boards... but for now AMD = budget lineup :(

Was really looking forward to a new UT 790fx. I really like the expansion slot configurations compared to the asus model M3A79-T.

I think they're not doing a "UT" because is costs more to make and does not
sell as well. When there are "similar" (read identical) boards come out at the same time (like M2R and M2Rs) most people buy the m2rs and DFI needs to make money.
Also I think (many would disagree :p:) that the M2R was an overkill
in terms of the kind of power it can handle:eek:
Besides SB600 and SB750 is "pin compatible" is it not?
Who knows maybe some one can flip the SB's and mod the BIOS, and
make it XSTREME :clap::up:

I looked at the Foxconn, but it looks like the 140w 9950 snot supported, so the heck with that. At least the Asus guys have a massive power subsystem, as well as a reasonable layout. Only thing is that the Asus guys are slower than $hit when it comes to BIOS work.

That (well and typos) is the only thing I dislike about DFI.
I guess the logic is: it's better to make new mobos that people will
buy instead of updating the older ones that people have already bought. Small (relatively) company in one hand and the giant Asus on the other.Different strokes for different folks.

well of course no one knows the quality of the bios..

whatever. I think the pwm-section is of the highest importance for good oc (besides correct design of the connections to provide good signals but well most boards now are well designed that way). Biggest difference between a burning gigabyte and a rockstable m2r..

And no, i don't think m2r was overkill for phenom OC. Appears to be just right for 65nm Phenoms.. Of of the greatest part of hardware you can own with a phenom.

But perhaps 45nm will make this all obsolete. And indeed, it's a sad fact that DFI is saving money on the amd side... Another point to say AMD please do st about it!! Would have been that nice a updated m2r.

But i think its because of the short-lived AM2+ as well. AM3 for sure they will support another high-end board.. And well, till then i'll do with my stuff... will switch to 45nm when high k phenoms are out ;)

Whats interesting is that DFI was on fire with 790FX M2R updates. They did many more, and issued them more frequently, than any others. I was truly impressed. Asus does get around to it, but they are slow. I had the M3A32-MVP when the 790FX first came out, and Asus was painfully slow to correct some obvious issues. They seem to be more active on the volume boards. I also have some M2A-VMs around and those get updated all the time..still.

I certainly understand the commercial side to this, as I'm sure DFI didn't sell enough M2R boards to really get too excited about doing another version, testing and distributing it. But the M2RS approach is a little too cheesy for my taste.

Either way, I was hoping for another M2R with a SB750 to live with for the next year or so. But it was not to be.

take it simple: plan the next upgrade with am3, not before if you have a m2r.. or buy watercooling for it and push your phenom till it bleeds and/or the 45nm come out ;) this is what dfi suggests with their product policy..

that's also what I am thinking. I still have an 5000+ be and i won't go "phenom" before 45nm. Might just wait until am3 kicks in. Until then I'm replacing my asus board with some other, I don't mind stick with the sb600 as long as it has a good bios to work about. That m2r is really something, but is it just me or is it getting kinda hard to get?

It's kind of expensive for a mATX board and definitely not many PCI slots (1) and that would be definitely be covered up by a VC in the neighboring PCi-Express slot. Also not the best placement for the floppy connector but I don't put floppies in my systems anymore.

Think I'll wait for either a full ATX board or a 790FX + SB750 board from DFI. Do love DFI though.

I have all water cooling, and I did push it till blood (or sparks, whichever comes first :ROTF: )

with watercooling the new dfi's should be good also.. if you dont find any coolers, look at the link below.. there are some guys in germany (anfi-tec) that build coolers for the m2r and the m2rs, and they're looking quite good...

Not specifically fitted, but they have NB and SB blocks, plus a universal PWM FET block. I've had pretty good luck with their stuff over the years, never a real problem. But the D-Tek Fuzion CPU block is amazing, it was literally 10 degrees cooler than the Koolance CPU 300. Koolance just upgraded their CPU block again, and I guess it performs much better now.

Have you started digging around the BIOS yet? Is there anything interesting?

Yea it's the LP JR 790gx mATX.
The voltage can not be set as a number,but as a "extra Vid add" in
mVolts,with .025 increments. I added mV .200 to the stock 1.3, you can also
subtract in the same fashion. Bios does have a lot of options,an entire section
for the IGX (video).The cpu does not have the HEX,but the "common"
multiplier.CMOS reloaded comes "loaded" with the profiles:
4 in total -1 for K8 and 3 for K10.
Voltage adjustments (can set the number here) for the"
Side port
NBcore
PCIe HT
NB PCIe
something else - can't remember the board is at home and I am at work:(
Just installed the WinXP x64 late yesterday and tried the newest Kubuntu
with KDE4 (loaded as a live CD,without hard drive)

Both work,without a problem (so far;)) AOD 2.1.2 however wouldn't start -
a Windows error comes up listing something like *aut*ole32*.dll as the problem.
I did install the SP2 for the x64 but that did not solve it (yet)

Yeah, me too at this point. I was gonna use a 790GX board on my regular daily machine, but they seem to buggy, and some are way too expensive. I'm gonna get an FXB and use that as a daily machine, as its cheaper than many of the 790GX boards, with less limitations. I'm gonna use the Asus M3A79-T as my gamer.

wow thanks a lot...I was wondering the same thing when I looked at my bios...I was like...why was there just a few options....didn't know about that child-lock feature.....what bios are you using? I've updated mines to the latest beta bios they have on the site..

How good is the DFI LANPARTY DK 790FXB-M2RS? Is there a review any where? is it 140w? I like to know as you can buy this for the same price as a gigabyte 790GX board. Many thanks.

How good is the DFI LANPARTY DK 790FXB-M2RS? Is there a review any where? is it 140w? I like to know as you can buy this for the same price as a gigabyte 790GX board. Many thanks.

None of us know too much about that board yet. The 140W question is an issue for sure. The board is basically identical in many ways to the original M2RS with the SB600, but it took a while to get that 140W on the supported list, and its only 4+1. Probably with better cooling on the FETs, you would reduce the risk of a blowout. Certainly Polygon has made that method work on the cheapo Biostar with a similar power setup.

I think we are all waiting for them to show up at a vendor that we've heard of. I'll buy one when I can find one (mostly because I can't control myself)

All 4 models (The two 790FX and the two 790GX) are listed on this site for the UK http://www.wattshop.co.uk/index.php just type dfi in the search box and it will bring them up, no stock date yet. I have Emailed them and waitting for them to get back to me.

Also this site http://www.entaonline.co.uk/ again for the UK is meant to be stocking them, but its been down all day so I have not be able to check.

So would you say the heat pipe model would be the better one to get?

Becasue of all the problems I have had with the two Asus boards I have had, I will never buy Asus again, I have never had any problems with Gigabyte, but I asked them about a 790FX/SB750 chip set and they said thay are not making one at this time. Don't know about MSI.

digiconcepts has good reseller ratings. im really inching to pull the trigger and buy the board. i dont think dfi is coming out with a ut for 790fx/sb750.

edit: ah well, out of stock now.

I contacted DFI today and was told that NOVATECH and EBUYER will stock the new DFI boards very soon for the UK market.

I asked DFI about 140W and they are now testing the boards with the AMD 9950 & will give me a full report tomorrow. I will post it here when I get it. Now thats what I call a good service from DFI. :)

I had the Asus 790GX board and all it did was give me the blue screen of death. The DFI DK 790FXB boards will be around £100 in the UK, so thats a 790FX chipset with a SB750 chipset at the same price as a 790GX board. The foxcomm 790FX/SB750 board is £200 and the Asus 790FX/SB750 baord is £130, so this makes the DFI board a very good choice at a very good price.

I just lost my phenom system in a fire :( I am definitely looking at getting the FXB version of this board when i can. Not sure what CPU to get tho...may wait on a deneb now. Thanks for posting all the info's.

One minor issue: the 0 DID under the cpu feature, it should be 1, but 0 is the one that works properly.
Like the M2r it also has the "normal" multiplier for the cpu which
overrides the HEX. The NB is adjustable via HEX as well,and seems to work as it should.

The only reason why the M2Rs sold more than the M2R is because the cheaper M2Rs existed in the first place.

Many of the same people who bought the M2Rs would of coughed up for the M2R regardless of needing the extra features.

6 sata v 4 / 7 phase v 5 / digi diog are the main things that were important to me.

I fear that if there are some good clocking chip turning up that keep scaling with more Vcore that the 10 phase Asus could take the crown over the 5 phase motherboards, even in the 939 days Asus had 6 phase on the high end.

The DFI with out doubt is the best laid out boards there is & the bios is the best once you get used to it, i just hope that they don't shot there self in the foot in the long run by skimping on the phases.

Although I already ordered my 790FXB, Im still waiting for Asus to come with a ROG RD790/SB750 board. Im at least curious what they'll offer since their ROG line seems to be doing very good, but it comes with a price.

But as I said earlier, if Asus comes with a ROG RD790/SB750 board with some killer features and same sort of lay-out and color scheme as their last few (uber priced) Intel boards, Im going to buy one for sure. But the fact they only released two ROG boards for AM2+ thus far with only nVidia chipsets... It makes me worried a bit if we'll see one anyway:rolleyes:

Nonetheless I think upcoming DFI boards will be decent enough to OC Phenom. In the end, no matter how Agena B3 has improved thus far, no matter how good SB750 helps, Agena B3 hits a wall on normal cooling for 24/7 stability, so maybe those phases are thus far more than enough really.

I'm with you completely. I have the M2R (best mobo I might have ever owned, and I've owned hundreds). I would definitely have done another DFI at the high end if they did mega power, but I went for the Asus M3A79-T this time for 790FX/SB750.

No real regrets so far, but sure wish I coulda got a similar DFI. Their BIOS work on the M2R was extraordinary, they had lots of releases, communicated with their customers somewhat, and fixed things quickly. Asus is slower than snake snot

done. they had 10 left when i called. now i s'pose they have 9 left.

DFI LP DK 790FXB-M2RSH. Paid slightly more then what I wanted, but thats ok. Will sell off the UT board (i used it for no more then 2-3 months).

I thought for a day that my 790gx died -just kept giving me the C1,turns out
it's the 9850:( and not the board. I put it on the C3 suspend thern turn it back
on and noticed that Everest is reading fsb160 and some other weird values,
AOD was reading 3130 one one of the cpu cores and RAM at 666:eek:\
so anyway I press OK on the AOD (big mistake I think) then hit restart windows and that was it for the X4.:(

Ebuyer should have the new DFI motherboards listed in the next few days. DFI told me that the UK will have stock by the end of the week. So with any luck we should start seeing this board listed on Monday.

Is the Digital pwn one or a version of it going to come out? Be nice so no potential for DFI Squeeling. Also why hasn't DFI actually updated there website so it doesn't look like a 12 year old designed it?

I have the JR here since a week or so had no time to test it's oc cappabilities. I bought it because i thought it's perfect for a small powerfull desktop machine.
I mounted it in an X-Qpack2 (thanks SocketMan for mentioning it) with an Seasonic 330W PSU an 9850BE and 2x1GB GSkill 1GB 8500PK's.
I used the stock cooler because there was not enough room for the XIG with fan's (XIG works fine as a passive cooler in the same case with an GBT 780a board and an 4850e btw).
Then I installed Vista Businness 64bit and ran prime95 with everything at stock and no CnQ. Result 70° chipset temps. Ehm, I'm at stock. Not that I expected a perfectly cool chipset but 70° at stock is :censored:.

Newegg has the DFI LP DK 790FXB-M2RSH now. Expensive, way more than the original M2RS. $175... bummer, not for me. Could have another Asus 79-T for that money just about (I got in on that $165 deal a few weeks back!)

the heat pipes and the chip set.Even with an add on VGA it's still hot.
Be careful with C3 (suspend to ram) I did that ,then run AOD ,didn't change
anything just pressed OK. Then restarted and - haven't seen my 9850 since:(

I have the board on water atm and placed an 10cm 3000rpm fan on top of the pwm hsf. Tems are ~40°C now. From an uATX board i'd expect pwm temps ~50°C under load at stock.
AOD does not seem to be as stable as on the GBT790GX. It's having trouble calculating the correct cpu voltage after modifications. At least you can RMA that chip I'd say. On the 790FX an 9500 and an 9850BE died. I have not yet managed to kill a chip just by overclocking. :rolleyes:
F9 is important without not much fun. But no separate NB voltage control is not so nice. On other GX boards I was able to apply above 1.6V for the cpu and the system still was prime stable, the NB topped out around 1.55V. Of course I can overvolt the cpu by increasing the CPU VID in AOD separate but i'd like to see CPU and NB VID fields on the CPU page.
I hit the same limit on that board under water that i hit on the GBT and ASRock 790GX 9950BE@3343MHz max.

Right I'm looking for an AMD motherboard as I want to build a rig around the Phenom. I want to use a board with the SB750 and so far in the UK all I've managed to find is a Gigabyte 790GX and the Foxconn A79AS (I think thats right.)

I've used Gigabyte before but don't really fancy forking out over £100 on a Gigabyte, plus its the GX model which only has two PCI-E slots and seeing as I have been given a free 4850 I wouldn't be adverse to buying two in the future for tri crossfire. The Foxconn is the board I originally wanted to go for but its just too expensive as I'm going to have to buy a CPU to go with the board (everything else I have covered apart from a copy of windows.)

2) Memory compatibility, after having a ball ache with some OCZ and a Black Ops, is this board going to get on with the Crucial Ballistix memory I have or do I need to get some new memory?
3) I am assuming because I can't get a picture that the board layout is similar to the other DFI 790FX's and would allow for three GPU's with dual slot coolers is it the case with this model?
4) Deneb, If I wanted to go upgrade in the future to a Deneb CPU would that be possible? I'm assuming it would be as AMD seem to be really good with backwards comaptibility since the 939 incident (a 3400 939 was the last AMD CPU I ever bought.)

2) DFI boards have been picky with memory in the past, but the model you're looking at is too new to really make any judgements.
