How to flip PCB's of 9800GX2

Not quite sure if it has been done before so anyway. I ran out of M3 nuts (which i have to buy tommorrow in local hardware store) so for the photos the two PCBs are attached together by only three M3 screws. Distance between elements of both PCBs is good enough so they don't short circuit each other.

Only problem is too long bridge #1 and too short bridge #2 which gave me some issues.

I've thought about this in the past, great to see someone implement it. Should make insulating and mounting incredibly easy albeit awkward :up:

Insulation should be a piece of cake, gom. Every PCB should act as a backplate so only one layer of armaflex in between both PCB layers on the whole lenght of the card.

Let me guess... you also hopped on that awesome BFG 9800GX2 deal at compusa/tigerdirect. Mine should be coming in 2 days. I'm going to keep a close eye on your progress here, my friend... b/c I need to do this. I just can't go without water cooling with the amount of cooling power I have available and trying to keep the costs down. I'm HOPING that I can implement two Swiftech MCW60s on here, but not sure...

would the sockets out to the screen match up with the i/o plate? or would it require more space?
i assume you aren't going to bench it in a case, instead on a torture rack?

No, i'm from Europe, i bought this card in Germany, but it was the cheapest deal in Europe ~ 230€. I already have one Swiftech MCW60, gotta get another one for daily use. For now i'll cool the other side with Zalman VF900. Two swiftech's would be possible, just without the original backplates (using only screws).

If i twist the original PCI bracket plate, when it would fit, but you really have to twist it into mirrored position. Only HDMI port will be blocked. And yes, i'm gonna give it a go in - what you call it - 'torture rack' :up:

First Swiftech MCW-60 already mounted. Had to ditch the original backplate and attach the waterblock to the GPU with original M2.5 screws provided by the original cooler. Have to buy another one ASAP (via PetrasTechShop.com , they're really too expensive here in Europe).

Here's the final version, the front side is equipped with AC Accelero S1 by the time i get another Swiftech MCW-60 v2 wateblock. Both PWM's are cooled with sawed-off-in-half X1900 series PWM cooler:

No, the backside of PCB shouldn't heat up noticably at all. Here's the card with finished watercooling (i found my first ever waterblock (old about 8 years or so?)) until i get another MCW-60 v2.0. It's held down with G80 Swiftech adapter with slighty bent bolts.

Also PWM cooling is not held down with zip ties, it's much more practical and provides much greater retention force.

LOVE IT!! Nicely done and kudos for the idea. Mine was to have the PCBs at right angles, one sat flat, parallel to the mobo.

After Vgpu mod @ 1.325V it's stable (2x whole '01 loop, straight run, no optimizations, just VGA OC & LOD4.9) at 864/2268/1203, for benching a tad more.

cool mod, I honestly think this card should of taken up three slots, because the stock cooling is terrible in my opinion. Good way to get around it without forcing to go watercooling. Would love to see some nice thermalrights all over it :)

This may seem incredibly noob, but, where and how does it plug in?

Two cards are connected using a single flexible SLI adapter. From there an onboard SLI controller chip synchronizes both cards. The two cards are connected together physically, and the card housing the controller chip is connected to the motherboard using PCI-E 2.0

There is only one PCIe connector.

Well, the card did 885/1170MHz without any glitch at 13°C room temperature and yielded 119k+ 3DMark2001SE aswell as some 330k+ AM3 (note the DDR2 platform).
