At load it uses just a little more. With an extra TPC though, use the 260 number + 280 number * 0.5. It's essentially a GTX270.
And yes, it exceeds the 2900XT.
Idle power on the 260 is great, but you can underclock the 4850/4870 to 300/150 Core and lower RAM clocks too, which should make it on par. They didn't do it because you get a black flicker due to GDDR5 RAM autotraining again.

The difference is not big, but the GTX260 draws more power than the 4870, but less than the HD2900XT.

The 4870 uses 40w less at 100/200 compared to stock 2D 500/900, according to my watt meter.

How do you figure that? Theres a lot more to the core than just the TPCs, and threres a lot more to a video card than just the core. In the overall scheme, one single TPC is not going to account for a big increase in power draw (a few watts perhaps) as all the other components will remain identical to the original GTX260. To get to the halfway point between the GTX260 and GTX280 you'll need to increase the core and memory clocks as well.Quote:

Funny nobody asked.. is it gonna be 55nm or just "pre-binned" 65nm ones that were too defective to be a GTX280? I cant believe that Nvidia is still making those huge monster 65nm chips--I thought those were going to be a lot more limited production given their impractical sizes (and power consumption, plus low selling prices). Remember how limited the FX5800 cards were? And the 7800GTX 512 on 110nm?

Well I for one think this will be the 55nm version, if so it would be cool that it's not just a die shrink but also comes with improved performance. One way or the other what do we got to loose? I for one :welcome: it.

Ya I know that is the 9800gtx+ but it doesn't matter. That is just a die shrink. If they took the 8800gts 512 and gave it a die shrink and called it the 9800gtx then I don't think I could complain about that...
The whole 8800gts 512 and 9800gtx wasn't a big deal. I am a little pissed off about the whole 8800gt die shrink but you can't tell if your getting that 8800gt or not because they didn't put a + after it -_-
Clock speeds haven't changed.. which means process hasn't changed.. which means will be getting failed 280s with one non-functional TPC = new GTX260.
The reason they didn't do this from the beginning is because it would have cut deeply in the sales of the 280 if they would have kept prices the same. But with the current threat they had no choice but to take this route.
This will answer the 4870, but in no way would it compete with the 4850x2...
My guess is performance would be similar to a slightly overclocked 260.

IIRC the arch is highly modular, meaning they could produce different GPU's, instead of just making fully fledged cores and then cutting down the partially defective ones to use in lower models.
