Playing with Foxconn A79-S, Phenom 9950 and CrossFireX for G|C

Hi there,

I did not overclock AMD for a long time but preparations for Games Convention in Leipzig/Germany making me testing Phenom this week-end with CrossFireX ;)

Board is Foxconn A79-S wit 790FX chipset & SB750 Southbridge.

Bios has some room for improvements but all in all it is not that hard to overclock it so far. Maybe I will try a little cold on it to see where coldbug is.

All the pots, cards and CPUs from me for G|C - giorgio will bring at least the same amount of things and we will have a great time for sure from 21.08.-24.08. in Leipzig :toast:

All in all I have 4x HD4850 to test but no Vista yet :p:

First benches on air 3260 MHZ CPU, some issues when clocking the cards just 5 MHZ higher - I am still trying to figure out how to solve that. Core 1 & 4 are good, 2 & 3 won't pass 32m with this setting. The board allows to clock the cores separately what I am going to try right now.

I'am using the new foxconn a79a-s mother board also .I got my rig up and running a couple days ago for right now using 3.0 ghz at stock v (1.32v) for my 24/7 clock.
I bump it up to 3.2 ghz last night and did a 3dmark-06 run . On my old mother i was never able to run over 2.9 ghz and and when it booted at 2.9 it would run long enought to get a 3dmark-06 run in and that was it . The new SB750 chip and ACC are just what the phenom cpu needed.

SoF, have you got destroyer ?

I saw there one ;)

can you test him with 9950 :D ?

hmm, if you have got those all hardware you can make the the best scores in 3d on amd :D:D

I think I will go for some good AMD results :) Destroyer is going to be tested later but it does not have ACC which seems to help with OC.

3.3 seems to be quite ok stability wise. 3375 I can bench 03 on core 1&4 now but still can't go over 675 GPU clock :( :

i'd say the cards become too hot with that stock cooler.. unfortunately..

Anywho, that board (the first SB750 i've seen over here) is nearly £200, which i'm absolutely not willing to pay for a mid range piece of hardware.:mad:

yeah its worth that for some c|q show-off but everyone else is just better off waiting or buying that cheap ASUS 780G board.. only half the cost..

That's it time for a 9950 BE LOL.... I should have waited on my 9850, buying the first one on NewEgg gave me a less chance of seeing good OC., Although this SB750 board helped a lot. anyone want to buy a 9850BE???:D

The GX from Foxconn is almost £100 cheaper!

how much voltage do you need on ram for that?
lower as expected then on k8?

It is my new Mushkin 8500er Kit which I didn't tested a lot so far. 2.3V to be save but I think it could do with a bit lower volts.
I am currently preparing HDD for Vista to make use of all 3 cards and run some 03 again.

SoF, make the best 3d on amd please :D

Now benching ~3.5gig with 3 cards under vista ^^ took me hours to mess around with hdd cleaning, partitioning, installing, driver issues etc...but finally it works quite OK :up:

Very good OC SoF! Congratz!!
Phenom at those frequencies will like some water or even cooler things :p:.
Also you can try to use AOD and push CPU VDDC a bit higher to help stabilize at higher frequencies. Good luck! :up:

BTW I'm interested in this board, what is your verdict from OC perspective?

man, try Cinebench and wprime, its better than superpi :).

wprime under vista it does 11.2s @3375MHZ (just gave it a quick try no pic yet) but a longer run isn't possible with current air cooling. I need another 6Pin urgently ^^

I say A79-S is a very good board for overclocking the phenom. it behaves really well and is quite easy to understand except some options that seem to be still beta. but when they are sorted out it will be a very good AMD board.
I just ground-coated the board today and did some further testings with the cards - one of them seem to have an older bios and when I put that in slot 1 CFX won't work. I have all 3 cards on 680 now, higher will reduce score in 03 :(
When I have time tomorrow I'll do some DICE on the chip then. But maybe I can't do it before GC starts - let's see ;)

Well i had my foxconn a79a-s rig up and running over a week now . My final 24/7 clock on my 9850BE is 3.1 ghz. at 1.38v . On my old DFI landparty DK M2RS board the best i could get when
using 3 video cards was 2.7 ghz. The SB750 chip just handed me a new cpu . At 3.1 ghz it has all the power i need to game with now. You add in the new 8.8 driver i set a new best for my
self out a 3Dmark-06 16,226 score . And when you look at the canyon flight score (crossfire test) the 102 FPS score is getting it done for using 3850s video cards.The olny thing i can say bad
about the board is there a vista , realtek driver problem that stop the rear speaker from working right when using 5.1 sound. I'am working with tech support so hopely we can get fix.

What memory are you using on this board

I'am using some cheap $ 75.00 for 4 gigs a-data 800 (2x2) 5-5-5-18 i'am running 230 FBS at 920 ghz. no trouble .
i ran prime on it for 45 mins it when throught 3 test no trouble .

im pulling 16,100 with 2 3870's and 9850@ 3.2,3.0,3.1,3.1 on an old SB600 K9A2 Platinum

only thing holding me from better scores is the processor.

i cant wait untill another set of 790FX/SB750 boards surface

Dude, your CPU will do 3.3-3.4+ with an SB750 board. You have a good CPU it seems.

thats what i hope, i will do a whole benchmark suite comparison when i find a board worthy haha
