OCZ really found the sweet spot. cheap SSD's!!! it's hard enough to find the original core series in stock any ware. now that they know that they can not make enough to satisfy demand why not make them better as well! i would buy a few if i can find them in stock any ware.

Glad to see OCZ giving the middle finger to the other makers. Maybe it will get the other developers off their asses and start inveesting more time into SSD.

I gotta say OCZ really is kicking it into gear recently. Its also nice to see them not giving to much premature info on their hit products for a change. Actions speak louder then words in the case of OCZ. Big thumbs up to what OCZ is doing in the SSD arena

whats the pricing going to be for these new SSDs ?

I hope not much more then their first generation of SSD.

Hopefully v1 will drop in price a little bit and v2 can slot in that place with.

I really want to get my hand in SSDs, but its something that will certainly drop like a rock at some point, I may try out a 60GB for my OS if its cheap enough though

To be honest OCZ were the last company I thought would be leading the way in SSD.

It's very good and can't wait for the other products to be released from other companies.

they are working with samsung, there is a reason why u cant buy MLC samsungs anymore through conventional channels

The plan is to make Core more affordable and Core2 just a little above it. SSD tech is moving at a furious pace, much faster than i have seen anything move for quite a while. The push to make the drives faster is a weekly thing, it really is quite scary at the moment.

Drives arrive with OCZ early next week I hear, in stores immediately after.

SSD is not HDD, plus when you factor in the massive improved seek times with SSD it can actually work out faster. There is nothing wrong with the first series, its just SSD is new, and we are all getting used to it. A very small amount of people have had issues but this is no different then end users having issues with some HDD on some boards.

Its early days, improvements in hardware and software will come moving forward, you will see this from all SSD suppliers.

Regards firmware flash im still looking into that, i feel there may be a way without USB...we have to wait and see

USB is a great idea, it's bigger than a pendrive, but the speed is worth it. :up:

All this, though, is mostly due to the combination of the OCZ Core SSD with an Intel ICHR9 chip or something like that. But since most users have an Intel based system, I don't think it's just a small minority that has problems with it. I don't have hard numbers to back that up though.

Please don't blame a specific chipset, that just creates panic. I actually fully believe most of the issues some end users are see are bios related. We have a growing list of boards now working just fine with all sorts of chipsets, other boards with the same chipsets though may have odd issues...this can only mean BIOS is the issue.

Again SSD is not HDD, most apps testing SSD were built for HDD, so its hard to correlate any results from these tests.

I have aboslutelly no clue why the heck they measure everything with factor 1000. It's 1024 ever since computing exists. But noooooooooo. They sell you 750GB drive and you get less than 700GB of actual space in freakin BINARY format. Like they discovered America or something... heh

Yes they sell you a 750 GigaByte drive, but the PC will report the amount of storage in GibiBytes and a GibiByte is 1024^3 while a GigaByte is 10^9 bytes.

BTW, doesn't write performance have a lot to do with write block size and stuff like that? By that I mean that write blocks of 4 kB each will give much lower results than blocks of 64 kB each, something that is not the case with HDDs (at least not to the extent that is seen on SSDs).

in all honesty random writes is nearly 10% tops of what my hdd is doing. I'm not saying random writes are irrelevant but its not nearly a big issue.

If random write performance is important invest in a battery backed caching controller with a lot of ram.

I'm upset that I just bought a Core SSD the day they became available on newegg. That was a week ago. The first one got sent back as DOA. The replacement is running fine in my system right now as I type. So I have had this drive, purchased as early as possible, for less than a week and now OCZ is telling me that they have fixed it's problems and improved it and will be selling it in a week or so. Can I trade mine in for a new one? I doubt it. This is what I get for being so anxious to get on new technology. :shakes:

We have not fixed problems with a new drive, we are just bring new technology to market. No different than me buying a new 52inch LCD and 4 weeks later they update the model to have freesat integrated into it.

Wow v2 already, since I'm not in any real hurry, I'm going to cancel my order of the 'old' ones

will they offer a 256GB version as well? I'm really looking to buy one when size goes up a little so I won't have to worry about running out of space :yepp:

I read a userreview of someone who had bought the 64GB core SSD from OCZ (1st gen) and was somehow disappointed by it.

Firstly it had only 60GB (~56GiB) instead of the claimed 64GB.

Also the real life performance was sometimes better but sometimes less that just (!) a 7200rpm 320GB WD caviar sata hdd. Windows load times were higher on the ssd than on the previous hdd. Etc. Not the real BLITZ he was expecting. He did notice, though, a boost in the startup time of rather small applications, which is nice.

As for me ssd still has to prove a lot. And I'm not thinking to spend any money soon, so I have no other possibility to just wait and see. :D

would be cool if the problems are fixed and copying a folder doesn't take an obscene amount of time anymore. And to think I almost bought V1

I see OCZ guys are choosing their words carefully. I doubt there will be any mention of V1 anymore.:p:
Some got shafted some didn't, price of early adoption.

Don't sweat it guys. The SSD tech is new, and it's hard to be the first to push it.
Just be careful on your next releases, test extensively before releasing them, cause you KNOW the community will, and it will also hang your good reputation by the b***z

They said there will be a 250 GB version.
There is one major problem for consumers with SSDs right now, SSDs are evolving in such s neck breaking pace that the moment you buy one, it's "outdated". This will continue to be this way until about 1 year from now as we will be hitting the SATA 3.0 Gb/s limitation by then (probably by next christmas). That to me makes it hard to buy an SSD right now as there will be a lot better options in the not too distant future.

As mentioned the technology is moving faster than most comprehend, I feel new drivers (low level) will come soon to offer better OS support and unleash the true potential of even the slower cheaper drives

To explain 64GB ending up at 56GB

64 is decimal, we all know its nearer 60 in windows
then you have 5% set aside for write leveling, bad sectors (flash) are replaced with set aside memory space out the 5%, this is the same with standard HDD also.

Will this type drive fit in a notebook computer???

Hate to buy a DELL drive and spend 10 times too much money when I love OCZ products.

sure it fits in notebooks, I use an OCZ DIY running Ubuntu 32bit with rev1 Core

i agree with the reduced useable space, my WD 5000KS is advertised as 500GB yet only 469GB is available in windows :bsod:

I know Vista splits large files into tiny individual files each written with a different address, it does this for security reasons, but this hammers SSD as it was never designed to run like this.

Edit: I also hear Windows 7 is actually SSD friendly, issues under vista are gone with SSD under W7.

All solid data they show comes from EasyCo, AFAIK they didn't make any review of it. What I meant is that they often mention MFT in their articles and comments as something that greatly improves performance.

If this is an independent review, then MFT gains are simply incredible.
However I would still avoid it for some time, it's very buggy...
Review has less than half a year, so even if they fixed the mentioned ones just after, it's still unprooved.
However, current prices are low, user base might grow quickly, which helps.
As mentioned, there's a free demo for download. Maybe sb. from XS will do some tests?

Not all NAND is the same, the NAND you are talking about is sufficient for a USB flash drive where you are not demanding the same kind of performance and reliability.

If they was @ V1 Prices and V1 Prices went down. Then I'd of put in my laptop.

Just wait 6 months, by then there will be plenty of choice in the SSD market and prices will probably be even better.

But not in tablets :(. My tablet uses a 1.8" drive, but it does have an Expresscard 54 slot... hint hint :D.


On another note, I really wish it were easier to buy OCZ stock. You can't even view the investor relations site from the US, Canada, Australia or Japan.

This is really impressive, they just keep kicking out new tech, cheaper tech on the SSD at the current rate we might get to a point where its actually worth it to put a SSD in our computer, within a year or two.

so as a summary, what is the difference between v1 and v2 besides the capacity correction?

And a USB port so you could use it outside a case. You will not get the high read write speeds through the USB port though.

So do you guys from OCZ know or can tell if the random writes was improved?

connecting it by USB is essentially making it the same as a large flash drive right? and just for future references, what is transfer speeds of USB?

the usb port is for firmware updates according to ocz

Just tell us if it bogs down when installing software and other small writes like the V1 do. Aside from this issue the regular Core SSD's are fantastic.

yes, please do a random write test with these!

i ran small random writes on a hdtune pro demo and it falls in line with my older 250gb sataII seagate drive, averages around 6MB/sec and the newer seagate 350ish HDD is around 17MB/sec in that same test.

yes, its a known weak point of MLC drives, if random writes are important you need a caching controller or a SLC drive (assuming you want a SSD to begin with)

btw might be placebo but WoW was about 50ms or so less laggy than usual was 170-190ms last night off this drive and normally 220-250ms

Thanks for sharing your info.

HDTUNE pro tests seqential writes, not random writes. I bet the random writes are even lower for this drive and all MLC drives. (SLC isn't that much better for random writes). But this drive isn't intended for that usage pattern.

When installing software does the system freeze up? All the benchmarks in the world amount to nothing if in real world use the drive still suffers there.
