There are people out there running these monsters, 2,3, and even 4 card behemoths out there destorying all that stand in their path.
We need walkthroughs on the site not only for vista, but for our xp users as well.
I myself have failed miserably trying to get a multiple gpu client working, so I am not the guy to ask.
Instead, I ask anyone out there to please post a walkthrough for either or both that they KNOW works.
I'm running 2 clients on XP.

Ok I'm not all that great at this but here is exactly how I got 2 GPU clients to run on my 9800GX2 in Vista x64.
Step 1: Download version 6.20 from http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadWinOther
Step 2: Create 2 folders on desktop
Step 3: Copy downloaded file to both folders
Step 4: Run as -configonly, just set it up like any other console client but when it asks for Additional client parameters put -gpu 0 for the first client and -gpu 1 for the second one.
Step 5: I go into each folder and click on the F@H icon and they both open up fine. I have been using this same configuration for the last 2 weeks and have not had a single issue.

For XP this is what I did.
You will need Riva tuner and the gpu console.
I used 177.79 drivers.
Install driver reboot. Install riva tuner. Extend desktop to other 2 gpu. Use RT to enable ocing on all cards. Reboot required on other 2 cards. Made 3 folders in root of C: called GPU1 GPU2 GPU3. Copied console installer to all three folders and installed. Configured like a SMP. Set machine ID’s to match folders 1,2&3 When asked to set Additional client parameters I set them as –gpu 0, -gpu 1, -gpu 2
There are probably a few reboots I missed but I’m sure you will find them

I hadn't tried dual gpu clients since 6.22 came out. Must be 10x easier and seems like it. I do miss my molecules floating around though. :p
All the guides I'd been reading just seemed like they were making it harder than it needed to be.
When Atlas posted that he set it up just like a SMP it got me thinking:idea:. So I tried it and it worked.
Sounds good. I was trying to get the previous version of the vista gpu client to work and nothing came of that.
Now I just have to cross my fingers that it will work in the future the same way and not regress back to something more complicated.
so does gpu console run any better than the display client in terms of more ppd? i like the console because it isnt something that can be easily closed out of when my friends or family use my computer
No point diffrence at all, the core client functionality is the same it only differs in the system tray icon code and handling vs the dosbox you get floating on your screen.
In previous clients the console clients where the only one's which you could run multiple instances of.
Edit: If you think our guides are not fully coverd, and you found a guide somewhere else, you are free to base your own guide for XS on that one if you give the proper recognition ( maybe ask prior permission even? )
I agree it looks better if you can link to your 'own' team forum for guides and don't have to link out. Though I don't mind it either, and it's also rewarding for those persons/teams who are first to put up good/great guides?

SocketMan I'm taking you mean SetAffinity when you say 'getset'? And no, there is no diffrence in points in this version between the two variants ( as long as you don't use the viewer ).
When I disabled the affinity lock all three gpu's would be set to core 3. When I left it enabled they set to cores 1,2&3.
As for the board its a 780i that I took out of my game rig.

2 instances of setaffinity? Why? And dropping a gigahertz is something which should definetly show up in your production unless something was still of to begin with. Why don't you post some screens with fahmon showing, log files, cpu-z and gpu-z, the whole shabam you know what we need.. :shrug:
I have brought up a spare old machine in my office with the intent of using my idle 9600gts in it.
I think that I have updated everything properly, but the console and systray clients both refuse to start with -gpu 1. The error report is:

Did you extend the desktop to the second gpu? And the flags should be -gpu 0 and -gpu 1

I followed Burson's Guide up top and I keep getting UNSTABLE MACHINE Error on GPU_1. However GPU_0 Is working just fine. I have SLI Disabled. whats the deal?

Most people are running Vista so this is specifically Vista. XP is the same but with different paths. I recommend the SysTray clients for GPU2. It is easy to set up.
Install the client and don't run it. Go to Program Files and copy the folder and paste it. Rename the second to whatever you want. Go to C:\Users\PROFILEX\AppData\Roaming and copy the Folding@home-gpu folder and paste it. Rename the second to whatever you want. Make a shortcut to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Folding@home\Folding@home-gpu\Folding@home.exe -gpu 0" and put the start in as "C:\Users\PROFILEX\AppData\Roaming\Folding@hom e" and then do the same for the other client folder and change the start in to its folder. Use -gpu 1 at the end of it instead of -gpu 0. Run the card in Multi Display Mode, attach a DVI to VGA Dummy or monitor to the second GPU, you can use the same monitor if you have a monitor with DVI and VGA if you just run both cables to the same monitor, and then extend the desktop to the second monitor. Restart and make sure it sticks. If it does than start each client and set the Machine IDs to different IDs.
For the guy with the GTX295, the second card is the HDMI. The primary is the two DVI. That makes it more difficult because you need a monitor with HDMI to run the display from and then a DVI to VGA dummy or a monitor with HDMI and DVI/VGA but most at least have VGA since HDMI is a retarded idea for a monitor. An HDMI dummy would work but I have never seen a diagram for one. I am sure someone around here is smart enough to come up with instructions for us anti HDMI folk. I am planning on a late Christmas present from my beautiful tax deductions after the returns get back for a couple GTX295s so I hope someone does. I don't want to have to buy HDMI monitors for F@H.
I got everything figured out as of right now but may need some more help when my other 9800GX2 comes in later this week.
Mak, a HDMI dummy is as easy as the VGA dummy. You buy an HMDI to DVI adapter and put the usualy dummy on that, viola. :)

I think I tried every way I found to have 2 gpu clients working....with or without crossfirex...with CFX both clients simply dont work and without my 2nd card doesnt work (0% gpu load...)
I have 2 4870 with drivers up to date (8.12), 3 monitors ( 2 of them being plugged on the 1st card, the 3rd is on the 2nd card, it's my tv...) when I turn off CFX, 3rd screen isnt detected, don't know why (I'm new to CFX ^_^; )
Anyone mind explaining how I could setup everything so it works?

Hmpf. Against better judgement I decided to give FAH another try.. set it up according to MaK's method (used the VGA of my 24" to "extend" the desktop) but nothing has improved with this :banana::banana::banana::banana:ty software.
1. It uses a whole (virtual) core of my i7 for just 1 GPU, loads it up permanently
2. GPU 2 doesn't work. It starts up, downloads the FAH core exe, and as soon as it starts calculating I get a popup saying "Fah core encountered a serious error and terminates itself now" or something like that.

Oh, and check Project 5770, 1 hour 10 minutes 1 second on Vista 64 with an i7 920 on x58 and 6GB DDR3 and 36 seconds quicker on XP-32 with a Q6600 (which is so bored its speed stepped to 6x) on P45 with 4 GB (2GB Effective). nVidia Folding@home is now totally GPU bound.
For ATI users this method does not work on 48x0x2 cards (I just tried it on my rig in my sig) I believe that this is because CrossFireX cannot be disabled in the current drivers (9.1) but should work on multiple single GPU cards.
For cards with HDMI on GPU1 use an HDMI-DVI adapter then a DVI-VGA adapter
Nice guide! :up: My experience with Vista is you can't unplug a monitor. It needs dummy plugs. In x86 XP you can unplug a monitor. Other than that... that's pretty much how I set up my multi gpu rigs. :)
on my 2 vista 64 boxes, I can unplug the second monitor after the desktop is extended and it's fine, but if I reboot I have to plug back in... also need to make sure power save is not turning off the monitor.
I have those 2 machines that dual gpu.. 2 8800gt's in one and a 9800gx2 in the other...
the way I've handled the monitor thing id run a cable from the secondary vga output of my main monitor (ss below- 22" acer) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824009145
here's what I mean...
-the blue connector in the ss is the secondary...
-so plug the main card into the dvi and the secondary card into the vga.. (ss below)
-extend the desktop through right click desktop-personalize-display settings. (ss below)
-start the clients.
-make sure power savings is never turn off monitor and unplug the vga connection.
-when you reboot either make sure the vga is plugged into the second card beforehand.
OR after you boot plug it in and make sure the desktop is extended (ss below).
as long as you dont have power settings turning off the monitor, the extended dektop will stick until you reboot, and you can unplug both monitors if you want and fold until the next reboot...
What do you mean by a dummy, just a DVI-VGA or is it modded? I have boxes of spare DVI-VGAs so this could be an easier workaround than finding a spare monitor.Quote:

Make sure you install Rivatuner. it's invaluable for trouble shooting. With Windows 7, the OS can actually say your desktop is extended but... If Rivatuner can't see and OC the 2nd GPU it won't fold. It also identifies which gpu is connected to which monitor. My 75 ohm resister dummy plugs don't seem to do the job for the HDMI/DVI adapter. I bought some 100 ohm resisters yesterday as tha't what P2501 got working. :) I'll be giving those a try later today.Quote:

The only problem I had with this set up was forgetting to plug in the PCIe power to the second card and getting BSODs.
In your case, TV might not work to get the 2nd GPU fired up (unless it is HDMI/VGA/DVI) so plug the 2nd monitor into the 2nd card.
Each F@H process took 19-23% of the Q8200 CPU core - 2 CPU cores at 85-95%.

Feel free to use my guide from above but let people know who wrote it and where you found it :)
In my opinion a guide can only go so far, what is needed is a single file that runs the installer, finds your OS & GPU count and type, asks for your team# & username, creates the folders and shortcuts, opens display settings and prompts you to Attach & Extend enough monitors and turn 10 minutes faffing into an extra 10 minutes of multi GPU folding.

Dummies on one of the DVIs and the HDMIs for each card? Desktop extended on all dummie'd ports?
I have monitors plugged into all 6 DVI ports and have visal on all 6, I have tried using HDMI adapters as well, if this was not right I would get 'GPU not supported' error not 'Unstable Machine'. I am fairly sure that it is the bottom card hat is not running. It runs fine on all 6 in XP-32 but only 1.5 GB of the 12 is usable after the GPUs take their share and the customer has specified V64, the machine was ordered specifically for crunching/CUDA by a leading UK unversity. Am I right in thinking that if Folding@GPUwont run on all 6 GPUs then they would also have problems running a different set of CUDA apps across all 6?
Here is my method
I create Folders on the directory and nme them FAH1 FAH2 FAH3 etc
Then I copy in the zip file from Stanford for "High Performance GPU Clients" Console into each folder. I use Vista 64 so I choose the client that supports this OS.
In the FAH1 folder I extract the app and rename the .exe FAH1 so I can tell them all apart. I right click and "Copy" the .exe and then "Paste ShortCut" to my Desktop (or wherever you like). I right click and open properties on the shortcut and add the flag "-gpu 0" and close properties. Then I doubleclick the shortcut and this opens the console window which prompts for User name, team name etc. When you get to Advanced Options type Y and when you get to accept Scientific Work Units type Y and when you get to Machine ID type a different number for each client/card/core (some cards have dual cores) i.e. 2,3,4,5, etc.
Now to set up the next client for the next core you will need to make up a Dummy Plug if you are running Vista. XP you will be good to go at this point. In Vista take a DVI to VGA adapter and follow My Dummy Plug Guide and 30 seconds later plug that dummy plug into your next card (or if you run multi monitors skip this and plug in a monitor) now you need to extend your desktop onto the "monitor" the dummy plug makes Vista "see" as a generic PnP monitor.
Repeat the steps above for altering the shortcut except use a unique number for the "-gpu X" flag and ditto on the Machine ID when in the console config window. That is all there is to it.

In XP you do not need to use Dummy Plugs...but Vista won't let you get started if you do not extend your desktop to the additional cards/cores.
Be sure to open the Nvidia control panel and disable SLI and Phsyx:up:
