[Project] YAMMS

No, it's not a build inside the popular Yam vegetable, it's Yet Another Mountain Mods System (sorry to disappoint :p:)

I'm not much of a modder, and even less of a photographer, but I was hoping to share this buy-and-build project all the same. Please don't hesitate to share your comments, questions, and criticisms.

Here's a quick run-down of the PC hardware:

I unpacked and flushed one of my rads last night, but after unpacking the second noticed this:

Needless to say I'm concerned. The other rad was flawless, but I'm hoping these are just a little bends in the hose and it's not punctured. I folded them back out and they seem okay so far. Hopefully I won't end up with a face full of hot water when I flush it.

Instead of potentially ending the evening on a bad note, I changed gears and mounted the EK FC GTX block instead. Man that thing is beautiful! Go EK!

Picked them up from MM along with the case. Boxes were well packed inside others, so my guess would be either a Thermochill quality issue or damaged in transit to MM. Either way, I'm sure I'd have no problem with a return if it turns out there's a puncture - those guys are awesome. :yepp:

I'll order a DD mpc-universal instead. It'll cost a little flow (my original reason for going with the EK SB/NB 5 block in the first place), but I'm still over 1.25gpm, so no worries.

DD will be fine but I guess if you look at it from a different and somewhat odd angle, RRR might be saying that you already have EK blocks so you would be ruining your EK theme. Alternatively I might be a tad retarded but either goes.

Looking really nice. Reminds me of my build too. I got the exact same setup opti1203 front and triple back in horizontal alignment. I got 2 thermochills set up exactly the same way you do. The anodize finish looks nice..

I'll be watching this one closely, i'm liking the size and layout of this MM iteration :up:

I appreciate all the opinions; don't be shy. I did my homework for this project, but it's never 100% perfect. If that DD block leaks, cracks, or just causes problems we're all in for a well-deserved told-you-so from the big man from Texas. :rofl:

I've always thought that believing you know everything is a quick way to prove you know nothing. I've also found you can learn a lot by listening to a wiser crowd. So I'm just throwing parts in a box and hoping a well-laid plan plays out in the end. All credit goes to the manufacturers of today's fine LC gear. It's the golden age of this hobby.

I hear ya. I'm building a short mesh stand to fasten on top of the gel pads. It was originally to provide a better angle for flow up to the rads, but yours is an even better reason. :up:

My last shipments arrive tomorrow, but today I finally received some gear from PTS (west coast -> NY is slooowww).

My wife takes a polite interest in the hobby - I say polite because it's mostly just a passing eye-roll when I'm asking a pile of anodized aluminum about how it wants its tubing routed. However, today in the PTS shipment I received these:

Keep up the updates, i'm falling in love with the MM case the more o look at it.

Funny thing is, i've never liked the MM cubes, they always looked too industrial and metallic to me, but yours is different for some reason. I think the matt anodized finish has won me over. I like it so much i might even get one in the exact same specs as yours, hope you don't mind! :D

Nice to see another MM going :up:. Damn I wish I would of bought different liquid cooling parts and those compression fittings :slobber: O well I guess from here on out is just going to be refinements.

Nice build, just curious how the thermalright mosfet cooler fit on the top. I say this because someone on this forum had a problem with one of the clips on the top mosfet cooler. Did you have any problems fitting them?

Okay, so I was reviewing the thread for another post...you're not going to stick those breast implants under those DDC's are you? IIRC, the heat generated by the DDC is to much for the fake juggies...you'll probably end up with a nasty mess or worse, killing those pumps.

+1 Good catch. I was too busy laughing at the implants gag that i forgot what what they were actually for. From what i've heard those things aren't safe under DDCs.

I did lose a 1 month old DDC-3.2 from mounting it flat against my case :shakes:. I really dont know if this was the cause, but my new pump is mounted with space underneath it for cooling.

I'm back in town and off work tomorrow, so I promise updates and progress! Thanks for all the support. :up:

Yes, the stock clips do NOT work on the 790i motherboard. If you've already bought them, email support@thermalright.com with your order receipt attached and they will send you replacement clips once they're available. I have not received any yet, but they say 'early August'. If you haven't purchased yet, maybe just wait for the new version.

I hacked mine a bit to make it work. Check out this thread. And this post details the (ugly) way I made it work.

I'm hearing this advice a lot; sounds like a mistake I can't afford to make. I'll be installing the pumps on some modder's mesh risers on top of the implants. That should provide some good flow under/around without completely negating the benefit of vibration dampening.

At this point I have a duty to make the implants work. The case would feel inadequate if I didn't. ;)

If you take a couple of household kitchen sponges, place one on top of the implant, and then one below the implant. Mount the pump on top of the sponge and then clamp down. It prevents the implants from melting. Doesn't solve the need for airflow, but at least they stay perky and not droopy.

That would be 120mm black steel mesh fan filter. The picture makes it look like they're sporting a potbelly, but it's really no more than a slightly beveled lip around the circle. It fits pretty flush.

I went as far as buying some FilterRight aluminum filters, but after test-fitting them realized the bulky plastic and floppy aluminum didn't really fit with the clean theme.

That's a great idea, and you're totally right of course. The problem is, you're also the devil. That would be textbook build-creep. I won't fall for it! On the subject of implants - well, sort of anyway. The one thing about those fan controllers that irks me are the "erect nipple" looking rotary dials. IMHO, it would be great if they were the kind that you could push in when you're done playing with and they would be flush with the facade. I don't know what the kind I'm talking about are called but I reckon they incorporate a spring w/ retention clip or something...

I didn't get to tubing everything up yesterday, but as of 15 minutes ago, I have completed all the sleeving, fan wiring, and route testing. I am effectively done with the case. Tubing next! :up:

Hi guys. This build isn't dead, but I'm considering swapping some parts. Rewinding to last weekend, leak testing went off without a hitch, so I started some light benching. The Mushkin DDR3 2x2gb kit clocked at 7-7-6-18 @1600mhz on 1.85v without an issue. I'm sure it can at least go up to 1800 with some timing and voltage, but I'm not all that bothered about it at the moment.

What I am bothered by is that my QX9650 ES is a pretty mediocre chip. Specifically it's prime 8hr stable at 1.304v @3.8ghz. Load temps on it are 49-53 depending on ambient at time of day. So there's some room to clock it up to 4ghz without passing 1.4v. Sounds ok so far, right? The annoying part is the droop on this board. In order to stay at 1.304v loaded (~1.365v idle), I have to set 1.4v bios. That's a pretty hefty droop. Options at this point are live with it (I don't particularly want to clock the bios over 1.4v) or switch the board to something with better power management to tighten it up a little. The Asus Rampage Extreme comes to mind, and the upcoming 790i FTW sounds interesting).

I'm still mulling it over, and will post pics of the current setup this weekend anyway. Please share any thoughts you have!

You could get an e8600. I know is sounds like a downgrade, but I have been running an 8400 for a month now and love it. This is coming from a q6600 3.8 ghz 24/7 user. Unless you are doing encoding or massively multi threaded work, you will notice a speed INCREASE from going to 2 cores (as long as you are OC'ing the dual to a higher frequency). 4.3 ghz is way faster than 3.8. It is up to you though. Your board is great with dual core chips.

I see that you are using the same SB heatsink that I am. What temperatures are you getting with it? I put a fan near it, because it was reading about 75c-80c in Everest. How is yours fairing?

It stinks! I'm picking up an Enzotech SLF-1 tomorrow to put this issue to bed. I have enough flow from that 5.25" bay fan to keep it <60 (:eek:), but you take that away and temps just keep climbing. Stick a scythe s-flex on there and it drops to 45. That's not exactly a permanent solution though.. :rolleyes: What did you end up doing? I'll have to go check your build thread.

Thanks! It's Feser UV tubing + Feser UV fluid. The green is the regular green, not acid.

Thanks for all the positive feedback, everyone. I really appreciate it! The UV gear really isn't my style at all - I'll probably turn it off before too long - but that's kind of the point. The main reason I like liquid and building in general is the challenge of doing something new and different (for me) every time.

Here are a few more pics. I'm honestly not sure what else to take pictures of, so if you'd like to see something, feel free to ask.

I'm going to write a quick summary post of some things that stood out to me on this build (few words about the mm case, some of the places I ordered from, etc), in case anyone looking for opinions digs this thread up in a search someday. Then that's probably it. It's been a fun few weeks and thanks again for the input. Feel free to post or PM me any time!

Nicely done. I really like the blue and green theme. The UV effect is a bit strong in some pics but really nice in others.

One question: Did you use the standard MM bolts to attatch the side panels to the case? Those look more low-profile compared to others i have seen.

:rofl: My sentiments exactly. I have a damn fan pointed at it. It looks awful. I am probably going to replace the NB block with one of the all in one Bitspower blocks, when they come out. That or do the SLF-1, but I doubt that it could keep the temps under control. One thing worth mentioning is that the temperature sensor is not on die for the SB. I believe it is on the wafer surrounding it. If you did what I did, you probably cleaned away all of the thermal paste from the stock mounting. I believe that is why the thermal sensor is going crazy. Not to mention, the stock cooling isn't active for the SB, why should mine be? Ah well, I digress. I just want it to be cooler without being ugly.

I used 1/4" low head black oxdie cap screws from mcmasters.

That's good info. I'll let you know how the SLF-1 turns out - hopefully it does the trick. You're right about the paste, it was caked-on all around the chip and I took it all off. Maybe I'll cut a thermal pad around the die to get better contact from the sensor to the sink too.

I'll see what I can do with a black bed sheet. I'm out of town for the next couple of days, but I'll give it a shot this weekend.

As for the tips, that helps, but I think I'm reaching the limit of my abilities or the camera. Maybe it's time for a new one. :cool: Currently (and probably embarrassingly), I'm using a tiny point-and-shoot Canon Powershot SD600 digital elph. Yeah, I really need to upgrade.

Any update on a SB cooling solution? I have 2 active coolers here and I don't know which one I want to use. Did the active Enzotech one work for you?

Yep, worked out great. SB runs at 45 degrees now 24/7. I tried the mount with and without thermal pads (not on the die, but around) and it made no difference. So there you go!

They're actually XSPC bay reservoirs. I have the DD one in one of my other builds though. The XSPC ones are much better - not as deep (which is important in the MM case) and better water channels. To expand on the second point a little more, the XSPC res has a nice cutout over the outlet that protects against air getting into it unless the res is at extremely low water levels. It does a similar trick with the inlet and fill port to prevent turbulence. The acrylic also seems to be a lot thicker on the XSPC res, which is nice if you're going to throw it around the room. Ok, I have no idea why it's thicker, but I suppose you could say it's more resistant to cracking - although I've never had that problem.
