Well, I just ordered my stuff from newegg yesterday, i'm getting a pentium dual core 2.0, 2b ram, 9600gt and vista 32bit (and all the other computer goodies). What do i need to get folding at home to run on the gpu and cpu at the same time. (drivers, applications, ect.) :shrug:

Also does anyone have some tips for building a computer like what to build it on?
Building: Put everything together on a nice table or elevated area so you don't screw up your back :p:. Otherwise, just make sure not to scoot around on the carpet wearing socks right before grabbing your CPU :). If your careful, you'll be fine (hopefully this is what you were asking, else you can throw darts at me or something).
F@H: get the latest drivers from nvidia, they should be fine. Otherwise, just install one/two of the single core clients (making sure they have different machine ids-I can show you how to do that if necessary), preferably OUTSIDE the program files folder if you intend to have the UAC enabled, otherwise it doesn't matter. SMP is also certainly an option, just make sure that your processor will be able to complete the WU's in time, else it won't do you any good. For the GPU, install F@H as it says and make sure to start it up from the start menu-> all programs tab. As well, if you want to monitor the clients using Fahmon, remember that the data is actually stored under user/name/appsdata/roaming/Folding at home. As with the CPU client, make sure that Fahmon is installed OUTSIDE the program files folder if you want to use UAC. Finally, make sure to set the priority a little higher in the third tab for the GPU client, else it won't run properly due to competition with the CPU clients. Good luck!

ok thanks, i'll just use smp if that works well. so just the regular drivers from nvidia will work do I need any CUDA ones? I'll report back once I get the huge box at my door and start setting it up. Do you recomend just testing everything out before I put it in the case? Hopefully I'll see my stats rocket up! You will need to download CUDA from here, http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_get.html, and the GPU2 client from here, http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=4172.
thanks, how long do orders usually take to get to your house? because I just ordered it yesterday at 5PM with Rush Shipping So once I get it I'll start folding 24/7 with it

Simple overview for you
GPU client:
Drivers: 177.35 works fine. If you get cuda, it comes w/ those drivers, they work fine. google "nvidia cuda".... you'll know where to go
You can upgrade to the new core (1.08, its on this forum). There's a discussion about it.
SMP client:
The walkthrough on this site for setting it up. PM me if you have any questions about it. Run only one instance since you're on a dual core. You can run 2 on a quad if you upgrade later.
FAHMON to monitor both. Ask me about this if you need help.

Would a wooden computer desk be good to build my computer on if i just discharge the static electricity every now and then (there's carpet on the floor)
I live on the edge. I have thrown everything besides the CPU on the carpet and everything has lived to tell about it.
Wood does not conduct electricity well. Go touch a few metal objects to make sure you're discharged, just in case. Shuffling your feet on the carpet is not a good idea though. ;)
ok so as long as i'm not going to be doing any dancing while i'm building my computer it will all go ok! sweet I can't wait for it,I haven't ever build my own computer so hopefully everything will go ok!
get it built and ready to use for your purpose first.. once all that's done, then the folding stuff can be tackled...
while you're waiting on parts, it's useful to go around to all the mfr sites for your hardware... dl the latest drivers and burn a driver cd...

oh, thats a good idea what should I download the latest mother board bios and nvidia drivers? What else should I download and does a flash drive work for that?
mobo drivers (chipset, lan, audio, etc.) I wouldn't bother with the bios quite yet....
cuda drivers for the video and any others..
any external storage. Flash drive, thumb drive, cdr, dvdr, etc... just something you can popin or plugin after a fresh os install for ease of use.. you probably wont have an internet connection at first until you install the lan drivers... so dling all your stuff on your new build is hard iff you dont have the lan driver and chipset driver ready to go on an accessible source..
Yah i have everything on a flash drive, be careful and don't get cut inside your case. I recommend you hit filehippo.com for pretty much everything. I hope you have the option to install Vista 64 in the future..................
And this simple rule... better cooling->better performance...
thanks for all your replys! The reason i didn't get vista 64 bit was that I heard not everything works for it and I only have 2gb of ram but i don't know if that would make a difference. Will it be ok if i use a xp system (the dell in my sig) for putting files on a flash drive. Is there any format I should have them in? Like the installer format thing? (i'm used to just using a mac that does everything by itself)
I'm using this motherboard http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products?...ProductID=2615 I don't know where to get the lan and chipset drivers ( I checked on filehippo) ! If i can't find them will they come on a disk with the motherboard??
gigabyte has them... link us to the mobo you bought on Newegg...
and yes the mobo comes with a cd, not always the latest versions on it though..
The board will come with drivers but the latest would be on gigabyte's site.
XP and Vista use the same file system so everything works between the two.
Gigabyte should have them, when Biostar didn't i went to Realtek's website and got the audio/lan drivers. Filehippo is where you can get a bunch of freeware and video drivers+ java+ shockwave+flash etc.

Hey. I just got my computer at my porch today, i set it up and its now installing vista home premium 32 on it. I have an 9600gt and what are the best drivers for folding and gaming??
177.35 http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_get.html just the driver package. Some say newer versions game better, I don't play much but I found no issues with Crysis, Bf2142, Frontlines, Nfs Carbon ect so it's all very dependant on other circumstances it seems.

You're on 32 bit you can choose DEINO or MPI smp client. MPI is older, has more bugs, but DEINO has some performance issues reported at times.

Are you running 6.22 or 5.91?
I am running 5.91 b/c I can't get 6.22 working.
Well right now every things all up and running i'm just running the GPU client and the CPU client (its only the one core because SMP doesen't work)
Someone will post the SMP stuff when we figure it out.
I know Marvin mentioned working with it earlier, but I don't know if he did.
Is it simple to start and stop SMP? If not i'll just opt for 2 consoles because i can go into services and stop them and then restart when i'm done gaming :D
ctrl+c should stop it.
Since I reinstalled vista, it works immediately. For other's it doesn't.
If you want to be sure, shut down (log off might work too) to ensure it saves the files.
I run smp while gaming. I have no issues, my production just drops a lot while the game is going. UT3 gets NO slow down w/ smp running.
About SMP and gaming, it's per user diffrent. I notice smp running with crysis, but not with Cod4 ( don't you love optimized games lmao ).
Hotwaxisbad, please post exactly the order of what you treid and the results you got we'll try to get you sorted out. Running console's is an option. Pauzing a service iirc doesn't work, stop and start does.
Edit: and yes I did upgrade to 6.22 but I used the drop in exe so that only works with an upgrade and if you had and wanted to keep MPI.
I'll work on trying to get the SMP client to work later, right now i'm just happy with the 3-4k ppd of the 9600GT

well, i've tryed both the different SMP versions
With 6.22 beta2 for Deino MPI (32-bit only) and i open the file Installer thats a windows batch file I get an error that says "This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer Package."
With 6.22 beta2 for MPICH (32-bit or 64-bit) I run the .exe file I download from The download site I install it I then go here on my computer C:\Program Files\Folding@Home Windows SMP Client V1.01 and open the Install file thats a windows batch file. I then get this error (i'm just going to type it out because i can't copy and paste the counsel thing. This is what it says....

Think you will be most happy with the drop in exe, been flawless for me atleast. No need to run any install scripts ( but only works if you have deino or mpi already installed through a previous install ).
Your gpu is still slacking abit, can do 4K if you run your shaders at 1875, posted ss in the forum before somewhe. 3.5 is still :wtf: though don't worry :up:
What are your gpu temps while folding?

OK, so I just cleared out all my folding files off my hard drive. Now i'm downloading the GPU client and the SMP mpich one. I hope it will all work out. How do I over clock the shaders? I'll post temps soon.

Wow, well I got the SMP client working i think, unfortuinatly when I deleted both the CPU and GPU folding files (i deleted all the folding files on my computer to try to have a fresh start) now when ever I try to install the Gpu client i just get an error saying "Unable to install because a newer version of this product is already installed" I don't know what I did wrong?!
Once I get it going I will overclock the shaders and stuff like that
I now got the GPU client to work along with the CPU smp client, i'm downloading Rivia Tuner right now

Its a Gigabyte P31 I know I can change the Multiplier and I think the voltage.
Then you're set! Have fun! Just don't set the voltage too high!
Keep temps < 65c for 24/7 operation is my advice ( maybe I'm already to conservative to really be XS )
Ok, so i've OC'd the GPU and almost got 4k points per day. Now i'm just trying to OC the processor to 3ghz which i've heard is possible with the stock cooler. I've got the GPU fan running @ 100% and its at a nice and chilly 50c. I'll report back when I get my CPU over clocked
I agree w/ Marvin.
Its one thing to have super high clocks on a cpu that never reach 100% cpu usage, games, normal pc usages, or 100% for benching only. Personally, I don't let mine get over 61-62C just b/c cooler is better. Extreme OCing for 24/7 stable for say 5 years is much difference than max FSB/mhz.
You may want to consider a 3rd party heatsink to ensure you keep your cpu cool.
I got the SMP client working and the GPU client working.. i'm getting a grand total of 4348.01 ppd. I'm getting 4147.20 off the gpu (9600gt) and 200.81 off the cpu (intel pentium dual core stock).
Is that normal for a dual core?
200 ppd is way to low for smp, you're probably runnig in single core mode ( did you follow scoop's setup/upgrade guide? )

Should be stickied here somewhere, but I'll help you since you already done most of the work. If you edit your shortcut to the client to include -smp, when it finished this wu it will start on a smp one. So the target should be

the SMP client was erroring on me, so i'm just crunching for WCG on my cpu and on my ibook and i'm folding on my gpu 9600gt.

I can post my fahlogs just its not worth running for only 200 ppd and Boinc w/ WCG is easier to set up. On my gpu I was getting an EUE error but after reading another post I found that it was probably because my shaders were at around 1900mhz. Ya, i don't think that was a good idea. But its now working and is nice and cool at stock. Is it worth it to send the fahlog files, or should I help out WCG which would be more productive?

I'm gpu folding at 1900 shaders without problems but I'm having a rare gem as a card it seems.
Wcg is also a project which does the world only good so I won't hold it against you :up:
You can run wcg on the cpu, it is much easier to manage and set up, and keep gpu folding for the fah team. I did the same, swapped my quad with a wcg member's gpu for a week as a rough test, going to post our experiences about that later waiting on a announcement from Vijah Pande. I'm sure the guys will help you join the xs wcg team, and the impact gpu folding will have is very dependant on the os but not more then 15% ( my estimate for xp nvidia with your card ).
Well, i looked at sc00p's smp install guide it was Easy to follow, Thanks!! Now i'm just going to fold on cpu and gpu!! I've just slightly oc'd my gpu to 679 core and 1697 shader, i'm getting around 3.5k idk what to expect with the Cpu smp client..
I get a realistic 395x ppd with 725/1900/1900. I oc'd the core since I game in between, I can oc it more for gaming but temps do raise another 3c with 750mhz so I leave it at 725.
What I do find surprising is reading you found the guide easy yet you seemed to have so many issues before :up:

Post some ss's maybe we can optimize it some more! What brand card did you have again? And what are your gpu temps? Maybe if you alter the fan profile you can up the clocks some more ( I had to because 1800 shaders wouldn't keep stable with the stock 33% fanspeed, 44 or 45 is much better keeps my card @ 70c with aforementioned clocks :)

She made it inside the groccery story so many times, and when she was a kitten that was cute but she's almost 4 now ( times flies ).

i've got an xfx 9600gt non extreme. i just run it at 100% fan b/c it doesen't bother me and lower temps are better!
The attachments only allows pretty small pictures but you can always use http://imageshack.us or http://www.photobucket.com ( last one is a guess ). Print screen works if you goto paint and press ctl-v or paste it will put the image in your paint window. Though there are a few nice free ss software packages, http://www.techsmith.com/ has snaggit which is very popular :up:

Also, i overclocked my GPU to what you have, I just don't want to get an EUE error like before which killed my ppd.
My gpu eue's on 1950 within 3 frames, but can run 1925 with reasonable stability. 1900 has never eue'd a wu. Most of the times you can't just duplicate clocks and expect it to run, and I think I don't have a bad clocker and you might. Just monitor the client closely.
No problem with the pics, I'm abit ( very very very ) slow today myself :(
What would you want in a screen shot though? Right now F@H mon shows 509 ppd on SMP client and 3330 ppd on GPU 2.

How can you stand 100% fanspeed? I got it at 44 think 70c isn't bad for a gpu? And I'm actually afraid the sleeve bearing will wear out pretty quick on 100% :eek: But I'm told to be to paranoid about that so nm me ;)
I'm used to an ibook g4 at 100% fan speed which was worse, plus my case is under my desk also, i can't stand my comp not making any noise b/c u have to know if its on. I can lower the fan speed a bit so i don't kill the fan.
I just lowered my fan speed to 70% its at around 58*C so thats ok.
