the 4870 LEDS

So i just installed accelero s1 on my 4870 and on booting i saw 3 leds flash up. In windows all 4 of them are off until i start furmark for about 2 minutes and the core temp reaches about 50C. Then the second led turns on and furmark crashes. What can be the problem and maybe more important what do all the leds mean?

I have to say i didnt hava sinks on the rightside components( those black small square things 3 down 2 up next to the big vitec and pulse components) as i have only 1 long sink which doesnt fit on the cart.

Already plugged out some devices and reset my cpu overclock but didnt work so power is not an issue. Also the core and memory temps are fine so...

well the strangest thing is when i put back stock cooler i have no problem at all. ram does have heatsinks only the little blocks next to Vitec and pulse chips not. So the only explanaton would be that the second led is warning for overheating VRM's?

I have the same problem. I have my 4870 watercooled and every sinked but sometimes the 2nd led comes on and then everything is unstable.

i have the same problem too. watercooled the core and sinked every ram and mosoft.
only crashed on furmark but stable again if aa is enabled!

I have the same issue as well. Stock cooler, duo orb and water cooled. So I emailed my buddy Terry Makedon at ATI and got a response about this. Looks like Furmark is causing the cards to heat up more than any other app will, however it looks like it's more of a driver issue with the black screen and not a hardware issue. They have been able to duplicate the problem, however no application will get it that hot in a real world scenario. I think its trying to kick in VPU recover and its hanging up. However that still doesnt explain why Furmark is killing cards, in fact Nvidia has the same issue with the black screen and Furmark - also a few cards have been killed while running Furmark.

For now, use another GPU stress test and not Furmark.

Well FurMark really stresses the shader engine hard resulting in quiet higher temperature and GPU load. If you are looking for 100% stability, FurMark is ideal tool for testing.
Otherwise use RTHDRIBL tool and crank up some FSAA to increase GPU load in a linear way (1x - 16x FSAA).

video cards shouldn't just die from load, that's totally ridiculous. They are made for it. Besides the 4800 series is able to endure up to 100C? So its not possible to kill it with only 80/90 C or am i wrong.

I dont think not testing for stability with furmark means that your card is not stable, My card crashes at 840 with furmark and sometimes it runs for 20 mins and sometimes crashes right away, and this benchmark does test for stablility but hours of gaming at 840 never gave me any artifacts or crashes, I believe it is either a driver issue or in reality furmark is just too harsh on these cards becuase the temps never go above 60c under load while gaming with fan at 42% and with furmark no matter what the fan speed is the temp shoots up to 70-80 and even high 80's under some instances. I ain't complaining about furmark, but I don't think game stability has anything to do with furmark stability. it is like prime95 of gpu's.

OK, for the HD4870 cards .. the LEDs are as follows :-

D1601 - Red LED On, shows critical temperature fault

D1602 - Red LED On, shows External power connector A was removed

D1603 - Red LED On, shows External power connector B was removed

D601 - Red LED On, shows critical Core power fault

If you got the second red led, which means power supply is cut, then it's your voltage regulators that just overheated past 105C and died. (When voltage regulators die, power supply is cut, and the card would then complain about power supply... naturally)

Sensors on the HD4800 series are only correct if heat is distributed equally among the components. When heat is not so equally distributed, then they will be whack beyond imagination. So anyway... definitely have a LOT, and I mean... a whole... friggin... LOT of cooling on the voltage regulators. Actually, DO think about putting ALL of your cooling supplies on them. The core and mem are not that hot at all. It was the heat from the voltage regulator that heated everything up close to the 100C range when you were using the stock cooler.

P.S.: Same thing happens on HD 4850, too, and especially when excessive voltage mods are applied. I'll do a full report with proofs (pictures, benches, temperatures) and some other things later. But for now, my advice for you is to keep that area cooled above all else.

Just to demonstrate how whack the temp sensors are, here's idle temps from a HD4850 with AS1 and a 120mm fan coupled with a 80mm fan in a 22C room:

Noob question.
Anyone can show a picture with the voltage regulators on that need the heavy cooling. Getting 4870 on monday and putting on a S1 shortly after, also bought some extra ramsinks to be sure to cover everything possible.

you do not want to use a S1 with the HD4870, it does not cool the voltage regulators and passive cooling will not be powerful enough to cool it

the S1 is plenty to cool the GPU, but make sure you have heatsinks and airflow over those VRM's.

Those temps are different diodes at the GPU and DO NOT show the VRM temp. If you really wanna see the VRM temp download Everest from Lavasys (latest build is 4.50.1448 BETA).

Exactly, Furmark will stress the card like no other program. Try Furmark and Everest and don't be surprised if your GPU VRM temp is more then 100° C. This and this only causes your card to crash. I am sure everyone crashing while using Furmark have VRM temps way beyond 100°C :eek:

It is infact furmark that is causing the LED problem with my card. My GPU VRM temp is never over 50C and furmark crashes almost instantly so its not a heat issue. This is with and without overclocking.

What version of everest/tool are you using to measure the VRM temp? Is it possible you're getting bad readings?

I have the same issue with Furmark also, however, in my experience it has been partially related to PCIe bus speed. If I run Furmark 1.4 @ 102 (stock mobo settings) I hang between 50-70% @ 1280x1024 (All test done at 4X AA). If I bump it up to 105, i can complete Furmark @ 1280x1024, but hangs at about 50-70% @ 1920x1200(on occassion loses video completely). Based on above it sounds like the VRM is getting out of control, losing power with the psu, causing the video to no longer display.

Must check this VRM value when I get home, thx for the info guys! :up:

I am using the latest GPU-Z for PWM temps and checking the card for hotspots with my finger. Nothing is anywhere near 70C because it would burn me if it was. I have sinks on everything that is hot and 120mm fans pointed at the card. Furmark crashes almost instantly for me.

I am pretty sure the HD48xx series GPU has now 3 different spots(diodes) of the GPU itself measured (in GPU-Z). Like in Everest you have CPU/CPU Core #1/CPU Core #2

Without question the GPU VRM seems to keep increasing in temps when benching. I ran rthdrbl for about 10 minutes and my idle @ 60c went to 77 running @ 640x480.

Where do I put the snowblower on this card to get this temp down?

Yeah, that Vitek chip definitely needs cooling. My VRM temps are 95C+ and the Vitek chip burns my finger under load. Im going to slap some ramsinks on there.

**EDIT** I just sinked the pulse and vitek inductors and VRM temps in everest are still high, how high are VRM temps with the stock cooler? I think I am going to stick my stock cooling plate on there with my waterblock to see what that does for me.

Stock is pretty High. around 80 - 90, with help of the Accelero S1 Mosfet cooling heatsing [ a bit modified by me so it can cover all 5 Mosfets ] + 2 additional classic RAM heatinks on Pulses i managed to lower it on 55 degrees on a ventilated card and 70 on a non ventilated card in load, in idle it's around [ 1str card ] 45 / 60 [ 2nd ]

Thanks to everyone, my problem was my underweight PSU.:up::up:

I know this is a thread tangent, but anyone have any recommendations, would prefer modular.

EDIT

Launched Furmark, ran 4X and failed w/LED D601 lighting up.(Crit PWR failure).
Unplugged 3 of my HDDs, ran flawless 6X and no LED. PWR prob for me, if you were having issues with temps, I would imagine the designate LED would light.

Nice, I am doing that now. I will post back with results.

**EDIT** destroyed card by removing two VRMs (half of each) while trying to take the epoxied ramsinks off them. I will be purchasing a new card tomorrow. :(

Call that bad luck, For MOSFET's you can use the Attached heatsink that's in the pack with the accelero. As for the pulses i put there small primecooler heatsinks but the card is cooled by two case Noctua P12 1300 rpm, so even the lava hot pulses ale kinda .. warm.

Aaah wasn't sure on that thought it was just mislabbeled, makes sense though. Anyways dang :( No VRM sensor on the 4850's.

Mine does the same thing. Got 2x120mm fans on the backside of the card, 1 x 120mm on the top side. Everything is sinked. Where the F is the VRM sensor listed in the newer builds of Everest?? RTHDRIBL will push the VRMs to about 90, Furmark will push them to 126c. Using Everest build 1454. This was taken right before I went to a black screen.

Damn 126C ouch. I know they are rated for hot, but thats really hot. Some reason 110-120C rings a bell at least for most VRM's on GPU's but not sure.

I'm using a TT ToughPower 1000 watt quad rail PSU lol. Each of the 6pin PCI-e are connected to a different 36A rail. I hardly doubt mine is a power issue. Its even certified with AMD on their site with 4870.

Hey, you can cross one thing off your list. Why else would you get a crit PWR failure tho? Fortunately for me, the LED made me realize my PSU was underweight. Are these the first cards with diagnostic LEDs?

You would figure if temps were the issue you would get the temp LED light up. Maybe I just dont have the proper definition of the LEDs?

I dont know where to post this but maybe someone can help me. While playing Cryis or any game with my new 4870 the games freezes for 2 seconds anytime I move my mouse in any direction. What's weird is my gpu fan slows down during this freeze then speeds back up when the freeze ends. Crysis runs smoothy when im done moving my mouse in every direction but when I move forward and enter a new area it does it again. Not only does this happen in games but in windows as well. If I move a window around the screen too fast it freezes for a split second then becomes smooth motion. Is it a bottleneck issue where the gpu is waiting. Or is the gpu not getting enough power to load the information, or is some of my ram bad that it cant load the information. I dont know and Im at my wits end. ive tried almost everything accept try my gpu on someone elses computer system or use a different psu.

Ive tried every driver
Os reinstalls
Every Netframework is installed
Tried overclocking everything and underclocking everything
My old 7900 never had this problem
Tried every setting in CCC and in Ati tray tools
One last thing, when i got the card one of those 12v regulator thingys fell off and I reattached it as best I could with superglue because I do not have a solder gun. (10bucks says this is my problem)

Anyone have an idea?

What are the rails on the new PSU - check my post out on TechPowerup - 72amps the card is drawing in Furmark... my rails are 36a each - wtf?

Maybe you have stumbled across the cause of the problem? The voltage regulators become unstable with a certain type of load and crap out feeding all juice to the card, making all the over-voltage switches built in everywhere turn off the card.

Here is what I believe and what we need to test. The latest build of Everest shows the GPU VRM amperage draw (last reading) for the HD4870s. I need some others to run Furmark and watch the amperage draw. I dont think it's a temperature issue anymore, nothing is really hitting 125C / 250F as there is nothing on the card that hot. However, I see the GPU VRM amperage draw hit 72amps before I shutdown and the D601 light is a critical power trip on the 4870.

So I need you guys to run Furmark with latest Everest (build 1455) and see if your amperage draw is maxing your PSU rails. I have a TT1000 with quad rails. Rail 3 and 4 are dedicated to the PCI-e connectors. Each rail is 36a. My PC is going to a black screen when the HD4870 hit 72a draw, the maximum amperage I have available.

that is some insane draw if that really is the case. I have a single railed 60a unit and not even that would be possible to hold up to this thing. How is anyone to successfully stability test with furmark if this is the case?

run the furmarks with 2 or 4 MSAA enabled, it wont crash in my case! But it crashes with no AA.......

I don't understand how this is the fix when in the other thread you were doing the exact same thing with cooling the back side of the card, however with an even larger fan? What else has changed?

Ok, I ran Furmark with the latest build of Everest and the highest temps on the VRM's was 109c and the amps being pulled were 63a.

One other thing that sprang to mind is, I was always under the impression that 1xpci-e-16 supplies 75 w and each 6 pin pci-e connector can only supply the same, Therefore you have 225w which when divided by 12 gives you your amps 18.9a so how can it be drawing 63a+?:confused:

I think either the sensor is completely wrong, or the reading is completely wrong (or both ?) or it shows the current output from the VRM at a lower voltage like ~1.2V:
1.2 * 63 = 75.6W

On top of that, generally a good PSU can easily go higher than the specifications of PCI-E. But there is just no way in hell that the card is pulling 12 * 63 = 756W
