My 280 arrives today, and I have the EVGA Hydro Copper 16 Waterblock!

I stepped out of my GX2, and into a 280. I have yet to add a GPU into my 2 block loop. I hope my The WaterKegIII Xtreme with ThermoChill PA120.3 RAD, and D5 Laing pump can take the extra heat.

Hopefully you should get some good FPS, it seems like the new drivers help alot also.

Actually, if I set Chess Master to use the high resource engine, all 4 of my cores go to 100% for the entire game. :eek:

My 8600GT runs it just fine. (My official fall back card.)

I have the 177.39, 177.40 and 177.41 drivers.

I was thinking I should go with the 177.39 to start with. Not real sure on that.

I have downloaded nVidia's PhysX, and believe I should install that after my driver...

I will also be installing the UT3 PhysX mod too. :up:

I personally think PhysX has the potential to add allot of speed to games. We will have to see how many developers get on board.

Heck, just going from my GX2 to a 280 looks pritty good... (Cost me 50 bucks steppin with delivery included.) :cool:

For each FSB test, I rebooted and waited for all disk activity to stop. I ran Vantage first, then 3DMark06 second. Each program only received 1 run, and data was recorded.

Chart data recorded:
FSB selected - What DDR2 Frequency will be required - How fast the BIOS reports when booting - How fast CPU-Z reports from Vista - Lowest voltage required to Prime 2hrs (BIOS setting) - Everest reported Core voltage - CPU-Z reported core voltage - 3DMark06 score using default settings - 3DMark Vantage using default settings.

Currently with just my CPU and NB in my loop, my max temp's don't cross 60C two hours into Prime! Usually around 55C most of the time on all 4 cores. It only spikes to about 59C for a few seconds, even when I'm hitting my chip with 1.5v's.


In COD4 and Crysis, this is what I was getting with my GX2 SSC.
I have a saved 3.4 and 3.8GHz BIOS profiles. I'll load the 3.4GHz back in when I retest these numbers.

Q6600 @ 3.4GHz, and stock SSC:
In COD4 1920 x 1200 AAx2
Sync every frame - NO
Shadows - NO
Specular Map - NO
Everything else to YES or Normal
57fps in most game play.

Q6600 @ 3.4GHz, and stock SSC:
Crysis 1920 x 1200 AA off
Fullscreen X'ed
VSYNC not X'ed
Everything set to High...
Plane flying in - 29fps
'OK gentlemen listen up' scene - 47fps
'Parachute in' scene - 52 to 55fps (more right before landing)
Swimming in the water to the beach - 45fps

lol, $180 for that block from eVGA. Lord knows they don't gouge or anything.

She is pricey, but a looker! :p:

It's not so bad when you buy it on the card for $799. Also includes 3Dmark vantage advanced.

Looker? That block was good looking with the clear acrylic face. But they don't sell one like that. The Delrin face is like /twirl... I'll wait for EK's work before I consider a block for a 280.

Oh I can't wait to see some results after you get this installed. Yes for those looking at getting a 280 GTX and if you are planning to WC the HC edition really isn't that bad of a deal because the RAM and GPU chips are binned so you know they will OC very well and really the block only runs you $150 because the card sells for $800 which = $650 for card and $150 for waterblock :) Otherwise the block itself costs $180? Not sure why the price discrepancy?

This will be my last report on the stock air cooled 280.

For testing I went after the big dog of heat generation, Crysis.

I set it up at 1920x1200, all high except Object Quality was Medium. (4xAA no V-sync)

With the fan set to 100%, and playing from the beginning for 1 hour, 70C was the max I could get GPU temp up to.

I am convinced my card is functioning within normal paramaters. (Time to mod it!) :p:

I am taking it back out, and will be beginning my block install shortly. :cool:

I will take some pictures along the way. Time to put this pricey block to some good use! :up:

Removed 2 black DVI bracet screws, 2 black rubber plugs, and 10 screws from the back. You have to pry off the heatsink:

NB had no change...

SB is reding 1C higher... (And not in the loop.)

GPU was 38, now is 34. I lost 4C off my GPU temp at idle...

In your loop it goes from the CPU to the card correct? If so you do have it installed correctly.

Honestly it can really go either way, but for the best performance you want to have the inlet on the right hand side of the card, and the outlet on the left.

It doesn't matter about the up or down part, only the flow direction through the block.

Yes, My flow goes CPU block, to NB block, to GPU.
(Out the bottom GPU barb pointing down, and back to the cooler.)

I kept Precission's on screen display active, and watched the screen like a halk recording the highest temp I reached during each test.

3DMark06 at default settings:

Temp during Return to Proxycon: 43C (16C cooler!)

Temp during Firefly Forest: 44C (15C cooler!)

Temp during CPU1 test: 39C (12C cooler!)

Temp during CPU test2: 39C (10C cooler!)

Temp during Canyon Flight 44C (15C cooler!)

Temp during Deep Freeze: 44C (15C cooler!)

I have to say that I am impressed getting up to 15C cooler temps, with no fan noise under load. I had to run the fan at 100% to generate my first set of numbers. :p:

I am thinking that keeping my loaded temps below 50C means I'm doing pritty good. ;)

Another thing was when I was re-filling my loop, my flow still seemed plenty strong jetting my water through the lines. I was consirned about having enouigh flow for the 3 blocks. I now think it's a non-issue.
It still looked plenty strong to me.

If the question is asked if you can cool an OC Q6600, a 280, and NB all on a Thermochill PA 120.3, my answer would be yes... :up:

It might also be said that as expected, the full block shines under load, rather than just at idle on temperature reduction.

The 4C cooler temp is nice at idle, but 15C less under load stands out to me as more valuable to the OC'er...

Using the same settings, but only for about 30 minutes, 48C looks to be about the most heat Crysis will now generate...

This is right after exiting the game, and the highest GPU temp I have been able to generate since the install:

I love the block. Understand too that keeping your 280 below 50C is not this blocks performance limit. One of the boys at the EVGA site is keeping his OC'ed 280's load temp below 40C. He is running in the 30's under load, but dosen't have a CPU in the same loop. ;)

Keeping a OC'ed 280 below 50C is just my limit. Well, it is for now until my cold a$$ basement returnes to about 59F come winter! (Snicker...)
The RAD is really going to love it this year. :)
