I cant wait to see comparisons vs 8800GT, its main competition, i might end up grabbing a couple of these for crossfire, should do well on my 24"
-
hopefully it beats the 9800GTX
-
Don't you just have to love ATIs super clean board design? Can't wait for reviews!

The competition is:
4850 ($199) vs 8800GT ($169)/ 9800GT ($179)
AND
4870 ($299) vs 9800GTX ($279)/ 9900GTX ($299)

Nice, some CF results would be nice!
-
@perkam
And what if the HD 4870 equals or beats the GTX260 in performance? :D

1 Attachment(s)
Some specs from the 3 pages
The HD4850 is currently selling for 218$ in HongKong
CoreClock 625MHz, MemoryClock 993MHz DDR3
dual DVI and HDTV output, bundled with DVI-HDMI converter, supports HDMI output.
Supports Quad CrossFire
single 6-pin power connector
It looks like it's a low power low noise card.Let's not hope it's low performing too.

When you say review coming soon, you didn't say how long I would have to wait.
[that's a lot of stuff on the back of the card]
-
2900XT had lots of stuff and it was clean and very beautiful to look at. There are two different things :p:

who cares how it looks... :D
i prefer a "messy" layout that clocks high over a "clean" layout that sucks :D
-
Looks like a video card - but that's just my opinion.
-
And I thought I was the only one that bought a video card for its appearance.
So when is this review coming?

Easier for doing DICE and LN2 runs, isn't it? Or will the back of the card ruin that party....
-
Thank you ATI, for making a sane videocard with hopefully insane performance. By sane I mean one that can actually fit my case and my power supply can handle!
-
If you can't fit this card in your case. .. . . I don't know lol. .

it probably wont but lets hope it does. the cheaper faster the better
-
given the size of the heatsink on that we KNOW that card doesn't draw THAT much power.
it might very well be my next card.

Around the same as last I guess. ~110-120W

any one what two HD 4850 instead of one GTX 280?:D
let's hope AMD can brew their cat 8.6 more better because CF heavily related to the driver/software, if it scales as good as we expected in most of the game, maybe dual 4850 can blow GTX 280 away...
Price comparison: dual 4850= $398, GTX 280= $649:eek:
(initial test shows HD 4850 CF in CoD4 performs as good as GTX 280.....pls wait for the whole test result)
PS: don't kill the messenger
PS2: I am an NV fanboy who believe dual GTX 280 performs more better than 4 4850
PS3: I am drunk tonight
@Nedjo, ya the site is badly damaged by some WP plug-in incapability issues and needs to be fixed or upgraded.
if you still saw the RSS page, just press F5..

That would be something, hah. What I meant was that the 2xx line is 10.5" and supremely power hungry so it just puts them even further out of reach. 400 for the 260 plus a new case plus a new power supply = close to $650 if I want to do it right. I'd rather get a PSP, which I just did, which will definitely bring me more hours of gameplay than the 260/280.

Why would nVidia compete with itself? 9800GX2 will be discontinued.

9800GX2 will be discontinued, and 55nm 9900GX2 will never be made (it would have been cheaper AND faster)...all because they need to keep their profits on a card that is threatened by Nvidia's own efficiency :)

That's what they said about the 3870, it ended up really only consuming ~85W during use.

oh man come out with a review already!!!!!:D this is my list for purchases in the next while.
-Asus P5Q Deluxe
-2x 13.5inch subs and amp:D
-2x ATI 4850's for a little crossfire action
-Nivida GTX 280
shortly after which i will do a direct comparison on 4850 crossfire with the GTX 280 and take in all the factors and provide a mini review.

haha. hey im not made of money. so the 4850's will be a bargain and the GTX 280 from the reviews i have read and what i have concluded is that the card is pretty good. i read most of the reviews and the review i trust most (hardwarecanucks) showed it to have fairly high performance (faster than the GX2 in pretty much everything) and the thing that sells me on GTX 280 is it's single card! not to mention all of the other benefits that come with the new core (yes i could care less about power draw and heat output:D).
the problem that the GTX 280 has is that most people over hyped it. i will admit it is a tad slower than i had expected but if you look at the specs is is very explainable. the 9800GX2 has better specs period and yet the GTX 280 beats it. impressive if you think about it. and about ATI's cards while they will be cheap i am still not sold on there performance. i am not conficed they have fixed the AA problems and with only 16ROPs they will have some issues. one thing i know for sure is that the 48XX's will 3dmark like no one have ever seen before but i don't play 3dmark. when i buy a high end card or setup i expect it to pull max possible details at a good resolution (1680x1050 and above) WITH AA at least of 4X. the GTX280 has no problems doing this in any game (save crysis on very high) and i doubt the 48XX's will. while crossfire will help to fix the problem you also might run into driver and microstuddering issues.if you think about the specs show by ATI the 4870 will not be that much faster than the HD3870X2 which is kind of a lame duck on performance. but that the way i see things. hopefully ATI will pull a fantastic card out and i am sure they will be good price to performance. but i already have a 8800gtx. i don't want a little bit faster for a lower price. i want to be able to tell a difference and be able to crank my settings up even more.
anyways i will be obtaining a GTX 280 for a buddies video edit machine build (CUDA FTW) and i will do extensive testing to pass my final verdict on it.

Not much chance of that, Tweaktown says 2 x crossfire beats the GTX 280

nice one, looking forward to it.

My bet is the 4850 beats the 9800gtx by roughly ~10% (bit more, but under 15%).

I would like to see 2 4850's vs a 260 and a 280.

Why would they discontinue it? The profit margin is probably higher on those then what they will get from the GT2X0s.
-
They were scheduled for EOL already, and that way it won't compete with the GTX200's

The tweaktown review dude thinks otherwise(ie. it will outperform it by a larger margin :D).

well yeah, but it will eat away at the gtx200's margins. thats the funny part, the 9800gx2 is probably a better card (almost equal performance to gtx280 and cheaper), but nvidia already committed itself to the new cards...

now lets keep in mind these are not cheap subs. and i don;t why but i am completely addicted to good sounding and loud bass. so after the mobo (this MSI is driving me up a wall) the subs are the number one priority. it's not like the 8800gtx is going to hold me back for to long:D and the goal is to finally end up with what i have planned out but it might not be until the end of summer. but i will have a bunch of nice video cards and one pounding car:D

well, there are $430 9800gx2's currently at newegg, so it is cheap enough to compete with 4850 crossfire, and it looks like the 9800gx2 will be faster generally with AA and AF on. so as long as they exist through the end of july, it could put a pretty big dent in amd's initial sales.
-
Yeah I'm slow with answering posts sometimes.

I was thinking about how it's easier to design sinks for the card if the one side that's supposed to be cooled well doesn't look like a mess. Thinking of nv cards...

I don't know if anyone's told you this, but you're very right, and the same holds true for Nvidia. :)

And $150 for a 8800 GTS 512. We'll have to wait til next week to see how the 4850 fares in reviews and benchmarks, but they had better start thinking about lowering prices unless they can beat the 8800 GTS by a significant margin.

Whens this review getting put up?
