GTX 260 to $399


Nvidia was planning to launch the Geforce GTX 280 at $599 and the GTX 260 at $449, but now it looks like both cards will end up priced lower than it was originally planned.

The reason for this is simple, ATI will price its cards aggressively. The new suggested retail price might drop as low as $499 for the GTX 280 and $399 for the GTX 260. We were advised that some of these prices, especially the GTX 260, might go down further within a few weeks after the launch.

ATI's Radeon HD 4870 will again be cheaper than the GTX 260, and our sources believe that it can give it a run for its money. We will see about that, but at least the HD 4870 will end up cheaper to begin with.

Seems they've picked up on ati's bang for buck strategy for their new line of cards. Finally.

the chances of seeing the the 280 gtx @ $499 @ LAUNCH are slim imo.

I would love that price for my step up.

I will believe it when I see it. It would certainly be awesome but it is fud....

$499 is hardly bang for the buck especially with its preliminary performance numbers.

well Nvidia gotta pay those huge cores in some way.. yields cant be very good?

I hope AMD can simply outproduce Nvidia and gain back some market share. Price the 4870x2 competitively and they'll have a chance.

Dont know about price.

It's supposed to be the fastest single card. Some early benchmarks showed it to be faster than the GTX280. Whether those numbers were true, no idea.

most recent benches from the hd4000 thread show CF 4850's to be faster than the GTX 280 so i will venture to say that 4870x2 will be faster yes

I wonder if selling the card at this price will still be economical for nVidia? Didn't someone say production cost would be around $150?

Not that I'm going to complain, I'm curious about the gtx280 vs 4870x2 battle and if both will be low priced... awesome for us isn't it? I hope that other thread about $730 won't turn out to be true.

Supposedly it's AMD/ATI that are swamped with financial ruin, while NV are currently laughing all the way to the bank. Cheap cards with them (not the consumer) absorbing the cost is fine by me :D

There's only wording about more expensive card, so I don't have any doubt they'll do step ups for 9800GX2 owners. I don't think they'd want to lose me as a customer. I've purchased an Evga 8800GTX, 8800GTS (G92), and a 9800GX2. if they decided not to do a step up I'd just go back to BFG.

The nvidia die is pretty huge though. I'm not sure how big the tukwila intel core is, but if it's about similar perhaps we can loosely compare the yield?

Tukwila is ~699mm^2 on Intel's 65nm process. I would expect Tukwila yields to be just as good or higher than GT200 TBH; it might be a bigger chip, but Intel's process is way better than TSMC's and most of Tukwila is cache.

Even @ $499 I'm not yet convinced, but we'll see what the scores look like. Probably waiting till they shrink it to 55nm, while also getting a chance to see what the R700 (not the 770) is able to do as well.

The jump up in performance of this over a well clocked 8800 isn't really enough to warrant purchase, at least not from what we've been hearing about performance so far. But those figures could easily be wrong as well.

We'll see. 55nm process would do a lot for this chip even if they keep the heat the same but just up the clockspeed a bunch.

Performance vs price, at the highend or extreme highend, is idiotic. The logic is clear here, to anyone with any significant experience.

Also people and their requirements are different. A gamer with a 22" 1680 * 1050 display, is in an entirely different market than one with a 30" 2560 * 1600 display. The two, with native solutions used, may well have totally different opinions, and rightly so + it is also based upon settings wanted (maxed or compromise, AA or no AA, AF or no AF, how many samples of both satisfies one if any are required or expected etc.).

We are all different, and so are our requirements and expectations ... And anyone sensible should celebrate this :)

EDIT: Using a 1280 * 1024 display, with low expectations for IQ... who really needs anything beyond this new or current generation of solutions? Hopefully none...

Plus the 16 memory chips on an increasing complex PCB with poorly designed traces/PWM's that require far too many capacitors compared to ATI's neat design, etc..... all for $399-$499 with those manufacture yields, oh please.

Until Nvidia does a 55nm refresh, Nvidia's stock will be plummeting. Nvidia better follow up with a 55nm version real quick, in like 2 months if possible. ATI's R770XT cards really do look incredibly promising--I'm actually surprised after nearly 2 1/2 years have passed since its last reigning card, the X1900XTX.

Now, I wanna bet Nvidia will be finding itself in the same place that ATI was at with its HD2900XT. Bets, bets, anyone?

i don't think anyone will beat the 1950xtx with 95°C at stock cooler and 2900xt needs ~60W more then a 8800gtx so 2900xt still beats the 280gtx.

Also i didnt know the ammount of caps say something about the quality of pcb or the traces... :rolleyes:

This is very exciting for us consumers, $150-odd price drop before it's even launched.... either nVidia are feeling especially generous for all of us who bought 8-9 series cards or they are definately scared of what ATI has coming (4850 Xfire and 4870X2 in particular).:p:

I'll believe the price drop on the 260, but I have a real hard time finding validity in a price drop on the 280.

Well, at least Nvidia will still have the reigning card. But I anticipate that the production will be so limited that the prices will actually be jacked up to like $650 or $699. It probably will not ever be available at most major retailers or e-tailers. Nvidia's stock will still go down anyways since ATI will be raking in the majority of the market cash.

It is not the frame buffer capacity that nVida g92 and D10U are needing, but it is the bandwidth(which can be achieved by wide bus or/and by high video-RAM frequencies). IMO the reason why nVidia skipped gDDR4 is because it was virtually offering no performance boost versus gDDR3.

Eh... A lot of hardware in the EU tends to equal the prices in the US, but the Euro is more highly valued than the US Dollar, so really Europe gets screwed on hardware prices.

Still way out of my price range. I am actually looking forward to the 4870 to lay some major smack-down in terms of price/performance. Got my 8800gt and will not upgrade till I get a Nehalem system (year and then some away for me).

CCC has improved alot, i hated it too with my x1900xt, but with my 3870s it works perfectla, still had no problems and the quality options (especially for AA) are huge!

starting time still 5 seconds, but you once you've started it one time/reboot it opens faster than firefox

It's actually a 10-20% difference between the two but the GTX260 is still way better value for money especially since it appears to be a decent overclocker.

Can't compare, with CPU's most of it is cache so when you have faults you can disable smaller areas and it's harder to actually have a ruined chip due to redundant cache being built in. With the GPU's there's a lot less expendable transistors, so it takes a lot less errors before it either gets changed to a 260 or becomes useless.
Add to that 512bit bus and power requirements and the price almost becomes reasonable.

Aye I always shop around when I'm making a purchase, I woudnt even pay £400 for a graphics card. :)

Never really heared of Zotac but just read their website & it states if you register your product within 14 days you get 5 years guarantee as opposed to the 2 years regular warranty. (not that many keep cards for that long)
