Fun With Coolant and Motherboards

Okay, well, I've been extremely pressed for time today and am still frantically trying to get a bunch of stuff done before getting out of here... so I haven't had a chance to write up a blog entry or make a thread in our own forums about this or anything. Either way, I'm sure that you guys will find this little video amusing :)

I decided to have fun with a couple motherboards, some "non-conductive" PC coolant, and some distilled water--enjoy!

Note: I still have yet to determine whether or not I managed to totally brick either of the boards (something that I'll check out on Monday or Tuesday).

As of right now, I can say that the CPU, RAM, and video card are all working fine...

The two motherboards, on the other hand, are both dead. The board that was drenched with distilled gives a second of fan spin or so and then dies while the other board does nothing at all when you hit the power button.

Perhaps I should use a little less coolant next time? :rolleyes::D

Anyway, let this be a lesson to all of you: don't pour coolants on your motherboard.

LOL . . .sweet. I must admit I just learned me something . . .I think I might just use DI and then additives for color . . .what do you think of Feser water dyes? Can I mix them with PT Nuke in DI?

I like my Feser Black/UV blue dye. Doesnt take much to get it to look Deep Purple, but Black is tough. No gunk or anything either, although it will stain the tubes, like any additive.

thats what ive been doing and nothing bad so far.. i took my EK supreme block apart after running distilled water/pt nuke/Feser UV dye and it was perfectly clean.. it was only running a few months but seems fine to me. as stated above the tubing was defiantely stained but no biggie

Stains . . .skid marks . . .just part of doing business . . .I can live with that . . .going to try it.

That was very cool. And to think I was worried about spilling 1 drop of water on my board when I was filling my res....

Cool video, when I did my loops being new to watercooling I just used Feser one, thinking it was safer but thats made me think a bit.
I did notice the second board didn't die until you poured water actually over and into the RAM slots!

p.s I also saw the "challenging the Feser conductivity test" and I have to say....pink lemonade FTW! lol

You noticed even after the Dist. Water froze the system once, it came back and finished the the test then crashed... :p:

Not a bad video at all. Good job to the people involved at Petra's. Would love to see any upcoming videos :D.

2 weeks ago Feser Black damage my old mobo .... :/

Very informative, although I would of liked to have seen Alex spill some coolant on the video cards, for most of us if a leak does occur the first thing it's gonna hit is the video card. I would of also tried it on a board covered in dust and see how long it takes for it to die.

I didn't douse the 6600GT because, well, I kinda need that card to keep working (didn't want to risk it)... the motherboards, on the other hand, were purchased specifically for this video.

You're extremely pressed for time, but you're making videos of yourself dumping coolant on motherboards while running 3dmark!

That's why I love this board.

I would love to do that for a living. Not the run a shop for needy WC folks...but you know..throw water on electrical crap. Anything that has a chance of buring is pretty fun IMO :)

lolz andy, at least some of us really experienced the actual mobo soaked nightmare... and you're still lucky that it still booted properly after cleanup... some guys don't have that luck...

Sooo you just killed 2 motherboards.....:rolleyes::cool:

hehe good test man but i still don’t dare to drop any coolant on my mobo unless its cooking veggie oil but then again that well just deep fry it with out the right cooling :p:

That doesnt mean the dust on your videocard, or even the dust in the air, or the dust being pushed into your system by fans wont make the water conductive once it touches it.

To be honest i only take non conductive when building. After a few months when your system has collected dust on it, once water hits it, it wont stay non conductive.

regardless, its great to see another video from you alex. I keep getting suprised when i see you. You seriously dont look anything like you represent.

To be honest, i was expecting someone a bit more like Dave (movieman) in appearance. :rofl:

My brothers computer sprung a leak of water and the hydrix shistuff.
It got soaked pretty good. And it was on at the time.

I resoaked it with 70% alcohol(didnt have any 90%).
Threw a fan on it for a while and it came back to life. :)

Hm, so lesson learned... drenching the motherboard is fine but drenching the GPU and RAM slots should be avoided? :p:

That was a riot, was cracking up when the second motherboard started back up to try and finish that test. Thanks for the rather unique vid. ;)

That was pretty fun to watch...

We'll have to have a fun with random liquids and motherboards game to see what does the least (or most) damage.

I spilled water on my 8800GTS card 2 or 3 times, each time I disconnect the cpu WB (I'm stupid but whatever :shrug:) and after some soaking with a towel then some blast with compressed air then restart after 10 mins. It ran fine and it still run right now :up:

I use distilled water with pt-nuke only and this is what save my day ;)

The funniest thing tho, my brother has a h2o rig and he has no idea how to maintain it. I told him if anything was to go wrong, if he didnt have ANYONE he could goto, theres a shop in San Jose, that could help him. :T

my first leak test left me with a swimming pool on my 8800GTS.
i used canned air and a blowdryer, an hour later i put it back in and it still works to this day :)

Now the question is, what to do with the two dead boards?

My vote goes to sending both to the manufacturer of the coolant, along with the half used bottle, asking for a refund.

Half bottle? I hardly used two fingers worth of the stuff! The distilled, on the other hand... I used quite a bit of that. http://forums.petrastech.com/images/...set5/devil.gif

I laughed when the board drenched with distilled actually unfroze and started working again, right before something popped and it shut down. Distilled water FTW :D

Seems that when the water hit the ram slots/24 pin connector is when it gave up.

I laughed when the computer started the test again, after Alex doused it with distilled water.

That is sticky material right there, in RED and YELLOW lettering for all the Virgin watercoolers.

I have had water drop from my nb to the back of a 8800GTS, caught the drip early and no perm damage.

<crosses fingers, says 1000 hail marys, throws salt over shoulder, hangs horse shoe over door, wears the same basket ball shorts every game, performs every known act of wishing for good luck known to man kind.:D

Maybe this will finally squash some of the "non-conductive" coolant marketing. Good work

While putting my new case together last month, I had a small leak at the CPU block where the clamp was a bit over the nut of the barb. There was only a very small leak onto the VC, but it died. I frankly was surprised at how little water it took and how quickly it died.
