Heatsink on Pump - Opinions?

While I am waiting for a PA120.3 that is stuck in customs (grr), I hooked up everything to do a preliminary leak test.

The bottom of the pump was quite warm, so I added an old Althon heatsink as seen below.

Will this make any real difference at all?

I've got no way to test it until I can hook everything up (which won't be till next week at this rate) and it will make mounting more difficult in my rad box.

Waste of time? Thoughts?

Yes it will. Martin or Marcus000 attaches fans to the bottom of his pumps to help control the heat. If the pumps are kept too hot for too long, it can degrade the life time of it. Very clever idea you have there using an athlon heatsink though :)

Yeah, that's actually pretty neat. Won't do anything for vibration isolation, of course, but you could stick a piece of foam/rubber underneath all that without worrying about burning an imprint of the pump into it.

How much heat actually gets transferred into the heatsink like that? Maybe a piece of thermal tape would help things along? Just a guess.

Is this for a Skulltrail build? I see two CPU waterblocks. Anyways, good idea putting the heatsink on the bottom of the pump :yepp:

i don't think it is because of the socket 775 promount. I don't think 775 is compatible with 771. (skulltrail) correct me if i'm wrong though.

As it sits here running, the heat sink has gotten pretty hot. I am amazed at the temperature that these little pumps get - they are like little water heaters.

It is for my skulltrail. I have two Thermalright 120 extremes on the processors right now, and they work great, but do nothing for the MCH, which gets very hot.

Thermal tape would be a great idea, but I don't have any right now.

Ha ha ha, reading this thread has been making me think of the next gen of all-copper pumps, equipped with heatpipes etc. Of course, the third generation of water pumps will actually be water cooled in their own loop...

Seriously though... I wouldn't expect it to drop temps. My reasoning is this: if you get to the point where a larger radiator or higher CFM fans won't make more than 0.1 degree difference, I wouldn't really expect this to do anything (basically assuming the radiator is powerful enough to handle CPU + radiator load). Still, perhaps something as a stopgap measure while waiting for a better radiator.

EDIT: oh wait do they fit on the D-tek Fusion? i never tried it because all my fusions are being used.

yeah - I'd imagine that some thermal tape or pad of some sort would help to transfer the heat better than a straight mount. Right now it is just held on by two wire ties. I think that I will leave it on for now - its not vibrating across the table (I can't hear it) - but that may change one it is inside of a metal box.

I don't think that I am willing to smear thermal compound on the bottom of the pump just yet. ;)

Dunno but I think it an overkill with such big heatsink plus it make your loop look worse because you have already have a good *bling bling* with all those setup.

Couple of month ago I got an annoying problem with my old ddc 3.2 (red impeller) that want to die on me. It keep stop randomly. Nearly fry my gadget while I playing games with headphone. Thankgod I connect it to sensor that beeping loudly. I am very piss off and start troubleshooting the pump for several day. Open the pump up , resolder all the coil , clean this clean that , bla bla bla and it still keep stop randomly. Lastly I slap some cheap reused thermaltake heatsink with 3M thermalpad and the problem SOLVED. Quite weird but I guess it a heat problem. Yours is newer ddc with blue impeller I guees there should be no problem.;)

Of course, AFAIK, Sig was the first to heat sink the DDC.

I am going with 80 mm fans below my dc 3.2's. The pic below is the plate the pump will mount on. I cut out a circle to match the bottom of the pump and also there are 2 holes in the pump that the foam pad cut around so i made holes there too. The 80 mm fan is mounted to a 80mm to 60 mm duct to direct the air and sits about 1/2 -3/4" from the bottom of the pump.

I saw pic of people using a heatsink but my concern was how much use it was when the sink was mostly contacting the plastic case of the pump.

i found that the bottom of pump is not flat so i could not mount the bigger and flatter HS on it... so i stuck em to the sides...

Hmm...so next we'll have to have yet another WC loop to cool the pumps in our primary loops :D

IMO putting sinks on a plastic pump is just, well, retarded. You would be much better off with a fan blowing on the pump.

why not just got the next logical step of extreme and put a small water block on the bottom of the pump, maybe something like the mc60 gpu block or really any block with barbs coming off the side of the block instead of the top.

Wow, very interesting! I'll definitely try and make a similar setup with the 80 mm fan!

I have my pumps right in front of my scythe kaze's to blow air over them. Thats all they really need. But its fun watching you guys go extreme.

Also isnt plastic an insulator? so therefore putting a sink on would only make the plastic warmer unless you had air blowing on them, which would of taken care of it in the first place. :shrug: Waterlogg whose on first base? LOL...

seriously tho, i used to put sinks on my DDC's too, then i realized it stays the same temperature with the fan on them sink on or off, so i decided not to have the sinks. They take up foot print, and im running out of it on my MM U2.

I did some testing today.

The aluminum heatsink, while getting quite hot, did basically nothing to lower the temperature of the pump or the temperature of the water.

Putting a fan under it as seen below, lowered the temperature of the pump by ~8 degrees, and the actual water by ~2 degrees.

No radiator is attached to this loop yet.

Atom can you double verify that the koolance 13mm compression fittings will indeed fit on the d-tek fusion.
