fortron psu mod

opened my fsp fortron group 350W psu (fsp350-60BTP)

it has two pots, one on the side of all the cables leaving the psu. its really small and very sensetive, only turn it a ittle!

it raises all voltages at the same time!

the second pot is hidden under the cables leaving the psu and controls the shuttdown voltages. the fortron psus shut down atomatically if you raise the voltages too much. the fdefault setting is around 18-20%.

so if you turn the first pot too far it will shut down, in this case turn the pot back, cut the power to the psu and wait a few seconds before you start it again.

if your still not happy with the voltages you get when playing with the first pot, you can change the shutdown values by turning the second pot a little.

i didnt use the second pot because im happy with the voltages i got from plaqying with the first pot.

12v@14v 5v@5.6v 3.3v@3.7v

those where the voltages i got with the psu not connected to the pc. when i started my pc with the psu again i noticed that the 3.3v had dropped to 3.1v! so i soldered a 50Kohm vr (10Kohm should be fine as well) to the brown sense wire close to the orange 5v wires.

cut the brown wire and then solder each end to one of the pins of the vr. i dont know what resistance you should set it to to begin with, but since the psu shuts itself down automatically if the 3.3v rail should go too high theres no prob.

i just turned the vr a little more and tried to power the psu on again and start my system. if it doesnt start just cut the power wait a few sec and turn the vr a little further. i did this for 3 min until i found the right resistance and then raised the 3.3v rail while watching the voltages in the bios until i reached 3.7v again.

14v 5.6v 3.7v :banana:

only turn the pots by 30° , this should raise your rails to 13.6 5.4 and 3.5 already

i dont know how safe that is for your psu??

after a while, i think it would fry it dont you think?

stang, there are people running their rails a lot higher then me. stevils little brother runs his 5vl rail@7v iirc and ive heard from quite a lot of people who run their 12v rails@14v adn theres even one japaneese guy (lol its always the japaneese :rotf: ) who replaced the 3.3v cables with 5v cables, so hes running his 3.3@5v :)

ill let you know if the my mainboard dies :) the psu wont die, it has an overvolt and overheat protection, if the voltages rise or drop too much or too fast or become too unstable it shuts down the system... great psu! :D

well, i was thinking motherboard too..

how would you replace your 3.3v lines with 5v ones??

which ones are the 3.3v ones? the yellow is 12v, the red is 5v and the black's are groundd.. 3.3 is orange??

My brother's 3.3v is 3.7v because it is a 230 watt PSU thats half shot or something... 8-)

I wouldn't worry about the PSU. I would worry about what is connected to it..

im just overvolting 17% on the 12v line, and 11% on the 5v and 9% on the 3.3v line. i really dont think itll kill anything.

thats like jumping from 1.6vcore to 1.8vcore with a cpu....

if I were you, connect your HDD to a seperate PSU. they really don't like that much voltage

i have one of these i think.. that "overvolt" pot is 3.3v though and the other one is 5/12.. btw it handles a hell of a lot more than 350w and while maintaing completely stable rails that are alot higher than spec

I have an aOpen 300w with the same type of trimmers. On nf7-s 2.0 if 3.3 is too high (3.6v) mb doesn't work.

So whats the point in overvolting your rails by a significant amount? I also have a Fortron 350watt PSU. Think its the BN tho

its probably the PSU giving out, Dane.. not the motherboard.

My last NF7-s burnt because of my ANTEC 430W which died suddenly and fried the HIP6301CB (dunno why, but something to do with my "new HIP6301CB trick" :rolleyes: )

I think I burnt my last NF7-s yesterday (6 in two months :(), and the shops where i'm currently buying my NF7-s have enough to see me week other week and i'm selling all my AMD stuff to go to P4C flavour.

I have a Hi-Pro "200" watt PSU.. i'm considering trying it out on my 8RDA+ because of what i've got running on it for testing right now.. lol

(Dual P2 266's, 86 watt pelt, GF256 DDR, bunch of fans, 15k rpm scsi disc, 2x 3.5gb 3400rpm hdd's, 2x cdroms....

holding stable @ 5.15/12.00 with almost no tweak on the pot.. hehe.

yeah i have a samsung 200W psu that has an amazing good 5v and 3.3v line, the 12v line is really weak though. im using it atm to power my 30W tecs with the 5v line.

5.6v idle (pot maxxed)
5.4v load (1x30W tec)
5.2v load (2x30W tec)
5.0v load (4x30W tec)
4.9v load (6x30W tec)

180W on th 5v rail of a 200W psu! not bad, and it barely gets warm!!! :eek:

I burned up the 200 watt HiPro.. lol 8-)

Guess a T-Bird 1.2 @ 1.75 2.2v, an 86 watt pelt, and a 15k rpm scsi drive were just too much.. hehehe.

Even though the components are designed to run on

Higher 3.3 lines alow higher ram voltage (so can 5v lines), higher 5v lines can increase stability and bleah bleah bleah...

lol braggin rights? well not directly, you get a higher oc with higher rails wich then results in better braggin rights :D

Hehe, the common excuse of the ones who didn't try it themselfs yet as they are afraid of frying something. ;)

I don't drive a sportscar either (although my dream would be a Porsche 911 Turbo), but I can imagine what it is to drive one and I wouldn't say that it's just for showing off. It's pure fun!!! And that's what our overclocking mania is like, too.:toast:

Persoanlly im wary of PSU modding, and I try and keep voltages as sensible as I can.

My sparkle (fortron) will run upto 14v as saaya's dies but I get just as good stability (maybe better) at 12.2v although its nice to have that extra avalable, if I have any doubts with regard to voltage stability.

If a PSU dies in the wrong way it can kill allot of stuff, so im extra carefull.

BTW, Saaya only runs his 12V rail @14V, because there is only one potentiometer for both 12&5V and as he wants his 5V line to be at around 5,5V, his 12V rail rises, too. And unfortunately it's at 14V and not at 12,6V or something similar, which would be enough, but if he would run his 12V line at 12,6V, the 5V line would be rather low. That's all. It's just a side effect.

I think its the high 3.3 he is after.

from memory to get the 3.3 to 3.6+ I also needed 14v and I think 5v line was around 5.7 (this was the scary one)

I think you "may" be able to mod the 3.3 indipendantly on my fortron400 as there is what looks like a 3.3v sense wire... I havent tried this myself, but It may work.

I just found some 400w Fortron PSU's I can get around here for $86 CDN.. not bad 8-)

Bad part is they are "Ahinix" models which are "counterfeit" according to Silenx....
