Another WaterFall Reservoir

This will be the third one so far...

Kennymester ordered another waterfall reservoir.

Using Ken's Sketchup drawing I made my cut list. When making something that needs 100% perfect alignment it is critical to make all the cuts of the same dimension with tghe same set for the saw at one time. This is also the most time efficient way to proceed.

Everything comes out of these pairs of strips cut to 5-1/16" wide and 4-27/32" wide.

Before I can glue anmything up I need to tap a number of ports into the panels...Ken loves reservoirs with lots and lots of ports...this way if I screw up a port I can simply remake the panel form leftover material already cut to width.

My tablesaw fence makes a handy 90 degree angle to work from for the first joint.

Using a capillary appplicator I fuse each joint\ with water-thin solvent.

It is imperative to have true 90 degree corners and perfectly straight and flat and perpendicular edges...each piece also has tgo be exactly the same width.

It's pretty chilly today and the solvent is actually frosting up the needle on the applicator...

I know it's going well when each part fits precisely...but it's one of those things where you can always screw up at the end...

Before I can seal up the reservoir I need to drill and tap the mounting holes and then place a trip of acrylic on the interior over the holes....

There are a number of small smudges and runs that get sanded and polished out...except for the ones in the interior ;) but once filled with liquid they will dissappear.

I'd like to try my hand at acrylic for some testing stuff.

Any suggestions on the table saw blade? It looks like that might be more of a 60 or 80 tooth bit, but hard to tell. I figured a higher number of teeth and a nice new blade helps, but I havn't cut much acrylic yet.

And what glue is that, where do you get it? I've only used silicones before, no idea what a better bonding glue though.

As martin stated, I'm curious to how you make the cuts.
I have a good 10" diablo trim blade that I use for sheet metal and other laminates.

So so good, is it restrictive?

You can get the solvent/glue that melts/fuses the acrylic from TAP Plastics or US Plastics online. I prefer Weldwood Medium but can't find it...you will also want to get a hypo to draw the fluid from the container and a capillary applicator and few spare tips.

Although you may not find one at Lowes or w/e you can find specialty blades for plastic and aluminum (they are sort of interchangable).

What you want is a high tooth count (80) ATB (Alternating Tooth Bevel) or Triple Chip with a Zero or Negative Rake to the teeth. Thin blades tend to "walk" and leave tooth marks. A standard 1/8" wide tooth on a thick blade is ideal.

For the few times I've cut acrillic I've used a sears 200 tooth blade.
Designed for veneers it's a steel blade, no carbide teeth so it will dull quickly but you can resharpen.
Not having the carbide makes for a thinner cleaner cut..
Still got one of the 3 I bought back in 1990 for $9.99 each..:D

I wanted to make a fontain in my computer but found out that
I don't have enough space for this (maybe i'll do it external) .

FYI, you could actually calculate the flow rate with that one, it's a nice simple wier calculation.

Here is an online calculator, just plug in the width of flow over that top wier along with the depth in centimeters and you'll have a flow rate. I think technically the wier should be vertical on the backside, but it would still be a good approximation.

CD a little trick I learned working with plastics at hospital equipment manufacturer is that if you apply beeswax (stick form) on the saw blade while its running, the wax will act as a lube and keep the plastic from sticking to it and it helps make a cleaner cut. Works for drilling and tapping plastics too.

I use car wax (carnuba) for tapping...it makes a much cleaner thread...had not thought about waxing the saw though...

And thanks for all the positive responses. By the sound of it I will need to make some of these to sell on the FS thread. Sure would like a laser cutter ;)

The only weir I ever knew about until now was Bobby Weir :ROTF:

we had sticks of wax at that particular shop for cutting plastics and aluminum. It's available at most machine supply stores. I've even useda plain old white candle.

I use a wax stick from tapmatic for cutting aluminum....the only way I could get 1/4" plate through the table saw :eek:

that will work great on plastics!

Going to search for my real blade today. I have had about 10 requests for this style res....

Just got off the phone with Virginia Industrial Plastics...talk about a wet dream...6 axis 5 axis and three axis routers, laser cutter and etching, vacuum forming of almost any kind of plastic.

And the owner is a VIR racing his motorcycle today :)

My kind of hook up. He was an instructor at Cornerspeed.net and we talked about getting me going on some trackdays...

So what I am going to do is make up some drawings and cut up the parts and label them and drive over to Elkton and talk with them in person and get a quote so I can see if this is feasible.

I'll design it so the height is easy to change and the internal parts are all the same dimensions and make up sets for 2, 3 and 4 bay units.

First off, does this res oxygenate (de-bleed?) the water?

What are the dimensions of it? It looks like it fits into 3-4 5.75" bays, if not, would it be possible to construct one that would? (Would make it even sexier).

Would it be possible to divide it into 3 separate sections, by employing horizontal walls. For people who run three loops.
I'll try making a cad drawing of it when I get home (sitting in tech.hist class), to better explain the idea.

And finally, what would it cost to have you make one for me? (It's so sexy, I must have one!).

The first one I made (4-bay_) was too aggressive and the ports located too high in the first weir (thanks for the new vocab Martin) so the entry stream was turbulent and "jumped" over the first lip. This design the water simply rolls over the lip...no turbulence really.

It is made to fit three bays.

I ranm it for several hours and within the first couple of minutes the loop de-aerated fine.

I have contracted with an Industrial Plastics shop to make these in 3-bay and then 2-bay versions in lots of about 12 per run. If the sales are as impressive as all the reponses I might finally make some money doing this stuff :p:

When I have assembled tested units in hand I will post them here on the FS.

well I got the call from the Plastics shop and I will be assembling reservoirs this evening. Look for a fresh thread tonight.

How would you clean these? I have Thermochill gunk built-up on my MCRES-MICRO, and it made me wonder how anyone even cleans these stupid things out...

the first thing i said when i saw this was wtf, then i saw the pics of action then i was like O M G, I wanna try my hand at one of these, how tall wide and length cyberdruid?

What I want to know is how exactly you go about buffing them. I've had a hard time with this on stuff I've made, especially when it comes to getting out minor scratches.

This prototype was cut with a table saw and each part was handsanded using a jig to keep them perpendicular.

I just realized the Plastics shop is a 5 1/2 hour round trip and I don't have the time. So the parts are being shipped today.

what did it cost in terms of materials? and man hour's?

if they are going on sale would you do custom order's?

Hmmm, Usually when i cut plexi or perspex i use a jigsaw with a 15 tooth per inch blade and its fine if i cut it on lower speeds.

Also, I'm not a very big fan of bay res's, and I about 50% liked your first waterfall res. This one I like 100%. I think it is the only bay res I have ever considered purchasing TBH.

Yep I had to make a dash panel for an Azimut (yacht) to the owner's spec: 1/4" aluiminum with carpathian elm burl veneer over that It was in three sections and total length was somehwere around 11 feet assembled.

Not only was I cutting the plate to my scribe marks on the table saw..the scribes were long arcs :D. Cutting long curves in 1/4" plate is pretty hairy.

Then all the work to get the instruments cut in. Then the drilling and tapping to the structural beams I cut to fit beneath the dash...

Not to mention the magic required to apply burl veneer to aluminum...heh

Fun times...

I have been thinking about making a custom res maybe a large (3-5" ID) plexiglass tube as the base just need to figure out a way to plug the ends and put fittings on.

It would be interesting to see one of these that extended down the front of a Stacker 810 or similar multi bay case.maybe had a 3x5 1/4 chute that the water falls and then pools into a section at the bottom where the pump inlet is located. Use CCFL to light it from behind possibly.

The possibililties are endless really. I am going to make some for side panel windows...

Anyway, how thick is the acrylic? I'm sitting here drawing one up in 3d myself, completely out of boredom, and I'd like to be able to do draw it with Acrylic thickness included.
The point of the story is to attempt a model divided up into three vertical chambers, see how that turns out, if anything in 3d :p:
