Worklog Wooden Case

Hello, i'm building a new wood case, here the older I'm looking for a small case with good air cooling and silence. I started cutting the wood yesterday, i'll post some pics of the work i've do yesterday and today.

Size:
41,6 cm High = 16.38 inch
36,2 cm Depth = 14.25 inch
17,0 cm Width = 6.69 inch
It will support a maximum of 3 hard disks

Materials:

Hello, respect to paint, i don't think nothing actually, grey and black could be an option.
Respect to lights, probably nothing, but i've a cold catode in some place, maybe i could used.

Maybe i'll do a duct to the processor.
And tomorrow i'll probably start with the support of the hdds

Thanks man, i'll keep posting with more updates. Now i'll read some guides for painting on wood, because i never painted any case or over wood :D

Hi,

Just peruse my signature links--Console PC, Jewel Box PC, and DIY station have all been made with mixes of material including MDF.

Painting MDF does take patience and prep. The MDF is very very absorbent, so you need quite a few layers of sealer.

Here's my basic guide for achieving a complete glossy finish:

Sand with 200 grit.
2 coats of thick paint on primer.
Sand with 200 grit.
Make sure there are is no more patterning, where the mdf is absorbing the primer.
Unfinished edges often take up to 4 coats of primer. It might be easier to use glue-on melamine trim.

After you get an even coat of paint on primer, sanded, I would then lay down 2 coats of spray on automotive primer.

Then you should have a nice even primed surface to top coat however you want.

If you were going for a complete automotive glossy finish, I'd probably do 3 coats of top coat, sand with 400 grit. Then 3 coats of clear coat. Sand with 400, 800, 1000, then buff with rubbing compound or automotive finish.

Thats nice, I like the idea, though with my experience in building Sub boxes from medium density fiberboard (MDF) it gets very heavy very quick.

I will say though with wood it is much easier to work with, and always looks good.

Hello, today i've been all day sanding
The proccess.
First, with a pass of 60 sandpaper.
Second, with a 120 sandpaper.
Three, with a 180 sandpaper.
Four, with a 600 sandpaper.
And finally with a 1200 sandpaper.

The surface of th wood, keep perfectly flat and smooth.

Tomorrow, i'll start with the painting proccess, i'll paint with 2 hands of Synthetic Enamel white. First one hand, and 8-12hs later, some sanding with 600 grid sandpaper, and another hand of paint.

Hello, yesterday i worked on the cuts fors USB and power buttons. Today, at 12am y painted the first hand of Synthetic Enamel white. I'll probably give 2 or 3 hands. I'll sand with 1000 grid between paintings.

That's looking really good. I really hope this turns out well. I find complex woodworking projects can really be a pain, but everything seems to be going fine for you. Why are you building such a small case? To me one of the main reasons to build a case is to make a huge one. :D

Hi thanks. Respect to the dimentions of the case, i make'n small because, its exactly the main reason of the case, good airflow on the smallest case, but, it appears to be smallest, but a TT Big Typhoon fits on it :)
I'll use this computer, with the onboard graphics, for download Torrents and play games with friends like FIFA 08 and FEAR on lan, small and good games. It's for that i maked small.

Hi, i painted the first hand at 12:00am, at 18:50 i sanded, first with 220 sand, and later 1000 grid sand. At 19:20 I finally apply the second hand of Synthetic Enamel white.

For the door, might I suggest "Push to Open Grab Catch". In the US, you can see an example at mcmaster.com, part no. 10825A28. That way you won't need any knob at all, because it looks like you're going for a sleek look.

I used one here.

Thanks Navig, i'll go for your suggestion, it's the better for the case estetic, without the knob.
It's look really nice the system to open on the video, good work and good painting job on the case

Thanks man, my syster make the templates, i told, the design, and she makes the templates and pasted then on the case :p: she was a big help with the templates proccess :)

And its really easy to paint with the templates :D

I hope to have a little of time tomorrow so i can paint all the case or at least the red part :)

What are you using to hold the MDF together? I thought screws would split the MDF.

Hello, i use screws self, first i make a hole where i want to put a screw with a 3mm wick, then i put some Glue on the holes of every screw and then i screwed the screws, so with the glue and the hole with the screw its keep really tight. :D

If i wont do the hole first, the MDF split, so first do a 3mm hole, and you wouldn't have any problem :D

hi the screws have 18mm, if you back the other page you will see that where its goes the head of the screws, i make a little big hole of 3 mm of deep and the with of the head of the screw, so the screw keep a little inside of the MDF, then i fill with glue more sandust over the screws, and the screws dissapear, then i sanded over the glue and sandust, and the wood keep plain :D

Yeap, 14cm the 3 fans, model, Evercool Red Scorpion, 14cm, 67cfm, only 22.1dba and really nice price 8.77u$s :D

Now, only left, made the start and reset button, put the usb frontpanel.
And buy the silicone to make the legs for the case, to eliminate possible vibrations, and make the letters with my name on both sides :D

Hi, today I install the front USB and sound.
I made the reset and power buttons, install both, but only make the button for the reset, now left to make the power button, my nick letter for the side, and buy silicone to make the legs and put beetween the fans and the wood, and all over the DVDrw and the hdds, so all the vibrations will gone :D

Really thanks, 90% done :D

Only have to buy some silicone on something similar, to put on the botton, so dont transmite any vibration, and also, put some on the fans, dvdrw and disk, so i can reduce to 0 the vibrations :D

And also paint my name on one of the sides :)

Hello, today i applied a glue call Fastix, similar surface to silicona, i put on the edges of the fans, so when i screw the screw i'll kill all the possible vibrations (i'll also put some Fastix beetwen the head of the screw and the fans.

I also put a thin layer when it'll be rest the PSU, and also on the 5 1/4 bays, so i can eliminate the vibrations of the psu, and the dvdrw and fanbus.

Only left to make the caps for the case, from that way i'll probably eliminate the possible transference of vibrations from the case to the desktop.
I also have to make the letters with my nick for the side. And the button of power.

I am not persuaded as the legs were yesterday, so today I again using a mold, gave them 9mm x 9mm x 15cm long, Its look better now. Photos of the process:

Some actualizations, i install the front USB, only left go to the electronic shop and buy buttons for power and reset, and polish the case, when i do that, i'll post the final pictures :D

never any final pictures posted? I wanted to see what the finish was like when it was all done! your giving me ideas now to make a wooden structured case but spray it for the finish and make it an odd shape!

i man is great!! i think about make own too but from time when i left my country i dont have tools. but one day i do my one but intention are hide and make easier use of water cooling.
