Is there anyway to run WCG on a rig that has no video card? It has everything but a VC....
Sure, most MB's will boot without one. Sometimes there's a setting in BIOS like "halt on no errors". Just use remote desktop or BOINCview to keep tabs on it My whole farm runs without vid cards.
Well it runs on Linux and I have not figured out how to do boincview with it, I ordered a cheap ATI card from newegg that had free shipping but it was DOA so I sent it back... I will just turn it on and hope it works, it was running WCG before until I robbed the VC for another rig...
You can always look on your device stats on the WCG page to make sure it's at least putting up daily scores.
Maybe one of the Linux guys will pipe in with how to boincview on Linux.
Just some thoughts on it.....Caveat: I'm no Linux expert by any means....Maybe it's just like on a win machine since I would imagine it has generated the equivalent of GUI_RPC_AUTH and is looking for a remote_hosts config file. Perhaps you could use a file search function and see what's in the boinc directory. If GUI_RPC_AUTH is there maybe you could throw on the remote host file and away you go...
What Linux Distro are you using? Most decent ones have some kind of remote access built in, so you can "borrow" a card from another machine, boot it up, set up remote access, then close down, remove card, reboot, and then away you go. You might just have to make sure that the OS doesn't care if there's a VC or not.

Ah SneakerNet. The good old days. Well any day I was younger was "a good old day" :)
:woot: :woot:
Yeah, I would make sure the bios is setup to skip any errors first, like lack of keyboard or whatnot, including no VC. Do you have openssh setup(the standard way to launch an encrypted session into a linux machine)?
Basically all you need to do to remote manage a boinc installation is setup remote_hosts.cfg with the specified IPs to control it(or else take the risk and run boinc with the '--allow_remote_gui_rpc' arguement to allow all to access it) and have the password set in gui_rpc_auth.cfg that'll be required to login. Let us know if you need any more help or if there are problems :)
If he's just accessing the computer from within his (secured) home LAN, there's no need for anything more advanced than an un-encrypted standard remote access. Makes things a hell of a lot easier :p:

i am bring my main quad back to 24/7 crunching.
Well, telnet would be un-encypted, and I don't hear it really being used over ssh(which should be considered secure for the most part)... For all intents and purposes openssh isn't very hard to setup, at least as a binary package. I know in the past I've had to manually setup an RSA/DSA key, but I swear with most distros these days it'll take care of the hard part and you only have to modify the config file if need be.
Heh, fair enough. For my Ubuntu rigs, I just enable Remote Desktop from settings, and then use something like UltraVNC Viewer to check up on them from my main rig. Takes all of 4-5 clicks to set up Remote Desktop on the 'buntu machine :p:
Eller
OHHHHHHH, yes, thats the super secret dual whatchamacallit with the supersecret XXnm process that amongst other things is supposed to regrow your hair, put lead in your pencil and make the sun shine every day all while working to finds cures at a rate unseen my modern man.
I guess that clears up any questions on this subject!
Way to go with that, it's built-in with Ubuntu. I go under network properties with the icon in the top corner and set a fixed IP address, then use the Terminal Server Client under "Internet" to connect to that IP addy via VNC.
:shakes:
System > Preferences > Remote Desktop. Tick the top two boxes, and password is optional depending on how many people are on your LAN. Then download UltraVNC Viewer (bottom download link: UltraVNC-Viewer-104-Security-Update-2---Feb-8-2008.zip), and when using that just type in the local IP address (192.168.0.xxx). Won't allow you to access the computers from outside your local network, but it's dead easy to set up, and gets the job done.
For added lulz, the screenshot is taken using UltraVNC Viewer to access one of my Ubuntu computers :p:
Also, gotta love how long it takes my 1.7Ghz P4 to process these work units :p:
Eller
Ok, now motivate some lurkers. :D
http://xs125.xs.to/xs125/08131/hamstercrunch208.jpg
For sure !
If you're on another ubuntu machine, you can use the built-in Terminal Server Client (under Applications->Internet) as a VNC viewer !:yepp:
Ok had it working but when I remove the video card I can not connect to the machine. I set it to not stop on any errors in the bios. Maybe its because of the Ubuntu log in username and password?
Enabled auto log in but still no go, the MB in question is a P35 DQ6. Maybe it does not work without a VC but it comes on and acts like its working....
Are you able to tell if it's still pulling an IP from the network and is ping-able? If not, then it must be getting hung up somewhere on boot-up :-/
nice guys
FWIW my two meager WCG crunchers are back running as of 5 minutes ago.
go into your bios and set video from pcie to none, that will tell the board and the os it is running headless and allow it operate properly.
hmmm, never seen one that wouldn't let you run headless before, well anything newer than a 486 anyway.
What is the rivalry between Xtremesystems and Easynews? They are my newsgroup provider... I'm nearly old enough to boinc lmao
It MIGHT be that the X Server is hanging during Ubuntu's startup because of the lack of video card. I can't remember exactly how you get around this, but I think you need to boot into Ubuntu, and then manually set the resolution and such (rather than having it auto). I'm not 100% sure about this, but I'm sure the guys over at the Ubuntu Forums can get you fixed.
Eller
It's just we want to be number 1, to find the cures for these crappy illness' and be the best at what we do.......BUY HARDWARE!
When XS first joined WCG in force back in August 2006 EasyNews was the big baddass on the block.. We set a goal to catch them and it will happen!
From there it's on and after Team 2ch..
Oh did I mention that both of those teams have in excess of 5000 members and we have a group of essentially 270 that contributes daily..;)
Yeah, since the fact VNC would be linked to the X-server(and subsequently the VC) you might have to mess with the config file(/etc/X11/xorg.conf), either manually or with a gui. I don't really mess with X-windows too much, so I don't know for sure.
You might also want to check out the logs for the X-server, should be something like /var/log/Xorg.*.log, with * being a number and the latest log being the lowest value(0).
I'm pretty sure openssh(which would be independent of VC) is easy to set up in Ubuntu, but I don't think I personally set it up the time I used that distro, so I'm not certain if anything beyond installing the package is required. Granted that would require you to do things in command-line(except you can do X11 forwarding to allow you to run GUIs over it, but that takes a little bit of work for windows and you wouldn't have your full desktop), which might not be your preference.
Yeah, just pick up some $10-30 PCI or PCIe card off eBay. It's not like the graphics demands for stock Ubuntu are that high :P
Eller
The latest version comes with compiz-fusion enabled by default (though with crappy configuration controls) so if you're going to use the desktop, get decent graphics hardware. If you're gonna run it headless, spend as little as humanly possible.
I think we jinxed ourselves with this thread.
Easynews - 5,181,182

I'm running Ubuntu 7.10 on a crappy integrated, and Compiz-Fuzion isn't enabled. Hell, Compiz-Fuzion isn't even installed. You don't get any sort of fancy GUI until you install graphics drivers, and even then, the standard one that comes with Ubuntu is just some little changes.
Eller
Interesting, wikipedia also says it's enabled by default, but like you said, things will remain plain until you install the graphics drivers.
Still great work though. Was only a couple of weeks ago I was excited we were getting over 4.5M...now 4.9M... :D
We will get them tomorrow...
Got it working pulled a 3870x2 from my CrossfireX rig since I do not need it right now anyway and put it in another rig so I could put that VC on the other rig...
Got quad #4 going this weekend
http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/1...quadlw2.th.jpg
Another nice G0 , only 1.344vcore
you're sure that's stable
It's stable with only 1.32, but it's on my DS3-R, and it jumps from 1.32-1.34. The DS3-R is a good board, but the droop is terrible. It's 1.4 at idle. I'm using a P5K Deluxe with one of my other quads. I'm going to switch them around and see if i can get more out of this chip.
Not to worry guys, college disbursment is on its way, and when it gets here one more quad to mix:devil:
Heck of a day gentlemen:

I look at this like a marathon.
We'll have some faster and some slower miles but we will get there.
If just one year ago someone had said we'd be doing over 5 mil a day with under 300 guys there would have been a lot of laughter..
No ones laughing any more..;)
I'm laughing, but it's a good laughter. :D
I'd say it's more of a evil cackle than laughter :p: Something like "Mwahahahaha! Our ~300 guys are beating teams with 5000+ members"
Eller
A ring with a stone for every team we pass..............
Just wait for those tasty tasty Nehalem dual-socket servers, Dave, then both Easynews and Team 2ch will be crunched beneath the merciless tread of team XSDC.
And I dunno, that holiday in Rio would probably be a fitting reward, even if it might end up killing you :p:
Eller
Maybe this...
http://www.evinite.fr/images/champag...stal-1999-.jpg
Yeah, I think once I get a Q9450/X3350 for my desktop (plus obviously get my Q6600 B3 running in a secondary rig) I'm going to start saving up for some Nehalem stuff. A dual-socket server if I could afford it, but if not, just a couple of quads :p:

Booyah!!!
Late August/Early September is rapidly closing in--a good thing. I'll put an E2140 @ 3GHz on the grid in about 5 months. I'll likely also drop a Celeron-M @ 630mhz on the grid at the same time... hopefully one of those tiny Asus Eee PC 4G's with the extended battery and WinXP. My shopping list for August is as follows...
1x2GB Transcend 2GB DDR2 800 CL5
1xWD Caviar GP 750GB
1xWindows XP Home OEM
1xAsus Eee PC 4G
1xInexpensive 20+" LCD with HDMI (Hanns-G at $200)
1xLow-end sound card to output speech/radios over for FSX Deluxe
1xUSB keyboard
1xUSB mouse
1x8GB (2x4GB) SDHC memory cards for the Eee PC
1xNew speaker system
Estimated total... $1000. That's mainly to update my desktop and make the Eee PC more functional--since I am NOT lugging two 17" CRTs with me. One tower is bad enough as it is--not even considering the Infinity's added kilogram and two or three hard drives in the steel case.
Congratulations team!
It won't be long before DDTUNG has a million point day.
My a/c unit is due today so this weekend I can install it and have more computer run time. Summer here is tough and since I can't leave my door open (damn cat) this should make all the difference.
Believe me, I would like to do more than overclock that cat. Was my daughter's cat, she moved out, got married and we ended up with that damn cat. :shakes:
She said that her husband's dogs would kill it, so where's the problem?
I do not hate cats, had several, but this biatch with my luck will probably live to be 50 years old. :brick:
just upgraded my quad to XP64 so might see a bit more sustained output there.
We Put up an awesome last few days though i must say.
My computer is finally crunching again. Damned DFI board. Once it gets back from RMA, I should finally be able to set up my E6400 and a 5000+. Even cleared out a little space in the closet to hide the E6400 from my parents.
Living with parents sucks sometimes.
I have a little sneaky cruncher in my closet to :p: I have to watch out because my parents said so many times our power bill is really high and it won't take much before they say i have to be more careful with the electricity. Actually a friend of mine and fellow cruncher already got exposed and questioned by his parents. This is one heck of a tough cruel world.
Who's the smart arse that started the thread? Now they are beating us again, just like when we had the first thread.
