Watercooling Setup Failure! =(

Kindly help me iron things out...

im on the bleeding test last night, i slept at 2am, listening to the music with winamp in my pc, then i kinda notice that my room is so dark, which is supposed to be some blue and red lights in my room coming out from the case and my saitek 2, so i then woke up at 6:50 am and checked why i have no music and no lights (from the pc) i open the sidepanel then all the liquid in the res and all the tubes are gone, figured out that the hose from the inlet of my chipset block has been detached, coz, i didnt put the lock of my koolance 1/2 compression fittings coz it wont fit both of it, so the other one has and vice versa, i didnt expect that the hose will come out like this, because it is well fitted, and cannot be remove easily so i didnt bother to put other clamps that may do the job. (laziness)

now, the hard part is, that all the liquid flowed directly to my current 8800gt, the xfi is wet, same as the 2 120mm fans down in my rad, and lower part of the motherboard including the sata cables are also wet...

would you help me figure out, if there's any possible damage or parts that ill never have the chance to use again?

mobo?
processor?
xfi?
GFX Card?

???

Thanks

I would say it's in the computer gods hands. You have to let it dry out. Clean it up and test it.

I have had some leaks, not a major gush and most parts came back.

Best of luck!

make sure you clean the parts that got wet with some electrical cleaning solvent first,as water can leave a residue, then bang it in the airing cupboard for a good few days make sure its compleatly dry then try powering up again.
Hope its all ok.

Cheers,

Chris:)

Hey sorry to hear this. There is a possiblility that hardware died because of the water leaking. The best you can do now is take apart what you can and let it dry for a couple of days. You can always use a hairdryer to speed things up but better be safe and let it dry a bit longer.

The proc will prolly be allright. The other 3 are weaker because it has been in contact with the water.

How long have you tested it without turning on your pc self? ( testrun with paperclip in the psu for starting it and everything not needed uncoupled )

A other alternative for clips is to use ty raps there are allways some kind of sizes that will fit.

Good luck with it:up:

@systemviper

mobo
processor
gfx card
xfi

any guess which of these things are damaged?

i turn-on the pc after pouring coolant by 1am, then i grab my sleep by 2-230am, i woke up 6:50 am i dont know what time did the incident happen... im so down, when i saw my pc no more liquid in the res and all the hose/tubes... =(

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...mated/help.gif

put your parts on the back of your air conditioner for fast drying ;)

well i wish you luck getting things sorted out. I hate when my computer goes down but this should be a lesson.

None of us will be able to tell you if anything is damaged without seeing pictures or having the parts in hand. The only real way to find out is to dry them out completly, make sure they are clean and try to use them again...

Thats why we leak test.

Good luck, buddy.

a redneck once explained to me that all electrical components run because they have magic smoke in them. Once the magic smoke escapes, they will no longer work.

He was explaining this while I was replacing his large CRT monitor that ended up soaked when a leaky ceiling vent drained a bunch of water on his monitor. And he was right. Once the smoke started rolling out of that monitor, it never worked again.

what kind of liquid did you use in your loop ?

robf,
just LOL !
And the best that this is true :D

Strip every single component from your case. Ignore your mobo for now. Its the component that is most likely to be dead.

Dry off your gfx card and x-fi card fully. The air conditioner works. If you use the hairdryer, try not to use the high heat setting. After that, take rubbing alcohol and paper towels and clean your gfx card and xfi card properly to remove all residue. Those are likely much more expensive than the mobo anyway.

The cpu is not likely to be dead, unless the liquid went into the cpu socket and shorted out the pins. It depends on how much liquid we are talking about.

Dry off the mobo and say a prayer. Its the most finicky of all the components and don't hang on to much hope for your mobo.

I hope you still have all your air cooling heatsinks.

Take your time and good luck.

1- all parts must really dry: I'll wait up to 3 days in a warm room to be sure nothing is left, especially behind the heatsinks, back of MB, harddisks...
You could lough, but if you wat less, the risks are bigger. On plan surfaces it will dry in one day, depending on your ambiant temperature moisture, but not in small holes...

2- clean PCB and parts with pure isopropyl-alcohol to remove traces of cooling fluid depots, these traces could be conductive, especially on the CPU pins. I'll remove my MB and check the socket to be sure

3- take a deep breath, it could all work fine

But, all people here forgot to tell you something: your pump could be dead
If the short was immediate (often not), the pump would stopped and is safe. Is the short took few seconds/mn before it happens, or if it's the CPU too hot that shut down system: your pump is freash meet. Running a pump without load for a few seconds is deadly

I'd just correct few things:
No toilet paper pleaaaase, just a lint cloth free
About liquid quantity, the tubes got loose: so he lost all water I imagine :D
It should have been a Giser thing

Read my above post also for your pump that could be dead

The pump is gone, for sure.

ok

GFX card is Saved, it is working in fine condition...

next stop, xfi and mobo,

thanks for the help and advices, will keep you posted guys,,,

X-Fi.. I would bet its ok if the GFX is ok. I have never destroyed a Creative sound card before, and I have had quite a number of them, all the way since SB16 and AWE32.

WTF!

Pump? Cross Fingers... I hope its not, its better for me to have the mobo die rather than the pump, it takes too much tim to import one here...

thanks for calming me iany...

how bout my pump? whats ur bet? im afraid...

You see, the pump overheats quickly when there's no water flowing through it. Hopefully, your cpu temps freaked out so fast that the mobo shut down quickly.

What you have indicated is that your reservoir was empty, meaning that the pump was probably still pumping when all the fluid was out of your reservoir. That's not a good scenario. I know water cooling but I am not God. Your pump is in God's hands. The prognosis for your pump is not good, and I hope I AM WRONG!

On a more optimistic note, if your mobo freaked out and shut the system down quickly, then there may have been no damage to anything. Fluid may have spilled everywhere, but if ytour machine was powered down, then no damage can be done if you took everything out and dried every piece off.

I would say that if your video card is still good, then the chances are excellent that your sound card and your cpu are good. At least you know that the most expensive components are saved.

Just hang in there and you will get over this episode.

Confirmed

my cpu is still UP!

now three things left.

mobo
xfi
PUMP (i pray to god please don't take my pump) i dont wanna wait a very long time buying another pump... im in the Middle East at the moment... no available pumps in here, i have to get it from the US of A

is there any quick way to test if my pump is still up?

Hook a long section of tubing to the inlet port of the pump. Connect a short section of tubing to the outlet port of the pump. Fill the inlet tube completely with water. Some water will just flow through the pump out the outlet port, so try to prevent that. Start up the PSU and that will start up the pump.

Three scenarios: (1) pump doesn't start, which means the pump motor is completely dead, (2) pump starts but it is not pumping water rapidly, which means that there can be some bubble in the pump, or something may be defective, (3) pumpstarts up and water squirts out the outlet port rapidly with high pressure.

If it is scenario number 3, then celebrate because your pump is alive and well.

Stay focused and think only positive thoughts.

If it is scenario number 3, then celebrate because your pump is alive and well.

hahaha... yeah, i hope so... ill do that Iany... Thanks! =)

Fill your lavatory with water, take your PSU and turn it on with the pin trick ;)

That's pretty much what I'd say. Just connect some tubing to both inlet and outlet, give the inlet a source of water.....even a pitcher full or something like that would do.

Hook the pump up to the power supply (removed from your computer!) and short it on...jumping the green wire to any black wire in the 24-pin ATX motherboard power connector....paper clip works great for this.

If your pump is good, it'll start to work and pump out the water from your container. Turn off before container runs dry.....and be thankful. :)

Thats why we clamp every hose, everytime ;)

any 12V power source will work for your pump. you don't necessarily have to use your PCs psu.

run the pump from psu power with the paper clip trick. with the inlet tube in some water aim for a friend then fire. on i side note next fill up with non-conductive fluid. it costs about the same but more peace of mind.

you can short your psu with the pump hooked up. Just get a large tub and have a tube stuck in the water in the tub hooked up to the inlet of the pump so it can suck water through and have it shoot back into the tub.

lol...

Is there an echo in here?

i didnt see there was a page 2 and just did a quick reply heheh :)

A 9v battery will be enough to make the pump rotate the impeller for a short period of time.

If the impeller rotates its probably fine, dont do it for more than about 1 second though. Dont need any water this way (though you can pour some into the inlet if you want).

Remember, a compression fitting probably shouldn't be used with normal clamps like a zip tie or a worm drive clamp. You are going to want to buy a normal barb fitting to replace one of the ones on the block that cant fit 2 compression fittings side by side when they have their retainer rings on.

So don't just go hooking everything back up with a zip tie or 2 on one of the compression fittings, it may not hold long.

and, never run it empty, even for few seconds

Dissasamble your pump and let all the parts lay on your desk to dry. I had dozens of leaks before, even so bad my x850xtpe was all covered with rust and still worked for about 4 months then I sold it for like 100$ :D and the guy was so happy with it and still is.

So to give you some faith. It probably will work again if you let it all dry and clean it much as you can :) My 8800gts has a blue rusty spot too already, but it doesn't matter at all. If electronics get wet it doesn't mean a thing, only when the transistors on the top (where the cooler is) get wet (soaking wet I mean) then it can cause damage. Or if your pci slot has some water in it.
Give your XFI the same job as the pump / mobo. Just dissasamble all things and let it dry on your desk with a towel :)

cheers and good luck m8 I know how :banana::banana::banana:ed up it is.

Bastiaan

Oh! Sad to know... hope everything fine dude...

Guys, what would i do, i got the scenario 2? i think it is working but cannot suck water in high pressure...

also found out that there are bubbles inside...

Is it possible to get pump apart and try it then? Because it's moving a littlebit right? I think you should dissasamble the pump one time, make it proper and retry it. Can you do that or have you done that already?

@all

I Thank God for Allowing my pump to stay put... hahaa.. it is still up!! Wahoooo!!!

removed te hose and drained the pump, and blowing some air then tried it for the last time then it sucked water in very high pressure!!!

I Love You God!!!

Now this time use clamps on your barbs or properly use the compression fitting. :P

Read this thread with oohs and ahhs.... glad it all went well. Just off the kiss my worm clips. The Smoke thing made me laugh.... reminds me of my former engineering colleagues :)

Just curious, what type of coolant were you using? Distilled water?

Anyway, good luck, it looks like you will be able to save most if not all of it.

Don't know about you but distilled water only costs me about $1/gal @ Walgreens, compared to ~$12+/Qt for special fluids. Also, "non-conductives" are actually conductive resistant....not proof, they also don't stay "resistant" for any great period of time.

so did everything come out unscaved?

Still Up!

1. QX6850
2. Gfx Card
3. Pump
4. X-Fi

healing;;; and hope to be healed

1. Mobo

I used a PC Ice PrimoChill Non-Conductive w/Pentosin G11 UV Dye

keep up m8 ;)

I also would disassamble the pump. It's an easy thing to do. Just to check if the plastic/metallic parts are physically burnt/used by friction. Very strange that it didn't ran than it's running fine
Anyway, glad to see it's at least alive

Distilled water with some anti-alagae additive works great. If you want color use some food dye, but otherwise just use distilled water, just my opinion after reading everything here about coolants.

Utnorris

Is your mobo working again addidassler?

@dnb

At the moment, it is with my friend here in KSA, a shop of High-End PC Stuffs, i left it there, let it dry and we'll try to fire up in 2 days...

i got new mobo now... lol

I would of thought with as much money in your rig as urs you would of tacken every precaution...Its sad news mate. Hopefully you can dry out yur rig and it will still live.
