Actually Asrock has AGP boards with Conroe support, so theoretically you could run it @ acceptable level

This card will be a fine upgrade to many P4/A64 based systems. I'm sure there's still lot of users using good old s478 and nF3 stuff :)

My testrig has an Asrock mobo with AGP and PCI-E. So i run a GF mx440 AGP with a conroe lol :ROTF:

Last hurrah for AGP. I wonder how much the bus width is affecting performance at this level.

Considering the price premium these cards carry, you must REALLY want to keep hold of your existing AGP system to get one of these.

Dont know if you noticed, but there is a 8 pin power connector....I highly doubt someone with AGP based computer will have a psu with 8 pin adapter...

I still have an Asrock 775i65G with E6300 and AGP on a family use PC. This would be a nice update to the X800GTO PRO running in there now. I just don't know what kind of driver support to expect for this card. My X800 will not run with CCC over 7.9 :shrug:

Would go nice in my dad's aging Dell so he could play COD4 at some acceptable framerates.

If I can get this for him, Im sure he would pass on the replaced 9800Pro to me, and maybe I could frame it. :D

Power requirements?

AGP x8 will never be a bottleneck. There are lots of systems that could handle this card with ease.

It would draw close to 100W under load I guess, perhaps a bit less.

COD4 also requires a dual core CPU to run well, I would assume an ageing (I swear this is the correct spelling but Firefox says otherwise) AGP system would have a single core CPU... just keep that in mind...

Is it really worth it with hardware prices these days? you can make a dual core am2 system for like 400 dollars canadian. Also, im pretty sure it is aging (the "ing" takes out the vowel at the end if i remember my English correctly)

Also, I see measurable improvements from even overclocking my PCI-E bus. Even when I ran a geforce2 i got improvements from upping the AGP speed to 75mhz.

I remember my GF2 GTS running at 140Mhz AGP without even blinking :D
Had to because good old i440BX was missing AGP divider for higher than 100Mhz FSB ;)

All the people who wanted one of these I've talked to had Athlon XP systems, I told them to get a X1950pro instead as they would never see the difference :D

This could be understandable in a overclocked Athlon X2 system, but those are not too common with AGP either. BTW, any who would buy one of these would be no as much a "tardbucket" as those who bought a 7950GX2 for quad Sli on the eve of the G80.

what in the hell are you talking about? if you're talking about the latency hit and data coherency problems that limit expansion device support like a sound card working well on pci-e, thats a good point, but it in no way affects the video card, which primarily just needs bandwidth...

I fail to see the advantage for most keeping old CPU's and inferior RAM and duct tape and bubble gum a new GPU in there. A good system is about balance.

Give that old system away and buy a decent system, rather that having a franken-rig that just sucks alittle less than it did before. :shrug:

I like bottlenecking GPUs, like my PD820+8800GT combo? ;)

My son has a dying X800XTPE in his rig along with an FX-53/1GB Corsair and runs his virtual Trainz 2004 everyday. Maybe along with this card upgrade to 2GB ram and a Opty 186 (939) and his trains should run extremely smooth @ 1600x1200 on the Dell 2001fp. I don't think the Antec Trueblue 480 would be able to handle it all though. Might have to get another Corsair 520W modular.

It's cheaper than replacing the whole rig anyway.

I wouldn't bother if I were you. Your CPU and RAM will both be big bottlenecks. It makes no sense to match a modern GPU with such hardware.

A lot of the latest games require a dual core CPU and 2GB of RAM to run well.

Nowadays you can get a completely new platform for around $150, you can probably make half of that back by selling your old stuff on Ebay. That, plus the fact that PCI-E versions are cheaper than AGP, means you've hardly spent any extra, and got a completely up to date platform to boot.

how do you figure that? 400$ is the cheapest i can find for even a low end system and thats just the motherboard/cpu/video/ram...not including anything else.

HD3850 512mb=170bucks
Cheap Mobo=50 bucks...


I dont understand how you got 125 out of that, id rather not downgrade.

Since it's aimed at old systems you should use an old system but throw in 3850 512 AGP vs 3850 512 PCIE data from a Penryn just for a laugh and to see if 8x AGP is a bottle neck.

I wasn't including GPU price of course. I'm not from the States but there seems to be heaps of combo and MIR deals around, I guess you gotta know where to shop. Don't forget the AGP version of the HD3850 will probably carry a $50 premium as well.

The truth is that a single core A64 2.35GHz and 1GB RAM would run the latest games very poorly.

Look at Call of Duty 4 for example, it chokes with a single core A64 2.4GHz processor.

call of duty 4 runs amazingly well on my system, the only thing holding me back is my Radeon x1300pro..it does well in every game but crysis but I would like cod4 to run a lil faster.

At what settings and res do you play COD4 at?

COD4 has a 2.4GHz dual core CPU as a recommended requirement, I ain't making this stuff up you know. ;)

1280x1024 all max no AA or AF it runs fine but the hd3850 agp would be a big upgrade I am just not sure if it justifies the 200$ price.

Its funny though that 1gb of ram only loses 3 fps compared to 2gb of the same ram...

Just got done playing multiplayer and while looking at the sky my fps went up to 70 so why wouldnt I get 70 fps with a more powerfull card not looking at the sky? It proved to me my processor is powerfull enough to feed my card to up to 70fps in cod4..so what gives with the 29fps on that chart.

CPU limitation is one of those things people do not know how bad they had it till they step up to a faster system. I was blown as too how many games ran much much smoother and more enjoyably on my Q6600 than my Athlon X2(which had the same 8800GTX in it before I put it in my new system). Many times you will have FPS hits way lower that the benchmarks do not show, that a newer system would not.

But like a brand new monitor that makes an older look poor by comparison, most people do not truly realise it until its staring them in the face.

No, your CPU is NOT fast enough to maintain 70fps in COD4. Sorry.

Definitely for the SocketA crowd, the AXP 3200+ was legendary. I would get more RAM too though if you want the PC to deal with textures properly. :)

I find it very funny with your statement there, now granted you are right that looking at the sky almost nothign is being rendered, but my cpu was still running the game and was able to feed my video card 70 frames per second while looking at the sky, while my limitation is my graphics card what stopps my cpu from feeding the hd3850 70 frames per second when the load on it while playing is the saem as the load on my current card while looking at the sky?

People with quad core processors and crazy expensive computers always look down on peoples :banana::banana::banana::banana: like its something from 1975, this computer does everything i need it to right now except for run the newer games at max settings. Id love to have 2gigs of ram but ddr1 ram is so expensive its not worth the investment anymore and there is no point in buying "budget dual core systems" as they get bottlenecked by "budget graphic cards" like the hd3850...I know I wont see the max potential out of this card with my current set up but a review on newegg puts a P4 @ 3.4ghz to 5k in 3dmark06 with the card, now I just need to know how much better my cpu at 2.4ghz is compared to that p4 @ 3.4...then I can acess the performance id get, right now im barely pulling 1800 in '06 with this card.

while i dont have raw data, it's safe to say a good 30% of gamers out there still use AGP systems..

And the same 30% aren't playing the newest titles with proper framerates...

No no no, although AGP is only half the bandwidth of PCIe 16x, these interconnects are the only thing not holding these systems back. With the handful of Asrock Conroe AGP boards the could only account for 5%, however those and even decently overclockled a64 X2 agp systems are rare. What is wastefull that most of these cards will be going into ancient Athlon XP and Pentium 4 systems.

If only my A8V in my A64 X2 2.8ghz system hadn't died...

What do you concider to be a decently OC'ed A64 X2 system?

I'm thinking about getting one of these for my DFI nF3 Ultra-D (System in sig but the CPU, I got a X2 3600 yesterday).

Main reason for me to stick with my old AGP based system is that I already have a PCI-E based system and my old AGP system is worth **** these days.
If I'm lucky I'll get €150 orso (Payed ~€500 for MOBO, RAM, CPU and 6800LE), I'd rather keep it and use it as a HTPC that is able to play some games at low resolution (1024x768 orso) with decent FPS.
I just need to buy a decent PSU and see what my CPU can do, and maybe buy another gig of RAM or sell the current sticks and buy 2x 1GB.

Also, I was thinking about buying a HD2600XT but they're €75+ and the HD3850 is ~€130, sure almost twice as much but performance is also about twice as good, so why not inject my system with some steroids so it'll last me a few more years as a great HTPC that is able to play games pretty well?

An AMD workstation board with 4 cores around 2.8ghz might not be leading the pack, but it's not exacltly a slouch.

AGP is a limited market, but they're still producing PCI cards so I don't see what the surprise is over this one.

over the long term, its not a good investment. if everything is overclocked and stuff, how much longer can a cpu and mobo from 2003 live? then ur stuck with an agp graphics card and no board to put it in.
and if u do buy one, i hope you have at least a high clocked p4 with hyperthreading. 3850 isnt great, and will end up being a bottleneck in most newer games anyway, but cpu's like the athlonxp don't meet the minimum requirements for lotsa games.

My old media server has a Pentium 2.4C @ 3.0 Ghz and 2GB of BH-5 RAM @ 2-2-2-5. $200 really isn't much; I might throw this card in there (and replace the 7600 GT) just to see if I can squeeze a little more out of the old girl. :D

There is a profit to be made from AGP still, beilive it or not. Some boards still sold with AGP from OEM's, not many but some namely compaq, not to mention the po AGP gamer's out there

All depends on the rest of your machine...

On your 'Fold' machine, for instance, it would easy double the speeds over a 7600GT!

I know this from A/B benchmark comparisons I've read, between 7600GTs and HD3850 AGPs...

On a current generation mobo/processor/chipset with an AGP slot, the difference is even more dramatic! ;)
