I don't really get the whole physics ide in games.
I mean sure it will be easier for gpu to run the given physics instructions but other than that and a few % more FPS, what do you guys expect visually from this?
Game physics will always be exaggerated and over the top, cause unless you haven't noticed real world physics is not all that spectacular, but in fact life has rather boring special effects.:D (damn you gravity!:p: i want to release my kung-fu on the moon)

Sounds like it'll be a battle of deep pockets now. Now will Intel give enough money to developers to use Havok, or will NV pay more for them to use AGEIA?
But to be honest, I doubt physics will be mainstream until there's one common API for all the devs to use.
Don't forget Aureal, they used to beat the snot out of creative 10 years ago, until creative's "Creative" marketing took over, and left aureal to be bought out by nvidia :-PQuote:

Well, with Intels move and now the Green Guy's, we should be expecting physics as a very common native videocard features for NV cards(not just NV's, Intel too, soon) in the next years, DX11 i hope-yeah i know its a little bit early assumption... Right now i'm impressed with Crytek's own coding style for physics(on the software side)...

Your CPU of the future will be built like a cell processor anyhow with several specialized processors in a single package aimed at different markets and then augmented with your choice of video card(s). I see AMD in this market, I see Intel in this market, I see Nvidia getting locked out of anything that isn't a GPU. I think it was an attempt to stay in the game that will ultimately fail.
I really don't see how this changes the game at all. No one is buying PPUs, few if any games are using PPUs, and none of those games get much better with a PPU. Maybe NV will put a Ageia PPU on their cards directly. That is the only way I can see me getting one, by forcing me to buy one with a graphics card. Crysis has innovative physics that add to the game word by making it a more realistic experience, all without a PPU.
The only reason I can see for NV to buy Ageia is to get in on all those Dells equipped with a PPU.

I really don't see this taking off. You should be able to enable Ageia physics with a beefy CPU in GRAW 2. If all/most physic intense games that require a PPU can be played with a beefy CPU I really don't see the point. It's possible that we may see a PPU enabled video card however, it's also possible we will see dual core gpus and Nethalem by then as well. If so, it would make a PPU enabled video card solution a hard sell IMO.
You do see the point because no game utilities complex fluid and cloth physics. Because of a serious lack of power in todays hardware.
WHAT A WASTE!!!!! IMO this was a bad move for nvidia.

Considering NVIDIA needed a PCB as long as 3870X2's to make a single chip card (GTX and Ultra), and will need two PCBs in the 9800GTX for two chips, I doubt that they can add another chip maintaining a single PCB design.Quote:

That was pretty quick, as they completed the buyout 9 days after officially announcing it. I guess they must have been busy with it for quite some time or something.

I have a PPU card. And, I played GRAW2, using the setup in sig @ 1920x1200, settings maxed out.
It's gonna take some serious GPUs to do both physics acceleration and rendering at the same time. I mean, some of the physics acceleration in GRAW2 drags frames down drastically (even @ 1600x1200). As the physics in GRAW2 is mainly “effects physics” (and not “gameplay physics”), this drag must be GPU and not CPU related.
For the sake of argument: Try imagining any nVidia GPU running Crysis in DX10, HD, high graphics settings and calculating the physics acceleration of the game - at the same time. I think you get the picture by picture by picture by picture... frame rates :D
Contrary to what Anandtech writes and what has been indicated in various statements on the acquisition (including the press releases from nVidia), I still think we will see a PhysX technology implementation that goes beyond merely using the PhysX software on nVidia GPUs (combined with minor GPU architectural optimizations/improvements). Time will show…
On a side note: To judge from Ageia's US patent application, this acquisition is what they were hoping for, from the very beginning of their effort to bring real-time physics acceleration to 3D environments:
