Q4 2007 GPU shipments

4th quarter JPR GPU market numbers are up:

Comparing Q4 2007 to Q4 2006
- Global shipments grew 17.08% (106.37 million units overall).
- Nvidia grew shipments by 42.3%.
- Intel grew shipments by 40.2%.
- AMD grew shipments by 26.2%.


On the share front:

- Intel: 41.1% (up 3.7% from same quarter last year).
- Nvidia: 31.8%. (up 3.4% from same quarter last year).
- AMD: 22.8% (down 0.2% from same quarter last year).

Desktop:

- Intel: 37.7%.
- Nvidia: 37.1%.
- AMD: 19%.

Mobile:

- Intel: 47%.
- AMD: 29%.
- Nvidia: 22.8%.

Comparing Q3 2007 to Q4 2007:

Overall:

ATI grew from 19.1% -> 22.8% (up 3,7%)
Nvidia lost from 33.9% -> 31.8% (down 2,1%)
Intel grew from 38.0 -> 41.1% (up 3,1%)

Desktop:

ATI grew from 17.5% -> 19% (up 1,5%)
Nvidia lost from 37.8% -> 37.1% (down 0,7%)
Intel grew from 33.5 -> 37.7% (up 2,2%)

Mobile:

ATI grew from 23.4% -> 29% (up 6,4%)
Nvidia equal from 22.8% -> 22.8% (equal)
Intel lost from 50.9% -> 47% (down 3,9%)

Conclusions:
- ATI grew in every segments market share with strong mobile in Q4 compared to Q3 driven by HD 3800 series in desktop and a good mobile sector.

- Nvidia lost in overall and desktop (8800GT shortages). Mobile stay flat.

- Intel again king of the hill in every segments with good climb in desktop, but lost market in mobile to ATI.


For Q1 2008 Intel should have a strong quarter again.
AMD have a very strong lineup for this quarter (HD 3800X2, 3800,3600,3400) with mobile HD 3600 and 3400, RS780 all selling by now (RS780 only in china).
Nvidia delays in 9800gx2, 9600GT, 9500GT and 750a can hurt then this quarter.

I whoul say globaly Nvidia fall to sub < 30% market share, ATI go to 24-27% market share and Intel remain flat but again king of the hill in desktop and mobile.

I'm waiting for R700 before I become part of AMD's market share :yepp:

There can be surprises by Q1. It only depends how Nvidia Delays will hurt them sepecialy in mobile sector. The 55nm advantage in mobile are very important and HD 3400/HD 3600 mobile already started to ship to OEM in low quantities.

AMD will also potencialy grow in mobile with Puma plataform and spider in desktop.

as usual reply's .... ever seen nvidia and amd onboard grapics? put those next to the intel ones and you'll notice when doing vista usage, office work and some entertainment (small games/dvd....)

i actually like intel onboard... nice crisp picture for my Word and Excel, not mention my as400 sessions! best part is i never have to screw with drivers... makes for a nice stable working expirence... but no i would never bother in a gaming machine...

It's very hard to reconcile these numbers with the Revenue numbers we got straight from AMD (so we know they must be correct.) showing only a 3% increase in graphics revenue from Q3 2007 to Q4 2007.

Overall PC shipments certainly did not fall in Q4, they actually rose significantly. So therefore, either DAAMIT took a very large hit to its GPU ASPs or these numbers are completely bogus.

No matter how high or low the shipment value is the % is still %. Which means overall market shipment rise do not always relate to market share.

Also seeing as most companies are running Intel based PC's its not surprising that they are using their cheap motherboards with Intel IGP's. AMD hasnt really got much on that the Intel IGP section so none is looking for them, and nVidia is just much worse alternative then Intel IGP. So you cant really blame the IT Departments for going down the Intel GMA route.

I did. How many people actually need anything more than intel gma graphics in a laptop? It uses the least electricity meaning the battery lasts longer and they are dirt cheap.

Not everyone purchases a laptop as a desktop replacement machine.

Of course lets avoid countering any of my points and pretend that im a slave to intel marketing. if you genuinely believe that a discrete graphics card only saves you 5 mins out of a laptop with a 5 hour battery life, you are deluded. In addition, a mobile graphics card costs more adding $50 onto the cost of a laptop.

Let me count how many games ive actually played on my laptop......well i suppose theres solitaire. I also dont know what youd expect to play with an 8400gs if you went for it. Anything else and it starts to add substantially to the cost of the laptop which puts it inot the DTR category.

As for the centrino comment, i have no idea why youd even mention it.

Theres also the weight factor. It adds unnecessary weight.

Finally, if people buy intel on board graphics, it doesnt make them idiots. if ATI/nvidia discrete graphics were really needed in large quantities market forces would introduce them in larger quantities. if he would have done some research he would see that GMA X3500 and AMD G960 are pretty much on par performance wise. That doesn't mean they actually are good enough for gaming. :p:

if you want comprare the RS780 to an intel one wait for the next GMA in the G45 chipset, cause afaik both are slated for Q2 08. ;)

RS780 is selling now only in China. Not selling Europe and USA because hybrid crossfire Driver isn´t ready.
In 1 month those boards should be in Europe and USA.

well we'll see how the G45 compares to the RS780 when both are released.

btw. the G45 is rumored to be 70&#37; faster then the G35, and also should come with dx10 support out of the box.

And IGPs will still suck for gaming even with the RS780 or P45 or the the next nv igp.

I'm more interessted how both compare powerconsumption wise. Its intels 65nm vs tsmc 55nm process.

they didnt win any market share compared to last year
they actually lost market share but then managed to regain it and come out even compared to last year. thats what im referring to. the conclusion gives it a positive spin like ati is winning market share, when actually all they did was regain market share they had lost in the quarter(s) before.

but most of these notebooks will never face any video or games at all.

i think worldwide there are more notebooks used for business (e.g. using a notebook + dockingstation instead of a desktop pc) than for private uses.

at work me and a large number of our employees got a notebook + dockingstation (even though i got a desktop pc as well :p:)
why would you care about videos etc then? as long as office apps etc run like they're supposed to the costs of a nvidia/amd gpu (even if it's lowend) aren't worth it.

I disagree, while I play no games on my notebook, I do use it to watch movies while I travel in an airplane. The larger screen is much better suited to the half blind as I am, when you look around business class you see a lot of other guys doing the same thing, many catching up on sports games they missed and DL'ed off the TIVO is another example. Better graphics on laptops are used for things besides word processing.

And since when you make a yearly comparison when you have quarter by quarter comparisons?
It&#180;s a much more acurate info and you can analise market much better.

ATI in 1 quarter recover from losses of 3 quarters before, and Nvidia droped in 1 quarter from 3 awsome quarters before. In a year-year comparison you can&#180;t see these flutuations.

Say more than this is playing at fanboy wars. Also you still don&#180;t know read beacause ther is refered the comparison Q3 -> Q4 2007.
And yes ATI gained market share comparing Q3-> Q4, and this will let you "predict" the tendence of the market to Q1 2008. Nvidia finish 2007 going down and ATI finish 2007 going up.
Probably same will happen in Q1 2008 with this market tendency and Nvidia product delays.

unlikely since people going for hackintoshes are having to hack nV drivers for G80 and G92.

chances are the ol intel.

Can you elaborate what reviews? Currently no review seen said they are being sold anywhere.

So if you know they are being sold, can you atleast show it? We dont have much else to do than visit shops here. Since China is one big deepfreezer and almost everything stands still with 100000s of people waiting to get home for spring festival.

Yay, let's see when ATI recover money losses from 3 previous quarters in one quarter, that's what matter anyways. Apple has like 5% of the personal computing market and they make a crapload of money all year rounds, and I absolutely detest it >_>.

yes and no, as i said, from the conclusion they made it looks like ati grew a lot when they actually recovered from market share losses. which is great, the gains they achieved in one quarter are really good and i think they did a great job with the 3800 series... but you have to see things in perspective and the final conclusion here should be "ati managed to recover their market share within only one quarter" which is still good news. the conclusion they posted is making things look as good as possible, which is misleading and you shouldnt talk to your investors that way.

i never said quarter to quarter results dont matter... all i said was quarter to quarter isnt everything and was surprised that the conclusion of the numbers was based ONLY on the q to q results and not y to y + q to q.
