Can anyone prove an 8hr Orthos Screenie of 4.5ghz on air with a retail E8400?

edit: does anyone have a 4.2,4.3, or 4.4 Screen shot of 8hrs prime on air?

a lot of people doubt this and say that even though the e8400 will do suicide benches at 5 or 6ghz, that it is only capable of approx 4.2ghz prime stability.

can anyone disprove this with a screenshot of occt orthos prime etc with an 8 hour duration with a cpu speed of 4500mhz on air. I'm in a heated arguement via private messages that this is possible, yet can't find any proof.

I'm convinced i could do it on my system (e8400/ultra 120), but my supertalent pc2-6400 800mhz ram wont OC over 890mhz and stay prime stable ( i dont really know how to relax the timings correctly)

the best i can prime stable at is around 4190mhz but, i think i could do better with some good Pc2-8500 ram

anyone wanna help me out with that screenshot?

seriously dude give up already. how many people have to tell you that you wont see 45nm do 4.5 ghz prime stable? its not going to happen, not right now at least. maybe with another core revision, like G0 did to B3 but not with C0.

And even if you do by fluke find a chip thats stable at 4.5 ghz, remember that 45nm are not meant to take more than 1.45v, anyone using more than that to achieve 4.5 ghz prime stability will lose their chip eventually.

1.45v at 45nm is the equivalent of 1.55v at 65nm, and thats the borderline between safe and seriously wearing your cpu out. Stop drool-dreaming of 4.5 ghz prime stable. It ain't happening if you want your chip to last until nehalem at least...

yeah definitly belongs to intel section, anyway it is quite a task 4.5 ghz air on 8400...4ghz is normal, 4.1 is good, 4.2 is very good, 4.3 VERY VERY good....everything above is just exceptional and a very good chip.

Honestly, I'm just as curious on this. Getting it doing Super PI doesn't mean anything except for good numbers. We're spending this much of cash to get a Super PI screenie 9 secs but not getting to enjoy the speed?

4.5Ghz Orthos stable for 2 hours is good enough to prove something. I wouldn't have spend on this chip if I knew it doesn't do stable at 4.3Ghz (at least) with a reasonable voltage.

The reviews are terribly misleading at the first place.

well, so far I can get my qx9650 to complete spi runs at 4.5 gHz, but as far as 8 hours of prime, that's been a max of 4125 so far....

You can run a super-pi at almost suicide clocks nowadays...

Yes, that's the problem. Everyone's posting a Super PI screenshot and what if it does Super PI @ 8Ghz?! It's just a number and screenie, nothing else.

I guess we should be more practical and see what's a stable OC that we can use daily thus able to enjoy that kind of Mhz and speed :D

Well honestly noone will be taking this chance. Temps are already so high on 4.2 and 4.3 ghz that i cant even thing of 24x7 setup for anything higher.
I am running 4274Mhz 24x7 on air and already i am touching 70C while priming.
When i tried to run prime at 4.5Ghz temps went beyond 75 in no time at all and i manually stopped it.
If you are funding for a chip then i will do 4.5Ghz prime a shot :P

so far i passed Dual Super PI 32MB @ 4.5ghz with 1.45v, 3dmark06 and 05, but everytime i run orthos or prime95 it will crash instantly, i am still trying to find out what causing the problem.

I did a few hours of prime 95 at 4.5 (9 x 500) with 1.5 volts.
but honestly, I was not confident about using 1.5 daily, so I backed down alot.

4.06 at 1.34 volts.

4320Mhz 1 hour + Prime.

I can get around 4.42 Ghz fairly stable but past that is a no-go. I was all gung ho for 4.6+ Ghz with the voltage ramp I was seeing but nothing I can do will get me there. Gonna try on the P5K P next week but I would say that if the DFI cant do it, no P35 can.

It's a known issue and the temps shown are incorrect. Some people changed from air to water and the temps report the same. It's not running that hot and we just have to wait until the mobo manufacturers or core temp comes up with a fix.

The E8400 isn't that overclockable after all - it's so hard to get it stable pass 4Ghz. I think 4.2-4.3 is the best we can do with normal acceptable cooling (air/water).

Lol, 4.5GHz Prime/orthos is possible on good air and something like 1.5-1.6V. It just might be too much for 45nm 24/7, nobody knows yet

I'm happy with 2 hours of dual orthos on my chips. Can't wait for my e8400 though.

It's much more useful then to look at a thread full of people running 4.5+ with superpi runs.. it's one of the more annoying things about this forum.. who cares about suicide shots.. prime stable clocks are really all that matters.. and to that end, I think I'm going to keep my q6600 which is prime stable at 3.6.. not worth it to upgrade to a chip with less cores when it's only going to net 500 mhz plus a minor improvement of 5% because of cache, SSE, etc...

by the time I would notice any bottleneck making the switch applications will be using the 4 cores anyways.

well i tried for myself, since i'm very annoyed by q6600 owners telling me how great their chips are and recommending them to people over e8400's when they come asking for the best cpu for gaming when overclocking....

i did 4500mhz on air, but prime doesnt last longer than 1hour 20 mins and usually crashes between 1 min and 15 mins

All you did was SETFSB from a lower speed.

You need to set the speed originally to be actually stable at that speed.

You did look at my sig, did'nt you ? Running phase, i have only just started this clock. As it happens my mobo has NO vdroop (not untill about 1.6v anyway). My vcore is as in the screenie, 1.488v.

With phase you will always get about 300-400 mhz more than air or water, and you can also push a bit more voltage without having to worry about temperatures. Not that it's safe, but there will be no degradation due to heat, so your processor life will be significantly longer than if you were running 1.5v on air. A good general rule is +15% vcore for air/water, and +25% vcore for phase. But just FYI kitfit, the OP is interested in air/water capabilities, I dont think the OP is interested in phase results since he doesn't have sub zero cooling.

Using phase is cheating. :P

4.0-4.2Ghz is more realistic on water/air for 24/7.

Remove the IHS then you can get 4.5ghz 24/7 on air/water :)

4.5GHz stable on watercooling is not impossible, just very difficult. ;)

This is what I'm running 24/7, even if the chip does die in 6-8 months, it was only $220, no big deal.

CPU-Z voltage is wrong, I might do 8 hours prime later but theres not much point, I've been gaming with this for 3 days now and haven't had a crash.

If a manufacturer's specifications are going to be quoted they should not be done so out of context. Your statement gives the impression that Intel is setting 1.45V as a safe operating limit. The point is that, 1.25v and below you are in the green zone, 1.45v and below you are in the yellow zone, anything above 1.45v you are in the red zone. Green zone = way more than its useful lifetime, yellow zone = enough to outlive its useful lifetime, red zone = might make it, might not.

I have 11 120mm S-Flexs, 2x120mm rads, 1x240mm rad - all in push-pull configs with window cracked in cold Michigan.

Still, its pretty widely reported that core temperature readings on 8000 series are borked, theres a thread about it in the news section.

My core temps are stuck at 38c all the time, CPU temp in asus software is the only one i can get a reading from, and its 50c @ only 1.44v. With 9 fans and only the cpu in the loop, guarenteed my cores are probably 60-65.

try doing that at proper 25C ambients with your case under the desk closed and all....hell that's what prime is for right....finding stability for your 24/7 rig for benching i never use prime.....nature in '01 and '03 is enough to give me a rough idea where i'm at

this thread is about a retail CPU doing 4.5GHz prime on air (not subzero air) but your normal room temp air. So why do you come in and pretend it's a super chip when in fact it isn't. You CPU is nice though no question about it but geeez mate show the guy what the CPU can do on air or your water rig in normal 25C ambient it would be in and i'm 10000% sure it will not do those clocks....you will probably have to drop it down a couple of hundred MHz :shrug:

I have to agree. I have heavy water (Fuzion/HE 120.3 w 6 fans and shrouds/DDC2 topped) on a dedicated loop, with sub 20c ambients and at 4.3Ghz (1.4v) I get mid 60's centrigrade. This is with multiple mounts and MX-2 TIM and everything else I can think of.

Agree dinno,i noticed alot of cpu's clocked hi.....But you see no temp program in ss.Over clockin is only about 2 things.Quality components and heat removal.

Plenty of peps doing that(window shut).Im intrested in max stable prime, acouple of hours regardless of cooling method.Any one doing 4.5(prime) on air is either open window or very deep into temp max.

Besides, "Air" is very subjective because not all "air" temps are the same. Plenty people do "air" with PC in front of their AC units. :rolleyes:

Notice those voltages for those clocks? I only needed 1.536v (1.550v set in bios) to prime @ 4.6Ghz. Besides, doesn't it take some prepping to bench at sub-zero temps? Gah!

Its nice to see all kinds of oc, be it air, water and other. But when someone shows of their cpu, its always nice to know what kind of cooling they used, or else it is kind of pointless. Claiming normal room temp when rad gets cold air from window or other sources is not nice, even though the temps where you are sitting is warm enough.
Try to put less ego into it, its just a cpu.

I know what the problem is!! Your CPU is unstable at 4.5GHz and 1.45V. :ROTF: 3DMark scores really mean "SQUAT!!!!" in terms of stability. Because even if your CPU is making massively huge calculation errors on 3DMark it may may only manifest itself in ways such as rendering a pixel in the wrong color. Yet the program will finish no problem. You will never notice that every 5th pixel is being rendered in the wrong shade of green.

I put much more faith in programs like prime and such that actually make long string calculations that are checked at the end for accuracy. But at the end of the day what really matters is if your data integrety lasts for months. You can pass every benchmark and prime number but if you comp is crashing periodically (every 3 - 6 months) or you are finding that you are losing pictures of your kids that you have saved in "my pictures" then that is the true test of stability.

Not trying to get all weepy or even Existential but I had a comp that would pass ANY benchmark you tossed it yet every 3-4 months or soo it would crash unexplicably and I was finding that files were coming up corrupt. I first thought virus but to this day I have never been able to find any correlation between ant virus and system crashings. I resolved myself the the fact that it was probably the defrag while OC'ed was causing errors that no other programs caught. Could still be wrong theough. I almost lost my kids entire set of 1st birthday pics due to a system crash. Luckily for me I have learned from the past an I make several backups... and I do it often!!! phhew... the wife was not happy for a few days until I produced proff positive that I in fact did have all the pics restored....

i was testing my new X38 board yesterday and did some quick 10 minute prime jumps to see where my chip is at

basically 4.4GHz 1.44-1.45v on water at NORMAL 25C ambient :p:
load temps around 61C

i am anticipating further 100MHz jumps with 0.05v added to vcore so it can be done but very stupid IMO as this vcore is getting too high for 24/7

I am so eager to see ANYONE pass Linpack64 benchmark on new 45nm CPUs. Both for benchmark results, to compare efficiency of new 45nm Core2 with previous 65nm one, and to see how far it will go under REALLY stressing test.

I downloaded linpack64 a couple days ago. That program is very inefficient at finding unstable overclocks. You have to run it once for long enough to get an error (but you have no idea length run needed). Then run it again and compare results to see if there was an error. You get no clue as to ram or cpu, or how far off you are. And since it does not notify right when error occurs, you could run it for hours needlessly, when orthos or prime would notify you right away.

IMO, it is piss poor at efficiency and thus worthless for overclock testing.

If you want to argue that after you find your stable overclock with orthos, you could find out if it is even more stable by running linpack64, then first you would have to demonstrate a need, and second prove that its better.

If my system is orthos stable on both small ffts 8-64 and on large ffts or blend, both for 15 hrs, I have never had a system crash or instability problem. Therefore there is no need for a better program than orthos or prime for my desktop. And second, you haven't even proved that it does a better job of finding instability, even though its a worthless endeavor even if it did.

If there is more to linpack64, and an efficient way to help with stability testing, please educate me, I am all ears. Until you have shown me that, I will go on thinking you are selling something or smoking something.

I was looking at the numbers and the overclock scaling seems to be the same on 45nm and 65nm. For instance, on E6600, the average orthos stable is 3.6 (that's 1.2ghz OC) Now on E8400, most seem to get stable around 4.3 which turns out to be 1.3ghz OC. So actually 4.3 orthos stable is quite good and to expect 4.5 is a little bit unrealistic IMO; especially on air/water.

In fact when Conroe first came out, not many people were able to hit 3.6 in those first few batches. And the ones that did hit those on air/water needed high amount of vcore. Not until the "B" stepping came and eventually GO that it became the standard orthos stable clock. So for Wolfdale first few batches to slightly beat Conroe in overclock is pretty damn impressive IMO. I think down the road 4.5 orthos stable would be possible with better revision. But for now I'm pretty happy with Wolfdale and it can only get better. :)

Yep, I like OCCT and use it for quick runs as well. But thanks, that is a helpful program.

I was having problems couple days ago pinpointing a problem, til I ran memtest and my ram is bad...errors no matter settings...have some crucial pc8500 on the way, and will rma mine then for backup use.

I had downloaded linpack64 after hearing the same person tell how great it was...what a waste of time.

Wish I could earn as fast and as much as you guys. :D

$220 take me a least a month or two to earn. :(

See the thread on proper Linpack testing, i posted the detailed instruction on how to use it.
There is no way with any test to tell how much time it will take to find an error.

I had a system built around an E6600 L629B a while back that was Prime95 stable while looping 3DMark03 in the back ground. 12hours + at 3.71GHz using 1.42vcore. However, when I loaded up UT2004 and started playing it would crash within 10 minutes. Hence I do not put a lot of faith in P95 or orthos, especially with the latest CPUs.

Not to mention that clock for clock the wolfdales blow the conroe away

Maybe it was something else - heat?
Orthos is good for multi-cores so use that instead of Prime95.

I read it. I followed it. You are missing the point. I run orthos, and it crashes in 8 minutes. So within 8 minutes, I know I am unstable. I dont have to guess how big of a run to make or spend two or three hours running linpack once, then again and comparing the two.

Plus, if I crash in 8 minutes on orthos, I know to go up a couple notches, because I crashed quickly. Linpack, you would still be running the second run to compare the two, and have no idea about anything other than some errors occured.

The program is worthless for finding a stable OC.

Again, the only potential use would be trying to find any unstability left over after a successful 12+ orthos run, and not only is that worthless even if possible, but you have absolutely no evidence it would be any better at finding an error.

Not heat..custom WC system that would keep a hot running L629B E6600 at 55C under load at 1.45vcore. I just needed more vcore to keep the game stable.

Ok, how do you know it was a hard drive about to go kaput?
Or a less than great SATA cable (had loads of them)?
A problem with your memory? (only memtest imo can be trusted for that for absolute 100%)
How do you know your setup did not degrade?

can we qualify this a little

are you talking about closed case, reasonable ambient say 22-26C, medium fan speed so that you don't have to use ear plugs right

i will go right out and say that is not possible from what i've seen with current CPUs.......if it is possible it is REALLY rare man

I'd say my overclock would be doable 24/7 on air. Although how long the chip would last is another matter entirely. Basically, 4.5ghz is definitly possible on air, but you'd have to pretty much be ready to settle for a lifespan of a few months or less.

I guess for enthusiasts like us, we'll never get to use the processor until the end of it's lifespan. The upgrade never ends :D

Don't worry about absolute end of it's lifespan, what you got to worry about is degradation and that can happen easier and easier (if you're not careful) with modern cpus. It was not so much of a worry for eg 130nm parts.

Honestly, I normally don't get to use that CPU for a year. There are always new chips and I kept on changing cos I enjoy overclocking. I guess it's ok as long as the setting could stay for about a year before it degrades.
