AMD RS780 is 261% Faster Than AMD 690G in 3DMark06

Today, AMD announces the AMD RS780 chipset in China. We have got hold of a unit and doing a review of it. At the mean time, we have discovered amazing benchmark results.

Using an AMD ATHLONX2 5000+, 2GB DDR2-800 Corsair memory. We test run 3Dmark05, 3Dmark06 and FEAR under VISTA Ultimate using the integrated graphics on a 690G board and RS780 board.

Here are the results :

3DMARK05 @690G=1105, @RS780=2495
Vista Experience Index @690G=3.1, @RS780=3.5
FEAR DEMO @690=15FPS, @RS780=29FPS
3DMARK 06 @690G : score=321, SM2:147, HDR/SM3=0, CPU score = 1860
3DMARK 06 @RS780: Score=1162, SM2:380, HDR/SM3=441, CPU score 1869

In terms of 3D graphics performance, AMD RS780 is 2x faster than AMD 690G. In 3Dmark06, the difference is shocking, 1162 vs 321. That is 3.6X difference.

Thats a pretty bad test. Remove 3Dmark06 since one cant do Sm3.0....

Else it looks nice I guess. About 2x performance. But I think thats quite the norm.

Pretty cool, actually. That with Hybrid Crossfire just might make some use for those IGP:s, if not, it'd still make a decent HTPC.

yah man. Hybird Xfire. u can use any combination of ATI cards together. the drivers will channel the physics to the weaker card. i.e. 3870x2 with 3870, x2 for video and 3870 for physics.....from what i understand:)

Thanks to Intel that's not gonna happen. When they bought Havok they canned the GPU physics SDK that both nVidia & AMD needed.

not bad at all for an IGP. This nothing fantastic, but good to know things are progressing nicely.

very cool. finaly an IGP that has its OWN ram. So long as the SB had both DVI and VGA or a DVI port with the VGA channels (as most do) this would be a great chipset to build low end machines from.

HDMI & DVI by the looks of that motherboard in the review. SB700 is another boon for it.

Its DX_10.1/SM4.1, DVI/HDMI, PCI-E 2.0, UVD in the IGP, Hybrid Crossfire, SB700 and 64mb of 2.0ns ram conectd to the IGP.

Far away the best IGP board ever made.
And they also support Hyperflash that is the same that Intel uses in Santa Rosa - the Intel robson 512mb/1gb.
The hyperflash module will be used in te mobile version of RS780.

If you switch that 64mb 2.0ns for a 128mb chip you will get awsome performance for a stupid low price. You will get exact same performance as HD 3400 if they put there 128mb chip.
Another motherboard makers can put the ram chip that they want.

This RS780 can have multiple choices: SB600/SB700; Integrate ram into the board or not; Hyperflash or not;
There will be lots of versions.

I think its an feature that switches your discrete card, when its idle, to the onboard one, on the fly. It turns your VGA(s) off, to save power, since the integrated one has very low power consumption.

I dont know about combining them or using the onboard one for physics.

Which means notebooks with powerful graphics, but battery life like it isn't even there (non-3D). Very cool :cool:

They just need to get a chipset into a notebook to start.

Damn, this chip is going to make a kick ass HTPC :) and hybrid crossfire is pushing down the cost of low end gaming... take that Nvidia..I love competition. When there is some.

It should also be noted that the RS780 is supposed to have UVD, so you may want to include it in your test.

For you that don´t remember, 690G uses the same chip as x700/x1250, which in my head was almost as flawed as the nV FX series. Mind you I´ve owned both.

x700 was great in notebooks.

with powerplay nearly same power consumption like intel gma but enough power for even most newer games at low-middle details.

I had a FX5200--sad thing is the IGP would absolutely own that... plus I had 128MB DDR and the damn thing took a nose-dive in any gaming. I'm happy IGP's are getting some 3D performance... it should help to be a new driving force in PC gaming.

I don't understand why ppl so exited about integrated graphics. For the last two ears I'm using Gigabyte 7600GS Silent Pipe in my HTPC. And even two ears later it is still a way faster and better solution for Home Theater then a new RS780.

I see 20-40% CPU utilization on my crappy (not overclocked) E2140. NVidia says it has hardware decode acceleration for H.264, MPEG2 and WMV9.

(You mean years, excited, then, etc, right? Cause if it's two ears later - then
does it matter how loud it is at all? :D )

For a HTPC this would be
1.) cheap
2.) low power consumption ->
3.) low heat dissipation ->
4.) quiet
5.) space-saving (your 7600 needs over a full-height PCI-slot, right?)

Also, if the lowest member in a hierarchy steps up to a next level, then the
ones above have to get better, too.
So what's not to like about this news? :)

Awesome! If the UVD on this thing is up to snuff, I'd barely need a CPU in the HTPC at all:D

That depends on the memory controller in the IGP, it might only be capable of DDR/DDR2. 128MB would be nice but I don't think it'll get much of a improvment over the 64MB version.

X700 fixed X600 which was utter garbage. Still not as good as the 6600GT GDDR3 though.

Not quite...

It was only equipped with a 128bit memory bus and was DX9b, compared to the 256bit DX9.0 R300. They weren't the same chip. It was pretty equal in speed, but with the fact that it was facing the much better 6600gt most considered it pretty weak. :(

x700xt was only like 20&#37; behind and with AA it was even smaller difference.

That's like calling 3870 pretty weak compared to "much better" 8800gt.

FX60, 1GB DDR400 - up to 2700 in 06 for the 7300GT (GDDR3 model). The RS780 is halfway between the X1300 Pro & X1300XT GDDR3 but with much better Video Decoding than all the aforementioned cards.

That's pretty good, at least an improvement. Something I'm after for 45W edition in HTPC usage. I've been waiting long enough now. :)

The most significant thing to me will be those boards utilising the dedicated memory, that really is a killer still with current IGPs.. even driving the Vista Aero interface for example, or other progs using D3D will suck mem bandwidth away from the CPU and slow down the rest of your system if you're multitasking.. this would spell an end to that hopefully :yepp:

Well actually only 7300GS is the real budget Card based on G72. 7300GT is actually based on the 12pipe G73 chip with 4 deactivated, what makes still 8 pipes. Far from a Budget Card, its a mainstreampart, sometimes even faster than lower clocked 7600GS.
They brought the GT as a interim Solution because of strong competition from the x1300pro and xt. but its not a card to make money with since g73 is a expensive mainstreamchip not meant for low end.
U could compare the integrated graphics with G72, but since this has only 4 pipes like 6200 and not 8 like 7300GT ist useless as it will loose out to almost anything.


RS780 is a nice Chipset and it looks a lot smaller than MCP78. Thats a huge plus for AMD since it means its also cheaper for them. I guess that the dedicated Ram feature is pretty good for oems, especially in notebooks as you can build nearly the same sku with or without ram.

From the ocworkbenchtests i conclude that Ram performance with integrated graphics activated is way up. So the GPU doesn't suck much from the system ram, maybe there is some limitation fpor the bandwith which is dedicated to the GPU.

Also the ram interface is really lowcost only 32 bit. thats half of the ultralowend 2400pro. It doesn't take up much transistors or heat, so its not that bad if u don't use it.
AMD uses a mechanism to dedicate 32bit of the main Ram bandwith to the graphics and the 32bit onboard memory doubles that to 64bit (2 channels wide). Thats the same as on a 2400pro. Also if u got 64mb onboard u have a full of 128mb 64 bit graphics ram. If u solder 128mb on the board u already have 256mb which should be more than enough for the power the chip has. U don't need more since the Chip doesn't handel higher tecture grades.

I bet notebook manufacturers will love this Chipset. Now AMD should hurry with its griffin and they have a good team. If they can't defeat Intel in the highend wuadcore market they need to fight where it hurts Intel the most - in the Notebook space. But since 45nm CPUs will also come to the MObile Front, Griffin needs to be a heck of a mobile CPU to stand up against that. I don't expect better performance on that segmewnt, but they should at least deliver better performance per watt with griffin. (chipset+gpu included)

With the overclocking capabilities that this chip7 offers easly it breaks an HD 2400Pro, and this is not even the top model because it only has HD 3200 in it.
The Top model -> RS780D will have an HD 3300 IGP and sideport from 64Mb to 128Mb.
