Retail E8400 @ 4.8Ghz Sub 10s SPi 1M

Ok, second thread in two days, but you don't get these results everyday. This chip is a monster, only thing holding me back from a 5Ghz is ram. :( All settings were set in bios, no clockgening.

Testbed:
Mobo: Asus Maximus Formula (0907 bios)
CPU: Intel E8400 (Retail)
Batch #s: Q745A356
RAM: Team Xtreem PC2 6400 4-4-4-10
Cooling: TT Bigwater 745 + Apogee GT WB
OS: Windows Server 2003 SP2

SPi 1M was run at 4.797 with ram timings of 5-6-6-21-3-42-6-3-8-3-5-4-6-4-6 2.4v

I took a screenie at 4.811 Ghz (9x534.5) but I just realized that file was corrupt when trying to upload it. Also, the first SPi 1M ran was 9.625s but system crashed while saving it.

if your ram is doing 630 something, and your FSB is only 533, then I would say the ram isnt holding you back.

you just need to change to 1:1.

Let it run overnight at 1.536v and test for us if the cpu will survive that voltage. ;)

Batch #s: Q745A356 - Reading is fundamental. It's right in the first post. And it's not the stepping it's the batch code. These are all 6 Stepping with the C0 Revision. ;)

First of all, that is DDR2 800 rated/binned ram doing 1280, second, I had issues booting 1:1 on the 333 strap past DDR2 1000 at 500 fsb.

Awesome CPU, now pump some more voltage into your RAM if you have a fan over them.

Wow that is a golden chip for sure, so far I have seen no signs of retails doing any worse than ES, rather the opposite. :p:

I really really wish they were in stock also over here, I can't wait any longer. :(

PS, I'm liking those numbers in the Everest mem bench. :)

RAM isn't holding you back

basically the CPU is maxing out there

i've got similar chip to yours that can prime with slightly less vcore as same clocks and i could only get 4.7GHz 8M SuperPi from a quick 1 hour bench session and around 4.9x validation. my ambients were around 26-27C from memory

when you stick it on something colder you'll be able to do some easy 5ghz+ benches

i'm FSB limited on 9xmulti (half multies not functioning atm) so highest benches were at 5.22GHz so far

who cares what its rated for...
ratings mean nothing in overclocking.

and if you have troubles booting at 1:1, you might say the board was the problem, not the ram.

you wanna get pissy with someone, you might want to pick your fight elsewhere, cause I'm not easily fooled, I aint a noob, and I do look at the details and question things.

If you were having troubles with the board, maybe you should have said that instead.

I care what it's rated for; it means I'm not trying to kill my ram, I'm going to push to MY comfort levels. Or may be I should give it 2.6v - 3.0v for 1500mhz and kill it? I know the peculiarities of this ram with this board, so save me the arm-chair quarter-backing.

I haven't tried any serious stability testing yet. I'm planning to run 4.2Ghz for everyday with 1.3125v

Not trying to kill the ram, but taking the fast lane to a fried cpu?

I applaude you on your clocking here, but you need to reserve your hostility towards Kunaak, as its not warranted.

that wasnt the point at all.

what I said, was if your rams not doing 1:1, then its a MB issue. not Ram.
the rating of the ram has nothing to do with it, but whats in the ram chips itself.

man, how you got hardware this far, and dont know things like that just amazes me.

If you are having problems booting at 1:1 over 500FSB how about booting below 500 1:1 and then raising it with software within windows? Have you tried this?

I think it may be your cpu, but until you do something like that you will not know for sure.

You are assuming that if my ram can ran 1280 @ 5:6, then it should do 1280 @ 1:1. I said earlier that my ram displays this weird behaviour (based on testing with other rams). Another assumption, or plain rudeness, but that is fine. I don't claim to be as good as you or even a midrange overclocker. What I know however, is that I took my retail E8400 to 4.86 Ghz, cpu-z validated, on water. Period.

Zuker2k is right. i ran into the same thing. memory wont run past 520-ish 1:1 well mine atleast. thats way too fast for most of todays chips. dont confuse frequency with this issue. the ram may run at a different divier at 1300mhz but wont keep up at 1:1 thats way too fast for the ram to keep up. like he said you have to have done it to understand. you just cant assume. same thing with cpu voltages depending on the divider you are running the chip may run at lover vcore but when running memory dividers in the current fsb strap cpu need more juice. speciall 1:1.....

so Zuker2k thanks for the share great work. may i ask what your temps are like in the 4.8 - 5ghz range?

Never done 5ghz yet, board is not cooperating. I suspect my rams tho - they run very well for PC 6400 rated rams but they have limiits - especially since I don't want to give them more than 2.5v and fry them. My temps around 4.8ghz (with windows open (about 22C ambient) is around 34-38 idle. Can't say what full load is since I've never stressed the cpus at that speed.

zucker2k, whats the highest primed you have got so far. am currently priming 4.25ghz(8.5x 500, 1.425vcore, nb=1.65, ram @ 1200 @ 5-5-5-5-3-35-6-3 @ 2.4).....

i had cpu ppl at auto,fsbt at auto,sb auto and my system just reboot a few minutes past 8hrs small fft prime95. was advised to change ppl to 1.54 and fsbt to 1.5 am priming to see how that goes. 6 hrs so far. am using maximus formula with bios 907 and crucial ballistix tracers 1066. what would you recommend to tweak voltages so its more stable. am aiming for lower vcore but stable and aim higher frequencies. i want to stick with 500fsb or a little more. if too high my nb will need too much voltage and thats going to warm up the water cooling loop.

my temps! @ 1.425vcore, 1.65nb, 1.18sb
cpu & nb on a swiftech 220 water cooling loop.(4x sythe 1500rpm fans...2 each side of rad)
cpu = 55-58 load
cores=60,60(load) - (38 idle)
nb = 38 to 40
sb = 32 to 35

first time i primed i set 1.63v northbridge and system blackscreened after 6hrs. upped to 1.65 and reboot after 8hrs. do you know how to tweak these fsbt and ppl and gtl settings?

am loving the memory bandwidth tho. @ 500fsb and 1200mhz @ 5-5-5-5-3-35-6-3 am getting 9680mb/s in sandra

Looks like you're on your way there buddy :up: From my own experience, cpupll is key to avoiding problems on maximus formula and my E8400. My cpupll voltage is set to 1.50v, yes 1.50v for all my overclocks including the 4.9Ghz overclock.

The only things I can suggest is to

1. loosen your timings a little bit to eliminate rams as a problem.
2. set nb to 1.67v
3. set sb to 1.100v
4. Set fsbt to 1.54v.
5. set both cpu/nb gtl volts to auto.
6. enable loadline calibration
7. set sb 1.5v to 1.70v

Hope this helps.

i tested the ram and it passed prime. its when i upped the cpu multiplier that she acted up but those settings i posted passed 10hrs small ffts. will aim higher today and when i find a sweet spot(high clock vs temps) i will prime 24hrs. but thats... if i loosen timings i get reboots. they want to be tightened to work at this speed.

Thought as much. These new cpus are doing faster cycle times... rams have to keep pace.
