Asus P5E-VM HDMI

I bought this mb to use with an 8500 when they come out. I got bored waiting for the cpu so I picked up a Q6600 L737A to play with. I don't want a quad or want to run one all the time even though I've had a few.

I used Vista 64-bit and used the onboard video. To my suprise it booted and ran spi 1m at 4000 MHz. I don't know if I'm more impressed with the mb running onboard video at 445fsb or the cpu booting in Windows at 4.0 on a micro mb.

The micro boards just keep getting better at oc'ing with each new chipset.

The cooling is a TR 120 Ultra.

I've been looking at this board to replace the P5K-VM I've been using. I too would be using onboard video. I mostly just hate the lack of ps2 legacy device support on the P5K-VM otherwise its been an outstanding board as well. HDMI under vista is still not supported due to no available drivers from intel right?

i'm really interested in this mobo for my upcoming HTPC build... keep reading good things about it.

This little mb is really good. I like it a lot. I will keep pushing it to see just how good. Got lucky on the cpu too.:D

My P5K-VM will do 425FSB prime stable on my 6400, I'd like 450-475 with this board. Keep is it up dogsx2. I may pick one up tomorrow.

That's not with the ob video on, is it? I had a P5K-VM before this board. I had my 6300 in this mb and it will do what your looking for easy. I wish I would have taken a ss when the 6300 was in it. It did about 515 with a pci video card in it also.

At least on this board you can adjust the volt for the memory past 2.1v. There are really quit a few clocking options.

Yes, 425FSB was with onboard video active as shown in this everest cpuid. My 6400 will do 3.8Ghz but I'd settle for 3.6Ghz with this build. I use OCZ EL Pl 8000's or G Skill HZ's. Both do 500FSB with 2.1v but the increase in available vdimm is still welcomed.

I never knew where to check the vdimm on that board but it had to be more then 2.1v. I did 625 MHz on some Ballistix 8500's, here.

Looks like a decent replacement for my AM2 HTPC (M2A-VM HDMI) with a 4800+

The power draw using a new 8400 should be significant :up:

Those are some good sticks because max vdimm on the board is 2.1v unless there were some changes with a newer bios that I've not used.

Nice boards, mine managed above 500.

The cpu used is e6600 B2 stepping; video card is x800 pci-e.

I am not 100% sure what voltages are needed for northbridge, fsb termination and so forth so I pretty much eyeballed the settings for those. Somewhere on the middle of the drop-down list in BIOS.

RAM is Crucial D9, 2GB of 1GBx2 in dual channel, 1:1 ratio. I haven't tweaked the timings either, whatever BIOS assumed would be good. The vmem is set to 2.24 - I was aiming for around 2.2v actual after the droop.

This little board has more tweaks and adjustments in BIOS than my P5W64 WS Pro. I left most on AUTO but I am positive that P5E-VM could be fine-tuned for some nice overclocks.

The board is unmoded; even the original sinks on north- and south- bridges are stock.

The short of it: It doesn't like going above fsb 530; not sure whether it's the chipset or the RAM or it needs more tweaking. 529 is good enough for SuperPI. At 521 it has no problems running Blend in Orthos. I think I am going to keep it around for a while.

wow, I just got one to replace an aging P4 based HTPC. going to put my x6800 in it as I'm upgrading :p: the BX2 to a Q6600. Glad to hear it's got some legs on it.

Dogs just out of curiosity would you use this as a media center PC hooked up to your tv or are the graphics somewhat lackluster? Not looking to game just looking to consolidate all my components into 1 package in my livingroom.......etc dvd/blueray and files not playable on the average dvd player.....

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but a good graphics card isn't really needed to work through the encoding used in hd/blueray. It just decreases the load on the cpu. If you have a capable cpu in it, i believe there's no problem. Personally I am going to be using this board for a HTPC. RAID on a uATX board is awesome.

Anybody know if the Apogee GT water block will fit this MB (Asus P5E-VM HDMI )......? I expect it does, but the capacitors look really close....

I read that this board has load line calibration option in BIOS...does it actually work? I'm ordering this board and am wondering if it could clock a QX9650 decently or not....I know it's 4 phase power, but if droop can be controlled, I'm sure it will handle quads well...the OP did very well with a Q6600.

If you put an extreme chip in this board, be prepared to be disappointed. From my time with it, it is very capable overclocker as far as the u-ATX integrated graphics boards go, but it is by no means the kinda board that you would want to waste a $1000 chip on. You would probably do well with it, but i would have to ask you what you are looking for getting a IGP u-ATX board with a top of the line chip.

Why not get something more sensible for that CPU that has proper high quality power delivery and a full set of overclocking options such as GTL tuning and tRD settings?

Uh, it has a x16 slot for a discrete videocard....the HTPC case I'm using supports full length videocards...I plan on putting in a 3870x2 card in along with the CPU I mentioned & 4 150gb Raptors...paired with my 1080p TV, I will have a very nice set-up...I am just hoping I can overclock the 45nm quad ok...I would be very happy 4ghz-4.2ghz...I don't know if I will be able to fit in my Freezone Elite yet, but if I can, temps will stay low.

Also, I believe this mobo has GTL tuning as well...

ah, so you just want a uATX board that you can overclock. So you just want to go overboard for a HTPC that you can play games on? I was just curious what you'd be doing with your HTPC that would require a top of the line quad core and a compromised small form factor board.

But anyway, I was just making sure, cause you will probably be able to push the QX9650 much further in the DFI board you have in your sig. Yeah this board does have GTL tuning, but mostly for optimizing dual cores. It can't control the levels on the signaling coming from each die on the package like the DFI board, so it's a shot in the dark as to how much room that will buy you.

I'm looking very hard at this build for a small gaming center that will be hooked up to my TV for dedicated 720p play. I've already got 4 gigs of ram to go with it and a nice PSU. I still need to decide on graphics,CPU and case though. I'm currently hung up on the e6550 and as for graphics and case, I still have no clue.

currently running e8400 @ 4Gh (445 fsb) with vcore set on auto... so as far as fsb overclocking is concerned, it should do ok.

it might need vcore mod though; there was one on hardforums somewhere.

I bought this board and really like it so far. I've had it ~1 month and have had zero issues with it. I plan on OCing it in the future, but right now I'm busy with other things. :up:

The reviews at newegg are not very good, but they are good across the net generally. So far this definitely seems to be a rockin' little board.....:yepp:

Just swapped out an E6000 for an E8400 on my P5E-VM HDMI and it will not post now, nothing, nada not a single beep.. never had to rma a board in above 15 years :shrug:

How long have You had the MB? You may just need to put the E6000 back long enough to update the bios.....

Had latest bios in, E6600 back in and still playing no post...

Well, i got my E8400 running flawlessly on this board, even with default bios (0301). Now i am on 0405 and have lots of issues with standby/resume. Actually, only with resume... as my computer simply doesn't want to get out from standby state :( Also, another bad issue is the fan controlling method. On every fan profiles, i get either 3000 RPM (maximum speed - too noisy), either 350-400 RPM (too low, even get fan errors).... It's just strange...

Btw, i've noticed they released Beta Bios 0503 in here: http://support.asus.com/download/dow...-VM%20HDMI Any news about what's fixed ? Hopefully the standby and cooling options...

I heard that the latest beta bios fixes all the fan control / resume issues

i was trying to hunt down 0502 bios - it was the one where they fixed the sleep issue.

I used FSB800 and 1:2 ratio (a.k.a. FSB at 800 and RAM at 800) as well as 1:3 ratio (a.k.a. FSB at 800 and RAM at 1200) with no problem at all,

and 4:5 ratio?
