looking at it both the Q9xx and Xeon X3xx have identical specs and prices.
the current X3xx Xeons are socket 775 chips. if these ones are too, whats the difference between them and the Q9xx chips.

i think i will try to pick up the q9450 if i find a good deal on one when they come out, hopefully the prices don't get inflated due to demand like some other products, i.e 8800gt.
I will have to wait on Q9450 on how it will overclock on air.

Intel Extreme CPUs do not hold up their worth, performance delta isn't worth all that extra $$. Perhaps it's worth $50 or $100 at best
Q9450 suffers from a relatively low multiplier and limited FSB limits since it’s a yorkfield and that brings the E8500 issue, but the Q9450 will be the one if you think for long term
If it reached 450mhz this means 450X8 = 3600Mhz CPU speed which can be done with air only, no need for water cooling, well….for non-QX chips no need for water cooling at all
ya and the E8400 is a really good choice for a low budget's

Ok, it's decision time for me and I need some help.
First off, you should know my machine is primarily used for gaming. I don't need extra power for editing, rendering, benchmarking, or anything like that...just pure gaming.
Right now I'm looking at either the Q9450 or the E8400. I'm also willing to toss around the idea of a Q6600. The Q9450 would obviously be more "future-proof" than the dualcore for games, but everyone also said that last year about Conroe, and look how many games actually benefit significantly from 4 cores. The E8400 would not only be a lot cheaper, but I would most likely be able to clock it higher due to the drop in heat and the higher multiplier.
So...what do you all recommend: a more expensive quad-core that would probably clock lower, or a cheaper dual-core that would probably clock higher?
I might also get another 2 gigs of ram with the upgrade (definitely if I get the dual-core, since the one I'm looking at is nearly half the price).
Remember, this is a gaming machine, and money IS an issue (I'm not willing to "spend just a little more for...etc." or go water-cooling). I also want this upgrade to be a noticable increase over my current CPU (see sig) and last at least long enough to make it worth the money (1 year+).

P.S. - I may or may not invest in the new nVidia card, information is being tossed all over the place and I just need to wait and see how things pan out.

In about 2 months you probably can buy second hand q6600's which will do around 3.6ghz / 3.8ghz for 24/7 for around 150 euro. Or you can buy a q9450 which will do the same while it costs more. If i want a new cpu it has to be 9x multiplier. Wolfdale will be much more fun :D
Yorkfield is also on average 7% faster clock for clock than the Kentfield...Quote:

I think I'm going to ditch the Q6600 for an E8500. I could live with a 4.5Ghz Dual Core until developers finally realize the benefits of more than 1 core and how to utilize them.
Yeah the Penryn quads aren't really looking to be that great. Still the same 450-500 FSB wall as Conroe, and only a 5-8% increase in performance clock-for-clock. Although it'll be interesting to see if that changes when they start retailing. Maybe Intel delayed them somewhat because they're working on the FSB wall?
So maybe I'll be looking at a cheep Q6600 G0 instead of a Q9450, since my current B3 runs stupidly hot. And there will probably be a lot of cheap second hand Q6600's on the market soon, too.
Now those E8400's, on the other hand... I'd love to get my mitts on one of those and see how high I can get it screaming along...

I read in custom PC that Xeon chips are optimised for servers;apparently the prefetchers are tuned for server type applications as opposed to desktop apps hence they can be up to 25% slower in games but faster in folding /cinebench. Can anyone here verify this?

Q9450 speed = FSB X 8 ………. Q9450 @ 4000Mhz means FSB = 500 (which is maybe the max that Yorkfields would reach)
E8500 speed = FSB X 9.5 ………. E8500 @ 5000 means FSB = 526 (which is reachablefor the Wolfdale)
I’m planning to keep the chip for about 4 years, so I think Q9450 is the best
I think in 2009 the extra core’s will be working more and more so I don’t want to end up having only dual core’s at that time cuz I’m sure I’ll be forced to upgrade
when I had a plan to wait for Nehalem I aimed at the E8500, but when I knew that Nehalem will have new different socket and when I started thinking about what’s really enough for a decent computing experience I realized the Q9450 is enough…it’s even enough at stock speed (for me)
if you have short plans for the chip or frequently upgrade your rig go for the E8500 it’s a nice chip, though I don’t know why upgrading every 6 months, but anyway that’s a suppurate issue

Q9450 + ASUS MAXIMUS FORMULA + 4GB (2X2) DDR2@OCable to 500Mhz (mostly the G.Skill DDR2-1000)____let’s say $350 + $260 + $114 = $724
MAXIMUS FORMULA will offer me:
native support for the new 45nm processors (I guess the P35 does that but after updating the drivers)
and PCI-E 2.0
and I’ll go 5 loops with this thing (CPU+GPU+NB+SB+Mosfet1+Mosfet2 )
and of course this board has proven that it worth the extra money
but I admit that the $404 plan is a very smart one, it can even go cheaper if done with the new Wolfdale E8400 instead of the Q6600
all those plans will offer a super computer/gaming experience specially when executed with a top-end graphic card (like the next GeForce 9800GX2)
maybe that’ why manufacturers offer this plan:
the worthless QX bla bla + the pointless DDR3 + top-end X38 (or even X48) = moahaha
so people with a plan similar to mine would feel they haven’t done the most stupid plan
