ATi HD 3870 X2 (R680); Official Specifications & Images
-
thats not going to fit in a regular ATX case :shakes:
-
yay 7900GX2 reborn! and red this time!
edit:
after careful scrutiny, I'd say its more suitable to whack people than to be used as a graphics card
-
-
-
You could almost mistake it for a motherboard.
-
Benchies?
Power Consupmtion?
Price?
-
-
will this work in a p35 with only one PCI-E slot like my Abit IP35-e?

Why wouldnt it? it only needs 1 PCIe slot...(its cooler takes up the other which doesnt need pplugged in on a mobo...
-
so it doesn't need a crossfire mobo to run 1 of these cards? I was under the impression it was using crossfire somehow to have 2x R680 gpus on a board.
-
still wont run crysis @ max

We have no more official information from AMD.
But the price and power consumption will be lower than two HD 3870's.
Benchies;I really don't know how this card will perform.

No Crossfire mobo needed. This card has already a controller (PLX chip) on it.The Gpus communicate over this ''bridge'' chip
-
dam...those eyes....i'm sold!
-
Great, thanks for posting, ..::ABSOLUT::.. ! I'm waiting for this baby and will buy a couple. Already bought a 3870 to have something to play with in the meantime.

"Use up to 4 GPUs with an AMD 790 FX based motherboard." What is that supposed to mean. I mean, wasn't it already stated that they will run in Crossfire on a x38 based motherboard (Maximus Formula)?

I guess it's just that they wouldn't go to the extent of promoting the competitor's product.
-
I also see CF connectors on this card. I wonder if you could run 4 for 8 GPUs. :p:
-
AMD is making some serious buzz in the gpu market....unlike their cpu's ..

Well yeah , it will support CF in multi card platform bcuz that is why you'll need a 790 chipset. I doubt 4 is a possibility but AMD making 3 cores per PCB is not that impossible at all. But a 32nm process will be required if they ever think about implimenting it.
-
So will this card work in crossfire on a x38 board ??
-
666 million transistors. Now isn't that a sweet number? :D
-
It's obvios why they made it so looong. If they would have made it shorter they would have had to crop that ruby eyes picture. blasphemy! we want ruby sexy eyes in full glory!
thus you see why this card is so long :D
-
max 4 gpus in x-fire bye bye octofire

I'm wondering if budget CF will be possible with this card.
I mean 1 HD3870X2 + 1 HD3870 for TriFire :D

:)
Is this a poster or a graphics card?
I think Ati will loose customers because this card is really too long. It's almost impossible to fit it in a normal ATX PC case without modifications.
(I have to cut out the HDD drive bays of my Asus TA250 to fit it in:D,crazy)

true, look at it by scale of the slot connector, 13 inches MAX, probably 12.
-
I don't like it, but that's because I've never liked the dual GPU cards
-
if the stock cooler is good, im getting 2 of those and Maximus formula ...
-
About the length: on the previously posted picture of the installed cards (in CF) you could see it is almost as long as the ATX motherboard's width [EDIT: no, it's longer, correction in post #42 ]. So you'd have to have a really small case ( ) wouldn't it fit... in which case you wouldn't even deserve to have one. :p:
-
I haven't used ATI since a 9600 AIW theres reasons aplenty. Start with hassle filled resource hogging drivers. Next go to poor marketing then top it off with a dose of lackluster performance. Is ATI turning it around?
This one is different for the ages. ATI nor Nvidia has released dual gpu solution one pcb.
Carries reference design on single pcb even if it is big, its a first for a high end offering from the players.
I like it considering it brings ass kicker performance at a reasonable price.
Not to mention ATI has Nvidia releasing products it has had on hold for months.....
ATI should use this success as a quick stepping stone. They let the market idle for too long with stagnant products and high prices. If they don't release products faster with more refined drivers History will repeat itself.
Nvidia won't wait around and 9800(Ironic eh?) whatever will smoke this card. So please get an answer soon or we will be another 8-9 months of 500-699 offerings with little or no incentive to release a new bargain aka 8800 gt.
You are finally getting my interest again, maybe pick up the pace with a better looking web page and don't forget to offer this card at less than 450$.:D
-
Well,that's good news.
It seems much longer in the pictures than it is.
But even if it is as long as an Ultra I still have to cut around in my case to fit it in...:D
Edit:

I must correct myself. :nono: Here's the picture: it is a bit longer than the mobo's width. :hrhr:

WOW! I am like totally flabbergasted. I can't remember the last time I was actually excited for an ATI video card. Let's hope it doesn't disappoint. And that there are no issues with drivers... and so on and so forth... etc... to infinity... and beyond...

well, two of these in crossfire will equal what, ~$800. two 8800gtx will cost around the same, maybe more, no? I think these'll be a great deal.

Less than $800 supposedly.
-
I'll buy it if its around 400$ max.
My order for 8800GTS went down the drain. Online vendors suck hard here with stock management.
-
So, any word on compatibility with x38 mobo's? I really need 2 of these...

So where you been hiding past few years?
Radeon 9 series pwned nVidia for good while, Catalyst drivers have been improving monthly.
I feel sorry for ATi as 3870 is all the R6XX chip can give and all they have as a replacement is R700 which is going to be MCM package.
CorssfireX and Hybrid Crossfire are warmups for the R7XX GPU's.

and they will in future.
Look at 7900gtx vs x1900xtx in early 2006. Ati was back by around 10%.
Today x1900xtx is like 15% ahead, increasing when AA and AF come into the view.
I think end of 2008, 3870 will beat 8800gt, maybe earlier.

No,the PLX bridge chip only uses 4 watts(as far as I know). So no extra cooling required.

No official info yet,but I think it will use a bit less than 2xHD 3870 Crossfire because it's a single PCB card.I expect circa 280 watts...
-
i wonder how kinc is gonna cool this, i dont see any way to cool this beast with ln2. Gonna be realy hard, depending on how far appart those chips are. Looks like the distance is like 2 times a gddr4 chips, thats gonna be near to imposible to cool with a tube, let alone isolating the tube correctly
-
mabey 1GB od memory? id love 2 :D dont know what i would use all that for though lol
could just cut a up a cpu heatsink and stick it to the plx
-
If this card hold up on performance, I'm sure there will be a full cover block around for it. We'll see, but 2 gpu blocks on one card would be a little pricey, so at that point a full cover block would probably be the answer.
-
wow, the card is going to be very long.
7900gx2 style :D

Should draw less power than 2 seperate 3870's. Memory is 1 GB total, 512 MB per GPU.

A proper launch for the 3870X2 would mean immediate availability, good reference OC, and good drivers. MSRP decides how many computers you want your product in. Now then...
I over clock my system generally to near single stage levels with a chiller that can go -40c. My Opteron 185 does 3.3 24/7 bench. 3.2 in case. My 3dmark score is over 11k with a 8800gts 320 and ddr s939. I use DI from time to time on a bench to test CPU's. Gaming is my focus.
So, I want a reliable, usable, affordable product from a manu, that has a high standard for its OEMs in the support area, on launch day.
No reason to hide from standards.

Question: In single card mode with the the 3870X2, is all of the 1gig memory usable and what about 3870X2-CF? What would be the memory situation using that setup

No! The HD3870 X2 is SHORTER than a 8800GTX. So stop all this bs here about the lengths.

just let me know when I can buy it, then i'm interested

rumors an german newspage said, that this card can, unlike 2 single 3870 which must have all data doubled, use full 1gb in CF mode because of some ringbus or whatever.
Not sure about single card, but who wants single card ?
anyway, 3870X2-CF will have use of only 512 or 1024mb, depending on the rumor(truth or not). 2gb ist not possible at all.
-

That rumor is pure crap concerning the R680, it's a rumor that's about the upcoming R700. The rumor was that R700 will use 4 of the same chips and every chip would be a single stop on the ringbus-memory controller, just like R520/R580/R600/RV670 have 4 main stops on the ringbus internally, but this time each separate chips will be one of those stops.
-
Question...........Can one of these cards be used in CROSSFIRE with the current one in my sig?? Or is it going to be a definite NO?

Well you can CF a 3870 and a 3850, so short answer, yes... :yepp:
-
You Misunderstood I have (1) HIS HD 3870 already and would like to know if I bought one of the "NEW" Dual HD 3870 can I run it in CROSSFIRE with my Existing HD 3870 and if the answer is Yes what are the Drawbacks if any please??;)

If two pots don't fit there will probably be a custom pot made.
What I'm thinking would work is a normal single large tube with two HS curving off to their own core.
I'm no DICE/LN2/Pot expert but I think that would work, might be pretty dang hard/expensive though.

I said the 3850 and 3870 can CF because CrossFireX allows CF with any cards in that generation. So any HD 3000 series card can CF with any other HD 3000 series card.
Drawbacks, don't any, CrossFireX drivers for triple and quadruple CF are supposed to be available by the time the 3870 X2 launches so nothing there. Maybe it just won't look that good in your case

then you'd need a design similar to kinpin's tek9 rev 3.0 but even wider and with a thicker base + more contact with the ln2. Thats gonna be to expensive to make for using it on just one card, cause the r700 is gonna be mcm so you wouldn't need the tube anymore.
-
hummm my new 3870 and a 3870x2 when released, sounds like crysis pawnage for me
-
for sure, i think that wiull be my place for this card, alongside the 3870.
would it limit overclock of the 3870(single) when in crossfire mode though?
-
Acording to Intel 3870X2 will have 2GB GDDR4. Look in the grey box on the right.
http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/9...1944764bf0.jpg
-
1280 Shaders means that they're referring to a Crossfire of 3870 X2...
So 2GB of GDDR4 means that there is 1GB for each 3870X2... so 512MB for each RV670 if I'm not wrong :)
-

Nope, thats when using CF with two 3870X2.
-
Exactly. "CrossfireX" means 4 3800 GPU's (with 512MB each).
-
is it not the end of Jan yet? :(
-
640 Stream processors  , specs seems not bad. Lets see if AMD will price this good. Cant wait for Benches :D.
Power consumption would be moderate considering its a 55nm process :D.
-
Maybe I'm stupid, but shouldn't performance be roughly equal to two HD3870s in CF?
-

I would believe so, unless they somehow worked/added some extra magic to the PLX chip or they found a major enhancement for their CF drivers.
-
nvidia failed with quad SLI last time with 7950 GX2 SLI only openGL game quake 4 performs as expected
http://techreport.com/articles.x/11006/6
but again u dotn see extra performance over 7900GTX until ur over 1600x1200 @ 4xAA ....
if ATI can pull this off, since their Crossfire DO Scale better than SLI ... I think ATI will bring the crown back .... unless nv somehow fix their quad SLI performance ...
