i been into watercooling for years now and heard lots of fights vs spending the money on TRUE non conductive fluid vs distilled water etc...

I will take an LED fan and place it in a container and pour distilled water over it and film it while it continues to run if you'll send me $20 per quart of water :D

That's not an adequate test. Seriously. Take a cheap fan you do not care about and plug it in and dunk it into a bucket and I betcha $5 it will keep running.

Interesting but motor windings are typically insulated with varnish so there is a good chance you could do the same successfully with plain water. I would like to see them try that with a booted mobo and then I will be convinced.

hmm did not know that about the fans.but anyway the colors are really what im after,i want a green that really has a nice glow and theres look good.as far as the non conductive part,guess we will never know?:eek:

That is the worst anti conductivity test I have ever seen. I used to play around with 5 - 12 volt electric motors and over 90% of teh ones Ive messed with don;t care at all when you dunk them in water they keep going no problems.

An Elictric motor will only stop if its easier for teh electricity to flow through teh liqueid from the -ve to +ve connections than it is for it to flow through the copper coils in the motor. Now copper is ALOT more conductive than water so teh motors nearly always keep going without a hicup.

yeah, that's with oil. We all know oil is not conductive. What we like to see is a rig that has water that is "non-conductive" and is booted up and see if it'll fry.

That was amazing!
30 liters of vegetable oil.
And, I would have a deep fryer in my office. Fries on demand!

By the way, it was coolermiester who did that impromptu fan testing, not SWC.

I know the video your talking about CD. That was a good bit more impressive than this hack job of a test (no disrespect to Coolermiester). FrozenCPU has it but it seems to be corrupted, maybe when they switched over to the new interface. It seems Primochill is trying to forget they made that video as it's no longer up on their site or of their other site (Moddersmart). The only other reference I could find besides FCPU was @ Gruntville which had a dead link to the video as it pointed to Voyeurmods (now Moddersmart).

That "test" doesnt say anything. If you drop a hair dryer in normal water it will keep on going. It will only break if theres some sensitive electronics like on a motherboard. They should have flooded the entire computer in that stuff and see if it can run for a few hours, like people have done with oil.

I remember a few years back, Toms Hardware did a test where they were running a PC submerged in vegetable oil. They also did a few trial runs where the system was filled with distilled water. It was also a high end rig at the time.

Also distilled WONT CONDUCT. So why are you trying to convince people to get a premix coolant? Ive had water shoot out of my radiator, and splash on my board and PSU. And Not fry anything.

Infact most if not all vets of h2o cooling on this forum has leaked once in there h2o builds, and nothing bad happened as long as you used distilled h2o.

errr just noticed it didnt work.

Ok, as previously mentioned, I was at FCPU today and was able to talk to Mark and tell him about the corrupt video. Don't know how long it'll be before it's fixed, heck, they just may pull it off altogether. :shrug:

While we were talking, he mentioned to me that they will be carrying Feser One coolants and tubing soon.

I'm kinda tempted to clean off (IPA & contact cleaner ++) and fire up an old P2 board that I have sitting around... just to pour distilled water all over it (though, to be fair, I'd have to do the same with one of the "more conductive than distilled water but still marketed as non-conductive" coolants.... Could be fun, no?

I got to hold my hands up in starting all this…………..yeah it was my video that Feser took on board and is also showing on Youtube.

I know Petra is a little p’d off seeing this Youtube thread (me too but for different reasons) so just to go one better than Petra and his pink lemonade we just sacrificed a Kronenbourg………….and given the time of year it was a pretty big sacrifice.

About dousing a board in water- I had an old K6 system running without a heatsink, just to see what would happen. To put it briefly... Nothing happened, It worked fine.

Having not quite achieved the level of destruction I was going for, I filled a large glass with TAP water. Not normal tap water, But super-mineralized tap water from a combination of 1860's clay and copper pipes, And just went to town pouring it all over the board.

Nothing happened, And I got bored and threw out the system.

Perhaps I could donate an old system for such a test, I have several that are just collecting dust.

now pour it on a psu ;)

Yeah, I was kinda thinking about that yesterday evening... which is why I may end up dropping by a local place and picking up a couple cheap "modern" motherboards (ECS, anybody? :p: ) and a bottle of FluidXP or something before the end of the week.

I ran a few tests using my Megohmmeter and got some interesting results, the spacing between the two leads was always about 1 inch apart and the liquid (except for one) was at room temperature:

its actually the blue G11 from Petras. its the same stuff you see in my loop. i guess the glasses i was using made it look green

For the record, a multimeter (or, in this case, a Megohmmeter) isn't exactly an ideal instrument for measuring the conductivity/resistivity of a fluid (especially with those probes). Something like this or this would produce more meaningful, repeatable results. As I recall, someone around here has/has access to one of those Myron units...

Water, in its pure state, is also a perfect dielectric fluid; however, because water is also such a great solvent, it's very difficult to get "pure" water and even more difficult to keep it that way. I'd imagine that liquid nitrogen isn't such a great solvent... ;) Either way, this is all beside the point... the PR behind most of these nonconductive PC coolants is nothing short of laughable--they aren't Fluorinert, after all... just water with junk added.

I decided to try my own conductive fluid test, However, It did not go as planned.


My *Plan* was to use a 60mm generic delta screamer fan to blend up some Pace picante salsa. However, The salsa was too think to allow the fan to move.

Nevertheless, after some rinsing, The fan still works!

It was a study at Oxford if i remember it correctly. We see the word as its whole and not individual characters. To bad my google skills has disappeared with the Rum and Beer xD

Yeah I finally determined that it was FrozenCPU..but indeed the video has been changed.

I have to wonder if that is because of some negative feedback on the actual conductivity of PC Ice. I have been meaning to replicate that experiment as I have a number of obsolete machines.

Well i actually blew a barb as well on my NB, and the whole coolant came flushing on my main board.

Plastic barb being screwed in the wrong way was the problem. The computer was probably live for about 2 min, b4 it was shut down, and then was dipped litterally in rubbing alcohol, and allowed to fully dry.

And it still works.... :\


But you showing your pictures is starting to make me rethink things again... Meaning theres no way it could of been user error.....

Plastic barb being screwed in the wrong way was the problem. The computer was probably live for about 2 min, b4 it was shut down, and then was dipped litterally in rubbing alcohol, and allowed to fully dry.

And it still works.... :\


But you showing your pictures is starting to make me rethink things again... Meaning theres no way it could of been user error.....

Here's the scary part, it was a brand new build. I ran Prime 95 overnight and it was running fine for 2 hrs before I went to bed. In the morning, when I went downstairs to the basement to see how it was doing, I ran into a odd yet familiar smell half way down the stairs. Noticed the red CCFL's weren't lit and thought it shut itself down due to over heating, pushed the power button, CCFL's flickered for a sec and went back out, did it 3 more times before it sank in that something was wrong, turned the case and saw that. It also partially charred the alum of the X-QPack case it was in.

If you're buying it mainly for the color, save your money. The nice green glow will fade shortly. There are a few threads in here about that very same thing.

When I first got into liquid cooling last year, I was worried about frying my PC, so I thought an aftermarket non-conductive liquid was the way to go(FluidXP, UV Blue). Everyone here and at another OC forum told me not to do it. But did I listen? Nooooo. Should I have? Damn straight! The deep blue turned pale blue in a couple of months, and after what I've learned, probably lost it's non-conductivity characteristics.

Take it from someone who's been there, done that. Follow the guide and forget about the gimmick fluids out there.

did you read some of the comments on the youtube fluidxp video... they had me :ROTF:

Idk, I've used fluorinert fc-77 in a PC and that was a completely nonconductive coolant.

Unfortunately, it caused the eheim 1048 to burn out.

Exahertz could you try distilled water and some anti aglae stuff and see if it is conductive

it shorted under higher voltages.

And even distilled is conductive if there are contaminants (and there almost always is).

Yeah i guess so. Oh well just have to be more careful when i am setting up to prevent leaks :)

Fluorinert is an entirely different animal which really shouldn't be lumped in with the 'non-conductive PC coolants'.

Considering that we're not really dealing with anything above 12V DC... 250V DC is an acceptable short voltage ;)

so why wont oil conduct? what if it had contaminates in it?
and furthermore (dont laugh) why hasnt there been a liquid cooling loop with oil pumped through it (and of course using an oil pump)?
