NB: Make sure bios is set to completely stable defaults and all (and i mean ALL = CTRL + ALT + DEL) antivirus / spyware scanners are inactive before flashing using this method.... Asus Update is notorious for destroying bios! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED :D

2: Attempt fresh install with SATA set in ACHI mode and use the the following driver revs:

Intel F6 floppy driver version used: 7.5.0.1017 (ACHI) - taken from Asus Download centre ....
Intel chipset update version used: 8.3.1.1009
Intel matrix storage manager version used:7.8.0.1012

If install still fails, flash bios (using only AFUDOS utility to update to 0504 beta bios and try again.

0504 bios tested working on my board with WD 120gb SATA II drives
0504 bios tested working with Samsung T166 500gb SATA II drives

Vista: not tested yet.

RAID mode:

Win XP Solution:

1: 1: Reflash your current bios with the AFUDOS utility in Dos from boot Floppy / USB / CD so as to guarantee a clean bios.

2: Attempt fresh install with SATA set in RAID mode and use the the following driver revs:

Intel F6 floppy driver version used: 7.5.0.1017 (select ICH9R RAID -not ACHI) - taken from Asus Download centre ....
Intel chipset update version used: 8.3.1.1009
Intel matrix storage manager version used:7.8.0.1012

If install still fails, flash bios (using only AFUDOS utility to update to 0504 beta bios and try again.

I experienced several slow downs and one BAD_POOL_HEADER BSOD at my first attempt.... give up only on BSOD, not 30 sec of inactivity during install ;)

0504 cios tested successfully with 2 WDJS 120GB SATA II drives (SATA II mode) in RAID 0 with 16k stripe
0504 bios tested successfully with Samsung T166 500GB (JBOD)

Tested overclocked at 400 x 9 & 450 x 8: no i/o errors in event viewer to date.


Vista: Not tested Yet.

Hi all,

I had recently got hold of an Asus P5K Premium to play with, and was putting together a new rig for a client when I hit a game breaker: the updated ICH9R southbridge chip hated most of the hard drives I plugged into it, and really hated my RAID configurations, especially when overclocked.

After digging around I came across a few reports from various places that this board does not play nice with pretty much all hard drives except Seagate (for reasons unknown) and that compatibility was improved by using SATA I mode (or SATA I drives).

To this end I attempted a Vista install with 2 Raptors in Raid 0 which locked up completely during install, so I repeated this test 3 times - with the same result. I then repeated the test using a PCI-e 4x Raid card which worked flawlessly.

I then attempted to install XP on a single WD drive in SATA II mode which also locked up. Exact same results were observed if a Samsung T166 500gb drive was connected to the ICH9R.


Can anyone shed any light on this issue?

It is a great shame that this board which has a lot of potential and can run my Q6600 @ 500 x 7 rock solid seems crippled by this problem.

Edit : The board in question is a rev 2.0G (China) with the latest 404 bios......


Since this board has been out for a few months now, has anyone got this board stable in Raid / ACHI mode at 400fsb+ speeds with Samsung / WD SATA II drives Raid 0 ?

Also, anyone tested this board with a SSD or two?

I haven't done Raid or SSD but my P5k Premium works perfectly fine with my two raptors and my seagates. I'm using 500FSB with a Xeon 3060 with a 6x multplier.

Honestly, I think the only reliable answer with the Premium is to do what you have done (and I am about to upgrade to) - use a hardware RAID card to add RAID capabilities, especially with the latest Samsung drives which are particularly recommendable right now for price/performance.

I'm also far more confident in the results: I am very suspicious of on-board RAID solutions since hearing odd reports of occasional hash errors using QuickPAR that can't easily be accounted for by overclocking or memory issues, but might be a result of poor drivers or an obscure chipset hardware bug. It's probably not an issue with the Intel Southbridge compared to nVidia, but I remain cautious. The other distinct advantages of off-board RAID make it the most sensible solution.

Note that there is a reported bug in the Intel Southbridge (not just on the Premium) restricting maximum bandwidth when connected directly to current SSDs. There has been discussion of this in the News forum.

Yep. The controller just falls over when you select anything other than IDE mode, I would be interested if you kept your raptor stability if you moved to RAID or ACHI mode, but please do not break your installation to do this :D only test if you have the time / spare hardware to plug in....:up:

Bandwidth caps with crappy intel chipsets I can handle, I just want to know if this board falls over with SSD's connected as well of the rest of the SATA flakiness :D

New 0504 bios posted on Asus FTP here

No idea if it is a beta but I flashed it right away anyway :D

Test setup:

P5K Premium rev 2.00G (China)

WD Raptor 150GB @ SATA1
WD 120GB SATAII (in SATA II mode) @ SATA6.

All bios settings stock except ram Vdimm (2.2v)

Results:

1: ICH9R set to IDE mode: System boots into XP with no problems :up:

2: ICH9R set to SATA mode in Bios: System soft reset 2 seconds after beginning to boot XP. :down:

3: ICH9R set to ACHI mode in bios: System soft reset 2 seconds after beginning to boot XP. :down:


Conclusion: >.<

Update:

After reflashing the new beta 0504 bios (using afudos /ip5k0504.rom from a bootable usb stick) and completeing yet another fresh install of WinXP with the ICH9R set to ACHI mode (:eek:) I managed to get myself a stable XP desktop with this board at default clocks.


NB: I have so far not been able to flash back to bios version 0404 with any rev of Afudos. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED :D


The only drives connected during the install were a raptor 150gb and a sata dvd drive.

I am now testing the ICH9R ports with various SATA II drives:

Tested so far (not as boot drive):

2 WD 120GB drives in SATA II mode have booted fine with no probs...
1 Samsung HD501LJ 500GB in SATA II mode booted fine (1st time ever!) :up: :up:

Progress? Lets hope so ;-)

Next: the dreaded raid mode test :D

ps. this 0504 bios seems pretty flaky even after a full afudos wipe and reflash.

Successful test completed on Win XP with 2 x 120GB WD drives in Raid 0 and SATA II mode.

This is a great stride forward as before the system would hang with these SATA II drives attatched.

Edit: Also now tested with Samsung T166 drives and hours and hours of copying 100's of GB back and forth : no lockups / slowdowns; no i/o errors in event viewer.

I had one BAD_POOL_HEADER 0x00000019 BSOD on first attempt but just after F6 part of install but second install attempt error free was fine.

I also had a couple of slowdowns during install, but once finished the system is running at expected speed with no slow downs thus far.

So far tried overclocked :

400 x 9 : stable :up:
450 x 8 : stable :up:

I have two 150GB raptors. I run IDE mode for XP and AHCI for OSX. Haven't tested them in a raid on this board. 0404 Bios.

Does this board have an auto-shut off that is temperature related? I'm looking for a bios setting but I don't see it...

I've not tried raid 0,but my two samsungs are on ahci mode.All seems ok.I'm on bios 0404 btw.

That is good to know. When I first hooked up my P5KP it would freeze loading XP with a Samsung T166 (or any WD SATA II I tried) attached in RAID or ACHI mode. I could only get these drives working with the 0504 bios and the method/drivers I explained in post #1.

Nope...

Way to go back old BIOS, should work with other Asus MBs,

using the uploaded file together with Asus Liveupdate
(1) load the BIOS with Asus Update as usual, remember click "downgrade" option in Asus Update Option
(2) Load the file I uploaded
(3) click the leftmost button
(4) the update button should be un-greyed, then click update, otherwise, repeat Step (3)
(5) after update successfuly, switch off the computer and clear the CMOS as usual

I already back to 404 from 504, 504 limits my rams overclocking.

Weird, I run 4 X 150GB Raptors in raid 0 with this board under vista 64bit, with bios 0402 and 0404 without problems, also have my Q6600 at either 8 X 400fsb for 3.2GHz or 9 X 400fsb for 3.6GHz while running 8gb of ram.

One thing I notice though is in the Intel Matrix Storage Console in windows the Serial ATA Transfer Mode is shown as Generation 1 and I know the WD Raptors are SATA II drives....WTF?...or perhaps I'm missing something.

Yep. All Raptors are still SATA 1, regardless of generation. This thread is a discussion about compatibility problems with the P5K Premium and SATA II drives (and any other issues that are discovered); there are no known compatability issues with any SATA 1 drives and the ICH9R controller on this board to date... :)

I just tried to downgrade to a older bios and used TinTin&#180;s method and it just erased my bios and then something went wrong :( I got a message that said "unable to open flash driver" or something like that, at the end it said 100&#37; on erased and the last one but 0% on writing eeprom! Now when I try to open asusupdate again it says "Unable to get bios information" and then it crashes!

What can I do? Shall I reboot and hope for the best or is there another way to flash from windows?

Feck.

I am sad to recieve this news.

This is why i wish there was a way to downgrade in dos.

If your config is in any way unstable then this can happen. Make sure bios are always set to stable defaults before you flash!

Asus update is notorious for bricking boards too :mad:

If you are still in windows then run a scan of bios to see if they are present using cpuz etc then try asus update again.

If you reboot with no bios present = dead mb!

There are a couple of solutions here on XS for this including load default bios from cd - search for details as I cannot remember them..

After struggling with this board for so long I have come to the realization that I simply do not trust it to be the basis of my main rig any more. As a result it off my test bench, packed and RMA'd.

I have picked up a DFI LP UT P35 T2R which operates it's onboard SATA raid (and everything else) flawlessly....

:(

Why do Asus insist on using soldered on bios chips? :shrug:

It's not as if you can replace it without RMA'ing the motherboard, RMA process in the UK with Asus takes between 3 to 6 weeks it's absolutly disgusting because once it has been recieved they send it abroad to be repaired. :down:

Plus the fact you cannnot revert back to an older bios via dos update is just totally stupid. :shrug:

I had a bad flash of an Asus board myself & after chasing Asus up over & over again I gave up & bought a different board. :(

I dont think I'll ever buy an Asus motherboard EVER again especially reading whats happend here.

I just hope Mutt gets his bios sorted. . . . :(

Hmm. Ive never encountered a sata problem with this motherboard to date. Ive installed all the hard drives I can find on this thing. Ive even gone as far as installing IDE to Sata adapters on my burner and dvd burner.
Im now running a WD raptor 74gig
2 maxtor 200gigs
1 dvd burner
1 cdrw

I havent used Asus Liveupdate before. When i load in in Winxp it doesnt give me any opportunity to load a bios. In fact it doesnt appear to let me do anything. What am i missing?

After installing the new E8400, and installing a AC Cooler, the bios always beeps of error at booting because it reports 400 rpm from the cooler. That is normal, the CPU is at 27 degrees, but i think it is a bios error, because the bm temperature reports in bios -110 degrees. :|

No problem with RAID 0 on the Seagate 1000's. All went well the first install. Overclock is stable and there is no Vdroop. As a matter of a fact, there is a Vraise of 1.376v --> 1.384v on Prime95 v2.5.

Remove your DRAM. Reset your CMOS jumper. Install a single strip of DDR667 Vanilla DRAM.

Which is the normal temp for the E8400? At me it shows in bios 27 degrees, in Everest also 27 degrees in idle state, all this with a Arctic Cooling cooler, but core temp shows 47 degrees. Is there a problem with the sensors or this bios release is faulty (0504). Also the rpm in the cooler stays at 400 rpm, raising only to max 1000 rpm in full load. The CPU is OC at 3600 mhz, auto vcore.

There is a more simple way to downgrade your bios, just use: AsusUpdt version 6.10.02 it works like charm both up and down. Dont forget to choose "downgradeable".

I have tried everything else but i think this is the simplest way. the file is to big for me to attach, just google for it.

anyone having problems locking pcie 16x after updating to 0504?
I was able to lock it at 103mhz with 400fsb after updating. But after playing around with fsb in bios I can no longer lock it at 103mhz pcie with fsb set to 400mhz... any suggestions?

OMG that means I was extremely lucky to get a lock at 400 :eek: now why did I had to go fool around with the damn fsb :shakes: I remember I disabled pcie gfx control by accident once and got a 103mhz lock right after CMOS reset. any care to confirm?

IIRC this was discussed in the main thread for this board, or the P5K Deluxe thread, and the trick was to manually set the PCI frequency higher, from 110 to 120MHz. Upping one of the voltage settings helps too, but I can't recall which one, either Northbridge or PCI - the latter seems likely. Searching those threads should turn up the answer.

Thanks, I've tried from 101 to 120mhz and nothing worked. But I havn't tried to up the NB (no idea what PCI voltage is called in the 504 bios) later tonight.

My p5k deluxe is dead, it doesn't do the POST just fans are working and the secreen has the message no signal.

The salesman in the computer shop says me that they haven`t got any p5k deluxe anymore and they only sell p5k premium now. It's p5k premium wifi/ap a good P35 mobo for my raid (see signature), if not some piece of advice for an ICH9R board in order to reactivate my RAID, GB DS4 rev2.1 perhaps?

heeeey the exact same thing happened to me. I bought a IP35 pro to just hold me over until something new and better comes along.

i have the p5kp too and update to the 504 bios
one raptor at ahci, no mayor problems
q6600 runs at 3.6ghz, 400x9
4x1gb ballistix running at cas3 3-3-3-8 at 800mhz
which where my problem comes in. i tried to set it to cas5 and 1200mhz in bios but cpu-s still shows it at 533, not 600.
ram was defenitlly easier to play with, with the 404 bios

So when you force PCI-E to 100mhz in the BIOS it just ignores it??

I haven't had any problems with it and I'm currently running 525 FSB...

How can you tell what speed your pci-e is actually running at? Would a util like cpuz tell the truth?

I run 3.8GHz at 8x475 without ever noticing that PCI-E x1 issue. On some P5B deluxe, it was a northbridge issue, once you give it too much volts the problem appears.

On the P5K premium, doing the opposite (giving the NB and or the SB some more volts) can solve the issue like said above. But, on most boards, it was a PSU unit. Once you OC too much, the PSU can't handle the power needs of the VGA card and it lowers to x1

And yes, CPU-Z will show it easily under the motherboard tab

If you get a P5K premium then you run the risk of it not working with your Western Digital drives.... this is not 100&#37; certain, some boards work and some do not but it seems to be sheer luck if yours is ok.

Just to confirm the most important issue thus far of this thread:

The P5K Premium has serious incompatibility issues with Western Digital and Samsung SATA II drives.

Seagate and Maxtor are fine; there are no known issues with SATA 1 drives (all raptors + others) and this board.

I found the worst incompatibility was with the 404 bios or earlier.... 504 was better...

re specific drives: I could raid 0 a pair of 120gb WD's but had no luck with a WD 500GB's or Sammy T166's in RAID or ACHI...

I have XP SP3 loaded, but I believe the problem was there with SP2 as well. Even tried with Windows Vista.

Basically I have ACPI 2.0 enabled, S3, installed WINXP. When I try to resume from Sleep mode, the machine never comes out. I can hear my 8800GTS fan blowing full speed like it's stuck.

I'd try another video card but I dont have one available. Has anyone successfully gotten their computer to resume from (S3) Sleep mode? If so what are your settings in BIOS?

I'm thinking of picking up the P5K-Premium for a Q9550 until the P45 boards are released and stable. Anyway, the question is around this whole SATA problem... has it been fixed and if so, what do I need to look for to ensure my copy of this board has the fix.

Does the P5K-Deluxe suffer from them as well or is it just the Premium?

@stepinrazor - I dunno what to tell you about your S3 sleep state problem. Have you tried dumppo.exe to ensure you have S3 available?

I'll try the dumppo.exe when I get home tonight. But man I've tried everything and I've also experienced the SATA issue myself.

I have a 150GB Raptor that works fine in AHCI or RAID, but I also purchased a F1 Samsung 750GB drive and like others have posted, it will not run in AHCI or RAID. I can get it to start the windows install but it will always bluescreen during the install.

I do like the board otherwise as I can get better memory settings and timings at lower voltages on this board then I could with my Maximus Formula.

No definite fix was ever found. Keeping away from Samsung and WD is the only real fix :confused:
The deluxe won't clock you as good as the Premium on a quadcore in most cases

Not fixed. It would be a lottery if you get it or not, it seems.... :shakes:

Stick to Seagate, Maxtor or any SATA 1 drive (including Raptors!) and you should be fine... ;)

P5K Deluxe not affected by this, just the P5K Premium...

I have run WD Raptors; SE16's (AAKS) and the RE2's on my Premium without any problems. Even raid with the AAKS's worked great.

Samsung F1 750 gb also works fine.
Will be going RAID 0 with a pair of Samsung F1 320gb later today :)

Good luck running them on your P5K Premium, although it does sound like you have a good one....;)

You guys need to check out the Intel Matrix RAID on these badboys. Biker, it'll make your results looks slow :)

I tested the above partition with the Jmicron controller and my raid 0 slowed to 145mb/s average then I tested with an Adaptec 4x PCI-E and the average shot up to 199mb/s but my Adaptec card could not partition the drives ....all I could choose was max size.... incompatible Adaptec bios/ software with F1 series..... :(

could some P5K owner tell me what settings to set to go over 1.40v on northbridge please ?

evrytime mine goes over 1.4v ( in bios 1.55 and 1.7 available ) , can't boot anyway

Why do I have to use AFUDOS if I can do that through EZ Flash?

I've recently purchased one of these and I can't get over 410MHz for love nor money with my new Quad.

It either refuses to post or just crashes before it gets to the XP splash screen...

I'm looking for 450x8, can someone list their bios settings for that?

And also, what bios is generally thought of as the best for overclocking FSB and Quads?

Must have a good DLx then , 475ish is indeed my max on quads I owned ,though that's enough for me... and the same CPU's topped out on same FSB on Maximus and MARS mobo's... With the P5K you need to make sure the mosfets are well cooled for the rest best mobo I have ever owned...

I also cooled my mosfets on the premium with some HR-09 + a 90mm fan attached on the NB HR-05 IFX and blowing on the mosfets area. Maybe that's why I can reach such good overclocks on low volts while others are stuck at low performance/high volts (despite the fact that I suerely got a good board)

Anyone have any suggestion on how to bring my Q6600 to 3.6 on my P5K Premium board, what volt and temp should I not exceed in that case.

I have 3.2@1.325 (1.304 in CPU-Z under load) i BIOS and CPU voltage damper enabled and with temp 60 with Prime95 stable and temp different between core 0,1 and 2,3 is less then 5 under load.

My ambient roomtemp is ~20.

I figure 60 is to high@3.2 and it´s due to that I run me scythe@900, well I maybe should test with it at 1200 and see what I get, I most admit that I don´t like to much noice from my PC so I guess it´s a balance between performane and noice.

Perhaps I should ad one more and go push pull on that TRUE, I have it mounted with the heatpipes horizontal position, I found it was better then vertical, it ru´ns cooler that way.

So what do you P5K Premium expert say?

Any suggestions about BIOS settings would be great.

Excellent mobo the P5K dlx, i managed to get 480x8 on my Q6600 L737B...

What's the real difference of the P5K dlx and P5K premium ?

Supposedely better mosfets, I'm not sure about other modifications
Maybe last deluxe boards are as good as Premium

I running the p5k deluxe and its the best clocking board I have ever owned mine will do up to 490 1:1 on my quad.
