I am very pleased with the 3-3-3-2-1T DDR2 times...
This is from an old 680i chipset.
Only 420MHz RAM, on a 3.6GHz C2Q / 450 FSB

I bet, on the X38 (that can handle +600FSB), a DDR2 running @ only ~480MHz 3-3-3-2-1T will perform just like (or better) then the 700MHz CL5 that I have seen here...
Can anyone, with that kind of setup, try it?

I'm pretty sure that 1T isn't possible on any Intel chipset with DDR2.....however I could be wrong.
Intel chipsets benefit from higher frequencies much more than tighter timings (when it comes to bandwidth)
I'd try it.....but I know that I won't POST and I'll have to swap out my value RAM so I can set the voltage, then reboot and install my Ballistix :D
680i loves tight timings
965P, P35, X38 prefer MHz for sure :)
btw some p35 asuses can run with 1T IIRC ;)
I tried 3-2-2-2-1 2T at 450MHz on P35 but I've only seen ASUS offer the option of CR which I didn't have and it wasn't worth it to me more than running 450FSB 1:1 3-3-3-3 2T was. My latency was lower than what you're getting there though IIRC and on this 790FX setup, I've tred 4-4-4-4 1T at 480MHz @ 1.9V and it wasn't worth it for any useful application. I won't try less because it'll need more volts which I don't want to give it. ;)

Never bothered to run any more tests on bandwidth or drop timings and tweak TBH.
My latency is much lower than that....IIRC it was 56.4ns or so. I know I've gottena s low as 55ns on this X38 board. I run 1066 5-5-5-15 35 with the rest set to auto. I don't tweak my memory much, as I really don't run SuperPi.
kte, i think thats cause you used higher fsbs with higher mem clocks for cas4 and cas5 right?
on 680 i think 333 beats 444 and 555 if you use the same fsb and the max speed each timing is stable at.
the problem on intel chipsets is:
1. no command rate 1t, its called cmd 1t but its not really command rate 1t
2. very very few dividers and no dividers below 1:1, so you can run high fsb low mem clock with tight timings...

That's a bit high latency for the CL5 config. :p:
Seems really like 680i likes tighter timings. At least these comparisions speaks so. I haven't tried CL3 timings on my P35 board but at CL4-4-4-8 at or slightly above 500MHz I get worse results than 563MHz 5-5-4-10.

573Mhz 4 4 4 12 2T on my 680i = 9488 read
562MHz 4-4-4-4 2T on your P35 = 10025 read
I still believe, that something arround 480Mhz and 3-3-3-2-1T would perform similar to +700MHz CL5...

You are running on a higher CPU clock and FSB...
The numbers can't be compared... Try doing 8x450 (3.6GHz), and then post the Everest readings...
And also, P35 has some better memory bandwidth / latency over the old 680i...

the 333 was with 1t while the 444 and 555 was with 2t right?
yep 1T only on nForce chipsets , my ABIT AB9PRO had 1T and 2T selectable but choosing 1T made whole setup unstable no matter what memory , also if there was some stability there where no usable benefits of it.

On P35 it won't if you have low timings/subtimings on the +600 run, but it will if you have high timings/subtimings. CAS is only 1 of many parts to your bandwidth/latency. Mine is affected a lot by CR, tRC, tWTR and PL, but the last three more than with CAS or CR.Quote:

i believe the differences we are seeing in bandwidth scores on similar chipsets may be due to the difference in quad and dual core

It sure is a great difference between 1T and 2T on 680i, wow that's some awesome numbers for such low clocks. On Intel board you'd have to have to run really nice ram speeds in order to achieve 10k+ read at 3.6GHz. :D

unfortunately my sticks aren't so great at Cas3 clocking and need more voltage for similar bandwidth and latency as a higher cas.
because of this i tend to use Cas 4 and 5 with lower volts, hopefully for a longer lifetime
The 680i boards are better with bandwidth/latency. That was one of their specialities: memory. Intel with 1:1 is always very good at any FSB. ;)
When I ran 450FSB 1:1 450 4-4-4-4 T2 I had the same SuperPi 1M time as 540 4-4-4-4 T2 as with 562.5 4-4-4-4 T2 and 630 4-4-4-4 T2. 562.5 was actually fastest by 0.1s. I've never really bothered with bandwidth though so not tested many settings I've ran.

Yeah 1T performance really is nice on the 680i.
However, you can run DDR1000 @ CAS 4 with same or fewer voltage... and atleast on my old P965 it was quite fast ;)

Couldn't run 1T higher then ~700 or so but that was just using 2,2V which is perfectly ok for 24/7 use :)
I will be having my X38 here soon so I'll check back.
About Intel and 1T, the Abit IP35 Pro can run 1T up to ~1000 (so I'm hoping the X38 QuadGT can do it as well). However, the performance gain isn't as high as with nvidia.

There are also nice latency sweet spots on the MCH of 680i,if you know where to look you can gain some quite stunning performance linked sync 1T.
I remember seeing 6400MB/s+ in memtest at ddr900ish 1T while testing the DFI 680i...could get no where near that 2t with high clocks but I had to be at a certain FSB where the MCH was probably at a huge clock also
The reason (my guess) why pyro has such good latency is due to tighter timings across the board. I can get about 44.6ns with DDR1000 CAS4 and 1T.
680i certainly are easy to make boot with 1t thats for sure, but you can seriously reduce timings by drastically pulling back sub-timins, especially where you can more than halve them like tRC and tRFC.
Sometime you have to take from peter to give to paul, and occasionally even reducing these subtimings you can lose bandwidth.

Yer but we are talking about the latency before. And the 680i is wicked for getting low latency, usually much better than P35. I did'nt think DDR3 even on a P35 would have so little latency. The read and write can be done with DDR2 on a 680i but not with that low latency.
And when I lower deviders yer my read, write and copy go up, but I get latency up to 60ns.

3-2-2-1 1T 450MHz should be good. Phenom gets plus 11k read DDR2-1066 5-5-5-15 CR2 with ganged mode in Sandra (EVEREST doesn't support it properly) which is double what an Intel CPU/chipset would get at that spec.

O ok, I have no worries running +2.5v for benching. Normally the 680i boards overvolts dimms anyway, and dont droop or change, if anything they raise under load, which is probably why they clock betterwhen comparing a P35 against 680i at 2.3 volts bios You would have to put bios to about 2.225V with a 680i to run 2.3v real. It will depend on how far vender differes from reference design though.

i have both DFI ICFX3200 and dfi 680i,and my findings with both boards running my Cellshock DDR1000 CAS4, using 2.25V also.the 680i can hit 1t on any speed to about ddr900 without flaking out without crazy voltage hence not realistic for long term usage.but the 680i seems to stably shine (10k+ read) running 2.2v running under ddr 850 1t for 24\7 use and runs AMAZING.but the dfi 680i has some issues including no boot issues sometimes and dreaded code 88 rendering the board unbootble without bios chip swap.shame cause the board could be so much more if some bugs were ironed out plus its sli.Quote:

hmm, this is strange, it won't pass the code 95 with 1T, no matter I throw at it, 3.6GHz, even with driving strength 4, timmings 5-5-5-15 (and that was desperate), even if I raise the NB + related voltages, I've tried everything, no go.
It seems I get best results with 535MHz CAS4 tight timmings, read = 8820MB/s 13.250s 1M Pi, will tweak that for now.

I am no expert on this stuff so please don't think I'm questioning your above post but given the results in this thread along with others I have not seen this to be true. The net Read/Write numbers seem to be considerably higher on 680i tests compared to at least the P35 numbers (not familiar with X38 data yet). Of course the whole problem could be that the results in this thread along with my own testing just didn't use properly tuned DRAM settings which I guess could account for the large difference between results. Eva do you happen to have any results you could post or link to which show some of these higher Read/Write/Latency resultts with X38 or P35? Believe me I really want to know because I'd love to figure out why I can't come close to even 10.5k with Read/Write or a Latency of under even 48ns with my P35 but could easily perform past those numbers with 680i? Thanks for the help and clarificaiton, much appreciated!
Edit: I didn't take into account the "clock for clock" aspect of what you said Eva which just got me thinking. The results I attained on my 680i were done running 1:1 (at least with my highest results). Although I ran similar clockspeed, memspeed, timings, and FSB the memclock ratio was not the same? That could account for some of the difference I'm seeing couldn't it?
Forgot to add while everest read seem to have high numbers on 680i chipset it doesn't translate well to actual performance in memory bandwidth intensive apps like super pi.. So P35 with lower mem bandwith latency than 680i will still out perform 680i chipset.
Both 680i and P35/X38's bandwidth also depends on FSB and cpu speed as well

Very true, after noticing the difference in bandwidth between the two chipsets I also noticed how much faster the P35 is in apps like SuperPI (especially anything over 2M or so). My 32M time decreased by 1min21sec on this board compared to my old 680i! Like you have already explained, this board really shines once your able to start getting the memory setup correclty!

680i / p35 / x38 performance is pretty much the same.
0 - 3% avarage difference clock for clock on games, apps, etc.
If 680i could overclock a yorkfield, I am pretty sure someone like K|ngp|N would top the ORB with ultra's SLI and today's vcard drivers.
And that is with DDR2 too.

However high single-thread memory bandwidth on 680i may be, in multi-threaded scenario with C2Q it lags very bad behind P35/X38, being almost 2x (two) times! slower.
Given that many number-crunching apps. with todays Intel C2Q CPUs are limited by available memory bandwidth, 680i is a very bad choice for those.
Well, beat this stuff from Pyro, with P35/X38 DDR2/FSB @ 450MHz and CPU @ same clock.

What is to beat here? Single-threaded benchmark? Didn't i say 680i is good in single-threaded scenario? It is also may be good enough with Core2 Duo.
But with Core2 Quad, in multi-threaded scenario... its performance is simply abysmal.
Please run RightMark Multi-Threaded Memory test, here is the instruction:

You can also try to run Winrar multi-threaded bench.
Compare with similarly clocked memory on P35/X38 and see how bad 680i is!

Perhaps not all that impressive compared to some other chipsets, but pretty good for DDR2-667 ram. I tried 1T command rate, but it would only boot at 740Mhz with poor results. I will try with Cas4 and Cas3 to see what she'll do.

I dropped the FSB to 450Mhz with 4-4-4 and reduced all the subtimings as suggested, but my latency increased from 52ns to 66ns with a 20% drop in my read/write scores, compared to 625Mhz with 5-5-5?
Can you get 500 mhz with 4-4-4? Because there are certain frequencies that work well with certain CAS latency settings. I will look something up and get back to you.

I tried tightening the timings to 4-4-4 @ 540Mhz, but the latencies and memory performance was still 15% lower than at 5-5-5 @ 625Mhz. According to the chart the 4-4-4 should be faster, but not with my setup. I also reduced all the sub-timings but the seem to have little effect on latency.
I just realised your useing a P35... I'm not sure where the strap change is, in fact I don't know much about how to get good latencies with it, I have not played with them alot. Put tRAS to 12, will help a little. and also yuou may need to do subtimings, I have done some small changes to those. I also use 1t, I dont think many P35 will do that though.

Mine looks pretty low compared to the previous Phenom I tested which was 108xxMB/s at 440 4-4-4-4 1T with 1980MHz IMC. Anyway, just throwing an AMD sample in there. :D
No its not worth it to run those timings with this CPU unless you're work application covers rendering/encoding/decoding/compressing/decompressing.
EDIT: this is with the TLB errata patch. Without it, we're talking plus 12k.
