In my experience, this guy is slightly AMD/ATI biased, so a big pinch of salt here guys, and might be nothing more than a BIOS update required...but...

Rahul Sood, founder of VoodooPC, and now CTO of HP's Gaming division, has explained that the reason HP have delayed releasing their PC's with Intel's 45nm QX9650 CPU because 'certain non-Intel chipsets' are 'unstable'.

Obviously he means nVidia, but 6-series or 7-series?

If I'm not mistaken there have been people on those boards that have had "ES" 45nm chips for a while and used them on Nvidia boards.

Known "compatibility" issues are nFORCE related, and will be solved with a few BIOS updates.
Other than that...gee, their running fine on P35 + X38.

I guess it is Intel's turn to play hardball. I'm just speculating, but I always thought Intel could kill Nvidia's chipset anytime it chooses to. I don't think Nvidia accounts for much Intel CPU sales; besides, Intel stands to profit ultimately if it eliminates a rival chipset.

Obviously, I don't know how Intel shares its CPU architectural information with third-party companies like Nvidia, or how soon it does so. In my opinion, this could be crucial to companies like Nvidia who have to guarantee compatibility with future chips from Intel. In any case, the fastest way to get SLI on mainstream Intel platform besides buying out Nvidia, will be to cripple and kill Nvidia's chipset department.

He could have just said:

Where did you see AMD biased? He says just there is no problem with intel 45nm and intel chipset but with some others... What a discover... Sometimes some doesn't understand why some have buy intel cpu when amd had the performance crow (and no stable chipset) :shrug:

Nothing much in the article itself, apart from the questionable reason to publish this for the world instead of explaining the reasons when they finally did launch.

For proof of AMD bias, read some of his other articles. It's clear as day.

As I said before, hopefully just a BIOS update required. Anyone else know anything about the 'instability' he's talking about?

The instability is a true fact for some non Intel chipsets. Some i know testing that new Nvidia chipset has had issues with it and has gone back to 65nm testing on it

Rahul is overall a good guy, but a self admitted fan of AMD and he makes sure that is understood when he writes certain editorials.

He is biased toward AMD, and he is disappointed with AMD's performance and Intel's rise in dominance, and has stated such a few times.

Frankly, that article was more of what we need -- to stand up and demand better of AMD as the competitive gap is widening and hope for catching up is slowly fading. A non-competitive AMD is not good for the industry.

Nonetheless, it does not surprise me that someone of the higher echelon of the AMD camp tries to downplay or put some spots on the 45 nm launch. Obviously there are instability problems with a 3rd party chipset, not so much a problem with the CPU but a problem with the CPU+chipset combo (we can only assume nVidia and SLI related configuration as he is a boutique builder).

Frankly, I see this as poor form and lack of professionalism on Rahul's part where it is obviously a chipset problem but he would rather peg it to Intel.

no worries... Rahul is the former owner and president of VoodooPC, a small but successful boutique PC build-to-order maker. They were acquired by HP last year and, thus, the means by which he acquired his current title.

He has been in the industry for quite sometime and is a well known character in the enthusiast underground so to speak.

The issue is the reference nVidia board(s). If he used Asus striker extreme he wouldnt have a problem.

Also, HP uses the striker extreme for both SLI and CF computers so I think they've tried it ;)

Does anyone have any percentage differentials on the frame rate hit running CF on an nForce chipset has? The Blackbird implements this, as we know, but are they doing it via xDNA drivers, and if so, what's the difference between it and a high end Intel or ATI chipset?

There is probably no measurable difference from running CF on a nForce chipset. It's just drivers and BIOS' that are restricting it.

You hear wrong. If there were manufacturing problems the wolfdales and notebook parts, which are much much higher volume, would not be launching on time. They are. That you would respond to manufacturing problems by delaying a single digit percentage of your launch makes no sense.

Maybe Asus just makes the BIOSes for fun then to support it on the Striker Extreme :rolleyes:

Also if you knew, it is not the chipset thats the issue with yorkfield on i680. But nVidia board design that everyone, cept Asus uses.

i can buy 45nm xeons and Xtreme Cpus now, and im sure intel will deliver all other 45nm in 1Q... so nothing delayed here... :confused:

You should check your hearing more often then.There are plenty of reviews out there , either by HW sites or individual users ( quite a few here too ) which show 45nm CPUs clocking nicely and having far better perf/watt than anything we've seen before.

Secondly , the way Intel actually develops a new process more or less makes it fault-proof.

Thirdly , Intel started 45nm mass production in September with FAB D1D.

I remember folks at Tech Report, Ars and other sites saying, "Come On AMD, show us the goods". Others like Rahul and Kyle seemed like they were working for AMD's PR dept.

Rahul also trashed guys here when the first Conroe Tests showed up.

AMD still has some big performance gains with AM2, we are talking about a new platform with low latency DDR-2 support along with new processors. While I’d love to tell you how much performance difference this would give you on a clock to clock basis, I’m afraid you’ll have to use your imaginations for now.

First of all, Happy New Year.

I saw that too JJ. I think its somewhere too. When AMD first sued Intel, HP was one of the first examples Intel held up. HP is still Intel's Number One partner and the ties go deeper than Dell. HP is in it with Intel on Chipsets, Helped R&D on Itanium, and etc.... IBM sells more AMD Servers last I heard/read.

Didn't you like that Double standard? Here we Had Fugger, FCG, and many others testing Conroe and Rahul doubted their legitimacy. Yet, he swears AMD had killer tech he never touched, saw independent tests of and etc..... He not only Cheerleaded for Barcelona, he did the same thing for AM2, 4X4, and 65nm K8's. I honestly think he, Kyle and a few others are too smart to miss this badly. They're either thinking with their Hearts that belong to AMD or they're paid by AMD. He runs a company that profit from computer sales, cant trust such biased position.

In regard to amd, they had a 3 year run and still they did fail to convince the consumer how good their chips was to intels.
It takes time and good marketing skills to sell a solution and then be able to back it up with hardware.

Maybe they re-design the company and go more graphics than cpu.

It makes be wonder how Voodoo became so "respected" when their CEO is so biased. Yes, he had good reason to be, but not anymore.


AMD never had a good marketing department, nor did they ever make an effort to fix that problem. They did recently hire a marketing man from Intel, but that hasn't done anything :down:

AMD didn't have a 3 year, the A64 and P4 were ALWAYS app Dependant and that's what kept all of the flame wars going. AMD ruled nothing until X2 shipped and then they were priced out of a lot folks budget. AMD did well in the Server market for 3 years because A64 scaled better. This didn't do much for them on the desktop. P4 still ruled the Multimedia world and some other streaming apps. Northwood C's rocked. AMD ran raw or poor optimized apps and games better more times than not. And even more importantly P4 enjoyed much more stable chipsets and motherboards as a whole. Consumers aren't as stupid as most Geeks think they are. I do mean all consumers from Head IT folks ordering 1000's or a soccer Mom buying one.

Because most Gamers are in the middle as was stated earlier. They buy what's faster and don't love AMD or Intel. Voodoo did it's best when AMD offered the best Gaming Processor. He's also a business man and reluctantly went with Conroe and complained for having to do so. Others at Voodoo PC don't agree with him. It's not like he does it alone.
