Is it worth while to get a X38 that allows for current use of DDR2 or just go with DDR3? If DDR3 what are the benefits besides getting 1333 system bus with Dram Frequency?

Maximus Formula here. So DDR2.
If I had the spare cash I'd have gone for a P5E3 instead...
what about the maximus extreme thats a beast but it has ddr3 so thats $850 for MB and a good 2gb of cell shock and thats not worth it
I'm waiting for the DDR3 prices to low a bit and then i'll buy a maximus extreme too.
i got the p5e3 deluxe and the cellshock, but i got a crappy board, it wont hit 500fsb stable, while i KNOW that the cpu does with ease...soo Maximus Extreme is due in stock here tomorrow, (monday 12th) thinking of changinf mb.
this one lacks of measurements, like SB PWM, Vdimm measures, dont like it, i do want to see vdimm etc...didnt know that when i bought it , ahh well :)
still is a solid board tough...the cellshock maxes the board, not otherwise :P

Makes me wonder why people are buying Maximus Formula SE over the Maximus Formula if they don't plan on water cooling the chipset. :shrug: I don't see any other difference between those boards. As for the Maximus extreme I have to ask if that's any better then the P5E variants?Quote:

I preffer X38 w/DDR3 but DDR3 is waaaaay too expensive, so I bought Maximus Formula.
I would venture a guess that Asus does a bit of validation testing on the chipsets as they come in and they put the slightly better ones in the ROG line. But the margins they see there are probably so small that they wash out in the data once people buy them and stick a retail CPU in.Quote:

Interesting, thanks for the info Blauhung and zanzabar. If money is no issue I guess DDR3 would be the way to go. However, the problem is that DDR3 offers no real advantage until it's OC. And, if you do get DDR3 1800 seems to be the best performing ram and you are future proofing yourself if Intel decides to go 1600 (some claim would have come sooner if AMD was more competitive...I honesty don't know). But if I were to buy DDR3 the Dominator TWIN3x2048-1800C7DF G would be my bet. But you have to actually ask yourself, "Is the amount of money worth the level of performance DDR3 offers over DDR2?" Does anyone (the review is found in the link of this post) offers any tangible reinforcement that suggests that DDR3 is the way to go?

I think the ROG boards are a "little" more handpicked in some kind of way..
they are not the worst as we can get with a "vanilla" card etc...but hey who knows? and the ROG series follows with more bling bling aswell, and more FAN headers, more measure points etc.. more volt options, en perhaps a liiiiitle more OC friendly... that is what i think, and why its coming after p5e3, may be that its more picked and fixed? hehhe we can still hope thats its just NOT a marketing thing :P

sure its expensive, and an avarage computer joe will not need ddr3.. it was the same story with the ddr2 when it came out same price, same suspusios thaughts about it, but look at it now?

ddr3 are the new shajt .. lets face it people :) ddr2 cant compete anymore..
just bye the same cpu clock ddr3 beats ddr2 with 30s sometimes more, and that is quite a lot :)
And as for the Extreme MB, here in swe they have setup Prel, stock at tomorrow..
but we should never count on that, sometimes its correct sometimes it can take a week more..
just wait and see :)
EDIT: checked it out a little more, seems like more at nov 19-20, but some have set it earlier..

looks like DDR2 is taking a comfortable lead.
I replaced my P5W DH Deluxe with a P5E and I'll post my findings soon :)
x38 w/ddr2 for now, sometime in early 08 i will make the switch to ddr3 and x48...?
will ddr2 work with the ddr3 maximus extreme mobo? so that if i wanted to upgrade to ddr3 i could?
No the Maximus Extreme is DDR3 only. And the Maximus Formula is DDR2 only.

Some x38 boards offer both, I know the Gigabyte P35C-DS3R does (if I remember right). I have the abit IX38 and really like it with DDR2, but I upgrade every two years or so and move to the latest and greatest.
That's what I did. Got a crappy P5E3 Deluxe, wouldn't clock my q6600 over 460 fsb and wouldn't max out my Corsair DDR3 1800 ram either. Traded it for a Maximus Extreme and couldn't be more pleased --- memory performance rocks, and I booted by quad core processor at 500 fsb for the first time ever. Chipset latencies are really tight too. Love the board.Quote:
