output is what makes one first, and another second tier among mobo manufacturers.
I my book DFI is absolutely first, but this is how market segmentation is done.

I'd like to get either the MSI or the DFI methinks. The Abit as well, if it performs, although I will need to give it a paper bag as it were... :p:

Soyo+solid caps would be winner, atleast in layout and without 1337 copper lollerblades. DFI would ne nice if they wwould use copper heatsinks like (i)CFX3200.
But why the heck they put copper hell on these chipsets that can be cooled passive with small heatsink?

I like the looks of value motherboards for Phenom, especially JetWay and SOYO. Both have 5 Phase CPU power circuity, only ECS is using 4 Phases... (which equals to todays 3 phases, as 1 additional is required to support Split Power Plane).

I had SOYO boards for Pentium (Socket 5) and K6-2. They are probably concentrating on Asia market and Eastern Europe. Cheap but solid boards....

Look at the black PCI-E port on the Soyo. It says Physics right above it!
BTW the layout on the ABIT looks good for 2way crossfire setup and is that 8-Phase power i see?

looks like abit have gone back to their roots for the PCB - you get to like it after a few years.
Wouldn't have gone for green RAM slots & blue heatsinks myself but ...
& Soyo are coming back for another crack at mobos - wonders will never cease :p:

Haven't seen a Soyo in years. I wonder if they'll still call them dragons. I like the looks of the Asus, but the MSI's layout is better, at least if you're interested in quad-fire. The DFI layout for a tri-fire looks nice. I do wish they'd go away from the yellow and green glow in the dark stuff though. In the end just give me what works the best, even if its plain old green, like the reference board.

nice thread. Good pics. I think I am gonna go with the MSI most probably. I had the K9A platinum and it was a MONSTER clocker. The only thing it lacked was low Vdimm voltage. 2.3V max. If MSI fixed that in this board , it would be one hell of a clocker. Its the chipset really. The older 580x and the newer 7xx series are just monster clockers.

You are mistaken. There are 4 right angle SATA ports on the edge of the board.
Can you imagine? A cutting edge board with 3 video slots, but only 2 sata ports. LOL

Presumably a Sata controller that's "external" to the chipset to add 2 more ports. If you look at the boards closely you'll note they're all (4+ x) sata ports so the AMD chipset presumably has 4 built in and DFI (wisely IMO) chose to add another controller to the board. I didn't see who's chip was added...the chip nearest the two sata ports in question is a VIA chip.

Soyo also had socket 939 and AM2 motherboards but were very rare in Europe and in the USA.
The only AM2 and 939 i saw were owned by a dude that brought them home with him form a trip to Asia.
And if im not mistaken they were also purple and called Dragon.
I bet the chance of seeing one of their AM2+ offerings in the US or in Europe is just as big as seeing their AM2 and 939 offerings.
Atm the pre-order prices overhere are a bit wacky.
The top Gigabyte board costing over 200 euro and the top MSi board costing 140 euro.
And i got the feeling that the Gigabyte price is inflated bigtime cause it was the first one for pre-order.
So if Phenom prices r low the mobo+CPU combo from AMD could be pretty cheap.

i hope abit comes out with another version of a 7000 series board. Still don't understand how ECS is 1st, and abit/dfi are second tier.

In wich Tier u belong is decided by how many boards u sell (market share).
ECS sells alot of OEM and especialy in Asia.
To us overclockers Abit and DFi ofc are big names but thats it.

my attention span is pretty terrible, I read through the explanation, then forgot about it. Still, good to know Abit has a board lined up.

They are. Except the ones by the 24Pin Mobo connector doesn't look solid. Really can't tell from the angle.

The big boys all went with the 4pin CPU power connector, while the others went with 8. Interesting.
Also, the Sapphire and DFI board are exactly the same. DFI is making Sapphire's board.

I feel you, no need for those crazy cooling contraptions on a chipset that puts out 9W. I'll take the passive aluminum sink, I have the airflow to keep it really cool.
I'm most interested in the Biostar and Abit boards, but I think that perhaps Jetway, Soyo, or SuPox might offer some decent boards for the money. I'm sure there will be a Gigabyte board with a sane cooling solution and slightly less features (like a DS3 version) in the $100 range.

The abit 770 based board looks excellent in its layout. I wonder if it is a stellar overclocker? I eagerly await the company's 790FX board...
