Do NOT upgrade to X38 chipset from P35!

All over the net, including myself, have seen that the performance increase is soo negligible that there is really no reason why anyone who is already on the P35 chipset platform needs to upgrade this year.

The X38 is a 'pocket money gap filler' for the companies that was rushed out to make up for the Intel xmas-shopping season and also (Asus, Giga, Abit in early Nov, and DFI in mid Nov).

My advice...

Wait for the new season, when the X48 chipset hits prime time with the new Yorkie chips!

If your computer is currently work, or even if you are building a new one. DO NOT waste your money on these shabby X38 boards. Stick to a P35 based board and a fancy quad, overclock the hell out of it - done deal.

X38 hype - was just that - hype! not a 20% increase in performance as you would expect in new chipsets at any level.... tighter timings configurability yep, but only with certain sticks, and even then, not all four slots, so then you got less ram if you use two slots and if you want 2gig sticks then you cant run as phat a timings as you'd like to....

I'm RMA'ing my Maxi-pain-in-the-butt-arse today, and sticking with the P5K Premium which I bought the other day to do some comparison testing on.

IF you really MUST throw cash at something which brings no more than a few extra points in 3DMarks and about roughly 0.3millisecs better times in SuperPI, then go for it... enjoy!

it clocks quads much better and im curently using 4 sticks of ram just fine...

Yeah, 4 Sticks works, if you can cool the chipset well enough, and the stock cooling on my board was just not enough. I could not run my system @ stock settings...stock cooling...but I'm priming 515x7 1:1 now, 4 sticks of D9GMH. Was priming 450x8 and 582mhz mem last night, again, 4 sticks of D9GMH @ 582mhz...

But this is keeping the chipset under 50c. If mine goes over 50c, no stability can be found, period.

Is the board faster than P35? Not really. in #d, runing Crossfire, it's a wee bit faster, but nothing to call home for.

If I was building now and was looking at a crossfire solution, then I would get an X38. But for someone who has an P35 or even an 965, its just not worth it, at least in my eyes.

No complaints on X38 at all... 4GB of ram just fine, and it clocks like a dream. RAM takes less voltage to be stable than it did on P5K Premium in fact.

Funny I skipped P35 & X38 altogether (except for the asus P5K-VM). The DFI P965-S Dark I have clocks my b3 Quad to 3.3Ghz on air & 3.5Ghz on water. After being dissapointed with DFI's RD600 after so much hype, and both abit & dfi's 680i quad performance I'm not as eager to jump on new chipsets anymore. I'm gonna wait for 780i and Tri SLI.

im rather pleased with the x38.


biggest advantage anyway is the x16*2 slots for when ATI releases a decent card :)

x38 chipset only cost ~10 bucks more for mobo makers... we will see prices come down to near P35 levels.

I have to agree with him , if you have a p35 now i personally dont think its worth the extra , i sold my stuff on so it wasnt to much expense , but to lay out a load of dosh i would think twice tbh

Let's take it from my perspective, I love to mess with new hardware, and sell the board half a year later ususally to get new toys... my view on the X38 a slightly improved P35 but with the added PCI lanes very important to Crossfire users, I just want to see what this baby does with the upcoming CPU's... my Maximus is coming on Monday , eve if it performs on par with my P5K DLx I'll be happy, just a new experience that's all... banging the same wife all the time get's pretty boring after a while doesn't it

And to be honest, clock for clock nothing has changed much coming from P5W, do we really see a big speed increase coming from 975 to P35 ? ( meaning running eg a CPU at 9 X 400 with ram at 800mhz ), nope, just the overclocks get more easy and the boards seem more reliable too... luckily for Crossfire users they really get a good speed increase with these chipsets...

I was really worried when I saw the thread , more thinking of huge probs that arose from the X38 chipset... :shocked:

I already have a P35 board so unless I get an X38 board for free, I'm not upgrading for a while. I'm waiting for the Q9450 Yorkie to launch--then I can swap out CPUs (after I get this PC running) and have a hell of a time overclocking.

From what I've seen I'd agree that there's no point upgrading to x38 from P35. But if you don't have either u might as well go x38. From what I've seen they're not much more expensive.

PCI-E 2.0 is a good incentive.

Here in canada the P5E and P5k Deluxe differ by like 5 bucks.

If you ask me by the time x48 is mainstream they'll already be changing sockets.

I haven't had a go with X38 yet, but I've had a few mid-range P35 boards (P35-DS3P, P5K-E, IP35-E), and have just put my main system back on my 965 QuadGT.

I love my board too, and I come from a P5K Deluxe. I have a much better "quality feel" over the Maximus and it is still new. With Loadline Calibration enabled, the vdroop is rock stable, I never seen that kind of vdroop stability before, and deffently not on P5K Deluxe with its Voltage Damper thing. The bios still needs to get mature. Lets see in 1-2 months, most bugs will be fixed. Mayby even get better performance, as the Asus bios engineers get better and better knowning the X38 chipset over time.

Well, would it be any wonder if Intel changes sockets next year......don't know if Intel will, but it could happen.

Consider.....Intel has been producing LGA775, or Socket T (775), motherboards since 2004. The LGA775 socket has been around since 2004 on various chipsets....like the 865/875, 915/925, 945/955/975, 965, G/P33, P35 and now the X38. The darned socket has had a four year run and is still going quite strong.

Contrast that to AMD's various sockets on their chips during that time period.....socket 754, 939, AM2 and AM2+ and the upcoming AM3, which won't be compatible with AM2 cpus. The vaunted 939 managed to last two years as AMD's main socket.....2004 through 2006.....and despite AMD's assurances that 939 wouldn't be short lived, it was abandoned quite quickly....as sockets go.

So, personally, the socket 775 has had quite a run.....

What about if I upgrade to the new 9800 GTX? Isn't that PCI-E 2.0 and X38 is the only board no with 2.0.

Or is 2.0 simply going to be no different performance-wise than?

the DFI P35 has zero vdroop when its enabled so thats not really an advantage of x38 chipset.i will stick with this board until X48. hopefully that isnt all hype.

No intention of upgrading for under 5% improvement. It's just silly to do so.

After all the reading I have been doing I think I will stick with my 975 chipset for now.

I have a question about the X38. It has 2 pci-express slots that are 16X each. Can I run a raid card (which is an 8X pci-express card) in one of the slots and a video card in the other? I know this sounds like a noob question, but I just want to make sure before I pull the trigger on one.

Check out the Asus Maximus Formula SE. It's got built in water cooling for the NB. I'm upgrading from a 975 board (Asus P5WDG2 WS). From what I've read there will actually be BIOS settings that can be changed in Windows for the NB. This is a step up from 975 chipset IMHO. Still have yet to test the mobo, it's coming next week. I bought it because it sounds like it has alot of potential, they just need to iron out the BIOS...

Hmm, reading through Lawry's P5W DH deluxe thread i see there's a 45nm bios which leads me to believe it does support Penryn CPU's.

DDR 3 is just not mainstream yet and if prices won't come down anytime soon, DDR 2 is the only right choice.

That said, 975 chipset is still king with 1:1 FSB/mem ratio for benchmarks like SuperPi but also in 3D benches.

Coming from a P5W dh deluxe, i have a hard time matching SuperPi results with my P5K-E wifi, especially at 1:1 ratio it seems an impossible task.

Whoever is having a laugh at 975 boards probably never explored it's potential.

I don't have the cash to go to ddr3. But as was said earlier in superPI the 975 will hang in with the new chipsets. It will do crossfire, just not a 16x and 16x. But I don't run crossfire so no big deal. I am just going to wait it out for awhile.
To be honest when I buit this rig I moved up from a P4 running on a P4P800E Deluxe. That tells you something about the gains that I would like to see.

X38 has a lot of advantages over other chipsets for benchers and this forum is full of people that bench hardware a lot

it clocks CPUs and RAM higher. RAM timings tighter and produces some monster scores in all the benchmarks

wait till you fellas see a thread later on today what X38T-DQ6 gigabytes do.....kick arse :D:D:D and aussie prices on Gigabyte at least are about the same as P35 when first introduced so while Asus is trying to sell theirs at some ridiculous prices you can stick with other brands which aren't ripped people off blind......i love asus boards and have always used them and still do but after seeing some buy prices on wholesaler price lists last week i was shocked to see P5E3 DLX WIFI at such high prices....they will basically retail in Australia around US$450:eek:

And how would those readings be recognizable different with the normal use of a computer, compared to my current readings? I think it’s a crock of crap, all these synthetic bench tests, and different programs to compare every little iota! You would NEVER see the difference with the human eye….

Buy what you want, set it up how you want, and use it! My current set-up is rock solid, and stable as can be! H2O cooled, it run awesome!

Well the real answer is... you probably will not see any difference at all. But being that this is largely a Benching/Overclocking community we will take anything that goes faster synthetically even if we cannot tell the difference in system performance from 8500MB/s read to 9k MB/s read on RAM, or even latencies :)

We wouldnt be very extreme if we didnt want to go that extra 100mhz on CPUs or RAM or take those tenths of a second, or hell even a full second off calculations of Pi :up:

I was poking fun at the TRIAL VERSION stamped across a few of your readings since your using trial Everest :D

P965 -> X38 is a definate upgrade in terms of performance, but again visibly in real life application there really isnt a need for it :)

i say forget keeping up with guys here;)..do what gets you excited with your hardware....for me, i like trying new things even if i break even on performance from the previous board to a newer board.

You're right Q9450 it is. My E6600 @ 3.5GHz will hold me over. Definitely.

4. the six pack joe and myself are going for p35 and ddr2 until x38 have matured and prices goes down since the performance is not worth to pay for, its not big enough step to justify the change.

Humanity have always strived to find out whats behind the unknown so I guess this forum is like that for some, finding it out about the unknown, how far can we go....

When I get carried away I just cast my mind to people dying in iraq or other places and find out that even if my overclock isnt that xtreme its good enough for me ;)

people here also tend to forget, really a lot of ppl reading stuff here who even dont overclock...:shock2:

said that, I enjoy seeing pushing the edge in hardware, its silly since its just stuff people can do.
Humanity have always strived to find out whats behind the unknown so I guess this forum is like that for some, finding it out about the unknown, how far can we go....

When I get carried away I just cast my mind to people dying in iraq or other places and find out that even if my overclock isnt that xtreme its good enough for me ;)

I be enjoying testing my abit board when it arrives tomorrow.

Fact of the matter is this, Motherboard and quad core overclocking is a very immature concept and it will be about another year before you can get something that can handle it for long term without blowing the board up.

Now if all you want to do is blow sh*t up then theres plenty of options currently available because overall it just puts too much strain on the NB /Memory controller and the rest of the voltages across the board to compensate.

If my P5W did 400 FSB with my q6600 I wouldn't even had considered going680i, P35 got me the same and better clocks with less heat and far easier setup ( so to my liking seems more reliable ) and now I move onto X38 just to replace the Striker... do I see much benefit of all that cash I put into it , not really but it's nice to fiddle around with hardware and most of my friends run my older boards... and they get them at a good price :)

But all in all for the normal PC user that doesn't do overclocking there's isn't much benefit going from one mobo to another... but for the freaks each point is a big step forward... but it' s nice to see what happens when peeps push their boards, this forum is such a rich informative environment to get input on any matter... overclocker or not...

I just think we can repeat this thread on several types of mobo's/chipsets that were or are being released...

I'm usually the first one one board witn these new chipsets, but this one doesn't lure me away from my p5k dlx. If I needed a new board right now I'd get teh p5E dlx, but since I don't I alos will look at X48 when it comes out. Now yorkfield is another issue! :D

What board are you using now? From what I have seen alot of BIOS's have added support for 45nm even as old as P5B Deluxe.

Gigabyte GA-965P-S3 (rev. 1.0) doesn't support 1333 FSB CPU's and Gigabyte will never add this support. :shrug:
So I def need a new mobo, but I don't mind buying a new one as long as the purchase can be justified.
This E6600 & GA-965P-S3 couple has treated me well, I think they deserve to die togheter, don't You think?! :bsod:

Two of my least favorite components right now are my Asus P5E (X38), and my Corsair Dominator 8500Ds. Well, just this evening, after fighting the system for two days, I set the strap to 333, CPU vcore 1.300, mem to 2.34 and pushed the fsb to 410 and was greeted with this:

Edit: Everything else was set to auto

Edit: I know, my chip rocks! :cool: I think its still quite early, at least let's wait till bioses mature. I'm beginning to revere my board now.

This is where it topped out, or rather there was a strap change here. When I get adventurous enough I will try to run a little higher manually. I haven't tried benching yet since I'm waiting for something to blow any second. I noticed, ATi control panel failed to load. But, it is good enough for MS Paint, and IE7 since I'm posting in this thread with this setting right now.

Bios settings:

vcore: 1.352 (1.375 set in bios)
vdimm: 2.4 set in bios
NB: 1.59 set in bios

Everything else auto

i didnt bother with p965/p35 im sure im missing one since 975x

Well, I must say, I did the P35-to-X38 upgrade, and haven't had a second thought about it.

I'm torn right now only because x48 seems to be coming shortly after x38, but i'm not sure what kind of difference we will see between the two.
