Intel can't loose. This project is mostly for showing their superiority in the chip marked and not just for profits. I don't think they will fail...

Intel got an advantage that can counter any technology lack. Manufactoring capability and advances. So it would roughly be like a 65nm(55nm optical) vs 45nm process. Along with better and cheaper production.

The fun is if the design is a winner too. Then it will dominate any competition fast.

My main hope with this is tho, that we can get rid of the super power hungry GPUs once and for all.

More competition is welcome to me, I wanna see more of power efficient gfx cards and lower highend prices. :D

I would say the major problems will still rest on driver development.

At this point I would venture a guess that the actual GPU uArch is more then capable at matching if not totally beating AMD/Nivida. It all depends on all the new folks at our Visual Computing Group (some of which is located at the same site as me, I just haven't been able to strike up a conversation with them:p:) being able to put together a fully functional dx10.1/11 3D driver that hopefully even scales to more then one card. You know how hard that's been for AMD/Nvidia to do since the release of Vista......

I think that basicaly M$, Intel, and IBM should join forces.
That would be the end-all, be-all Company.

I wouldnt get my hopes up yet.Intel have tried before.

I dont think its a matter of ball size anymore for intel, have you seen their reason profit charts? What else are you gona do with those billions.

I spoke with some Intel guys recently and they all expect this to be a beast of their card. Won't doubt them either: their knowledge is unmatched when it comes to PC hardware and they've been good with supporting their platforms in the past. It's expected halfway through 2008 with likely street dates in Q3/Q4 of 08 and they fully expect it to shake up the GPU industry.

If only they were any good at regular or even decent GPU drivers though. That is their weakest link as far as I can see.

Agreed..No matter what you have you want the next latest,greatest item.
I'm sitting here with a Q6600 that will bench at over 4000 and runs loaded 24/7 at 3600, 2 clovertown machines that do the same at over 3150 and a little dual sossaman machine that is one of those almost perfect designs and what am I doing? Drooling over Hipro's 4600+ on air with the QX9650, dreaming of a SkullTrail system and waiting to get a look at a dual nehalem system with 16 cores on one board!:D

Man... I hope it's priced low and beats ATI/NVIDIA to force a price drop for future high end models. Hmm... I can see stronger integrated graphics coming after. HTPC/SFF fans rejoice!

What's wrong with their drivers that makes them not even decent? If anything, they've done a great job wringing performance out of a part not meant for serious gaming.

Many of us are tired of these GPU dinosaurs, consuming half of the system power use while sitting in standby and browsing the net, only to see it jump another 50% when gaming :(

I'll buy one even if it will only compete in mid-high range, cause it will definetly offer better efficiency, and that is something AMD/Nvidia will try and hide, but loose the battle in OEM market.

You know that whatever Intel would come out with will ALSO consume a sh1t ton of power, right?

The first Intel disgrete GPU is tragetted in the 300$ and down range. So there wont be a performance crown right away.

Didn't know they were aiming towards the high end market... Hope they are successful so ATI & NVIDIA have to lower their prices

If this is true then I hope Nvidia starts making processors real soon.

This is just one step in making more components in house.

Ultimately you`ll be able to make entire systems with products from a single company such as Intel, same thing AMD will do if its still around by then.

I wont put much faith into it till i see some game benches.

In the past other companies also said that their upcoming hardware will kick ass and in the end their products pretty much sucked.
I remember when XGI announced that they would soon release their Volari line up of cards and how good it would be and that within a few years theyd be as big as ATi and Nvidia etc.

Were is XGI now?

Those guys at XGi also had skills and were talented but their product stil failed.
Ofc Intel cant be compaired to them seeing Intel has way more money and can steal away the engineers and other personel they require form other companies.
Do hope Intel manages to go head to head with AMD/ATi and Nvidia.

While ATI and Nvidia put their chips on $100 boards and a few $200-$300 boards, XGI has its chips on multiple 4-way and 8-way high end Xeon and Opteron motherboards, each of which are around $400, to give you an idea on margins.

Please do your research before making blanket statements.

i know this ;) i do actualy read articles on the internet every once in a while.

But did i say any word about their chipsets?
No i was talking about them trying to enter the dedicated GPu market and utterly failing at it.

Yes XGi is stil active. And their main markets are server chips and chips for embedded systems etc but are these the markets that they wanted to succeed in a few years ago? i tbh doubt it.

While the margins on server chipsets are higher then on desktop chipsets . Those server chipsets are also usualy sold in way lower quantities then the desktop chipsets.

Intel's too big to quickly drop out of an endeavor like this. As for actual brute-force production, they've definitely beat AMD/ATI and nVidia. Once they start with respectable graphics (probably use real-time ray-tracing as a primary method and then DirectX and OpenGL as emulation), they're likely unstopable. Looking at their profits since 4Q2006, they're definitely going to pour money into new processors and ground-breaking graphics.

Good! As long as it performs according to its price then there shouldn't be any problems.

Hmm, could this be another reason why nVidia has delayed the release of the G90 high end (the first reason being lack of a threat from AMD) or is the G100 to be out by then?

I agree that Intel is making enemies very fast with this move but i am sure that Intel has the money and the technology to compete with all three of AMD-ATI and NVIDIA.

I just want to see top of the line graphics with 250$ and two top of the line graphics cards together with an overclocked Q6600 using only my Enermax Noise Taker with 485 watts and not a PSU with 1000 watts. :)

But tbh i think intel could make it in the gpu market, theyve hired alot of employes from ati, nvidia and i think some 3dfx guys. So its really all about how they can use those to create good video card and i think they can do it.

Plus if you remember, nvidia are actually helping Intel in exchange for 1333 and further licenses etc.
