KFN32-D Dual Opteron 2220 Overclocking

hello

I'm using an Asus KFN32-D SLi board with 2 AMD Opteron 2220 SE, 4 gig of DDR2-677 reg ECC ramm nVidia Quadro FX 1400, 2x WD Raptor 74 GB @ nVidia MCP Raid0, 12x Samsung 500 GB @ 3Ware 9500S Raid5, all @ watercooling

The board BIOS gives some options for memory dividers, frequences and voltages, but reference frequency is limited to 210 MHz.
So I read about some guys using Clockgen and nTune to overclock this board, but both tools freeze the system. Cloockgen freezes windows at any changes of frequency, nTune at startup. BIOS is the newest, and the software versions too.

So does anybody knows what's wrong with my system?

talk about a PUMP's nightmare. 90 degree bends everywhere and 1 loop for the whole thing on little tubing? ACK.

Pretty ambitious project, but those 90 degree hard bends are each 4 times more restrictive than 45 degree softer bend, or even many more times restrictive than just straight tubing. I see something like this in the picture below and can't help but feel disappointed how much better your flow rate could be if you removed 70% of those bends.

But I see you have all low pressure drop Water Blocks, not very restrictive themselves but given the number you will need a powerful water pump.

Wow, that's a lot of system. The only other program I can think of trying is A64 info. I think there's a thread for it on this page. It'll probably crash as well. Probably an incompatablity with the chipset. The clockgen site does have support/feedback, you maybe able to tell them what you're running and get some help

I believe it might be his temps that are causing the shut-downs. A single loop with 3/8" tubing at a low flow rate (single 120.2 radiator) might not be able to adequately remove all of the heat, it's a possibility.

I'm sure his water setup needs some work, but the guy is asking why clockgen etc freezes when he tries to use it. This has nothing to do with his cooling, but more to do with chipset and incompatability with the programs he has tried

His system is overheating due to no water flow?

No, not at that little of overclock. He's only at 210 fsb. He could do that on stock air. His cooling will probably hurt him if he got up higher, but this is just program incompatability. Clockgen will just freeze on you if it doesn't support the mb. Actually, I think there was already a thread from someone trying to overclock a sever setup like this. Don't know if its the same mb, but he had the same problem. The only thing he ever got was for A64info to read his fsb, but he couldn't change it. Clockgen would do nothing for him. For his cooling, I agree and would probably just try to concentrate on the cpu cooling or use two water systems.

First of all, i would not rule out overheating so easily, even at default speeds, no oc what so ever, you have to look at 3 things, he has A) blocks on every single part you can possibly get your hands on B) 90 degree bends and every single turn C) a really small radiator for that many blocks

The CPUs are probably melting at stock... He should learn the basics of cooling and liquid flow before he undertakes overclocking.

Systool may be worth a try......google SYSTOOL mate and see if you get any joy with that.

Your watercooling setup is for sure a plumbers wet-dream.....what kind of pump are you using (going to use) to power it? I mean, what's the flowrate/head-height of the pump?

Ouch I just noticed the eheim on another look at your pics.....what kinda temps you gettin' whilst idle/loaded?

If you find your temps a little too high for comfort you could try using a pump with a little more.......grunt :)

Possible explanation:

When you change the clock frequency in the BIOS, many delicate memory delays are measured and calibrated during the next initialization / POSTing. Different clock speeds call for different delays (relative to the bit time), and these delays must even out unwanted skew caused by trace mismatches, voltage, clock frequency and temperature. The high datarates leave little room for error.

The problem with Windows tweakers is that they just set a different clock frequency without recalibrating the delicate DQS Byte Lane-delays that are shown here:

Eh...the only things you should be watercooling are the GPUs and CPUs.

Then just go out and buyer higher clocked GPUs.

One question, what operating system are you using?
If it is XP x64 and you got SP2+updates for it then clockgen and NV stuff is NO GO!
However it is working with SP1 :) (at least for me)

Hope it help clear thing up.

BTW have you done all those WC alone? Impressive! :up:

You need to select the correct PLL, make sure you are selecting either the correct PLL or one which is compatible.

Sometimes selecting the wrong one then attempting to adjust setting will cause a hardlock.
