680i chipsets is still awesome >> powering on the quad core era >> XFX 680i vs. Q6600

G'day fellas

nvidia sent over a new XFX 680i board with D00 revision chipset a few weeks ago. I've been pretty busy with so many different things and whatnot and had not time to stick it on the bench table to see what it's made of

since this board chipset revison was supposedly tweaked for quad cores i thought it would be fitting to test it with a newly acquired Q6600 Quad core G0 stepping :up:

i didn't know what to expect and certainly didn't have high hopes (best way to enter a bench session for surprise factor :D).....i had a quick test with the P5B DLX and P5KC boards with this CPU but both boards were FSB limited to around MAX 400.....P35 chipset was a little better so i didn't think i would be able to do much with nvidia chipset paricularly against P35 i thought.

BOY OF BOY was i wrong :D :shocked: :D

since i'm not a big 3D bencher (well nvidia graphics card people don't like me i guess :p: :rolleyes: :p: :D ) i tested wPrime which is a nifty little program that loads all cores to 100%.....pretty taxing under load if you've ever benched subzero in particular

So i came up with this :up:

4GHz 1024M wPrime
4.1GHz 32M wPrime

Q6600 L727Axxx

Thermaltake Big Typhoon

20.5-22.5 ambient

Motherboard > XFX 680i D00 revision :D :up: killer board

also on another note the power supply (Corsair HX620) did not move from 12.07v idle or load even at 4.1Ghz 1.64v going through a quad :shocked: . Now that's what i call a stable PSU :D >>> i've also benched high clocks under DICE with dual core and quads ....really like this PSU

this chip clocked higher on this board than any intel i tried it on so far

Nice work Dino, my Rev A1 EVGA 680i is chugging along beautifully with my 3.9ghz G0 Q6600, only needs 1.475v to be 3dm06 stable. Whats more the volt mod has worked like a charm :yepp: . To get 4.0ghz stable takes a big jump in volts to 1.57-1.59v, ah well, Im not complaining :D

you board's a bit of a squealer yeah have you tried to find out here whether you can do some mods to stop it from squeeling under load >>> my one is not making any noises at all.......but the LT version of XFX i tested earlier in the year did squeal....

Will do, gotta run some benchies this evening, looks like I will be trying WPrime for the first time.:D

Lots of good advice in here which you could share - not an EVGA you have got but all reference boards are the same.

i guess if i had any advice it would be not to overdo voltages.....give just enough :D

i'll share mine when i boot the machine on next bench session...atm some family priorities are more important :D

I see in the first picture you have couple of CPUs under the monitor and one of them is lapped. What are those ? Quads ?

How can i found out that my XFX 680i is DO, it is their version of EVGA's A+.

but i can tell you now that you have to me careful how you set volts to get sorts of results

i couldn't do much past 3.6/3.7 when i went all out initially ;)


also those CPUs you see are my monster E6700 which i will write about some more in a few days ;) and the other is Celeron460ES i haven't had time to test just yet :D

bah try running the board at those settings on WCG for 2 weeks straight.

The board will cook, and you'll run into problems. Im on my third 680i. I absolutely hate it compared to a P35 board.

Also another thing that bugs the crap out of me. Is the infamous C1 error, and the "--" poor ground error. Makes backplates a PITA to install because the -- error is usually related to a poor ground, or your backplate is touching something that it shouldnt.

Anyhow. Great to see your 680i is doing well. As for me, i wouldnt recomend it to anyone that needs a great stable platform.

I am running my Q6600 @ 3.51 rock solid on XFX 680i Sli Motherboard too. I love it, 680i sli motherboard has a lot of potential only problem is they never came up with good BIOS.

found this shot on the hard drive and thought it would be interesting to see load temps at 1.4v 3.6GHz quad loaded 1024M wPrime

RAM was happy priming past 620Mhz :D....we all know how weird these boards can be when it comes to RAM stability (this was not a long prime though heh)

Just got my L627A today, I work until monday, so will not have a chance to play until then. Will be going on a Striker Extreme, all I am looking for is stable 3.6 for WCG. Will let you all how it goes come monday.

i used auto voltages but FSB voltage was 1.4, mch 1.5 from what i remember

had some strange things going on with the system last night when i fired it up to get some screens off the drive

i didn't like me putting more than 1.53v on the CPU........i mean i still boot at 4GHz at say 1.57 but the gfx driver doesn't seem to load and it looks really funky the desktop LOL..it was unstable as well

anyways will do some more investigating when i get around to it >>> only thing i changed as far as i can remmeber is going from PCI gfx card to PCI express to test my 8800 which was sitting pretty in a box as i thought it was faulty but it turns out it decided working again ROFL

Well, I'm glad to see XFX gave a updated. ASUS didn't update the p5n32-E, so I opted for the EVGA 680i A1/T1, and IMHO, it's plenty good too (esp after the vdroop mod).

I'll admit ASUS produces some good boards, but it's hard to support ASUS after my experience with the P5N32-E... watching everyone getting an update, EVGA updating their customers for FREE, while ASUS did nothing... a cranky 1203 BIOS that went gold, then weeks later became beta, no solution in sight... for Quad Performance anyway. :thumbsdown:

i have a similar setup and can't get anything close to this. is there any way you can share some of your BIOS settings? or maybe point me to a guide for OC'ing this thing

i only get 16k 3d06 marks with SLI of same cards lol :(

what is the revision of your motherboard

could my RAM be holding it back? it's 8GB of OCZ sli edition stuff... it was cheap a couple weeks ago at frys, so i bought it. thought i might return it and try the gskill 2x2 kits instead

actually, i have some ddr2 800mhz ballistix i'll try. see if that changes anything. In the BIOS, i only disabled a couple things to allow changing the clocks, and then upped the ram volts, and changed CPU clocks. didn't change much. followed this guide:

After getting crap out a DFI P35 board I'm really liking this one, it's so much easier, only problem is the cooling solution, that one really sucks! But nice and easy to oc, and easier for me to RMA if it dies one day :p
