I remember seeing an article on LGA 775/C2D FSB comparison. I think it was 1066 vs 1333 if I remember correctly, and the conclusion was a 2-6% performance increase.
Does anyone know the general performance increase when comparing 1066mhz to 2000mhz FSB on C2D?? Or the original article that I saw??
I remember reading that article as well, although I can't remember where. I did a small comparison for various FSB values and concluded that for real-world applications, there wasn't a significant advantage to running the higher ones. I'm guess that for C2Q/C2D's, the FSB isn't the limiting factor. Read about it here.
BTW this is the computer I'm building for a friend. I was giving him some numbers on the advantages that he'd get over a Dell XPS system. Either way, it's $500 cheaper and you can overclock this system. Only $1k.

Unsure of the monitor..if anyone has any suggestions in the $250 range that would be great.

Anyone? Some sort of recommendation for 22" LCD, graphics card, hard drive, PSU, dvd burner, ram, mobo, cpu...? lol, just about everything?
7600gt only cost $75 and ram was $65.
I figure the PSU has enough juice. I wasn't sure if something beat out DS3, defiantly want to hit 2ghz on fsb and I'm quite sure the DS3 does that right? Any case suggestions would be great. I actually have a Centurion and really like it..if anyone knows another case of the class I'd love to take a look, thanks.

Your good to go I'd say. The board is a good choice because its solid, overclocks well and doesn't pack a bunch of useless features he'll never use. Plus there are tons of people that have them and lots of guides around in case he gets into some trouble and needs a quick fix.
I'd say look at a different processor though because those aren't hitting the best clocks especially considering the lower multiplier. I'd say look for a 4300, 6420 or a used 6600 for the higher multiplier which will allow you more overlocking flexibility.
If he's a serious gamer at all you'll definitely want to take a look at a beefier GPU if you can. If your trying to save then perhaps a used 7900GTX or x1900xt.
I'd say everything else is fine and the PSU will hold the system up even though its of a lesser known brand. Chances are it won't catch fire, lol.
I was under the impression that cooler master was a very reputable company. Feel free to suggest something.
Any reason for the 6420 over the 6320? I thought they clocked the same..not sure about the latest batches though.
Defiantly not a serious gamer..as a matter of fact I'm only going 7600gt as an option for a rainy day since it's $75, but if one of the nvidia 8 series plays better let me know..I am quite sure the 8500gt/8600gt are beat out by the 7600gt..and the 7600gt will run Vista fine when they go that route.
As a matter of fact..he/she multi tasks, uses adobe products, music, etc..doesn't need friggen excalibur...e6320 is very cheap.. mobo/heatsink are a little bit of a step up, but that is more of a long term thing. When you can increase your clock speed by 80-90%, the extra few bucks is a must. Same with the 7600GT.
And the barracuda..is the Seagate NL35 really quieter than the Seagate Barracuda ES? I thought the Barracuda was the quietest. Actually, I was really pandering between the Samsung Spinpoint T series and the Barracuda. Insight on the Samsung Spinpoint T series HD501LJ vs the Seagate Barracuda ES/7200.10 would be greattttttt!!! Being quiet is most important...reliability second, lol.
Also, any more 22" monitor suggestions? :-p

Sorry, what I should have said is less common than other brands. I would never have any problems putting that PSU in my system.
The 6420 just has the higher multiplier but you should get by with the 6320 just fine. You might also consider the 4300 but the 6*20 series does offer more cache which does come in handy in some cases. Then again if they aren't hardcore power users then why not just save all you can and get a 4300 then clock it up to a nice speed? Why not save on the cooler and get a Freezer 7 Pro? I am actually using it right now until I install my Thermalright and I am at 3.2GHZ, 1.45V and I never get any higher than 62 under load. I think it would be hard to justify the cost of the 120 Extreme for the type of user. Even considering the future, chips are moving down to the 45nm range and should only get cooler not hotter.
Keep the 7600GT if your looking for more performance over a 8500 or 8600 but if not for gaming then a 8500 or 8600 will give you more compatibility down the road so you may want to consider that. But then again ATM there would be no big difference and the 7600 would be fine and they could just pop a DX10 card in later if they truly needed one at some time.
With the hard drive just go for the most size for the dollar. Most hard drives are very quiet now so I wouldn't worry about it. I have 2 Barracudas and they are very silent BTW.
I think for the price that monitor is probably the best you'll find. I believe all 22" monitors are TN panels so they will differ very little from one to the next.
Ya, the Hard drive i posted is only $79.99, so i thought that would help keep cost down so you could maybe improve on other hardware. Its fast, i didnt have a problem with set-up, and it's quiet. But lets not forget CHEAP! :up:

The colder the CPU runs, the quieter the fan can be while running at 3.0ghz+. Silence is golden. Thanks for advice I've heard good stuff about the Samsung thanks. E4300 looks fantastic I think I'll work that in.
Is Microsoft honestly not going to allow people to use their G7 series with DX10 games? That is a joke if you have a 7950gx2.

I'd try hitting up a P-MVA panel for the overall best monitor. The Samsungs use the TN panel which is good for gaming but color and viewing angles are pretty bad. The P-MVA panels are still very good gaming monitors but have really good color reproduction, excellent image quality and better angles. I'd say go for a vx2025wm. These are probably the best 20" monitors around but unfortunately they don't make them anymore. Viewsonic chose to use the cheap TN panel in their new vx2035wm. Look on eBay and you can find the 2025 for under $300 including shipping.

Hrmm..22" is 22% larger than 20" in case anyone didn't know..also, can't be used or refurbished.

Ok. Total costs of $1065. Still have to buy the mouse and keyboard, and 3 120mm fans. Not sure on the fans, but was thinking either Silverstone or Scythe. Technically could shave off $35 on the heatsink and go GeminII, $100 on the monitor and go 204BW, $35 on the hard drive and go 400gb, and $65 on the ram with only 2gb, but I guess I'll have to wait and see of his opinion. True about the monitor but 1680X1050 looks tons better at 20" than 22". It will still look good at 22" though I guess.
Save some on the processor and go for the 4300. They will clock identically 90% of the time. I'd say get some Scythe S-FLEX fans and get the E version for good airflow and low sound ratio. I'd say keep the 120 over the Gemin. The 226BW can't be beat in the 22" monitor range and its tons better than the 204BW. I'd say save on the hard drive for sure. What are the chances he'll ever use 400GB? It'll take him at least a year or 2 to fill it, if he even does. At that time he could purchase a much larger drive for real cheap and swap all the data over. I'd say go for 2GB. Don't need more and don't want less.
Isn't the e4400 only $4 more for a higher multiplier? Wasn't sure about FSB walls on the e4400/e4300, but $4 isn't a bad play.

I gotcha I put down the wrong model number, I meant to say 206BW, but $250 shouldn't be a massive problem. You spend that much, they probably will just spend the extra $50.
Also, they do use alot of photoshop/photography/mp3s/video stuff, and she is going to be doing this stuff professionally. I doubt they'd want more than 500gb, but those files are huge they just might. 2GB seems like a lot, but with Vista you use 1GB alone, multitasking and what not, 4GB isn't a bad option especially for $65.

I always do love the fact that when you go to dell or gateway and build the exact same computer as your own except you can't overclock the mobo, cheap cases and cooling, stuck at your stock cpu speed, a crappy 22" monitor, cheaper quality ram and psu....it still costs over $1,600 + tax. :-p Although I noticed that blu-ray drives are becoming stock in higher class XPS models...that is awesome. <3 Blu-ray.
I have a e4400, it doesnt overclock as well as the e4300. People buy the 4400 because it has a high stock core speed. The 4300 is alot better to over clock, i wish i would have gotten it instead :mad:
My 2 cents, get a much better PSU..Like the foundation to a house, you want it good..;)

If you want visually simple, elegant AND has silent deadening qualities then look at the Antec Solo. The case is made with sound panels for reduced noise and has an excellent cable management system. I think the people you are buying for sound like they would like the small/medium footprint. It has plenty of room to work with though trust me. I have this case and I have tons of stuff in there but I can keep everything neat and tidy. It is also built very well and isn't made of a bunch of cheap plastic. The piano black glossy finish really looks nice as well and definitely fits the simple, professional profile your friends are looking for. With the style your friends are looking for and the sound deadening panels this case is an excellent choice. BTW it has great cooling as well. I think you would be fine with your PSU but the FSP would be a good choice as well. Can't really go wrong with either.

Well in theory yes because there is less room for the noise to travel and reflect. They both use the same three layer sound deadening panel technology. 400W is plenty for the system you are building for your friends.
